New white dwarf

I'm not sure if it's true or not, but my understanding is that the first 4 White Dwarf's will have a free model in them.  My hope would be that this will mean each GA will have one hero or another as a freebie.  That would be freaking awesome.

Of course, that would mean no 40k freebies, so pretty unlikely.

Issue two has a free 40k comic. There are apparently free gifts with issue 3 and 4 but no confirmation of what they are yet.

Still not finished reading mine :)  I play/collect for all of the main game systems now and found the new format to be crammed full of content - lots to read!

Only two gripes would be that Blanchistu still doesn't have a focus and seems simply to be a way of showing off miniatures in John's unique style.  A bit sad really, the original ones were really interesting and explained various artists who's style he had incorporated etc.  The other bit is I think the quality of paint splatter continues to drop with frequent missed out steps etc.

Haha I'm having the same problem! I've so many Khorne Bloodbound character models...I mean I could start an army...and fully converted Bonesplitterz...and Moonclan...and fully converted Skaven Sky Pirates...and Jump Pack Dwarfs...and the 2 Stormcast starter sets I have...and finish Ironjawz...and Tzeentch...

I think I have a problem.

@Chris Tomlin I'm going to end up picking up the US Starter at some point too. I love Bolt Action, and adding the Weird is even better!

Is it better so far than weekly white dwarf? Yes, yes it is. Is it better than the "fat" dwarf of yore (they even call back to it in the issue)? Jury is still out, however......words.....so many words..... I don't recall a white dwarf with that text density.  Overall I got a positive vibe from the issue despite the subscriber debacle in the US. The free mini certainty didn't hurt.

As for cons.....quite a bit of rehashed, recycled content. But I get that not every reader has seen all of it and at the end of the day the mag is supposed to help cross promote. Also some of the text was small which for any of the 4/c knockout text, it could look blurry if like in my issue the printing plates didn't line up exactly.

Again, good start. Either way I am committed for twelve  more issues (with my complimentary issue due to the subscriber delay, again good on GW), so in it for the long hall.

As far as usefulness goes, mileage will vary.  I play exactly one game - AoS.  I flipped through this WD in about 15 minutes, a bit less time than I'd have spent on one of the weekly WDs if it was an AoS one.  Basically a batrep and one warscroll.

Not that this is a problem.  If I played even one of the specialist games, it probably would have doubled my enjoyment of the magazine.  Let alone if I played 2 or 3 of them, or more.

I still have not received mine I'm on the west coast of the US and am a subscriber.  Anyone else still waiting?

Should I ask where it is again?

I wrote support and below is what they sent on 9/8;

Thank you for writing into us. On Friday of last week we received information from the White Dwarf Team in the UK that there was an issue between our distribution company and the US Postal Service that has delayed the magazines from going out on time. This is why you have not seen your first issue as of yet, and I apologize about the delay. The samples that the distributor submitted to the USPS did pass, but when the USPS received the bulk shipment of magazines they stated there was an issue and rejected the shipment, but did not inform the distributor straight away until last Wednesday. The magazines all had to be relabeled at the distributor Thursday per what the USPS wanted and shipped out on Friday for delivery this week. This should not be an issue going forward. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

I quite enjoyed it in the end. It lasted me about a week in bus trips to read it all cover to cover. I found that even though I don't play 40k anymore (Been a loooong time since i played) I still enjoyed reading through most of the content about it. Perhaps it helps that it's Space Marine (Deathwatch) themed and a new army to the game, rather than being something focusing on Tyranids or Orks which I'm not interested in at all.

Early days of new White Dwarf, but this one was definitely enjoyable to read. Can't wait to get the next one in a months time.

Haven't read the mag since I used to play Warhammer 4+ years ago but I'm really liking the new one. I don't play 40k (yet) but I did used to and I've found most of the content I've read so far to be enjoyable. I really liked the Army of the Month feature with the fold out pages and can't wait until we get some AoS for that (although that Eldar army is damn nice).

From an advertising perspective it also seems to be working, showing all the shiny new 40k stuff has made me want to get myself a Kill Team :D

If you haven't gotten it make sure you call - they will send you a free copy.  The guy I spoke to even expedited it.

I did that.  My replacement showed up today.  Still no sign of the original.  It makes me nervous about future issues.

I subscribed right from the get go when they put the newly monthly offer up and just received my issue on Tuesday...After I had already contacted GW to let them know that I was still disappointingly sans the new White Dwarf.  GW has been great and they sent me out a replacement copy which I am still waiting on.

So the original issue shows up the other day, probably two weeks from when I should have received it, and to no surprise the Slaughterpriest is missing from the polybag.  I took pictures and sent them to GW as well as the name of their distributor from Long Island (east coast States) who simply sent the issue out in just the poly bag with no additional 'protection'; the Slaughterpriest never stood a chance of making it to my mailbox in such a state.  Like I said, not shocked but disappointed my free mini didn't show up and more disappointed that I haven't been able to get started on the Slaughterpriest to enter in to the TGA painting contest!  Hopefully the replacement shows up here soon so I can get it painted up.  Anyone else get their mini poached?

That being said, I really love the new WD format.  It's a good reflection of the halcyon days when WD was such a something to look forward to.  regardless if you are 40K of AoS, the content and presentation is top-notch.  And at the original offered $80 for the year it was a no brainer and money well spent.

I'm in Aus and didn't receive my initial copy, still hadn't a few days after it was available in stores so e-mailed customer service and they sent out a replacement copy - I'm in an area where post is slow so told them to hold off a few days extra, but still no sign, so they shipped another out, fantastic customer service, can't complain at all about that. The second copy actually seemed to arrive really quick (like, a day or two later), and was really well packaged in hard cardboard packing to protect the miniature and magazine, so from what you've said, I'd guess they've had issues with the miniature going missing/getting damaged and changed how they've packaged the next batch. Will be interesting to see how the next issue arrives (hopefully on time this time!).

As far as the magazine goes, I'm really happy with the content - I don't play 40k, but enioyed flicking through the 40k content as I always have done - a beautiful army is a beautiful army regardless of the system (and I'm now seriously tempted to invest in a Kill Team :P ). It seems to have more of the White Dwarf feel to it that I remember from back in the early 00's when I was first buying it rather than being an advertising board like the weeklies were. Most of the rules were a bit lost on me as I don't own the games, but I am now a bit tempted to go out and buy some of those games, so job well done on that front! Finally got around to reading the Battle Report today on my break at work too, had been saving it for when I had some time to enjoy it, and loved it; not as detailed as they used to be, but some great cinematic shots and fun to read, along with being easy to follow, which is pretty much all I was hoping for. Still need to read the Tale of 4 Gamers piece properly, that's probably tomorrow's break time reading :)

Interesting that the November cover is leaked before the October one! Does that mean the next two issues are already sitting in a warehouse somewhere? xD I won't be needing that Grombrindal code if anyone wants it.

I can't wait for the next issue, I'm really liking the return to the monthly format and hope they bring back the opinion pieces like Phil Kelly and Jeremy Vetock's too.
