A Positivity Palete Cleanser

I am extremely pleased with everything Lumineth Realm Lords.  I liked the Vanari when I saw them as they are the core of how I like to build any pre-20th century type army with line infantry, cavalry and archers.  When I saw the Alarith, I knew this was the faction for me.  The Hurkan only further reinforce the idea I made the correct choice.  I think the Lumineth just might always produce models I adore, and will likely be my favorite faction Games Workshop has ever created.  That includes 40k in which I am far more interested in and involved.  It even goes as far as eclipsing hints of other factions both AoS and 40k.  Although, the very presence of the Lumineth does make me concerned how much I would like an Eldar Exodite faction should that ever materialize.

If someone was to tell me that not only would I be playing any kind of fantasy game four-five years ago I would have doubted them.  But if they were also to tell me that my favorite faction ever is a fantasy one, and based of elves as well, I would have thought them off their rocker.  But here I am, and I don't think GW or anybody could create a faction more inline with my preferences.

Yesterday, I had my first game in months (with the appropriate measures), OBR vs. Gloomspite on Focal Points, and it was really really fun. Also, it was a nice feeling to have a game with everything painted and I can't wait to get my Lumineths ready when the new units arrive.

Enlighten me, oh master! I do 1h a day most days but I am nowhere near that.

Lol, if you're referring to having a day off to hobby, I should probably clarify that I don't spend the whole day painting and building. It's just interspersed throughout the day, between other things.

If you're referring to 8 armies, that's just a tendency towards compulsive collecting. I like to have all of the things! If anything, this last year has actually helped me curb that tendency (necessity can be a marvelous motivator to change!)

If you meant successfully completing anything - be it painted or built - I favor "good enough" over quality work, which helps the process along nicely (contrast paints are a gift when it comes to rapid turnover.)

And you should! The models look very clean and vibrant, I am jelous.  I am currently at that stage in which picture them to be better than they finally turn out to be :P

Also, tips on how you handled that battle damaged shield?

Thanks for saying so. I remember when I finished painting my first models, I finally looked at them at table distance and they just looked muddy and dark. I have been consciously trying to paint brighter and higher contrast since then, so I'm happy that you noticed that in my painting.

For that shield, the sculpt is doing some of the work. All those scratches and tears are sculpted in. So I am mostly just trying to bring out the structure that's already there. My current thinking is that since shields are large and flat, it's OK to put a somewhat flat paint job on them. So I try to get a very even base coat to start and only do one step of drybrush-highlighting around the edges. No washes, since there are not enough recesses for them to do anything but make the shield look like someone spilled coffee on it. I spend most of my time on carefully black lining everything. Since the shadow areas are small, I keep them pretty dark, so that they are visible at a distance. In particular, I make sure to black line all the rivets, which otherwise get lost easily.

Well, where to begin?

I suppose one of the biggest positives with the hobby for me is that I only focus on the collecting aspect of the hobby, and due to my own borderline compulsion, aim to collect full Grand Battalions of the factions I collect. For example; I've got enough models to qualify for a minimum-sized Nighthaunt Procession, and I'm now working on maxing out each unit size. Yes, this may mean I'm staring down the barrel of another 80 Chainrasps, but I've slowly been collecting secondhand 'lots' of the buggers to salvage, clean and paint for a change of pace. Y'know, as opposed to clipping them off a sprue before painting...

I also have similar plans for a Sacrosanct Chamber (own most of the models for minimum-sized units), Daughters of Khaine Warcoven and also a scaled down Teclian Vanguard.

Shamefully, I may also have similar plans for Ossiarch Bonereapers and Flesheater Courts. I have an idea for a Red and Blue contrast between Order (red palette) and Death (blue palette).

Ok, it's ambitious and a lot to do all at once, but the variety of models and paint schemes prevents me from getting burned out, and aside from anime/manga and anime related fanfaction, I don't get much time to entertain anymore hobbies.

In addition to the model compulsion, the hobby gives me a chance to listen to music; which I'll admit has mainly been Girls Und Panzer playlists and soundtracks from the Final Fantasy games for the sake of nostalgia, and my own fanfiction to see if they make relative sense.

Speaking of which, another project I have started is to re-create the tanks/schools from Girls Und Panzer, which has fast become another unhealthy infatuation, using mainly Bolt Action 28mm scale tanks and specialised decals.

And now for the future: The new Lumineth release has jump-started my inspiration to finally put some paint on my Wardens, who along with the Daughters of Khaine, I have been putting off because they look fiddly. As much as I like the Tolkein/Celtic design of elves from the past, the new direction is putting me in mind of Shinto, which pairs nicely my interest in Anime and Manga.

And finally, if I ever find a lack of inspiration, I like looking through the Gallery, Topics and Collections of other members on this community to give me a little boost. Not sure how many pages back it is now, but I always find the 5000pts Owners Club topic uplifting, as well as the Monthly Painting Contract and Tale of X Gamers.

Great thread idea! Positivity in Warhammer for me is that@Beer & Pretzels Gamer set up a Zoom league for myself and some friends so I’ve actually been playing more than ever and finally getting a handle on the game from a rules and mechanics perspective.

I also am working on a dedicated hobby space that I hope to have set up in time to paint the 12x Vargheists I have coming.

Whether it’s painting, playing, list building, theory-crafting, reading reviews or Black Library, etc., Warhammer brings me hours of focused, hobbying joy.

I am so looking forward to seeing Cursed City! It looks incredible already. When my gaming group finished Silver Tower I started painting Shadows over Hammerhal but after getting the heroes and a few adversaries done I was starting to miss AoS. Last year I finished a Path to Glory Cities of Sigmar army and am now working on a Ogor Mawtribes Skirmish warband (See below for my first finished model).

After finishing this project I think I will switch to doing some additional heroes for use in Warhammer Quest. Who knows, I may be able to run them in Cursed City?

I am really loving painting at the moment, having a ball with it really. Hope my very sincere positiveness is a help @Kramer! :)

I really like that flesh colour. What is the combination?

I want to do a mawtribes as well but I have to get thru a slaves to Darkness army first

Basecoat Ionrach Skin, wash Drakenhof Nightshade with a touch of Lahmian Medium. For the final stages I mixed a bit of Lahmian Medium in to help the layers blend together. I used a layer of Deepkin Flesh on the raised areas followed by a layer of Pallid Wych Flesh  on the very highest areas. On the muscles I defined the top edges with fine lines of Pallid Which Flesh.

Thanks for the Zoom League shout out from @Televiper11 and thanks @Kramer for a positivity thread.  As I had put in a recent blog post I'd been  getting more and more "flustered" with a series of negative threads that had been up and running over last few weeks on this site but all I did was try and bring my thoughts together on the issues in that post.  Kudos to Kramer for taking it to the next level by trying to get some positive momentum going.

Zoom League has been a great outlet during the pandemic.  I've loved getting to try out new builds for old lists (FEC Grislegore), new tomes for old armies (Mawtribes), weird crazy stuff (can I piece together a SCE army out of the random rule of cool stuff my kids had bought?).  And now in my own weird attempt at turning a negative into a positive I am building and playing a Fyreslayers list (which seems to be a focal point for a whole lot of negativity) which has included unique paint schemes and writing short stories about the unique history of each unit and how they have come together in this strange Fyrd.

Most exciting for me is that I'm getting to do something that absent pandemic forcing us on to Zoom I might never have gotten to do.  In our latest tournament in Zoom League we each submitted a 2K list that in the first set of games will play round robin style against each of our opponent's lists.  After we've done that though we'll run back through the scenarios and matches but this time we'll swap lists.  I'm curious if anyone will manage what I consider "ultimate general bragging rights" - as in not only can I beat you with my "amazing" list but I can turn around and beat you with your own list against said "amazing" list.

If anybody is looking to make me even more positive and excited please make a pick in the poll for which list you think is going to win this tournament (link below).  Want to make me even more stoked?  Put your rational in the comments.

Can You Pick the Winner Just from the Lists - An AoS Experiment - Zoom League - Socially Distant Gaming - The Grand Alliance Community

Thanks again for this positive palette cleanser!  Back to painting up some terrain for a set up I'm excited to see on the table using a combination of stuff that has sat primed for too long and stuff that has sat on the painted shelf too long since it was last used.

I was able to buy a used  DoK army, and I got it on the table this weekend for the  first time. I was playing against Idoneth and it was a really fun game.  I was inspired to bring it out and play it when they announced the new battletome. It needs some repairs and some painting, and I was saving it as a project for another day but I wanted to play before the rules changed. I’m looking forward to the new battletome. I have a Shadow and Pain box and now I’m glad that I haven’t built anything out of that box because now I can wait to see what the new rules are. I enjoyed how the army played and rolling 80 dice for the witch aelves was fun, although I only got to do that once!

I just finished  painting a sons of behemat and now onto  another more theme and “fun” style army of pure Alarith temple. With the lockdown still going on here in Canada I’ve been more relaxed in my hobbying and just working on models and lists I like rather than worrying about how competitive.

I got over 120 minis painted last month after really struggling for hobby momentum through 2020. It's the first time an army project of mine has been fully painted in about two decades. I really rediscovered my love for this hobby in the last few weeks and a large part of that is reconnecting with some old friends on Zoom for hang out and paint sessions. I'd been living abroad for three years and moved back to the UK in March 2020 really pumped to see family and friends. We had a long weekend reunion of gaming planned that ultimately got called off, and id really been missing them, but they've been absolute rocks through the pandemic and that first game we play will be all the sweeter.

A great Thread! Even if I am not that vocal in commenting, know that it is so heartwearming to read the responses. :)
The Hobby has always stayed with me and I visit this Community several times a day to just read about painting progress on some project or about the newest speculations. As an Art-History Student I enjoy watching colour-theory videos or just to collect images of painted miniatures for inspiration and so on. :)

I don't put a burden on myself to paint my miniatures and I only try to paint when I am really in the mood.  So, not having painted anything since October 2020 didn't really bother me. Alas I arrived at a dead end with my former paint scheme and didn't want to continue it. However with the new Lumineth announced I am so ready to jump back in! This new release contains everything I ever wanted (Ballistae, foot Heroes, a Banner-Bearer Hero, Swordmasters.)

Please don't look closely (the yellow ones are only test models as I am lacking certain paints at the moment) but these yellow Lumineth are the start of an overhaul for my small army. Can't wait to see my Lumineth arrayed in shinning yellow and bringing the light!

I’ve been finding it really hard to focus on working on my AoS armies. This has got to the point where I have painted 1 unit in the last 6 months for my Khorne army. However I have massively  enjoyed  taking on mini projects, usually around a board game. There are so many fantastic ones out there.

I have recently been playing Nemesis, a semi co op alien style sci ri horror game with my son and autistic nephew, both 12. They have absolutely loved it, my nephew was leaping around the kitchen in excitement. When my nephew is round for games day, they spend the day playing computer games and planning their nemesis strategy.

I am looking forward to new warhammer quest and I expect it will be in my collection. I do really like  seeing the cool models for all the ranges come out. I know I won’t get to paint or use most of the releases, but I love seeing what GW come up with. The underworlds warbands look like a good way to work on some cool stuff with out getting sucked into another 2k army I can’t use.

And, hey it’s getting lighter. The northern hemisphere is on thdownwave of seasonal viral infections, vaccines are being rolled out, new medicines are being developed. We have got over every pandemic before. That Khorne army may just get to reap some more skills yet

I’ve noticed the same thing, @Kramer. What a great idea for a thread.

This hobby has been a real lifeline over the last year. I’m someone who needs to be working on a project to keep themselves occupied and feel like they’ve ‘achieved’ something each day, however small. I’ve used all the newfound time at home to finally work on my Lovecraftian-inspired Idoneth project.

(@welcome_to_innswich on Insta, if you’d like to check it out so far! 📸)

This project is very special for me. It brings together some of the things I love most — Warhammer, cosmic horror, the sea, storytelling — under one umbrella. I’ve been writing as well as modelling and painting to keep things fresh,  coming up with stories and characters to bring the town of Innswich to life, and I don’t know how I’d have coped without all of this. You know that feeling, when you wake up and you’re just buzzing to work on something?!

This time last year, I never thought I’d be able to create a diorama like that, and I’m now almost 90,000 words into a Warhammer horror story, which I’m really proud of.

It also has to be said, I am so, so happy with how hard GW has been working to keep things moving as best it can and keep releases coming. I was so excited by BR: Morathi and I can’t wait to get my hands on Teclis! (so to speak...)

It’s been great reading through all these posts just now. Thanks again, Kramer! 🙌🏻

Great Thread!

Personally I am really looking forward to this little guy to arrive.  It`ll bring my Blades of Khorne to about 10k points and will kind of "finish" my first AoS army.  It will be great to be "done" with this big project but it will also be great to find a new army after that.

Played my first game in months since moving back to my home state. I love this game, my faction, the models and the people I play with. I used to chase the meta in Warmachine, spending hours pouring over unit cards looking for hidden synergies and ways to dark horse the meta lists. Not anymore, and Age of Sigmar is, in my mind, the Age of Fun.

This may not be exactly on point for the thread, but when I get pessimistic about Age of Sigmar or the AoS community I tend to look towards 40k. It very quickly makes me feel that even at their worst things in AoS are reasonably manageable and not that bad 😅

As someone re-entering the hobby after a long absence (I last played when the Realmwar books where being released) I'm in the fourtunate position of everything is shiny and new to me again and the game has moved so far forward from what I remember. Not quite the awe and wonder of the first time you walk into a store and see the display armies, but getting there. I'm genuinely feeling spoilt for choice in regards to where to start with what to collect, and what to read to catch up with the background.

All in all I'm not jaded, have no expectations and everything is happy and positive. Also as strange as it may seem given the current climate I'm also really looking forward to getting into the community.

...Oh and Cursed City. It looks like it's going to be glorious. I randomly saw the two model preview, I have no idea why I even saw them now, but imidiately decided to jump headfirst back into the hobby.

So, so true. The Oldhammer community too has it's fair share of edition wars, disputes over what is/isn't Warhammer and of course the continued bitterness towards AOS. Meanwhile the mainstream of the hobby with AOS is becoming more and more welcoming and open to all approaches to gaming than WFB ever was.

Supremely Jealous. Congrats! I love big detailed centrepiece minis and this guy is on my bucket list after the megas are done. One day. One day....
