Tupavko's Madness - Road to Armies on Parade

So some of you might already know me from other forums, or facebook, or real life, or even yutube  but for those who don't I'm a big Chaos fan, especially Beastmen fan, with some sculpting and paiting skills.

After the Old World imploded I had a hard time finding an idea for a themed army in Age of Sigmar, so i waited then a few weeks ago finally I manged to find an idea, that I intend to take to the Armies on Parade, if I can!

Usually I'm fast at converting/sculpting, and I can paint fast too, but I'm horribly lazy and get distracted quite easely so I might never finish this project although I really fell in love with the idea of it, so if you see stuff that doesn't have anything to do with the project don't worry it's normal.

So long story short, let's get to business...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BACKGROUND

Ramush was certain “This must be it! This is the place!”

He’s been into the arcane arts for long enough to feel even the slightest vibrancy of magic in the air, yet even the youngest of apprentices could perceive that everything around him was overwhelmed with magical energy, but even though he had decades of experience he had no clue on why and what the source of it could possibly be.

With a slight head gesture he gave the order to Haethor, commander of the Twilight Templars escorting him.

“Secure the area!” yelled the commander, while Ramush stared in the dark examining the glade surrounding him, looking for answers, but nothing was out of place, yet that awkward feeling on the back of his neck, he knew something was not right! After all it wasn’t that long ago that Nurgle’s hordes invaded Ghyran. Eventually the Chaotic invaders were pushed out, yet as much as the Everqueen ruled undisputed and worked hard to reestablish the natural cycle of life, many dark places still where out of her control. Many dark corners remained in the Jade Realm.

“My Lord, should we proceed? We don’t have that much time before night falls!” asked Haethor.

“Have you checked everywhere?” replied Ramush

Yes my Lord! There’s nothing here we’re surrounded by trees, rocks and that old dead oak over there!

“Why the shivers then?” though Ramush. He started to lose his patience, but all of a sudden he turned towards the towering figure in the golden armor,

“What did you just say?

“Nothing my Lord!”

“Yes, the oak! It must be the oak! I can’t remember precisely now but back in Azyrheim I’ve read about the Aelves worshipping a tree back in the old ages! It must be that old tree over there!” he exclaimed with excitement and a fair dose of satisfaction.

Ramush quickly approached the dead tree, not much remained of the imposing colossus it must have been many centuries ago. A carbonized stub, tall as an average man, split in half as if it has been struck by a thunder, yet its radius was impressive, over ten stormcasts were needed to encircle it, maybe even more, each root thick as a man’s bust.

“If ever anyone worshipped a tree, this was definitely a good candidate” observed ironically Haethor.

The old wizard ignored his commander, too absorbed into studying the ancient tree, looking for answers for the arcane disturbance.

All of a sudden his thoughts were interrupted by a dire sound he had herd before: a Breyherd horn! It was an ambush. The silent forest around them started to move, the sound of hooves walking on branches and fallen leaves was more and more persistent, and screams of all sorts filled the air around the glade, until several mutated creatures where upon them!

The stormcasts formed a circle, shoulder to shoulder they encircled Ramush still standing on the remains of the old tree, forming a formidable wall ready to resist to the impact of the deformed children of Chaos. Dozens of creatures fell upon the shield wall of the gold-plated paladins, their hammers swinging around braking bones, yet no matter how many they killed more and more of those creatures kept coming from the darkness of the woods.

All off a sudden from his standing point, Ramush had a glimpse of what he realized must be the leader of these disgusting creatures: a cloacked figure, speaking dark words that his kin obeyed blindly. A “A shaman” he yelled, “a prophet of the Dark Gods!” The old wizard knew if he could slay the grotesque being, the beastmen following him will lose their momentum, and they will break returning to the darkness that vomited them in the first place. His opponent was not a fool either, it might have a brutal nature, but he compensated it through human malice and beastly cunning, and so a duel at a distance begun.

Ramush took a deep breath, and then pronounced arcane formulas while the air started crackling around him and small sparkles of electricity surrounded him. On the other side of the carnage, the horned one yelled unpronounceable words in the dark tongue, as his dire chant reached the climax a burst of violet fire flew towards the human wizard. However as soon as Ramush pronounced the last word of his spell, he pointed a finger toward his enemy and a thunder flew across the air intercepting the iridescent fire. At first there was just a flare then, an explosion that threw to the ground many of the beastmen and even the stormcasts staggered, but then the lightening continued its mortal path and hit the breyherd leader, leaving nothing else but a pile of ash!

The old wizard was exalted, ones again he proved to be a true master of arcane arts, but in less than a second, the joy turned into terror. The magic flux, that allowed Ramush to win the duel, was not in his control anymore. He could not stop, yet he felt more and more magic feeling his body, reaching his own mind! Then all of a sudden, a massive blast out of Ramush’s head froze all of those surrounding him, they could do nothing but watch with amazement and fear, as a greenish wortex opened from the mages head and a malevolent essence came in the world.

With horn and hoof, the twisted creature burst into the world, and as soon as it appeared the very rules of the material universe rebelled: tries contorted themselves into grotesque grimaces, their branches turned into clawed limbs grasping everything around. The beastmen fell to the ground in a horrifying mystical ecstasy, while their bodies started to mutate, their horns multiplied, gaping mouths opened on their bellies, their eyes filled with apocalyptic visions. The proud stormcasts screamed while their bodies and flesh melted with their armor, their arms turning into claws and tentacles, their minds obliterated, the most unfortunate ones fused forever in an ironical embrace with their beastly enemies.

Far away from their Alarielle the Everqueen opened her eyes! She had no doubt

“Cyanathair is back”, once again she was tormented by the same ancient evil, its immortal essence unbound that no physical form can contain.

Once again Morghur the Shadowgave walked the earth…

DESCRIPTION:

So my idea is to use the Arcanites army list to build a chaos spawn kind of themed army around the figure of Morghur. I've always been in love with his fluff, and after Total War took im back I got this urge to make an army all around him

I'll be using the rules for Ogroid Taumathurge for Morghur (with Boundless Mutations and Daemon Hearth  obviously both for fluff reasons), human sized spawns will be tzaangors, flying ones will be the Enlightened and Skyfires and so on... well you'll see.

At the moment my goal is a 1500pts army with a 24x24 board for Armies on parade the 28th of October.

Well at this point the only thing that is missing is a picture to start this plog so here it is (pics follow)

CONCEPT: basically what I wanted is to block the exact frame when Morghur comes to the mortal worl, brtsting trough the wizard's head, while things shapeshift around him, so yo can see a poor free people militia guy turning into Morghur's hoof and knee, while the stormcast is beeing pulled apart by the vortex.

NB - This is personal work, I do NOT sculpt or paint on commission, nor I have the ambition to work in this industry. It's just my hobby, however if you have any questions about scultping or paiting techniques (noobies or advanced) I'll be really happy to answer and help. in the last few months I made some tutorials on youtube, but again I have NO intention on becoming a youtuber, nor I ask money, so if that interests you I'll eventually keep updating those. If you are interested to have a look just search Tupavko's madness both on FB or Youtube (if the admins find it interesting feel free to include the video tutorials wherever you want on the site, without asking)

Well now, thats simply amazing, loved your previous work and this is one of my favourites from your sculpts. Im doing something similar with a monstrous army and have a kitbashed Morghur, but mine pales in comparison. Had a similar idea for the Base but still toying around.

Ill be watching with anticipation.

Thank you all guys!

A little update: I'm working on my first 10 Tzaangors: they are going to be human sized spawns made mainly out of beastmen and stormcasts, at least in terms of race, while I'm building them out of a huge variety of bitz:

gor, ungor, stormcasts, bretonnian peasants, skaven, genestealers, hormagaunts, river trolls, forsaken, zombies, ghouls, vargheists, blightkings and so on...

I'm trying to make them as unique as possible, so I'm trying not to use the same bitz ever, or if I do I tend to use it for in a differnt manner. One thing I discovered is that the backs of Crypt Horrors are perfect for these little abominations.

Another thing to keep in mind is the fact that tzaangor have different weapon options and a command group, so I decided that my spawns will have te same, but ina slightly different way:

- the bannerman is the tree guy, while the musician is the one with the gaping maw that has a small bell on one of the tentacles, I can't imagine a spwn playing anything more complex, and the leader is the three headed gor on the left with the huge claw.

In the same way i differentiated the weapons trough mutations: the guys still wearing armor (usually stormcast one) will count as tzaangors with shields, while those with a huge hand/claw are those with the Greatblade. The remaining ones with are mutants (well they all are, but that's how they are called) with 2 savage blades.

Since I'm building a unit of 20, I'll need 8 Greatfist ones, 8 armored ones, and 4 mutants... 5 ready 15 to go!

Ok guy so a little update on this project:

I'm finishing  to paint 5 more little spawns (tzaangors) as I write this, so soon I'll post pics of the first unit of 10, but for the moment my test on these 5 models satisfies me a lot . I also sculpted, well kitbashed mostly the remaining 10 tzaangors and they arre ready for paiting too.

I managed to assemble those that will become my Tzaangor Enlgihtened on Discs, and today I'm gonna a grab a box of Sylvanateh dryads to build my pink horrors...

For the bases as you can see I decided to keep the dark swampy/foresty look I have on my all other beastmen, but I desided to add a bit of that "magical" element with the purple and green warpstone chunks around and "glowing" green water.

and Morghur with his minions:

Ok so here is the remaining part of the unit, now you can see the champion, the bannerman and the musician as well as the 3 different types of weapons: the one with stormcast armor is a tzaangor with shield, the one with the big arm is a tzaangor with a great weapon and the remaining ones are basically mutants.

Some of the coolest minis I've seen when it comes to "chaotic mutations". The one on the right reminds me of the guy loosing his spine here:

(btw, the 6th edition beastmen book truly has the most creepy and unsettling warhammer artwork ever. So good :) ).

I've seen your work over at warseer and FB and it's nothing but next level.  That Morghur sculpture really displays how skillful you are. That's a very complex work with brilliant flow and dynamics. Great paintjob too that almost looks like an illustration, especially on the bottom left pic of him. Love all the green tints! Will definitely follow this project!

Damn, now I need to sculpt some more! :)

So awsome!! How do you make such amazing things with greenstuff? When i try to use it, it always seems either to sticky and soft or too hard and unmoldable...

I've been sculpting for quite some time now, 10years aprox, so I have a lot of confidence with the greenstuff. But trust me at the beginning for it was the same. My first suggestion is that you start with small things, some fur, some hair, small simple details, so that you have a solid support, and get some feeling with the material.

You can find some of my tutorials here for beginners, one is in italian but a the other two are in english. I'll make some more of these soon!

That illustration was my mane inspiration for the whole army.

Actually I wanted a AoS pure army, I've been collecting beastmen since ever, but I don't feel they are perfectly fitted for AoS. So since Total War realesed Morghur as legendary hero for the beastmen, I just felt I had to play him somehow in AoS. Morghur's been my favorite vilain, so wheen the Disciples of Tzeeentch came out I thought it would be a great idea to play him as Ogroid, so i took my 6th edition Beastmen book, the best book ever made by GW according to me, because of that dark mittel-european feeling, like a Grimm Brothers fairy tale.

I will! :D

Amazing work. It's nice to see Morghur has re emerged as he always does to spread yet more corruption.

I hope GW thinks the same and eventually they remake him as a huge monster lord for Breyherds, we need a ig bad, mean guy! :D Besides he is the only one that could survive the End Times since he has no material form!

Thank you! If you all areinterested I can explain the passages on my models, and how I do things, but I'm not sure if people are interested in reading that kind of stuff!

I would love to know more about the process. Everything from the armature and up would be awesome to read about actually. :)

I'll try to post more "work in progress" pics, both sin terms of paiting/kitbashin as well as paiting.

So today just a little update. After I comleted my first 10 tzaangors/morghur's kin, I managed to kitbash 10 more models, but I have to finish grees stuffing them,. Since 20 models of the same type are far too many for me, i decided to take a break and make something else, and that's how these guys were born, which by the way will be used as my Enlightened. I'll make other 3 flying spawns for the Skyfires.

I'm still working on them, you can see the third guy on the right is still just kitbashed and he's missing completely all the sculpting but I'll do that soon.

Kf43eGb.jpg?1

In the meanwhile I started assembling 20 pink horrors, based mostly on Sylvanaeth dryads... there's still a lot to do!

So you're this talented at sculpting and bilingual? That's a bit greedy :P

In all seriousness it's a shame you have no interest in going pro, because I'm sure any Kickstarter you ran would be fully backed in a matter of seconds. Your work isn't just technically good, each model has a genuine sense of narrative.

A very quock update on several things going on:

So the paiting of the enlightened is going well here is a picture of them at a very early stage, at this moment I finished the skin so soon I'll post some new pics, but I hope I'll finish them by tomorrow.

nuxo9Rs.jpg?1

In meanwhile I started and almost completed building some kitbashed bases for some sculpting of the remaining models, such as the pink horrors that are going to be a mix between ungor, man and dryads, but with a personal twist, you'll see ehen we get to the green stuff, here is the very beginning. I build 20 of these guys so it's gonna be a lot of scultping:

LFXtRu4.jpg?2

I also started the "Morghur's finest" :D , his personal bodyguard, made obviously out of Chaos Spawns, but with a trully gor-ish feeling:

LAulgTb.jpg?1

And some more tzaangors. These 5 guys are entirely made of Stromcasts, and I'll be using them ad tzaangors with shields:

zp4Fpfl.jpg?1

So things are going wwell for the moment. At this rate I dont' think I'll be able to complete everything by the end of october, but a store I go to often, organizes a sort of Armies on parade a month later so if I miss the original one, I'll go to the "unofficial" one.

You don't actually need a "legal" army, just a good dose of models and a board :)

These are all amazing! Im starting to organize a aos version of Pilgrym ( completly converted warbands with a whole load of narrative hopefully fighting it out in a multiplayer game) and thought this would be amazing as a warband. It would be great if you were interested.:D  This is amazing (especcially Morgurh) and I hope to see the finished army soon!
