  1. What if battalions required more units and incentivised this with buffs? There's a line to be walked here between being too restrictive (eg. Must take exactly 2 units of X) and too open ended (eg. Must take up to 5 units of X, Y or Z.) For this to work, GW would need to actually prioritize balance, but it could mitigate the scenario where X is objectively better than Y in all scenarios. And yes, I agree with the general thread here that diverse model armies should be promoted more.
  2. Love em! Will u make a proper cavern/hold to clean house of skaven/baddies? Seems like a legit way to play some atmospheric skirmish games!
  3. Thanks! I used black, a dark turquoise and white for it, but went with glazing and then some brush strokes of thicker paint at the end. I would probably need to get better at precision with drybrush to use it here, there's some crazy effects out there that people get with stippling... Haha maybe something to try down the road!
  4. Agree with @Overread and @JackStreicher; I would like the khinerai to become more elite - better save or better damage or both. I don’t want them to drop in points or get smaller bases because we already have so many light infantry options, plus I dont want to paint even more of them. But you know what would sweeter? A khinerai general mmmmmm Now that I’m in full on wishlisting mode... Give us one more kit for variety. Cavary would be wonderful - eg. improved warlock sculpts. @Ravenborn once commented on the current doomfire warlock hands looking palsied, and I have to agree they are distractingly hueg.
  5. Working out my Melusai scheme, pretty stoked with the general direction so far. Gold and leather!
  6. Thanks! I have used a few different recipes, but my current recipe is pretty quick and dirty: Prime vallejo black (I think priming maroon would also work really well) Airbrush a mix of GW Flayed one flesh and WN titanium white, but keep a gradient for shadows, which get less of the mix and stay darker. This part is tricky for me, I have to thin the mix well and practice to avoid speckling. Add more Titanium white, maybe some GW Pallid Wych to the mixture from 2, and add brighter lights from a few directions I generally try to place 2 main light sources for step 2 and 3, which means more of the white colors getting airbrushed on from 2 directions. Once that is done, I use some thinned GW Reikland fleshshade to tint things a little into the redder spectrum. I might do some brush highlights with Pallid Wych but avoid too much Titanium White since the metals need the Titanium White for the brightest reflections, and using it on the skin as well reduces the overall contrast. For the face, I use little bit of thinned down GW Caledor sky and Evil sunz scarlet to glaze some areas. Blue under the brows, red on the cheeks. Add more white to cheekbones, center of forehead, wherever the light should catch.
  7. If you are curious, this is an extension of the vendetta between the sixth legion and the fifteenth - search Burning of Prospero. The wolves hate Tzeentch because they know that deep down, they are themselves hypocrites 🤣 Although, if your question is why the sixth legion are wolves instead of cats, that would just be...the vagaries of dudes in the 80s writing the original Rogue Trader stuff?
  8. This is why I dont go to McDonalds. Culvers all the way!!! ew, nuggets???
  9. I’m betting the name of the twinsouls unit leader is “psychopomp” based on the revealed letters. Creative unit champion names at last! The Myrmidesh is likely a more mundane “Weaponmaster”
  10. Omg don't play with my heart. I would start 40k in a heartbeat. A HEARTBEAT.
  11. Agree @PiotrW - I am repainting mine and just ended up dismantling the entire thing so that I can get at it. Also, I ended up with two of the damn things because last week I impulse bought the Start Collecting kit when the store had no Melusai kits available. Gonna be a looooong winter.
  12. I'm starting work on my cauldron too and am thinking of doing alot of gold and black. Probably avoid too much brightness and instead have the Avatar glowing as the focal point. It's fun to brainstorm!
  13. It's been a productive month, I painted 4 witch elves and 1 khinerai. Also reached 80% on the fourth khinerai and settled on a scheme for the sisters of silence (above.) In contrast to the witch elves, the Sisters shall be colder in colors to create some contrast. White hair, and just gold for the body armor. I'm also going for a colder gold by removing the doombull brown entirely. Psyched to paint new colors! Also have some big bad melusai built. I find the unmasked mulusai faces dinky so I'm masking them ... They may be the only masked models in my army...
  14. I regularly strip and repaint, and occasionally sell. I feel tied down when I have too much stuff, and it always feels amazing to clean up 😃 When selling I usually get things to a tabletop standard. I’ve found that if things look reasonable you don’t have to sell at cheaper than MSRP (I mean technically you end up commission painting for free this way, but I like to think of it as more practice! Its like I get to practice on someone else’s models AND get rid of junk in my house???) At this point I’ve sold 2 armies, have 2 painted ones on shelves that I’m OK with keeping for now, and have 3 slow grow armies in progress. Of these 5 I own, 3 are full repaints. (Not to mention dozens of individual repaints when I’m testing out schemes.)
  15. As someone who struggles with painting eyeballs, I think if I got high resolution pictures of any of my minis they’d all have cat eyes... honestly if i can get the cat eyes looking in the same direction and not googly I am more than satisfied RE: the demon faces - I thought they looked weird this morning, but now they’ve kind of grown on me. I think they are disturbing enough, and are unique compared to other chaos sculpts in that they are just a touch of normal but also grotesque.
  16. Thats why they shouldnt sell at 90% off... I’m lucky to live near a large gaming store that also sells online. They offer 20% off and have been in business for decades (they just moved into a much larger store with a better location, and are clearly doing well) The key I think is reach. To make an equally simplified argument: Selling 1 more unit at 15% off is worth it if your customer base is large enough where your more competitive price means your margin is higher because of that 1 extra unit . It’s an equation with many variables where the goal of the seller is to find a local maximum for margin. That may shift to either a discount or a premium depending heavily on customer base size, demographic, rarity of product, etc. Smaller stores are constrained by total possible customer volume and thus cannot afford to discount as much, because that 1 more unit of sales is like 1 more boxinstead of 20 more boxes. It is entirely intelligent and profitable for large stores, especially with online presence and reach, to discount. The presence of large stores doing well over long periods of time with this strategy illustrates this. There is likely a sampling problem if you ignore store size because the vast najority of stores are small and cannot achieve the volume to make discounting a viable strategy. That does not make discounting a bad strategy though!
  17. What EccentricCircle said. It could not have been said better. Also, and this is a play on words - chaos is entropy (increasing disorder.) All processes lead to increasing entropy (thermodynamics law.) Therefore, all things that exist serve Chaos. In the end, only Chaos can win. (Maximum entropy.) Obviously, sigmar is CHAOS!
  18. Agree. I think boiling the wax paper will help with this if u can't get ur hands on baking parchment.
  19. For folks who don't have airbrushes - I recommend using Halfords or Rust-Oleum spray cans for priming and/or undercoating. The GW primers cost 3 times as much and aren't any better. In fact, if u ever want to strip ur models for repainting, the GW primers are a huge pain in the doodoo because they bond chemically to the plastic. Other money saving tips on the hobby side - GW brushes are expensive and short lived. Don't bother with them. Cheap synthetic brushes are fine, or get any of the high profile sable brushes and clean them after using them. Use a wet pallette. I've been painting for years and haven't run out of any pots of paint. Dry pallettes are incredibly inefficient with paint. Don't need to buy a wet pallette - just make one with wax paper and kitchen rolls or sponge.
  20. What the actual f@@k. Thats just stupid pricing. EDIT - ok i see it comes with quite a bit of terrain and 2 rulebooks, so thats not an outrageous amount from that perspective. I do think they overvalue their rulebooks though, those get invalidated quickly. Honestly the only thing I like about GW is the quality of their plastic. The rest is overpriced in my mind. @Milano if you like snakes the Start Collecting seems like good savings, relatively speaking. You will want the Cauldron anyway, so you are basically getting half off the Melusai. Also factor in the FLGS discount and its pretty dollars to points efficient compared to trying to collect a block of witch aelves 😆 Theres basically no reason to buy a Cauldron of Blood kit by itself if you are also going Melusai. Personally I love the witch elf sculpts so I’m committed to getting at least a small block of them done.
  21. These new khainite shadowstalkers are a mixed bag I think. I love the variations with the witch aelf and Sister of Slaghter, as well as several of the male sculpts! I’m not so keen on the frowning dude with the wobbley cloak thing, or the faceless boss lady. Might pick them up, but will plan to swap her head out if I do...
  22. I love elves as well, and I honestly don’t play much of the game anyway, so you may season my thoughts to taste depending on how much you care about playing games of AoS with your models: If you love the models, you may regret selling them off. How likely are you to be able to recollect them in the event you change your mind in the future? Does the availability of space and money the models would free up matter to you? The Old World is coming. If Horus Heresy is anything to go by, it will likely be huge, gorgeous, boutique, and include elves. (Heresy started with just a few astartes legions, but quickly expanded to include Mechanicum, Auxilia, Militia...) Your models may find a home in that setting. In the Heresy community, folks usually embrace the old RT era metal rhinos, land raiders, speeders. In fact, the “new” FW sculpts are draw heavily from them (the Deimos Rhino from FW is just a bigger old school metal rhino, the Land Raider Proteus is just a bigger old school Raider, ditto the Land Speeders, old armor mks, etc.) Unless you’re getting into competitive gaming, people usually don’t mind that your models might be smaller as long as you aren’t being “gamey” about it. This last bit comes down to the culture that develops around the new game, but I’m hopeful it follows the “historical” and “narrative” path the Heresy has taken. If you love the models, you could enjoy them as a long term hobby project, painting each to the best of your ability. Personally, I lean into this philosophy alot - I dont enjoy the gaming that much beyond an excuse to laugh, tell stories and drink with friends. Having models I am proud of increases the enjoyment I get from this, and so I would view the broad expanses of time between games as an opportunity to enjoy the oainting process. If I get lucky and get games in once a month, great. If I don’t get a game in for a few months - great, now I’ve gotten another 100 points painted! From a purely aesthetic standpoint, if I were to collect older midels, I would keep them with era specific touches. That means square bases. I think the historical context helps tell the story of what I would be trying to achieve - a beautiful 8th ed. army, proud of its heritage. I think it would be tacky to try to “modernize” just the bases - I dont need this army to look like something from 2020 AoS. If i wanted that, id just collect an AoS army.
