The Rumour Thread

Glancing at some of the background in the sprues and brews video, looks like interesting times for gorgers.

Seems that with the coming of the era of the beast, they’ve been more active, grouping up in packs under these newly appearing alpha gorgers or Clawbacks, who adorn themselves with tusks ornaments and cloaks in imitation of tyrants. The fresh attacks seem to be associated with the appearance of living mawpits, something cheerfully encouraged by the butchers.

In a wonderfully creepy note, they’ve been observed to begin making crude weapons, which obviously follows the new plastic minis but is a nice touch, and some seem to have developed a primitive form of magic deep in their caves. These ‘Cave Howlers’ can give voice to their curse and their shrieks are able to drive enemies mad with hunger.

It’s all very unsettling, in an “uh oh, they’re learning” horror movie kind of way.

This pushes me towards buying the box. Guess im joining the Mawtribes and CoS soon.

Seems this bands lately have options to atleast get a couple of them to build all the posible combinations.

Btw I did a post on reddit recounting everything that needs to go off. Gonna link it cos I'm too lazy to copypaste it:

Thing is, the countdown ended with 10 metal miniatures, 4 resins, and 3 plastic kits that have gotten old (not counting from the Seb Perbet era because some gw designers make turn crazy if not)

IF they revamp skavens, (and it's a very big if) they'll just probably sent to hfil all the resin and metal stuff, they'll still have the problem of a very big release. If all the old units got updated, even having modular kits into acount, that would leave us with 11-12 new plastic kits. Which is already an insane number for a gw release. Just the bare minimum revamp would have to take into account releasing 3 new Skyrre/Pestilens/Moulder heroes and 4 new units (one for each clan too). Plus at least 1 more new stuff, as GW loves to create new units for revamps.

My theory tho is that gw will try to spread all the new things. There's window for 3 events:

-Dawnbringer, best scenario for releasing a new generic hero

-Warcry warband. For GW the safest thing would be to make a Moulder team with rat ogres, rat giants, and a named lord, and then erasing those things from the battletome.

-Starter box. Another good ocassion to make an Island of Blood, this time separating the sprues.

But in any case, just "the bare minimum" means a release big af

It's not a very big if. Whitefang has a 100% success rate on predictions. They have NEVER been wrong. Skaven are going to be the 4th edition launch faction. Looking back counting kits in launch boxes but not duplicates Kruleboyz got 11 new kits, Tyranids 12, Necrons and Nighthaunt 15 each and 14 for Deathguard. All that means that the number of kits you are suggesting is not merely possible but likely.

I guess and hope that some well established and beautiful Skaven kits stays with us and doesn't end up taking a realese slot for something more in need of a redone and costing the double.

IMHO, everything from the last big realese (2009) needs to stay. Clanrats and Stormvermins aren't nearly as old as, for example, the genasterlers or termagaunts, that got remplaced with the last tyranids expansion. Discontinuating them for some really minor design improvement would be a waste (and we'll probably end up paying them 35 euros for ten models instead of 30 euros for 20...). They aged awesomely and stand amasingly alongside modern minis.

But monks and night runner? Hell yes!

Looking at Necrons and Tyranids the newest plastic kits that got replaced have been 2002 Necron Warriors and 2005 Genestealers respectively. Anything else that was newer and got replaced was resin. So its quite likely that the 2009 Clanrats/Stormvermin won't get refreshed.

Could still happen since they are the basic troops but not as likely as you might think at first, especially if they focus on a specific aspect like Clan Eshin with Nightrunners and Gutterrunners. If they mainly focus on a specific aspect that would also help newer players build an army that feels finished without having to match new and old kits.

The Skaven relaunch is going to be not only a monumental release for AOS but for Warhammer as a whole. They are one of GW's defining IPs and without the Lore restraints of the Old World and with the technical leaps and bounds that have come from miniature design they are poised to be the best looking Army GW produces.

Completely agree with @Swamp Trogg. Clanrats and Stormvermin are maybe a little heavy on the ranked up poses (more so the stormvermin tbh) but really, they hold up very well. Characterful, solid detail, and lend themselves well to painting 50+ of the little devils. Almost every other unit in @Garrac‘s excellent post is in more critical need of an update.

That’s based on need, of course, not necessarily what GW will do, through I struggle to imagine anything new or worthwhile a refreshed clanrats kit could bring other than a price increase.

Even if we can't image it yet I'm sure a new kit would look way better than the old one. BUT the big difference is that I would still buy the old one if they don't get a refresh and I can't say the same about many other Skaven kits

I've got a rumor for y'all today.  Comes straight from a dream I had last night plus a few extra ideas I had on them since this morning :D.  I guess technically it's not a rumor per-se or is it????

Fyreslayers -

  • Diabladroth.  Thing of a cross between the Diablo 3 incarnation of Diablo and a Magmadroth.  It's a 14 wound monster on a 100mm base that stands upright.
  • Salamand Riders.  Flying salamander-mounted duardin cavalry. Not as big as stormdrake riders.
  • Lava Gholems.  Just fiery gholem-kind.  Or something like that... I think.  The dream is fuzzy at that point with FS.

Kharadron Overlords -

  • Grundstok Pummeler - Think Primaris Invictor Tactical Warsuit, but with the style of Big Daddy from Bioshock.  Idk how it plays, but in my dream it came in units of 2 at around 100 points per model.
  • Arkanaut Interceptors... I think - Fuzzy on this one too, but it was basically a 1-man gunhauler.  Sorta intrudes on the space of gyrocopters I guess, but I think the idea was that it was a squadron of 3-5 or something.
  • Grundstok Aethermatic Platform - Think Chinese Spy Balloon but with guns.  Unmanned floating platform controlled remotely via some techno-aethermatic process.  Not as mobile and unable to control objectives or transport anything, but has good guns and maybe a magic dampening field.
  • Aether Gholems.  Same as the lava gholems, but all kharadron-y.

I know I dreamt about some other factions too, but I can't remember them at all now :(

Tbh even then, if they’re more detailed or more dynamic… they’re clanrats. The average player is seldom going to be painting less than about 40 of them. They’re cool but they need to be comparatively affordable and capable of being churned out efficiently, meaning an appropriate level of detail/texture/etc.

I genuinely think it’s a case where “good enough” (as in, good enough not to drive people away from collecting the range, unlike e.g. the old ardboys) is actually better than an all-singing, all-dancing fancy glow up.

As you say, it’s likely that it’s other ancient resin/metal minis, particularly high-cost low-value ones like jezzails/weapon teams/rats that really push people away. That and the tragic uggos like the rat ogres, which had superior replacements of sorts which were then dropped.

Part of the argument for Clanrats getting an updated sculpt is that the edition starter sets almost always have some of the 'basic battleline' included in them, though with the Skaven clan system they could maybe just include some different (or entirely new) battleline chumps to fill that slot.  Personally I think we're quite likely to see new clanrats, it's the more elite/specialised plastic kits like stormvermin or plague monks that might stick around for a bit, but I'm willing to be surprised.

I'm guessing we'll see cities or book three next. As far as I'm aware the only other unreleased announced product for autumn is Legions Imperialis but I'd be surprised if they stuck to the heresy for two weeks in a row.
