Time to go digital.

Recommended Posts

So I just noticed that the six or so battletomes I bought on ITunes got updated. GW have incorporated all the recent faqs into updated warscrolls, changed the points and added the new summoning rules.

There have been quite a few complaints about rules bloat and confusion with all the faqs recently.

This solves that problem.

I went digital because I live in Japan and physical battletomes are extremely expensive over here but it does seem like the way forward with the new way GW are handling their rules.

So, who is going digital from now on and if not, why not?

I envy people that can do that. Stores here don't like people using digital rules, because they don't sell them and because it is hard to check if it is the legal thing or just a download. I hope that if GW goes full digital in the future they will still leave the option to buy actual books to people.

Do you play in GW store? Because if GW store doesn't like people using rules provided digitaly by its owners then that is weird.

There is only one GW store in my country, and it is 330km away from me. Plus from what I know it  only runs demo games, and no actual games happen in it.

Ok, then that's less weird, but still weird. Looks like it depends on the shop's manager, because my FLGS doesn't discourage digital rules and I live in the same country as you. I just can't understand that way of thinking - digital rules are official product of GW and it shouldn't matter you didn't buy it in that shop. It scares away the customers if they are forced to buy battletome second time, because of someone's whims.

In my opinion you should get the digital copy free if you bought physical book. It is way too steep to treat them as seperate products. I can't imagine myself ever paying for digital if I bought paper battletome. Also, it is GW business to keep all the rules clear and available to everyone.

Digital makes alot of sense, going full digital would allow GW to have real 'living' rulesets. Warscrolls, points etc could all be constantly tweaked.

However...

I like physical books! :D I also get abit of a headache reading off a screen for any length of time.

I think the updating is only for enhonced editions from iBooks. I have the epub versions and they do not update and as far as I know they don't put up an updated version on warhammer digital to re download.

If you got the Skirmish rules, check if the newer factions ar in there. Because I they updated for me a couple of months ago ?

I much prefer reading an actual physical book as well.  I'll always buy the physical book of any product I'm interested in.  This is mainly because I'm an old hippie luddite socialist pinko commie.  I will sometimes purchase the digital copies as well but only to use as occasional reference material during games.  I never read through  books digitally because I'm simply don't enjoy it; makes my eyes hurt and head ache. ?

GW is welcome to do as they please but I sincerely hope they never stop releasing physical books.  In the end, this is a hobby done simply for personal enjoyment.  If I no longer enjoy it (for whatever reason) I'll stop doing it and go somewhere else.  Luckily, there's no reason for them to stop releasing books in both formats and every reason to keep doing so!

I would caution anyone who thinks GW should discontinue physical books entirely in favor of digital only.  As with any alternative technology, there are always many people who prefer the old way of doing things and many people who prefer both ways.  And there are always many, many more of those people than proponents of the alternative tech are willing to admit. ☺️

I went full digital via the AoS app over a year ago now and I've never looked back. Having books that update and access to battalion info directly in the app is great, and I don't have to worry about where to store my battletomes and GHBs (which is a real issue at the moment, because I don't have a lot of space).

The best thing, though, was definitely the first time I saw a product get its errata integrated. I wish my WH40k books were digital too now.

Mine are all epubs, and they all just updated.

I definitely don't think GW should go digital only, but if you are looking for convenience and are bothered by having to look in multiple places for up to date info, it is an increasingly good option.

I'll have to check that out. Did you re download them or was it passive?

I thought that I would like digital books better, but it takes me much longer to flip between pages with digital and I have to unlock my tablet every time or try to read it on a tiny phone screen.

I only have space/weight issues when I bring books for AoS,40k,and 30k at the same time which I've stopped doing. The main downside to physical books to me is when things change. I have a huge pile of books from past editions that I cannot bring myself to get rid of.

I have the same issue with digital books too. Bookmarks help, but I usually find they get put everywhere.

And look, I love that the codices have a good fluff section, but some of the issues I have with playing is how the books are poorly laid out (not in any sort of logical order) and I spend most of the time flipping between pages.

That's why I like the warscroll cards because I can leave my book open to the allegiance abilities and use the cards for the units.

I think it is different in a big city, where there is 2-3 stores. If a store owner puts up an unliked rule, people will just jump ship and he ends up with money stuck in stuff he will never sell. But when a town has 1 store, your more or less at the mercy of what ever he deems to be legal or not.

Ok, I can agree with that. But that kind of behavior is really shameful. Well, I hope that second shop with better manager will open in your city and you'll be able to change places for games.

Back to topic: I can see positives of digital rulebooks (it takes up less space and is now finally updating without re-purchase), but I still like to read printed books. It's easier for eyes and I can't accidentaly delete it (believe me, that could happen to the digital version with my skills :) ).

App for the win.

Load everything up into "my battle" and it's much quicker for referencing. You can also add the battlions, mission etc all here if you've also purchased them in app.

The new version is much cleaner as well.

If you have a good tablet it's great. The books are cheaper, get updated and referencing is just as quick as warscroll cards.

That said I'd love their GW to just raise there app game a little and make it perfect.

So, which ones got updated? Because I’m not seeing it :(
