  1. An article showing the map of Bretonnia has been published on Warhammer community website: https://www.warhammer-community.com/2020/12/28/the-old-world-your-first-look-at-the-map-of-bretonnia/ Personally, I like this and I am more and more interested in how is "WH: The Old World" going to look like.
  2. This year was pretty bad when it comes to painting (and some other things I believe) - I have managed to paint only Archaon and 2 (out of 6) Varanguard knights. Generally, I dedicated much less of my time to painting. For the new year, I will finish the rest of the Varanguard (obviously) and try to paint some more Sylvaneth (I am expanding my army with some models in a different colour scheme). Everything beyond that would be a great bonus.
  3. If things stay as they are (points and warscrolls), I would like only a couple of changes - to allow Sylvaneth Wyldwoods to not block LOS for friendly Sylvaneth models and make them deal mortal wounds more often. I personally do not feel that forests are dangerous enough - the enemies should really be at disadvantage when it comes to fighting near Wyldwoods. I also think this change would be very thematic as well. Now, this is really far-fetched, but it would be cool if Branchwych could collect soulpod/lamentiri for Treelords (if she is nearby when they die), so she can try to plant it near the Wyldwood and โ€œsummonโ€ the Treelord again (not to mention it would be in line with fluff). There may be a limit on how many times you can do this, or there may be a chance of failure (you can grow a new treelord on 4+, for example).
  4. Personally, I doubt it. There's a few more Broken Realms books to go, a lot of Warhammer 40K stuff (since we are going to get a lot of codexes now that the new edition is out) and not to even mention other games. If they need to delay some releases a bit, I would probably bet on finishing Broken Realms event in 2021, and then announcing AoS 3 either in late 2021 or some time in 2022. Oh, and there's "WH: the Old World" as well...
  5. I did not manage to paint that much this year. Besides Archaon, the only model I have painted recently was the leader of my first Varanguard unit. Lockdown, working from home, job change and general lack of spare time (I became a dad last year) required prioritizing some other things in my spare time. However, recently I managed to find a bit of time for painting, so here's this bad boy:
  6. I played only a handful of games of AoS this year (due to lockdown, job change and many other things), but here's a short battle report for the game I played with my firend. Both armies went just a bit over 1000 points and we decided to use one of the Meeting Engagement scenarios and ME rules for deployment and terrain/objective placement, since we played on a smaller board (but in all other aspects, it was a standard game). I was playing Gnarlroot list. My main plan was to try to use support spells (like Regrowth and Verdurous Harmony) to keep my main hitting units (Kurnoth Hunters) or my Treelord Acient alive and win by attrition. Here are the lists: SYLVANETH - Gnarlroot glade Branchwych (Deepwod lore: Regrowth) Branchwraith - general (Deepwood lore: Verdurous Harmony) Treelord Ancient (Deepwood lore: Regrowth) 2 x Tree-Revenants Kurnoth Hunters (bows) Kurnoth Hunters (scythes) Gladewyrm Spiteswarm Hive CITIES OF SIGMAR - HALLOWHEART Battlemage x 3 (Whitefire Retinue battalion) Freeguild General on Griffon Demigryph knights Freeguild guard Freeguild Handgunners I deployed Hunters with bows and Branchwych on the left flank, one unit of Tree-Revenants on the right flank and everything else in the middle. Hallowheart army goes first: wizards put up some defensive spells on General and then both he and Demigryph knights run forward, while the rest of the army cautiously advances. I use Treelord Ancient to place another Wyldwood on the table and then summon 10 Dryads and Spiteswarm hive. My army moves forward just a bit, trying to stay mostly outside of enemy charge ranges. Kurnoth Hunters with bows shoot at the General and put 6 wounds on him. Hallowheart wins the priority for the second turn. General is healed for 3hp, then Wizards place spell that gives enemy units -1 to attack rolls against that unit (Pha's protection). Demigryph knights fail their charge on Dryads, but the General rolls 12 for charge distance and after charging and piling in, he is able to engage my Branchwraith (ouch!). However, this also brings him in combat with my Kurnoth Hunters with scythes and one unit of Tree-Revenants. General on Griffon divides his attacks between the Branchwraith and Kurnoth Hunters: he kills the Branchwraith, but scores only a single wound on Hunters. In return, Kurnoth hunters and Tree-Revenants manage to put just enough wounds on General to kill him, despite having -1 to hit. In my turn, I heal Kurnoth Hunters and fail to summon Gladewyrm. Treelord Ancient shoots at the Demygryph Knights, but fails to wound. Hunters with bows also shoot at Demigryph knights and score just a single wound. Dryds run forward and Hunters with scythes charge at the Demigryph Knights (with a huge boost from the Hive). I roll poorly and manage to kill only a single knight and put two wounds on another. However, I start leading in victory points. Hallowheart wins the priority for the third time. Wizards fumble some spells, but they heal the Demigryph Knights and take out one of the Hunters with scythes. Handgunners shoot at Dryads and manage to kill two. Knights attack, kill the second Hunter and leave the last one with only one wound left. In return, that Hunter kills one of the Knights. In my turn, I shoot with Treelord Ancient at the Demigryph knights and kill the last remaining model, and Hunters with bows start thinning out ranks of Handgunners. I win the priority roll for the last turn (yay, double turn!). Gladewyrm is finally summoned and it heals the last surviving Hunter with scythe. Hunters with bows kill some more Handgunners. Both units of Tree-Revenants "jump" on the other side of the board, but despite their ability to reroll dice, I fail all their charges. Dryads charge Handgunners and wipe them out, while the Hunter with scythe charges one of the Battlemages and kills him. I control my opponent's objective as well at this point. During his turn, my opponent does not manage to clear the Dryads with his Battlemages and Freeguild guard manages to score a single wound on a lonely Hunter with scythe. In return, the Hunter wipes out half of the unit. Some observations from this game: Branchwraith as Gnarlroot general looks like a good combination. Nurtured by Magic ability works great with Regrowth spell and Chalice of Nectar artifact will help you greatly with summoning Dryads and casting Verdurous Harmony. However, my Branchwraith was the first casualty of the game, so I was not able to test this theory Kurnoth Hunters with scythes were probably my best unit. They had a key role in taking out General on a Griffon, they killed two of the Demigyph Knights, one Battlemage and half unit of Freeguild guard. Regrowth or any healing ability helps a lot, because it keeps them on the table much longer. Hunters with bows were also very good - they were basically artillery, always dealing some damage from far away. Hallowheart can be very powerful, especially if they have access to lots of Endless spells. However, my opponent could do some things very differently and he made several bad choices during the game. For example, he could put much more defensive spells or buffs on his General, making him very hard to deal with. Battalions should be used carefully in 1000 point games or smaller - they eat a huge chunk of available points and may not be worth the price.
  7. Since a lot of people already commented in a thread regarding the "pile of shame", I was wontering do you guys have have some way of organizing your unpainted/unassembled models and tracking the progress? Since I play several armies for both Wh40K and Age of Sigmar, I usually organize my "work items" by army. For tracking the actual items, I am using Asana (but there are many similar services) and the work items are mostly "Build X" or "Paint Y". Seeing everything on the board helps me a lot and motivates me to keep working. I also sometimes assign deadlines for specific items. Here's how one of my boards look at the moment: I created this board when my Sylvaneth collectinon was nearly finished, so there's only a handful of tasks. However, my other projects look different So, what do you use to track your progress (if you use any such tool)?
  8. Knights of the Empty Throne (from the Wrath of the Everchosen book) may be what you are looking for. I am building a list with Varanguard, Marauder Horsemen and Chaos Knights.
  9. If you are referring to the Sylvaneth bark, for all models I've used the same combination: Vallejo Khaki as base and then Vallejo Brown Ink over it. You may add a few highlights (with khaki again) and that's it.
  10. I have finally managed to finish my Archaon! Now I can start painting Varaguard (I have 3 at the moment and 3 more will arrive in a few weeks when this whole Covid-19 thing hopefully calms down). The biggest challenge was actually connecting the model to the base - I had one part of the Azyrite Ruins set lying around and then pinned the model to it in order to make it stand.
  11. This year I decided to start a new army - Slaves to Darkness. Or, more precisely, Host of the Everchosen. I want 1500 army, containing Archaon, two units of Varanguard and probably one unit of Marauder Horsemen. Since I've become a dad recently, I am not able to paint as much as before, so Archaon took some time, but now it is finished!
  12. Background: I will comment mostly the on armies that are used in my gaming group. I have 4 armies: Sylvaneth, Khorne, Beasts of Chaos and Slaves to Darkness. Sylvaneth and Khorne are the ones I ply the most, while BoC and StD are more like cool hobby projects (BoC army has a lot of converted models, while my StD is just Host of the Everchosen ). I play AoS with my 3 friends, who collect Stormcast, Cities of Sigmar, Ossiarch Bonereapers, Slaanesh and Flesh-Eater Courts. I read a few other battletomes as well, so I'm (somewhat) familiar with some other armies as well. We play mostly friendly matched play and narrative games, but we are aware of the meta. I will be mostly ranking battletomes based on number of options and playstyles thy offer and how interesting to play the army seems overall. The best: Cities of Sigmar Beasts of Chaos These battletomes offer multiple playstyles, cool rules that perfectly reflect the story behnd the faction, many different artifacts/CMD abilities, large number of miniatures to choose from (especially CoS) and insane potential for conversions. Very good: Sylvaneth Khorne Idoneth Deepkin Good: Ossiarch Bonereapers Stormcast Eternals Flesh-Eater Courts Slaves to Darkness Fyreslayers Bad: Slaanesh (I'm perfectly aware how powerful Slaanesh is in tournament scene, but I find this battletome completely boring and miniatures are ugly as hell)
  13. Since our first child arrived six months ago and my job became much more demanding, I will have a lot less hobby time this year. Because of that, I decided to have a very focused list of resolutions for this year: play more; I would like to use most of the available hobby time to play more games with my friends finish painting my small Everchosen army (basically, Archaon, two units of Varanguard and some Marauder Horsemen). I am already halfway done painting Archaon, so I'm off to a good start My Beasts of Chaos army will be painted by a friend of mine, who is great painter and does miniature painting commisions. My Sylvaneth are already completely painted, so if everything goes as planned, once the Everchosen are finished I can start working on the unpainted half of my Blades of Khorne army. Each Khorne mini I paint this year will be a nice bonus
  14. We use the following house rules: Monster bases block line of sight to the smaller ones. You can't shoot between the Treelord's legs in order to hit a Branchwitch, for example. No shooting through multiple buildings, or multiple windows/doors. A lot of people that I play with also play Warmachine and Infintiy (myself included), so LOS rules in those games were direct inspiration for house rules listed above. We are perfectly aware that there are no such restrictions in regular rules. Generally, in 95% of the games we played, we never had situations where these house rules would apply - they were regular AoS games with regular rules. However, I have to say that if I could change any rule in the game, it would be the LOS rules. I think the game could benefit a lot from terrain pieces that affect LOS in some way (maybe giving negative modifiers to attack rolls against models within that terrain feature) and from things like larger bases obscuring smaller ones.
  15. This is a great set, but man, that new Tzeentch Magister model is probably the ugliest model I've seen in a while. If I get the Tzeentch half of the set, I would probably remove his head and put a different one.
  16. I have finished painting Sylvaneth Endless spells. Here's some pics:
  17. I think this is a completely wrong approach - actually, I have seen this approach driving people away from the game. Someone enters the store, wants to buy some models, and usually does that based on the look of the models and some backstory (if he read some fluff). Then, some guy shows up and tells him that his choices are not good, they are not optimal, and that there are better choices or - in some cases - even better armies. The poor new player is now confused, his first experience is automatically ruined - he leaves store either confused, or with models he is not so happy about any more. In most cases, he drops the game completely and does not show up again. I have seen this happening in our Warmachine/Hordes scene. I've also seen players making fun of other players who play "casual" lists. Now, I've been competitive WM player for a long time and I've won both big and small events, so I know that what you say is true - if you don't play certain combinations of models, you will lose; some things are simply better than the other. However, I believe that people should come to that conclusion on their own - without anyone telling them that they are not "playing the game properly". Many people buy their first model because they like the look of it, or because they want to tell a specific story - I really doubt that many players consider high-end play when they are making their first purchases. I think that more competitive/more experienced players should handicap themselves when they are playing less experienced people. Don't play your strongest list - make some changes, so your opponent stands a chance. My best friend plays Free Peoples and has very limited amount of models - he simply does not want to buy multiples of any unit, because he sees his army in a specific way (and he invested a lot of time in painting). He is also not very experienced player and does not read blogs, forums or articles describing tactics. If I play my strongest Khorne/Sylvaneth lists against him, he would loose almost every single game we play - which is something I would like to avoid. So, I play different combination of units every time - I take some strong choices, but not everything I could use. This gives him a chance and the games are much closer. I truly believe that this is the way to go - less experienced players should be mentored, not crushed and ridiculed because they are playing sub-optimal army list.
  18. My Ylthari's Guardians - I have painted them few months ago. However, they are mostly part f my Sylvaneth army and I use them in Skirmish games.
  19. I would like to see the LOS system similar to the one Warmachine/Hordes has: larger bases block everything behind them and not being able to shoot at the unit because you see a tip of someone's sword peeking behind the house. I would also like to see negative to hit modifiers when it comes to cover. Generally, I really enjoy AoS, but these two things were something that bothered me a bit since I first started playing (actualy, being a Warmachine player for years, there was a lot of things that bothered me at the beginning, but now I'm used to most of them and I accepted them as part of the game ). I simply would not mind seeing some extra complexity when it comes to LOS/cover/targeting rules.
  20. @Duck1986, @Isotop Actually, guys - please take a look at the full wording for "Steady aim": You can add 1 to the hit rolls for a Freeguild Handgunner in your shooting phase so long as its unit did not move in the preceding movement phase and there are no enemy models within 3" of its unit. Bonus from "Steady Aim" applies only in your shooting phase, if you did not move in the preceding movement phase (the one that goes immediately before the shooting phase, during your turn). This does not apply in your opponent's turn (if you are using support ability, or the Piper's ability). However, you can apply bonus from "Handgun Volley" ability, because it does not specify the phase.
  21. Sylvaneth: - Allarielle, the Everqueen - Spirit of Durthu - Treelord Ancient - Drycha Hamadreth - Treelord - Branchwych x 2 - Branchwraith - Arch-Revenant - Ylthari's Guardians - 30 Dryads - 10 Tree-Revenants - 10 Spite-Revenants - 3 Kurnoth Hunters with bows - 3 Kurnoth Hunters with swords - 3 Kurnoth Hunters with scythes - Sylvaneth Endless spells - Awakened Wyldwood x 2 Blades of Khorne: - Skarbrand - Slaughterpriest x 3 - Khorgos Khul - Bloodstoker - Bloodsecrator - Aspiring Deathbringer (shield and axe) - Lord of Khorne on Juggernaut - Herald of Khorne - Skulltaker - 30 Bloodletters - 20 Bloodreavers - 10 Blood Warriors - 3 Mighty Skullcrushers - 3 Bloodcrushers - Korgorath - Khorne Juedgements Stormcast Eternals: - Lord-Celestant - Lord-Castellant - Lord-Exorcist - Farstriders - 10 Liberators - 10 Judicators - 5 Retributors - 5 Gryph-Hounds Wanderers: - Nomad Prince - 20 Glade Guard - 10 Daughters of the Thorn - 10 Eternal Guard - 10 Wyldwood Rangers Besides this, I have several armies for other miniature games as well: - Adeptus Custodes for 40K - Necrons for 40K - Trollbloods for Hordes/Warmachine - Circle Orboros for Hordes/Warmachine - Small Combined Army force for Infinity
  22. Pretty sure that all damage from the Celestial Lightning Arc will be reduced to 1. It's an ability that triggers once at a specifed time and deals variable amount of damage (depending on the number Evocators and successsfull rolls).
  23. Recently, my gaming group decided to try to create AoS adaptation of the Warbands rules that were used in some of the previous editions of Warhammer Fantasy Battle. All of us have decent collections and multiple armies, but we also love playing Skirmish and smaller matched play games, where we can focus on a hero and just a few units. Also, we enjoyed playing Warbands and Regiments of Renown in previous editions of WHFB. After a few test games, we created a simple ruleset and we would like to share it here as well. The rules focus playing 500 point games using some restrictions and limitations. Maybe some of you will find this useful - and if you like these rules, feel free to post your suggestions on how to improve them. warbands_aos_v1.pdf
  24. I agree with the @Warfiend I think it is important to make a distinction between a modifier to the roll and modifier to the stat itself. Unbridled Malice speifies that the Bravery of enemy units is lowered by one while they are within 3" of the Spite-Revenants. This is a static effect, an aura - that is active during the whole turn. This does not affect the roll in any way - however, the roll is made using the already modified Bravery characteristic.
  25. No problem! The process is actually very simple: the miniature is primed in white (vibrant colours, like orange, are much easier to do when you are using white primer) the weapon is painted with Orange Fire (Vallejo Game Color range). Usually, one coat is enough the weapon is then washed with GW Cassandora Yellow after the wash is dry, I applied edge highlights with Sun Yellow (Vallejo Game Color range)
