The Rumour Thread

Not a bad thought, but it should be mentioned that the rotmire are the exception not the rule. The majority of cultists were total throwaway units nobody took unless they were proxying for marauders. I'm hopeful that GW figured this out and have them all meaningful updates in the new book but only time will tell. I'd love to start seeing some warbands start making their way to AoS.

I imagine that giving all the same kind of units to the same faction didn't help with the rules creation. Slaves have 12 warcry warband in it's roster nowadays, all units of around 10 small humans with a bigger model or animals here and there. Unless you give special rules/profiles to every model option, like they used to do with the underwolrds warbands, you end having to use abilities to represent what make them special. Them it becomes a matter of which abilities are more useful/powerful. Maybe having a generic "Chaos cultist" unit with 10 models, which you could choose one ability to have when you include it in your list would work better, at least which model you choose to use would become more a matter of the flavour of chaos you want in your army.

Someone had the interesting idea it could be a Cities of Sigmar warband with Darkling Aelves from Excelsis since they do have a strong presence there guarding it’s harbors and making trade trips to the floating leviathan carcass city of Bilgewater.

The more I think about it, the more I'm thinking it might be Scourge Privateers/Black Ark Corsairs.

Which would be funny considering we just left the underwater themed seasons.

Scourge Privateers are one if the few Cities subfactions that got into Soulbound as a player option. That is significant since other jobs one would expect like anything Freeguild related is suspiciously absent, and we can now guess that it is because they get redesigned soon. We saw the same with Gravelords previously: The Soulbound core book didn't have any of the iconic Legions of Nagash monsters because it came out shortly before their redesign/rebranding. So if anything from current Cities sticks around, my money would be on those guys. If they get an Underworlds warband that would be a pretty strong signal.

Soulbound originally had Freeguild Veteran as a class right? Could definitely believe someone at GW swatted their hands away before it went to print because of the upcoming update, given how far in advance GW designers work.

Does make me wonder what the deal with Dispossessed is, since they don't have any classes either but all the remaining Dwarf models are what released immediately before (well, a year) Fantasy was squatted.

Gnarlwood influencer reviews are coming out.

Sounds like it's a soft reboot to make the game far more accessible (no deckbuilding, Championship relegated to the bin side format). I liked the deck building element, but I see why from a financial perspective they don't want Lil Timmy's brain to melt at having to collect and arrange cards rather than him and Lil Bobby just having set-decks all the time.

Very much a "we don't care about the oldblood" situation. It's going to be very interesting to see how this turns out for them. Either it's going to work and swell the popularity with people who find it far more approachable, or Underworld's reputation as a TCG-with-models is already too set in stone and all they'll have done is alienate the people who were most passionate and willing to buy everything to the point it cripples the bottom line far worse than if they'd kept sailing straight.

We stopped playing Underworlds because we were tired to continue buying decks and warbands that we didn't care, but after this changes, we are already talking about coming back again soon.

I would say that we are still part of the "oldblood" community too.

Mm, whilst I did enjoy the deck building element, and followed along with the first few seasons of underworlds, it did become too much to keep track of after a while.  My ideal solution would be that each warband can build a deck from a specific set of cards, which are supplied with the warband itself, so there's still some flexibility but you don't have to try and work out what exactly you need to buy to get all the cards you need.

They don't normally go quite this narrative with the underworlds bands, but I wonder if our mystery symbol could be Anvilguard resistance themed, people who escaped the city and resent Morathi's annexation of it exist in the lore but are unlikely to get actual model kits, so underworlds could be a decent place for them.  So basically a Cities warband with a scourge privateer theme, I guess.

My local scene was really into Underworlds with Shadespire up to Beastgrave, we used to have 18-20 people in tournaments. COVID put an end to that, obviously... but with Gnarlwood, a lot if not all of the old players are asking about the game again and the questions keep coming: "when are we going to do a tournament again? Who wants to split a new box? Are demos available? I have an old warband, how can I play again?"

Our Underworlds community is back in action and I'm all for it.

You can still do full deck building by using the relic system.

I am starting to see all these "sidegames" and the main game as a parts of the same thing. Its all AoS and it gives me the chance to add awesome looking models to my armies. I own a few warbands and i have never played Underworlds. Warbands like Mollogs Mob and Rippas Snarlfangs have been a blast to paint. Cant wait to see whats in store for this new one. I already know i will instabuy it when its released without seeing the models though XD.

I am 100% with on them being a good supplement for kitbashes and the hobbying aspect. Rules-wise they're a bit hit or miss which is why I don't see them as AoS releases. I am more than a touch disappointed with seeing factions who really needed a boost get the hero + tome maintenance mode treatment too.

A growing worry is that most of the rumour engine pics will turn out to be just another warcry war band since it doesn't seem to matter which factions needs a new wave of minis or rules. That said, I think it is high time we start to adjust expectations since AoS isn't nearly as big as 40k so constantly comparing 40k releases to AoS is inevitably going to lead to disappointment. I've even started to dip back into 40k because of hobbyist reasons (even if I think AoS is a better game).

The rules are quite solid and seeing channels like Tabletop tactics who average 40k views starting to enjoy AoS is a nice boost in visibility and interest. They've also inspired me to try 1,5k more games since those seem to strike a really nice balance between army size and time. Indeed, it has poked a massive hole in the argument that you have to play 2k games since "it is balanced around that."

Which would be funny considering we just left the underwater themed seasons.

It’d match the odd cycle tho.

Beastgrave mountain gets Deepkin crabs & fish

Harrowdeep under the ocean gets multiple birds and a fire Khorne band.

Now Gnarlwood could get sea themed privateers and our lovable Fire-themed lava duardin to scare those Hashites that their masters came early. 😛

I think the best warband-to-setting match they did was Lumineth in Beastgrave as they got several cards that specifically told everyone else they came to the wrong place at the wrong time now that a mountain bending Stoneguard entered an actual mountain.

image.jpeg.dadb64ad9259926d1e659cf4d5e21f92.jpeg

Speaking of Beastgrave the Gnarlroots book confirms the predatory mountain that devoured travelers was destroyed in the Life-Quake and either the Seraphon or Bonesplitterz were the ultimate winners(don’t worry about about the Silent People, they migrated out of their by the time Broken Realms started).

beastgrave.png

Interestingly it goes straight from Beastgrave to the Warbands traveling through ancient tunnels until they became writhing limb-like tangles and they emerged into the Gnarlwoods across the sea from the ruins of Beastgrave.

I’m guessing a possible hinted explanation why those warbands were in Harrowdeep is because the Nethermaze made clones of them as per pictures of Skaven being birthed from pods and in the Eshin & gnoblar artwork there’s pods all over the place.

edit: oh and a number of Nethermaze Revelation Cards with people like Steelheart finding out a terrible truth and yelling “It’s all so clear now!”. Seeing you’re just a copy and that’s why you can’t recall entering there would do it.

Could be the moon daemons felt that Shadespire inter-realm connection and fiddled with it to make tough hosts for their parasites as well the explorers trying to see where all the ships disappeared too. A darker version of Iliatha’s cloning.

So the survivors we see in the Gnarlwood cards so far like the profiteers are safe from the parasites if that pans out.

I'm intrigued by the underworlds lore! I didn't realise there was so much to it, I was aware of the occasional novels bit forgot about the rules books etc.

Is there any news around which warbands are still going? which ones from the originals have made it to the Gnarlwood etc? Which ones have been killed off permanently?

Are they part of larger groups?

Yeah, it could be Belakor with the horns and mouth grill(like Eternus). Matches some of his looks and in the new Warcry lore it’s noted his Legionaries are scouring Gnarlwoods to destroy the Seraphon ship because an artifact of a Old One connected to the wind is in it that might completely undo his Cursed Skies scheme.

So it wouldn’t be shocking to see more Belakor commandos pop up.

So far we know Gwynne Ironsoul(or possibly her clone) made it out of the Nethermaze but was afflicted with the shadow parasites.

Picture of her, she’s been the low key Stormcast face of Malign Portents.
image.jpeg.8eafdad5036a3bcc63db70a3c17c8bae.jpeg
unknown.png

She now fights in Gnarlwoods leaving the question open if that’s her from Beastgrave or  Nethermaze.

image.jpeg.39e5b7d561573a0ccd4f0931128f7a75.jpeg

For she did canonically go to Beastgrave. In Harrowdeep she appeared mysteriously..

“Gwynne Ironsoul is a formidable agent of the Sacrosanct Chambers. Ironsoul and her companions – Tavian of Sarnassus and the redoubtable Brodus Blightbane – are Sequitors of the Hammers of Sigmar, first and most storied of the God-King Sigmar’s Stormhosts. These specialists channel the magical tempest of Azyr through their weapons. They are trained to battle the ethereal and the daemonic, but after straying within the bounds of the Dreadfane, even they may have found their match. They long sought a way to shatter its mechanisms and free themselves from its cruel grasp, and believed their quest successful when they finally set foot in the blood-soaked caverns of Ghur. Alas, Beastgrave would soon prove to be just another trap…”

The Fyreslayer Chosen Axes got off easier. Their tome mentions after Teclis ended the Necroquake they were able to help stop the Shadespire curse and fulfill their vow to the void city they were hired to protect and went home to their Lodge.

However it also mentioned that going home as long lost heirs after being gone for centuries could cause a bloody civil war of succession issues.

By the Gnarlwood cards it looks to be implied they wound up being employed in the Slayer Cliffs city using their survivalist skills in the woods as the other Fyreslayers do there.

“This frantic rush to claim the Gnarlwood has created a gloriously profitable opportunity for the elite mercenaries of the Fyreslayer lodges. They offer their services to all who can afford their price, hacking their way through the deadly tangle of the forest with an eager song of battle on their lips.”

image.jpeg.3ec0b01122c3fb28606bdcd1849d71a6.jpeg

And the Steelheart champions were said to be remaining in Shadespire to keep delving into it’s curse. Seems they’re staying a lead face even now.

image.jpeg.6639503ede749b42b898df5a522c9819.jpeg

And we know by virtue of them avoiding rotation the Kharadron and Sylvaneth warbands are still kicking.

image.jpeg.60f5cc739849d8077783f784191b3bf9.jpeg

The Kurnothi are still alive too, they’re sharing problems with the other warbands that Ghur is putting all animals on steroids.

the orruks are on hulk steroids too.

image.jpeg.3324d5e2aec2fa8e1ec3f0feb2e1133b.jpeg

The only warbands I’d say probably are gone-gone right now are some of the chaos ones and the Shadespire skeletons finally put to rest.

I was gonna say Spiteclaw too but his rats seem to be between going feral and mutating so this could end them if they fall to being monsters instead of moving on to the next season.

image.jpeg.c3e1d3fccde48216886d239d3d661955.jpeg

Not the worst fate yet, the Stalker NightHaunts who were poachers in life so Nagash replaced their heads with horse skulls as ironic punishment are suffering through Ghur finishing the job…

image.jpeg.527049c093ab7b975fefa0bc8d104a60.jpeg

(also really liking the Deck focus here. “Delvers” makes your guys explorers or wizards to go after objectives and control the field or you can use the “Tooth and Nail” deck for all-out attack and turn into monsters & beasts.)
