  1. 3 mages + general + battalion seems a bit overkill in 1k. 570pts in just characters lacks flexibility and you may struggle holding objectives. Greatswords are solid blenders especially with the recent points drop. Helstorm arent great on their own but they can do well if you have a bunch with buffs. I'd probably drop a mage and the battalion. Then maybe add a unit of handgunners and another 10 greatswords. Alternatively if you want to keep most of the magic I'd consider Sisters of the Thorn or a Knight Incantor. Still wizards but these have a bit more utility.
  2. Sidenote (and not sure if this is allowed) but I'm selling a boxed unbuilt metal Sisters of Twilight set atm. DM for details.
  3. Ah gotcha, yeah I was just using the points from the wrscroll builder. Looks like it might be difficult to lean into both the battalion and morathi angle effectively in 2k.
  4. EDIT: OOPS USED OLD POINTS VALUES! please ignore this one but can't wait to get the dark elves out! Rules only taken from a bunch of youtube videos I've seen, but to kick off the list building: Cities of Sigmar: Har Kuron Sorceress on Black Dragon - 300 Morathi - 480 10 Dreadspears - 90 30 Darkshards - 300 20 Blackguard - 260 30 Witch Aelves - 300 10 Shadow warriors - 110 Battalion: Kraith Shadow Host - 160 Total: 2000 Uses the new battalion to pump up the darkshard output, decent magic, DoK Morathi + witch elves, dreadspear screen/sacrifice, blackguard for reliable bodies not sure how priest version of morathi works with CoS generals adjutant and retinue rules
  5. Hi all! Been about a month or so, so time for a quick update. Hobby has been progressing quite nicely on all fronts. Finished off the hurricanum, invested in some contrast paints and vallejo basing paste (huge fan), and binge-watched tons of youtube painting videos. Also had a bit of a change of heart with the list and so I'm now going for an elf-centric Tempest Eye build. Hurricanum: Overall pretty pleased with this. Easily the most complex painting project I've taken on so far and I learnt a lot. Think the additional characters adds some nice narrative aspects and it was fun to bring some different armies into the mix. Hardest part had to be painting the interior and attaching the ogre to the carriage. I made the cables just by twisting up some electrical wire with a doorhandle and electric drill, but fixing them was pretty fiddly. Concussors (WIP): The concussors are bringing a much-needed stormcasty punch to the army. These guys are the first 'new' sculpts I've got my hands on since getting back into the hobby so I was very impressed with how much the minis had developed compared to the old freeguild models. The dracoths are great to paint also. This one's basically done, maybe another highlight on the cloak, then hoping to get the other finished in the next couple weeks. Sorceress (WIP): Another WIP. This hag queen is going to be my sorceress. Still not happy with the hair but i think the colour selection overall works well. All Together: Here I've got everything painted so far. Coming together quite well and I'm looking forward to hitting that 1k benchmark. Just need to beg/borrow/steal a better camera also. Future additions will include some handgunners, a dreadlord on black dragon, drakespawn knights (optimistic about these guys since the points drop), phoenix guard and some endrinriggers. Full List: Allegiance: Cities of Sigmar- City: Tempest's EyeMortal Realm: AqshyLeadersDreadlord on Black Dragon (300)- Exile Blade & ShieldCelestial Hurricanum with Celestial Battlemage (280)Sorceress (90)Battleline10 x Darkshards (100)10 x Freeguild Handgunners (100)Units30 x Phoenix Guard (420)10 x Drakespawn Knights (260)2 x Concussors (220)6 x Endrinriggers (200)Total: 1970 / 2000Extra Command Points: 0Allies: 0 / 400Wounds: 122 tbh not sure if I can bring myself to buy/paint 30 phoenix guard so this might turn into 10 evocators or 15 sequitors + lifeswarm. Could even be something new in the Morathi book!
  6. Does anyone have any experience of dark elves in TE? Been thinking about building a more melee-focused list and came up with this. All feedback welcome. Allegiance: Cities of Sigmar- City: Tempest's EyeMortal Realm: AqshyDreadlord on Black Dragon (300)- General- Lance of Spite & Shield- Command Trait: Swift as the Wind- Artefact: Incandescent RagebladeCelestial Hurricanum With Celestial Battlemage (280)- Lore of Eagles: Aura of GlorySorceress (90)- Lore of Eagles: Celestial VisionsKnight-Azyros (100)10 x Freeguild Handgunners (100)20 x Darkshards (200)20 x Executioners (240) 10 x Drakespawn Knights (260)2 x Concussors (220)6 x Endrinriggers (200)- 2x Grapnel LaunchersTotal: 1990 / 2000Extra Command Points: 0Allies: 0 / 400Wounds: 127 Coven infantry core for bodies and high mobility turn 1 threats. Darkshards provide ranged support and cp farming Dreadlord with swift and rageblade should make him really scary in combat. Drakespawn knights move with the hurricanum and dreadlord. Benefitting from his command ability and providing some survivable bodies. Executioners and concussors for speedy mortal wounds with azyros rerolls to increase 6s. Endrinriggers for high rend threats and flying charges Handgunners for battleline and to sit on home objectives Is this list competitive at all? Where would it struggle?
  7. Been about a month since the last update. My 1k army is coming together quite nicely. Finished off the darkshards and added snow basing to both units. Just got to work out some heraldry for banners and source a few more freeguild, then the battleline are good to go. I've also started thinking about how to bring it up to 2k. Current plan is 3 scourge runner chariots, knight incantor, beefing up the darkshards to 20, more dracoths, and a 30-man block of one of the elite infantry choices. Ideally I'd want 30 executioners/black guard as the models are sweet, but unfortunately they just can't compete with phoenix guard rules-wise. Darkshards finished. Went for a slightly different scheme than the guard with more red and gold for more of a 'professional soldier' look. A bunch of different angles for the carriage sub-assemblies. It was probably the most work I've done on a single miniature but it'll be a nice centrepiece when its done. Best bits were painting the planets and the burning torches at the back (first attempt at flames). Also need to try and work out how I'll attach the ogre at the front. Next update will probably be the sisters of the thorn which are in various build stages on my desk. Bonus: a converted a battlemage from the hurricanum set, using a freeguild head and an old dwarf miner backpack. Shame they got nerfed but will be a fun painting challenge.
  8. Personally I think a more diverse model range can only be a good thing. It'll mean more interesting models for painting and playing. A diverse group of writers can draw on a wider range of inspiration for lore and media. It makes the hobby more accessible and representative, and to be honest it just makes good business sense. The idea that people are equating requests for greater variety in a toy model range as 'dangerous leftist ideology' is frankly laughable.
  9. To take a break from painting my darkshards I've made a start on the celestial hurricanum. I think the model holds up very well considering its age, there's lots of great detail and bitz to keep hold of. It's also probably the most complex kit I've worked on so I thought I'd keep track of my progress. I've made a couple changes to fit with my army narrative which I think work pretty well. The main one is the replacement of the cart horses with a mutant ogre. Lore: One of the Caravan Company's early sponsors, ogre chieftain Thorag Goldtooth met an unfortunate fate following a disagreement with the troop's sorceress. His continued attempts to renegotiate the Darkling Coven contract was followed by a mysterious bout of warpstone poisoning lasting several months. Thorag's growing aggression and mutations were halted only with the help of a travelling runesmith who bound a dwarven seal into his chest. Though highly unpredictable Thorag remains a key part of the caravan, hauling the hurricanum through even the most treacherous of terrain. Front View. Minus basing and the sun cage. Side View 1. The fallen are sometimes collected to appease Thorag's voracious appetite, a topic of much controversy among the caravan guard. The attendant stands watch ready to give the ogre a sharp poke if he deviates from the course. I had another version using a polearm and meathook to steer the ogre but the positioning didn't really work. Rear View. Another skull pass alumni making an appearance. Side View 2. Thorag's trusty gnoblar. He's a useful lookout for the caravan and often sent out to pick the battlefield for scraps. Whether he stays for loyalty or just because he has nowhere else to go is uncertain. These pics are held together with blue tac but will be undercoated separately. Currently in 13 parts. Updates to follow.
  10. Time for the first blog update! Been pretty busy with real life stuff recently but still managed to get some hobby in. Really enjoyed painting to podcasts in the evenings. The last couple weeks I've completed my freeguild guard and built up the darkshards. Pretty rusty at painting so took a couple models to get back into it, though overall very pleased with how they turned out. Learnt a couple painting tips along the way too! Here's all 14, went for a blue and white colour scheme with purple and red highlights. Just got to try and wrangle another 6 from somewhere to bring it up to the full squad. Dwarves closeup. These were the first I finished and were stripped and rebased from my old fantasy army. Think they're looking good and especially pleased with the bases. Command squad. The kit bashing came out pretty well, particularly the masked drummer. Still got to work out a freehand design for with the banner, but got to practise a bit more before trying that. The rest of the boys. I feel the kit bashing really added some character; Lanky McDwarferson with the steam gun, pet rat guy, stump leg guy etc. (names tbc) Pre-undercoat darkshards. Pretty much straight out of the box. Added a couple arrow stands and backpacks here and there. Plus used greenstuff to add the freeguild captain greatsword to the unit champion. Definitely a bit out of practice with the green stuff as it was a bit messy sculpting (probably wasn't wet enough) but should look fine once its painted. Also added another small dagger to the bottom for some Darth Maul vibes. Finally my sorceress. Just a hag queen model I got off ebay atm but planning on attaching a sisters of the thorn staff for her other hand. Also considering greenstuffing some fabric for a dress to make it look a bit more battlemage than stripper-witch. Will see just have to see what I'm feeling when I've got the other kits. Next steps include painting up the darkshards and buying either the hurricanum (I have some conversion ideas) or the sisters/concussor
  11. Greetings TGA, So I've recently started getting back into Warhammer following a 8yr haitus. Back in the day I used to be a big fantasy player (dwarves, ogre kingdoms, orcs and goblins) and while I was initially a bit miffed on discovering the cataclysmic death of the old world, Age of Sigmar looks like a lot of fun. Plus the models are great. Having perused the different army tomes and dug out some my old bitz from the attic, I've decided that Cities of Sigmar is the one for me. I like the idea of ordinary humans sticking it to all the supernatural beasties and free cities have lots of narrative/lore potential. Plus the army book seems really versatile. I picked Hallowheart based on the competitive value and OP magic action. While I'm not primarily in it for the competition, I do enjoy a win now and again. This is the list I'm thinking for a 1000pt starter: Allegiance: Cities of Sigmar- City: HallowheartMortal Realm: AqshyLeadersSorceress (90)- General- Command Trait: Veteran of the Blazing Crusade- Lore of Whitefire: Ignite Weapons- Hallowheart 2nd Spell: Roaming WildfireCelestial Hurricanum With Celestial Battlemage (280)- Artefact: Agloraxi Prism- Lore of Whitefire: Sear Wounds- Hallowheart 2nd Spell: Warding BrandBattleline20 x Freeguild Guard (160)- Swords and Shields10 x Darkshards (100)- City Role: Honoured Retinue (Must be 5-20 models)Units5 x Sisters of the Thorn (130)- Lore of Whitefire: Elemental Cyclone- Hallowheart 2nd Spell: Ignite Weapons2 x Concussors (240)Total: 1000 / 1000Extra Command Points: 0Allies: 0 / 200Wounds: 66 Hopefully reasonably competitive. 3 spellcasters, big blob of freeguild, 2 cavalry units for mobility, concussors as my hammer, darkshards for short-range support and objectives. Theme-wise I'm going try and build them like a research caravan company. A bunch of magical experts have been sent out on an expedition to find hidden artefacts etc. Got to work on the narrative stuff but I've got a bit of representation from all the different races and I'm repainting some old dwarves for my freeguild guard too. Stormcast have been sent along to make sure the dark elves don't get up to anything backstabby. So far I've got my hands on the freeguild and darkshards kits. Going to use them to work on conversion skills and get a colour scheme sorted etc. I'm planning on kitbashing in most units with all my old fantasy stuff. Then for basing it'll probably be rocky/snow themed. Freeguild guard for undercoating. Got a couple head swaps in there, plus steam drill, pet rat, wooden leg and a raven. Dwarf mercenaries for inclusion in my guard unit. Got a nice OG skull pass warrior in there for the nostalgia. The old Shield-Sprayer 9000. I really like the battered bretonian one not sure where it's from, might be the giant or maybe an ogre set. Anyway, my next steps are to undercoat and start painting these up, get started on the darkshards, and then I'll see what everything looks like from there.
  12. Looking great, congrats! Just a quick question for you. Which parts did you paint separately and then assemble post-painting? About to start building one myself and just wondering about the practicalities of getting to all those hard to reach areas.
  13. Thanks for such an indepth response. Lots of good options to think about. Definitely going to sub out the liberators for 20 freeguild guard for the cheaper points and synergy I think. Then maybe also cut the crossbows for more darkriders plus a battlemage with 50pt spare for an endless spell. So much variety with CoS. Also not really thought amount monetary cost too much yet so thats definitely a concern haha.
  14. Hi Everyone, I'm hoping to pick up warhammer again after 7 years. I used to have a pretty good amount of fantasy and played a lot (2500pt dwarves, 1500pt orcs & goblins + some ogre kingdoms). I've been reading up about AoS and it looks really fun, love the models. I'm thinking 1000pts of Cities of Sigmar to start. Always wanted to get some empire and I like the large variety of units. I've got a preliminary list and was wondering if I could get some feedback before I invest in buying things. Doesn't need to be super competitive but I'd like to be able to win my fair share of games if possible. Allegiance: Cities of Sigmar- City: HammerhalLeadersFreeguild General (100)- General- Command Trait: Blood of the Twelve- Artefact: The TwinstoneBattleline20 x Freeguild Handgunners (200)20 x Freeguild Crossbowmen (200)3 x Demigryph Knights (180)- Lance and Sword10 x Liberators (200)- Warhammer & Shield- 2x Grandhammers- City Role: Honoured Retinue (Must be 5-20 models)Units5 x Dark Riders (110)Total: 990 / 2000Extra Command Points: 0Allies: 0 / 400Wounds: 87 The idea is 2 big units of missile infantry to shoot with Hold The Line. Then 2 cav units: demigryphs w/lances for killing any tough cookies, then dark riders for objectives, harassing and weak enemies (plus the models are cool). All held together with the liberators plus my free guild general. A couple questions: 1) At the moment I'm not sure between 20 crossbows and 20 handgunners or 2x20 crossbows. I like the idea of the 80 shot 3+ 2+ using the command ability. However not sure if it's a bit overkill / would leave me struggling against armoured units? Plus handgunners get the stand and shoot, how useful is this? 2) Other options for the liberators? I've been reading and although I like the models people seem to ****** on them in forums. I know sequitors/evocators seem better but I can't fit them in the points cost. I'd quite like having some 'elite' infantry to be able to hold the fort and centre everything. Greatswords seem a bit squishy in comparison, not sure yet. 3) No magic? I think the general is better overall for his Hold the Line ability and killing power. But wondering what people think. How big is magic in AoS? Any other general advice for a AoS newby would be great. Looking forward to painting up some models and getting engaged with the community!
