  1. Not a DoK player so take this with a grain of salt but looking from outside the faction Hag Queens are way too undercosted for what they provide, a fact proven by how much of the feedback on here is "You need more Hag Queens" even when people already have two. How many other heroes (let alone buffing heroes) in the game are in the same situation? I think just by changing them around a bit (maybe not even pointwise but by putting some kind of limit on the number of times they can use their abilities?) I think DoK will be in a pretty balanced place. DoK relies heavily on synergy so I'm hoping that whilst GW lowers they're power level slightly (I personally think they are a bit too strong on a casual player level making them a bit unfun to play against with some armies) they do so by carefully looking at the synergies and putting greater opportunity costs in them than by simply increasing points on a blanket level.
  2. As someone looking to include some Duardin in a Living City I have coming up this thread is incredibly inspiring. Your paint skills are absolutely amazing and I love green you've gone for. Can't wait to see how the army develops further.
  3. You're rounding up to get the number of models that flee, not the ones that don't. This means that you would lose the 1 Warrior in this case.
  4. Thinking of picking up Beasts of Chaos as a 1000pt side army sometime soon and wanted to focus on the beast side of things. What do you all think of the following list? Greatfray: Allherd Leaders Great Bray Shaman 100pts - General (Dominator) - Spell: Savage Dominion Beastlord 90pts - Blade of the Descrator Battleline 20 Ungors 120pts - Blades and Half-Shields 30 Gors 210pts - Blades and Shields 10 Bestigors Units Cockatrice 100pts Ghorgon 200pts 940pts (1 extra command point) The idea is somewhat simple and revolves around having a large core of Goes (the quintessential Beastman models in my mind so I wanna keep them) with a small unit of ambushing Bestigor to take on elite things. The Beastlord would either run up with the Gors or ambush with the Bestigors and be somewhat flexible with the Allherd artefact letting him take on heroes or add some extra hitting power to the bestigors for larger units. The Bray Shaman and Ungors would sit back around the Herdstone and in combination with the extra command point and Allherd command ability guarantee a Chimera on turn 3 (1 per turn X 3 + minimum 1 per turn sacrifice X 3 + 4 command point) which would join the battle where needed. I chose Savage Dominion spell for the theme but also for the range letting the Shaman sit back and still contribute. The Ghorgon and Cockatrice are mostly for theme but I think both act as somewhat scary things with the Cockatrice potentially be a support hero sniper with its mortal wound gaze.
  5. Not too keen on it to be fair. The Longstrikes in particular stand out as a bit of a weird choice at 180pts. They were only good at sniping things and I'd argue that for an extra 20pts Kurnoth Hunters will do better with their higher damage and extra wounds (though no mortals). The Incantor also seems a weird choice given the access to wizards that Slyvaneth have. You're playing 60pts over say another Branchwraith that would give reduncy on her spell as well as being able to take another Slyvaneth spell (Incantor spell isn't that great) in return for some ok mortal wound output and an auto dispell. Given how tight on points you are if you really want the auto dispell I'd be tempted to take the Spellweaver instead. The Phoenix is alright though not entirely sure what it's doing in the list besides adding another hard to kill guy but it goes with the theme and you have the magic so go for it. The main thing however is you're just not making the most out of your battalion despite paying 230pts for it. 10 model Dryads do very little for their cost (they need that +1 save I find) and even if all 10 get to fight on average you're getting 3.5 extra attacks which translate to less than one extra wound before saves. If you wanna go Winterleaf I really feel like you need to go all in on the Dryads with at least two large blobs. Otherwise just run something like Gnarlroot with the Phoenix so you have more than enough spells to get the most out of its save whilst having more useful overall abilities and less dead weight.
  6. I can understand how your group might reach that conclusion but personally I think you pick allegiance before you make the list. Otherwise your list will be illegal and not able to move onto step 2 in the case of conditional battleline. Based on this you can chose GA allegiance and then build a list using only one factions units but not gain access to the stuff that makes that faction unique. That said, given how vague it is and how rarely this comes up I think you could see either way as correct until specified by GW.
  7. As far as I'm aware if you can take a specific ability you're not forced to. However, you lose access to faction specific batteline, artefacts and spells. For example if you're using Judicator battleline you'd have to take the Stormcast abilities otherwise you'd no longer count as a Stormcast army for conditional battleline. However, a 2000pt Stormcast army could take the Order abilities (and any cities) however they'd be limited to Liberators for battleline, only be able to use generic artefacts and warlord traits, and any wizards would only have access to generic spells and the one on their warscroll. Factions like Order Draconis only have the Order abilities available to them however and as such are allowed to take them even when benefiting from conditional battleline. Since the only condition for cities is that you are an order army using only models from certain factions, you'd thus be able to take Hallowheart abilities. The only downside is that you'd only be allowed to take allies that Order Draconis can normally take that are also part of the Hallowheart faction. Like you say, it's needlessly complicated and I hope they make a real battletome for Free Cities one day that simplifies it.
  8. I believe that list would be illegal as you'd have one too many heroes (6 in the battalion and then the Runeson). Also, whilst I don't know much about Fyreslayers I thought they were generally a go big or go home on their troops to get the ward save. Are they any good without that save?
  9. Thanks for the help sounds like I overestimated the acolytes even with the bonus shooting a bit. I quite like the look of your list PlayerofGames. Keeps to the theme I wanted to go for without sacrificing power or flexibility. The fact that it's mostly in a box set only makes it better! Regarding the loss of the battalion, what artefact would you take then? I was thinking before I could give them both something but now id be down to one it's important to make sure the choice is right. Looking through the Tzeentch ones nothing stands out to me too much which I guess is just because of a lack of experience with the army.
  10. So I've been thinking of which army to start next and since I wanted to keep them in line with the fluff of my other army (to act as the rivals in that story), I've narrowed it down to Nighthaunt or Tzeentch. As such, I'd like some advice on the kind of 1000pt list I'd like to play to see if it's viable to play Tzeentch in the way I want. The backstory is that they are from the realm of Shyish in an area near a giant forest brought to life by life magics pouring in through a realm gate. The surrounding lands were reliant on the food provided by the forest giving it immense power over them. Eventually, resentment towards them gave birth to a Arcanist Cult that revealed themselves during the Age of Chaos. Their one goal is to burn down to the forest and all those that dwell within. They thus see warpfire as the purest of Tzeentch's gifts and venorate the Tzaangors born from its mutating magics as the true children of Tzeentch. For this reason I want to try and build the army around the Wychfire Coven battalion with a heavy amount of Arcanites with a few elite Tzaangors. Heroes Tzaangor Shaman - 180pts (General) Ogroid Thaumaturge - 180pts (for the fire theme) Battleline 20 Kairic Acolytes - 160pts (not sure on weapon make up) 20 Kairic Acolytes - 160pts Units 3 Tzaangor Enlightened on Discs - 160pts Wychfire Coven - 120pts 40pts spare for spells I feel that the list is somewhat balanced for 1000pts and the shooting should help a lot. The Ogroid will run with the Arcanites to grant them the hit bonus whilst the Shaman will work with the Enlightened as a roaming kill squad. I'm not sure on command traits/artefacts/spells but I kind of like the theming of Firestorm for the Shaman even if the spell is hard to cast. For summing I'd like go for small Blue Horror units to match the fire theme (also I like the idea that this isn't a greatly powerful coven but rather one small fighting force so I'd like to avoid big daemons) that would work as deepstriking objective cappers but as such I'm not too worried about getting tons of spells off for summoning. Please give me advice and or let me know how to improve the list
  11. Given the magical aspect to this one I can see most of the warbands having some magic option. This makes things like (non-Khorne) Daemons, Slyvaneth, Deepkin and Bonesplitterz potential candidates in my mind. Depending on how far out they are willing to go they could also do an interesting Collegiate Arcane or Eldritch Council warband though they are very unlikely. I think things like Overlords may have to wait until season 3 unfortunately as unless they give them dispellers or something they won't really add much to the game that couldn't have been done in season 1. For the same reason I'm not convinced DoK will make it as they only have one wizard option (though a warband of a Medusa and ~2 melusai would be awesome).
  12. Don't wanna bring the mood down too much but my wife got rushed into hospital this Tuesday and I've been really trying to find distractions. Came across this podcast and binge listened up to the latest episode. The humour and friendly attitude has been just what I need to take my mind off my worries and has even managed to bring my depressed self to laugh out loud multiple times per episode. Can't wait for episode 8 and whatever your next army focus is.
  13. I live in Japan which has a major issue with only Stormcast and Nighthaunt armies having translated rules this far. As such, people normally just make armies of what they think are cool and just read through the rules when they can (sometimes they even read the rules for the first time mid game!). Some of the people who understand English better have slightly stronger armies but it still leans to cool > rules. As for the actual armies, it's a lot of daemons as many people want to play the more popular 40k as well since models are so expensive here (two Daemon khorne armies and one Nurgle in a group of about 8 people). It's not a normal meta but at the same time I don't think your average casual metas will be that different outside of people knowing their armies a bit better.
  14. Both King and Volturnos are good so go with what you want. I agree that I'm not actually too keen on the Volturnos model so I simply replaces his head with one of the regular ones (requires a bit of cutting to get it to fit well) and then not putting the banner behind him (doesn't really fit with the helmet crest). I've found its a nice midpoint that lets me use the model as both. As for the list, I'm personally aiming for a very similar list except I'm also taking a Kharibdyss for rule of cool (planning on using the Merwyrm model as it's awesome and in theme and the only set of rules I could find that would work well with the model). Really I think Idoneth armies are pretty dependent on your local meta. In a casual meta like mine the two Allopexes and a Leviadon would work perfectly fine but in a more competitive scene you'll likely be told to drop both and just take more eels. Personally I find the latter makes for a pretty boring army no matter how strong it is so go with what you want I really don't think anything in Idoneth is terrible, it's just not particularly well balanced internally with a heavy skew towards eels for competitive play. Also, if you're like me and can't afford to change armies up on the fly, I'd advise going too heavily with eels. The way competitive lists are effectively "take all the eels!" I predict at least minor point increases on them in the next GHB (I know it's a while away but for people like me it can take almost a year just to get an army together considering I also play Slyvaneth).
  15. Regarding the fluff behind the new Beatified despoilers ability, I think >10 is supposed to represent them attacked a regimented unit that fights in an orderly fashion hence their dislike of such units (ironic since they'll get the bonus against over bestigor units but oh well)
  16. Just like to point out that this is completely true for the Plague Sworn Warband too. The only thing stopping you is that they don't fit into a 2000pt game most people seem to be thinking about. Rhu's answer could be true regardless of how practical it is in real life to use. For now I think it's best that people don't get too excited and wait and see the actual wording. Thankfully there isn't much time left now
  17. I dont believe anything is stopping you from taking the battalion but it does leave you very little in the way of flexibility and whilst you have a lot of Duardin, having them separated into so many small units might be a problem with buffing. Additionally the bonus to battleshock tests doesn't matter too much with small units as they will likely be wiped entirely or not have to worry about the tests in the first place. For that reason if you really want to stick with them I'd be tempted to spend your remaining points on bulking out a unit of Warriors or Longbeards to act as a anvil and buff target. Also, I feel like you'd be better off with Kurnoth Hunters with scythes than bows. The bows aren't amazing with the new Look out sir and I feel you already have some ranged presence. Scythes would give you some hard hitters your list doesn't really have and be durable enough to tie up enemy monsters. Please let me know how it goes though, as someone currently making my Living City atm I'm interested to see how people find certain units. Also, because I promise pictures ages ago and never got round to it, here is my army so far;
  18. I mean on a personal level the only interest I have in Moonclan is to help balance our the overall rosters and to give Destruction players some much needed love. I've never been interested in the Orc and Goblins of Warhammer (squigs are alright but unless they evolve them more I can't help but see the variants are just different sizes of the same thing). In contract Slaanesh was my first army and I ended up selling it due to weak rules (7th edition 40k), old models and lack of variety so I'd love a revamp of the range. As for the overall rumours I'm kind of disappointed but I think that mostly stems from most of the relevant reveals being for side games. Like I love the new Underworld models but at the end of the day they don't change anything about AoS apart from giving some people some cool unique sculpts (and unfortunately not for armies I collect yet which I get is a bit selfish). The Beasts of Chaos book gets me more hyped even though it's using old models just because it's more to think about and adapt to. It's affects all players regardless of their armies because now there is a chance that you will come up against them more often. Underworlds stuff only affects Underworld players and the people that collect their armies (and thus far only of the three new warbands two have only just finished getting a whole bunch of new models).
  19. Hoping for a Slyvaneth/Idoneth warband this time round. Would love for some unique sculpts that I can really go all out with to practice my painting.
  20. Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like I was on the right track with the Runelord. I'll have a think more about what to do with the big unit. I realised I could drop one unit of Eternal Guard and Warriors as well as change a hero choice and have enough spare points to take the Longbeards up to 30 models. Kind of tempted to just from the point of increasing the Dispossed presence in the army (didn't realise they took up so few points ><).
  21. Thanks for the response I think I get what you mean. Sounds like they aren't so different that I can use them fine (contingent on my opponent agreeing of course). In addition I was wondering what people thought about a good small contingent of Dispossessed. My goal for them is to act as a mini anvil supported by Glade Guard/Dryads, deepstriking Eternal Guard (objective/forest campers), and then some faster moving/harder hitting Stormcast and a Stormcast Ballista. Unfortunately, due to points for everything else I'm looking at only 280pts of Dispossed without major changes to the rest of my list. For thematic purposes I want to take at least one hero and Im leaning toward the Runelord for the potential to make them tougher to remove as well as -2 rend when needed. That leaves 180pts for a battleline choice and right now I'm planning on 10 Warriors and 10 Longbeards. However I'm worried that having two small units would dilute the Runelords ability and ultimately be a poor decision. My alternatives are to either go with 20 Warriors, using the spare 20pts either elsewhere or to swap the Runelord with a King, or to try and find 20pts from elsewhere to get 20 Longbeards and a Runelord. Any advice would be much appreciated as I've never seen Dispossessed in action before.
  22. Love this army! So original and the lore really ties it together well. As for the bear, I think maybe the issue with the upper lip is that it is roaring and snarling and yet the hair is just hanging down. The upper lip would probably be flared more if it was roaring like that.
  23. Amazing army. Really making me want to start something similar but I have enough on my plate for now. Will have to come back here for inspiration if I ever decide to make a winter themed army however.
  24. So I'm planning on adding some Dispossessed to a Living City army I have planned and I noticed that the Dwarf Rangers from the rereleased LotR range suit the theme a lot better than the normal range (love the normal range but they don't exactly scream "sneaky ambusher'"). Does anyone here know the size comparisons of the models? I know LotR is in a different scale so if they're too different then I'll probably have to pass but it would be a shame given how great those models look.
  25. When I moved to Japan I shipped my Ad Mech and Slyvaneth (both fiddly armies) using the official GW carry cases and they were perfectly fine. I had to cut out a few lines in the foam though and do things like lie the Treelord Ancient down (be very careful taking him out.) I then cut the sections I'd taken out into smaller bits to fit any parts where there were large gaps that might allow models to move. Admittedly I really packed them into two cases so it was pretty hard to prevent movement. That said I'm not sure it's the best strategy and I have had problems in the past with the carry cases (my Treelord Ancients staff tentacles and horn have both snapped before when I wasn't careful taking it out) so if anyone has a better idea of definitely consider that instead.
