Warhammer - The Old World

Take in mind that it's not "just" the production of 9x2 (plastic) kits, it's all the logisitics behind it:

  • Made to Order (ready for each faction).
  • Big Box for each army (warhouses, transport, etc...).
  • Building hype for each one (presentations).

That's exactly what TOW (and any other GW game) needs to face. But there are a few more things that are in the same production pipeline:

  • AoS 4.0 new edition box (it should be close to be ready).
  • AoS 4.0 all other boxes.
  • All 40k (and that's a lot of plastic to produce).
  • New Age of Darkness plastic army.

All this should be on GW tables, without taking in consideration any other "minor" release (Killteam, Warcry, Underworlds, any plastic model for Specialist Team, etc...), all printing files (books/supplements/packaging), logistics for each release (same as above), etc...

The plan is to cover this 9 factions during this edition. I don't understand the expectation that it is gonna be a tsunami of releases when they always talk like it is a long term project.

6-12 months for adding new factions to the webstore is the most viable roadmap.

I expect this to be the case too and fully understand why logistically it has to be so. It's just a bit of a shame though. For games like AoS and 40k it doesn't really matter if there is a staggered release as you can buy existing models and play with either an Index or the old Codex/Tome. I guess this is why people would prefer it to be a quicker drop for ToW.

It's nice all the faction rules have dropped up front though

I think it's great - builds up relatively quickly and then allows them to add in new/fresh kits the following year.

I wonder if we are likely to see new things for Dwarfs/Orcs and Goblins since the lists are already set? The Arcane Journals for Tomb Kings and Brets seem to only add special characters and variant units for kit bashing. They could do something different with the future ones, maybe we will find out this weekend. Have there been rumours for what might be coming? A dwarf juggernaught was a potential, or a king with shieldbearers , possibly Rangers? Not sure what might come for O&GS.

I actually don't buy into the "This is logistically imposssible" argument in regards to a potential 12 month ToW release schedule. The army boxes being released for the remaining 7 factions (Going by rumours they are called Battalions) and will not include the rulebook or other gaming accessories. So essentially it's like releasing 7 Combat Patrols for 40k or Vanguard/Spearhead boxes for AoS across the following 11 months! With a development lead of 4/5 years and containing 90%+ existing older plastic kits. The metal/resin models are Direct only (and MTO is a different kettle of fish with up to 180 days to fill orders).

You also need to condsider what the SDS actually has on their slate. Necromunda is pretty much a "complete" range. Apart from the occasional release and book I don't see the system getting much over the forseeable future. Frankly, some of the gang ranges are approaching the scale and scope of some 40k/AoS factions, how much more are they really going to add here? If you go to Warhammer.com the vast majority of the system is also in stock. The same can be said for Bloodbowl, MESBG, etc

The Horus Heresy is under the wing of the main design studio. The same as Kill Team, Warcry, Quest...

So SDS basically has Legions Imperialis and ToW. Legions Imperialis had a great launch. A lot of the line needs new stock. However, the main box is in stock. It is also faily limited in terms of development space.

I still personally think that we will see the 9 core factions get their Battalion/Arcane Journal + 2/3 plastic kits (Rereleases+new)  + 2/3 Resin kits in 2024. With 2025 seeing additions and second waves.

I kinda hope the O&G and Dwarf release is staggered as I played both of these back in the day and still have my old collections. I don't want to (or my wallet doesn't want to) buy two large boxes at the same time / in quick succession 😄

Seems like a lot of the Dwarf range was fairly new so it will be interesting to see what gets updated or if it is just the rumoured shield-born lord.

O&G rumour was the wyvern and pump wagon wasn't it?

Horus Heresy is still done by the Specialist Game team, who also work on all the other Specialist Games: TOW, Middle-earth, Legion Imperialis, Necromunda and Bloodbowl.

Right now the majority of TK and Bretonnia are out of stock, and we know both have more kits to be released (Foot Knights, Green Knight, mounted prophetess, Casket of Souls, Bone Giant, Carrion). It's safe to assume the remaining factions will receive a similar amount of attention that TK/Brets did.

Can they get all nine out this year, with their current stock/production issues? I think a roadmap will put that question to rest.

I think this is an interesting topic... Will they all get the same amount of love and new toys as the "launch factions" or are some going to be like a lot of AoS armies where they just get a single updated hero (as per dwarf rumour?)

I guess we will find out soon!

It's not about that, and nobody says that it's impossible to accomplish all boxes in 12 months (pretty sure that GW can do that). But the point is that there are a lot more things going on appart from "take the old moulds, clean a bit, and ready to go".

Yeah, and they have been working on that side of things for 4/5 years. I also think it is perfectly reasonable to expect second waves and future support for factions in 2025/26 etc. In terms of a Battalion Box with 1 new Plastic model, Dice set and Arcane Journal, with a smattering of resin/metal kits as direct only? Yeah. My money is still on the 9 core getting that in 2024 or into early 2025 at the latest.

The Old World Survey

Hello!

I am conducting a survey on The Old World, primarily to gauge the types of people interested (Returning or new), Army popularity, and knowledge of the setting. I would really appreciate any responses to the survey. Id happily share results if it is of interest to the forum?

Done. I personally think you could have done more asking about the armies, like different questions for the ones you already own, the ones you want to collect now that you have a second chance, why so, etc...

What do you plan to do with this information? Do you have a channel?

I know I posted something similar the other day, but somebody posted this on a Facebook page. If even a percentage of these came back I’d be over the moon (and then whine that the other percent wasn’t out yet 😅).

Anyone know what GW’s CEO’s favourite wine or flowers?

If it is Chorfs rumours say they won't come back in order to not step over the chorfs release for AoS. For the rest, I think it would be there for a limited time as MTO.

Thank you! Apologies I ought to have spent more time fleshing it out. They are definitely things I will look into in the future though!

I created the survey for a few reasons.

1) Generally intrigue into whether the old world is raching many new players or mainly returning, in addition to what army popularity is which once published might be helpful for any stats shows etc that there may be as it gives people a rough idea of playerbases. This is subject to the amount of data and reach of the survey though for accuracy.

2) As someone who is personally new to The Old World I wanted to start some introductory videos on the world and lore of the game for both new and old players and help foster a welcoming community. I wanted to get an idea of what sort of armies people are interested in and the types of videos the community find engaging so hopefully I can make some content which is beneficial to as many folk as possible.

I hope that has helped! Thank you again for completing the survey.

Gosh I'd be over the moon to see the Warhammer Forge model range back in rotation!! I missed much too much of it; I'd even spring on the realm of battle tile at this point hahaha.

I think the Chaos Dwarfs are likely to be no-shows: GW is cooking something plastic for 'em, and quite a few of their biggest models were abruptly pulled from the store when their mould broke and the kit wasn't selling well enough to justify remaking it.

Some of the best work GW has put out to date imho; I don't think I disliked a single thing from the range. Even if not all of it was "for me" it was all excellent

Would love a lot of the Empire stuff to come back, but jeez, that demigryph Theodore Bruckner is riding is legit terrifying.

I mean, it's like weirdly unsettling to me. Really glad they went with more "lion" instead of bird for the plastic kit. I still like it, and certain features would look great on the knights (sharper beak/claws), but somehow the FW one just looks "wrong", like it's more a creature of Chaos than a noble beast. Still like it though.

It's the front paws, I think. Or rather, lack thereof, instead being the claws of a bird of prey. The plastic models also look somehow slightly chunkier (floofy bird-cats 🐱), and the leaner FW model looks ravenous (scary beast 🦅).

Fimir! I'd completely forgotten that Forgeworld had done them. Smashing ol' beasties, those.

And as for that Greater Daemon of Slaanesh... grrr! I'd always had a mental road-map that I'd get that model as a reward to myself when I'd collected and painted the first phase of my Slaanesh host (which was a BIG load of miniatures.) Now that I'm at that point, the damn thing is gone. Well, as good as gone... I ain't forking out Ebay prices for it.

Did they even do a "last chance to buy" on stuff like that? If they did, I comprehensively missed it!

I quite like that about Bruckner's demigryph. Wrong is exactly that, it's head is huge. A nice reminder that even as noble beasts and symbols of the Empire, demigryphs, hippogriffs, griffons (whether one head or two) ultimately are theorised to be weird mutants whose origin can be traced back to chaos.

Would be cool. As with my "GW hates skaven" running theme (a meme at this point, I'll reckon) it's one thing where I'd really love to be wrong and eat a big L because it would actuaally be a W.

Shieldbearers should be quite obvious as the description in Forces of Fantasy doesn't match either the old king or Thorgrim Grudgebearer as it there are three bearers in the profile.

Being that the game is from the same team as Middle-Earth, and there has been practically no releases for it for year or no, there should be some amount of resources dedicated for this release. Would be very surprised if the existing models for the core armies wouldn't be on the shelves quickly. At least all dwarves and beastmen that share models for ToW and AoS are currently out of stock in the GW webstore, which would support that something is happening.
