Gaming Accessories - What do you use?

Ben

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm interested to know what your most used gaming accessories are.  I'm particularly interested in the Non-GW items.

If I were to list mine they are;

Tape Measure - I use an ikea one.  Its small and cheap.  I also ways carry one along with the GW lump of Sigmarite range finder.

Combat Gauge.  (i'm not very good at this Non GW lark!)

Scenery Dice.  Tooting my own horn but I use them in every game without fail.

Dice Bag - I have one of Annies knitted items.

Dice - I use small yellow ones and also my own 'Bad Dice' Dice. I also have some d3's

Dice Cup - I have a Q-Workshop Leather dice cup.  Its so hipster but i don't care.

Skull Beads - I use these for marking wounds

an 'i' device - sometimes its my phone.  or my iPad.  I don't really use books anymore.  Although I would kill for a 8th edition rulebook size Generals handbook

Man Bag.  I have a fancy Ted Baker letter satchel. My wife got it me  a few years ago.   Goes to every games night with me and holds all my stuff

--

I used to carry a note book.  I fell out of the habit of it but will be getting back into it soon.

  • Ben changed the title to Gaming Accessories - What do you use?

Heres mine.

Dice: I always use my Black Sun and Blackout dice along with Holy Wars

Dice Bag: Have two custom made bags one from the Annie the Dice Lady my Breaking Bad bag and another from a dear friend.

COMBAT GAUGE: Holy Wars combat gauge from 6 Squared has been a God send and an item I can't play without.

Tape Measure: I use a small PerforMax with touch brake.

Mortal Realms Tokens: Need to make more of these. I have printed out the tokens and put them on acrylic caps much like the Infinity players do with their tokens.

Laser Pointer: Since I do most of my painting on Holy Wars tables line of sight can be an issue so I picked up the Army Painter laser pointer and I have found it to be critical.

Battletomes or printed Warscrolls: Yes, I'm still use this form of ancient tech and I love them.

Bendy Boards Scenery Tokens: I have been using these thinking about upgrading to dice or something else.

US Army backpack: Holds all of the above.

  • Dice that match my army (SO nerd)
  • Combat Gauge, I use a really old one. Love it
  • Tape measure. I have a plethora...though I admit, I like the ones at the LGS that smell like gasoline.
  • Man purse. It's the leather GW one they released with some rules version or other. I keep my other must have in it
  • iPad. I have all the books/rules on it.

I like custom made stuff

wound counters I just ordered today from sherrant1992 on Ebay that I had custom made to fit a my Clan Pestilens stuff

I've been working with Lasercut Architect to design movement trays to help move my horde army around and to fit the optimum number of Plague Monks around a Furnace to give it an 11" movement bonus

P1020896.jpg

P1020897.jpg

P1020894.jpg

I got a 13" gauge made to quickly measure Skaven synergies and spells range, and then two dice stack boxes (one for 36 dice one for 100 dice) to help me count out dice fast when I need something for a big roll (or other than piles of 10) I was contemplating using a 'Boggle' set for the comedy aspect but I figured I'd try these out for now, they are made for 12mm dice.

a sweet KR multicase to keep all my dice and stuff together

P1020754.jpg

loads of custom made tokens for all my Pestilens stuff, and a sweet gauge all from Counterattackbases.co.uk

P1020757.jpg

some random dice including Ben's scenery dice

P1020756.jpg

a cheap tablet, Lenovo Tab A2 A7-20, 7inch 8GB tablet, rrp £59.99 from Amazon

P1020761.jpg

In future I'm going to look at having some of my own custom made battle mats printed up in China once I get around to making some designs, you can order them to made on Ali Express.

Tape Measure - I actually use the red GW one.  I like the fact that it's measured up in plain inches and doesn't retract until you press the button.  I also use a range rule of some kind, much easier to measure some things.

Scenery Dice - Yup these do make an appearance for AoS

Dice Bag - I've a fabric one that I got made that has two compartments in to hold:

Dice - 100 red and black marbled ones and 20 transparent red ones in 12mm, plus various larger ones which I prefer when rolling one or two.  I also have a couple of the old GW dice "cube" sets as I use these for marking the turn

Tokens - A handful of little white plastic skull tokens, not enough for AoS

Digital aid - Although I do have an ipad I generally only use this at home and tend to use the AoS app on my phone instead

Reference Sheets - I've got the card version of the rules that came in the main box set and use my warscroll designer to compile my army onto as few sheets as humanly possible.

Books - Generals Handbook and Bloodbound Battletome, however the battletome will be left at home as crib sheets and the app make it unecessary

Bag - The man bag from the Horus Heresy weekender - really nice bag!

Case - Fabric KR multicase for the army.  Plenty of pockets and pouches to contain most of the above

I need to create some better tokens and markers at some point, certainly need a better wound marker for anything with 5 or more wounds

Dice. Specifically Casino Dice. I love the feeling when roll such dice and I won't hear complication like "those dice are weighted!" or something like that.

Dice Tray. I hate dice cup or dice tower. I like to roll them naturally. A nice dice tray will keep them tidy and preserve the dice when you use expensive casino dice (of which a single drop to the floor = RIP).

Tape Measure. I use themed one, like the Age of Sigmar Rangefinder.

Combat Gauge. Purely for aesthetic purpose.

Tokens. The set of token that you get from the store in Season of War campaign is quite useful. But for wound count I use small dice instead.

AoS App. running in iPad is quite convenient. I got all the books in it including General's Handbook.

Carrying Case. Citadel Crusade Case, actually 2 of them to handle all of my Stormcast.

Tape Measure - A random one I've had for 15+ years (Rabone Chesterman "Supalok")

Combat Gauge.  Nope

Scenery Dice.  Need to get some of these ...

Dice Bag - A large zip-lock freezer bag :$

Dice - Assortment of various Chessex pretty (scarab & borealis ranges) 12mm D6's (multiple colours to allow rolling all a unit's attack types together).

Wound Markers - Assortment of Chessex polyhedral dice

Aids - print-outs of the warscrolls for units I have (printed 2-up onto card, and cut out)

Bag.  Cardboard box HMV used to send me a 4-disc DVD boxed set once - holds everything except books

Need to get/make some status counters for mystic shield, charge, run, etc ...

Combat gauge:  you all realize how easy it is to make these yourself, right?  Like, with a ruler, a knife, and leftover movement trays you don't need any more?  I made three in 15 minutes.  Snagged a couple others as tournament promos that were 3D printed, but while beautiful they don't measure 3"/2"/1"/0.5" any better than the almost-free ones that I made...

My combat gauge is short clear plastic ruler from WHSmiths :P

I make my own counters and objectives out of bitz on 25mm bases (for example a shield resting by a raised spear for 'Mystic Shield')

For wound counters I bring along my D&D dice selection - D12s are handy as are D20s.

That's it for the special stuff, otherwise it's the GW tape measure and a few dice cubes (one with mixed dice I can use for other things). I use an iPad mini for warscrolls and bring along the GHB for rules.

Would you believe I've never once thought of just sticking a shield to a base for a Mystic Shield marker?  In hindsight, it's so obvious...

I use green numeral 6 sided and 12 sided dice to keep track of wounds. An old Games Workshop logo tape measure and also found these on EBay,£3.95 from the Troll Trader. They are pretty cool for the price. They are made from MDF burned and punched on an A4 sheet. The turn tracker has a choice of hammer or chaos star, it needed a bit of assembly and light sanding so it turned. They also smell of smoked haddock which is nice - must be the burning process!

How are people preparing for battle with their roster sheets?

I've been using my iDevices and printed warscrolls, however; I seem to forget rules that would make the difference throughout the game.

I'm thinking about creating a roster sheet with all the rules of my army and units in the phase that they can be activated. Has anyone created or found something similar to help them manage their roster?

I can't believe I didn't see this thread before making mine. I guess it's still slightly different though...  Oh well.

Me being new to the hobby and all,  I haven't bought a tape measure yet. Still on the painting faze. But I will be using your replies to make a shopping list.

  • 2 weeks later...
I've been working with Lasercut Architect to design movement trays to help move my horde army around and to fit the optimum number of Plague Monks around a Furnace to give it an 11" movement bonus

Some cool looking tokens James! Might have to get some of them myself.

About the plague furnace movement tray: wouldn't the furnace be unable to move? My understanding is that it remains a separate unit from the plague monks and moves at a separate time. When encircled, would it be able to move at all? Or if the plague monks moved first, and lapped around like that where they stopped moving, the furnace wouldn't be able to get back into the circle. Personally I find keeping the two together, as the monks have to keep bunching up around and behind it. It hampers their ability to get out and charge stuff effectively.

Tape Measure - GW Rangefinder.

Dice - A mix of wooden Sylvaneth GW dice and blue 'A Gathering of Might' dice.

Scenery Dice - Great idea Ben and well done for being the first one to think of it and market it.

Dice Tray - An old plastic takeaway tray.

Wound markers - Small red and white plastic rings (like tiny polo mints) which slip over little stands. I alternate colours on high wound models to make them easier to count.

Turn markers - I have two large 'A Gathering of Might' dice to keep track of the turn number.

iPad - Personally, I love the GW app. I find it so quick to flick between warscrolls and find the 4 pages of rules etc plus it takes up so much less space than having lots of books out on the table.

Combat Gauge - I have cut off the cord though because it's a pain in the bum.

Laser line - I don't use it nearly as much as I used to in 8th but it does still come in useful from time to time.

You get one decent move off at the start. The rule reads, yadda yadda yadda however many monks surround it AT THE START of the movement phase. So you move the monks off first after counting up how many surround it, and make sure you split them at the front off to each side, so there is room for the furnace to rush forward. It works pretty well for 3 places of power and gets you the objective turn 1. It's just keeping it alive after that, as it takes a lot of flack. Or sure just keep them all together. I havent been using my trays much recently, but sure they will get some game time eventually.

As a forgetful man, and programmer, I was thinking of creating something to help with this. Perhaps it could take a list from scrollbuilder.com as input, and output a page with headings for hero phase, combat phase etc. and a bullet point for each rule that can be used at that point. I guess it would take some work to input details for all the rules for all the warscrolls, but I could make it so it's easy for people to add their own so I don't have to bother.

Ah cool. Using it like a slingshot works, I'm just not keen on the fiddliness of having to shuffled that round it, if you want them to move together. My pestilens rarely get on the table for that reason.

As a frequent Chaos player, I think I need a tape recorder that says "Remember to roll for Unpredictable Destruction you muppet" at 10 minute intervals.

The Troll Trader Tokens are very handy. You can write custom ones on the backs.

I also need the tape player to then mutter +1 to wound from juggerlords ability and i might actually manage to use all my synergy.
