Warhammer - The Old World

Recommended Posts

@RuneBrush true, but some armies were easier than others. Eg making a superpowered zoanthrope for tyranids wasn't too hard, but some others were tricky. Or required getting hold of lots of various parts which could be daunting to a newer person who might just want to field a certain kind of army themed around a really cool unit they read in the book. Sometimes a lot of the fancy conversions we see are just unaffordable to many who aren't deeply hooked or around at the right time. Eg right now there are a lot of conversions with Necron Reanimators because of Indomitus and the rules for the model they are selling really cheaply. So its a more affordable model to convert with - fastforward a few years and a new edition of the rules and I could see that reverse - suddenly some cool conversions that might be only a few £s to get the parts for now could be £30 just to get the few reanimator parts you'd need.

Really interested in this release, but my commitment to it will depend entirely on the models. Hoping any new empire kits, and there will need to be if there is a change setting with all the "Karl Franz" iconography,  will be the Mike Anderson style, rather than forge world style. I used to love forge world's more realistic tone to miniatures but they just can't keep up with the modern Warhammer aesthetic imo. If we get stuff resembling a more gritty style (Like the Blood Bowl) my wallet will stay closed.

More deeply random and obsessive Bret thoughts -

Louen Orc Slayer is of the House of Bastonne, descended from Gilles le Breton and his son Louis the Rash, first crowned king of Bretonnia (Altho some newer stuff may make Gilles king too, I forget) and ancestor of Duke Bohemond Beastslayer of Bastonne in End Times setting we all know.

Note the names. Louis the Rash - Louen Orc Slayer - Louen Leoncoeur. I currently infer from this that Bretonnia actually only had two strictly hereditary royal dynasties, the Bastonnes and the Couronnes, and that the latter inherited through the female line (hence recurrence of family forename Louen). This further contextualises and explains at least three attempts at usurpation by the proud, bitter rulers of Mousillon (Merovech, Maldred, Mallobaude).

Also, Jules the Just hasn’t done his honourable jousting reforms yet so Bret nobles are all psychos who duel and kill each other for fun. The Border Princes have been colonised by Bret crusaders and there are loads of bloodthirsty land hungry knights errant spoiling for trouble.

Addendum - I have remembered a king of a third dynasty, Aquitaine, another Lou, Louis the Righteous, the Red Duke’s brother (not sure if older or younger)

on the whole it seems likely that the Bretonnian Crown, like the Imperial one, passes around the leading noble families. But I still like to think this is through a distinctive Bretonnian line of hereditary descent (including the female line, so more English than French)...

Artwork for Total War: Warhammer 3 that's doing the rounds which nobody can seem to find an original source to, suggesting it's a leak. I know the mods are touchy about those but I don't know if that extends to video games. We're also due for an announcement tomorrow on it. Whilst it's more than likely for the video game, you can see the Ice Guard and Bear-Hussars featured as well as presumably Katarin.

One of the winged lancers is riding a horse, to be fair.

It does look like GW style artwork. But such can be faked, obv. Kislev is obviously going to be in the third Total Warhammer though, both based on common sense and the teaser they released today, and I can imagine they might include some of the stuff from the upcoming Old World in it. Be a way to get people hyped for models years in advance, if nothing else.

Far beyond the world and its petty wars there exists a dimension of pure, malevolent magic: The Realm of Chaos. It is a terrible place, incomprehensible to the mortal mind. It whispers promises of power, but to behold it is to be seduced by it. To relinquish your soul to it. To become it.

The four Ruinous Powers rule over this place, ever seeking to slip their bonds and engulf the world in a tide of daemonic corruption. Nurgle, the plague god; Slaanesh, the lord of excess; Tzeentch, the changer of ways; and Khorne, the god of blood and slaughter.

On the border between the worlds, two mighty kingdoms stand sentinel: the stern warriors of Kislev and the vast empire of Grand Cathay. But each is beset by its own trials, and now both have cause to cross the threshold and send their armies into the Realm of Chaos.

The world stands on a precipice. A single push will plunge it into cataclysm.

And there is one who schemes to achieve just that, an ancient figure who desires nothing less than to wield supreme power. But to succeed, he will need a champion…

The coming conflict will engulf all. Will you conquer your daemons? Or command them?

I'm just still shocked by Cathay. What an absolute surprise!

Saw the end already shaking from seeing Kislev in glorious CGI.

Caught the little jade like dragon statue, thought huh? That's kinda like Cathay.

Heart racing, ah no see there's a red thing for Khorne it's probably for Nurgle or something.

Hang on, that is a dragon. Map reads Grand Cathay.....

Im literally sat here in work buzzing, feel like I could take off haha, so so happy, what a nice surprise through this year.

So...Cathay, Demons and Kislev...what will be the last base faction .. Chaos dwarf or Ogres ?

My bet on Ogre kingdom as the last one. Chaos dwarf as a DLC.

In case anyone was in any doubt, this is absolutely a specialist games project. Andy Hoare is the head of that team and also the lead on the old world project. We can probably expect a release schedule similar the Horus heresy game.

They also announced a new Pre-order faction reward. Which could be Chaos dwarves or Ogres.

I think Chaos dwarves are most likely because they have a smaller pool of interesting characters compared to ogre kingdoms.

They said 9 LL at launch, so it's probably just Kislev/Cathy/Daemons.

2 for Kislev, 2 for Cathy, 5 for Daemons (1 for each God + Bel'akor)

The pre-order race might be for 2, so presumably Dogs of War in the same way Norsca was the pre-order bonus for 2 despite being an Old World race.

Yes, like the many job offers proved many times already.

They use the "Warhammer Studio" name as a generic term opposed to the CA studio.

But I am still very interested to see Cathay on The Old World tabletops. With Dragons leading humans, apparently.... ;)

Current Mawtribes line consists of 100% Ogre Kingdoms units. No need to reinvent the wheel.

I would not be surpised now if the launch box set for Old World is Plastic Kislev vs Chaos Daemons to tie into Total War Warhammer 3, since Daemons are an easy carry over to Old World and having the core roster of Kislev be in plastic would match how the other more recent specialist game have been (Blood Bowl, Necromunda, Titanicus).

Love the trailer and everything in it, even if my heart wanted Chorfs.
I'm really curious about The Old World too, I can't wait to see more!!!

that could also be 2 Kislev, 2 Cathay, 4 Daemons(I didn't see no undivided) and one chaos dwarf.

There are hints that the 9th might be Be'lakor.

Does anyone else suspect The Old World might turn out to be small scale models (like warmaster) or something?

Now they are talking about Kislev and Cathay, which is presumably in addition to the core old factions like Empire, Brets, High elves etc.

We'd be talking about a game as big as WH40k and AoS. Presumably needing at least two factions to come out at once to get it started.

I can't see how the specialist games team can run that or GW have the production capacity. Also arent they worried about splitting their playerbase?

I'm starting to feel like the old world is going to be something quite different and there could be some real rage when that difference comes to light.

If it was 15mm they'd probably not have that amount of detail on their concept art. Plus they'd likely just release it as Warmaster since, well, they already had a 15mm Old World game under the Specialist synonym.

Production wise there probably isn't 'that' much difference when you consider Smaller Models = More Of Them. I get as many sprues in my box of of five 15mm Cromwells for Flames of War as I do a single 28mm Leman Russ for 40k.

The vast majority of people are expecting a 28/32mm rank-and-file game, people aren't quiet about that and I don't think GW would be dumb enough to not be upfront about it being anything but that considering the blowback they'd receive at a 'surprise' reveal of it being something else.

You know they have just been expanding their factories ?

And regarding the split of playerbase it seems to not be a problem for 30k and 40k.

While I'm honestly not sure I can afford specialist game prices for a whole army, cough Forge World cough, I might grab some models for "Counts As" for Cities of Sigmar lists.
