  1. Nice @Gitzdee, I found my Freeguilds with swords and shields struggled with the counter reaction as they were hitting mostly on 5s but I found if I put the cheaper units in small packs one could draw out the enemy activations while the others got revenge.
  2. So, played my first ever game of Warcry 2nd edition last week. Game was a matched play Skaven vs Cities of Sigmar. I've got to say, I'm mighty impressed. Rules are easy to learn, clear and concise. I printed out cards for all the fighters involved, each armies reactions and abilities and a set each of the universal reactions and abilities for each player. Barely referenced the core rules during the game and pretty much played off the cards. I was initially put off by the alternate activation but after playing this game I am a convert. They nailed it. Smooth rules and not crunchy at all. Super excited to try a campaign. Also, really impressed by how balanced the game was, even with a monstrous Stormfiend in the game. I lost but had I moved in on the objective a little earlier... Highly recommended.
  3. Ah, I think these previews are great. I do want the excitement of seeing everything just before release but these hints serve a practical purpose too. I am currently actively painting my Cities army but will probably alter my paint queue in response to the previews. It seems my existing Freeguild models may work in a Dawnbringer army but rebasing may be required (due to the trend for larger bases).
  4. I am so delighted we have a Legends program. I have some Knights of Order on my painting table right now. I do wish some of the older first edition compendium scrolls got another update though. Broadly, I think Games Workshop have got it right. It isn’t good for the game to have essential units that new players can’t easily go and buy. In friendly games at home, I think having some rules for out of production units is fantastic.
  5. The basic mechanics are pretty straight forward and logical. There is quite a bit of decision making as to how each model moves and acts. Would I use the words easy, simple and non-complicated? Probably not, perhaps easy to grasp the basics but the rules have quite a few layers to learn. I wouldn't recommend this game for young kids, maybe something like 10-12+ years of age.
  6. I have no issues with seasonal rules for this reason - the players’ playing the most get the most benefit from it. Yes, the odds are if you play a random game at the club it will be with a player who plays frequently and they will probably want to use this extra layer of rules. That’s not really a problem with the game though. I play infrequently with casual opponents who are happy to leave out the seasonal rules.

  8. I am reading the new Warcry Core Book and gosh it is impressing me. Really clean, tight rules set with a campaign mode that presses all the exploration and Warband growth buttons. And a compelling storyline that looks like it will have a nice beginning, middle and end. This looks like it might be a new favourite skirmish game.

    Question: My main hero for my Cities (Hammerhal) list isn't able to pick from the same list of Hero Traits as listed in the narrative section of the Core Book. Is this an error with the app or am I getting it wrong?
  10. Haven't come across this story? Is it set closer to the Perimeter Inimical? The lore for the Ghurish Heartlands has developed to be far more 'normal'. The land masses do move but the time scale is more like centuries rather than days. There are frequent earthquakes but the people live with them much like the people who live on the rim of fire do in our world today. There are indeed farms, hunting villages, fishing hamlets, caravans, townships, trade roots and toll roads. Recommend reading Hallowed Ground to get a good sense of the surrounds of Excelsis in recent times. A careful reading even puts a scale to the Heartlands map. (For example, you can work out that Salzagor's Hope is just over 100 miles from Excelsis by road).

I remember when 40K was about the same age as Age of Sigmar is now and the manager of Mind Games Melbourne, probably the biggest bricks and mortar Games Workshop stockist in the state, was livid about the new direction of 2nd edition 40K. There was a huge exodus of Dungeons and Dragons players at the time. I was surprised as I thought this new version was the best thing ever made. My point is that gaming groups do break up and whilst it can be melancholic, it isn’t inherently bad. If you aren’t done with the Mortal Realms yourself, seek out new enthusiasts. I think there are a lot of people out there who are still having a lot of fun with it.
  12. I like command points too but I do think that there is so many layers put on top of the core rules. It is really likely many rules will be forgotten about if you play casually. The more I think about it the more I think that 'open play' should become 'casual play'.
  13. @Gitzdee, depends I think. Casual game with a new player, I’d take quite a bit of time explaining what I have, how it works and even give them some tips on what tactics they should watch out for. For a more experienced player, much less. You must of course play with an open army list, your opponent is allowed to read your list and any options you have taken.
  14. @RexHavoc, sometimes our mates drift off to other games for a whole host of reasons. If you still have a passion for Age of Sigmar, I think seek out some nice folks who feel the same way. Compliments for your original post. This is good feedback for the next edition of the game.
  15. Wow, this looks terrific. This is where I'd like to see open play go. I've been learning the game with a new player by playing without the allegiance abilities. Just core rules and what's on the cards - really fun. This looks like a really nice way of playing.
  16. I am delighted to see that beautiful art but I am all in on Age of Sigmar. I can’t see myself playing or collecting any Old World again. I am very happy for all those who are excited for its return. 🙂
  17. I really like this direction, I hope they retain the overall look of a historical massed ranked army that fights with sword and shield. I am even optimistic I may be able to combine my existing Freeguild collection with these future kits. Looking very promising.
  18. I actually hope they go with one aesthetic for cities humans. A bit like cadians for 4OK. It might not reflect everything in the lore but I’d rather a cohesive we’ll supported range over a sprawling but sparsely supported one. A more diverse range of alternative models would work best with Warcry. Love what they have done for the Chaos war bands - just fantastic.
  19. @Neil Arthur Hotep, beautiful mate! I can really appreciate how much work has gone into this. Love the glaze on the barding, cool colours, face on the battlemage. Your basing is perfect too with the sign post and weathered cobble stones - it's a little diorama! Lilac lenses look great too! I tip my hat to you sir. @Maddpainting, what you have done was my initial plan. You should put up some photos when you are finsihed. Be great to see how it turns out.
  20. Oh excellent responses from all! I’m going to go with the Kharadron Ironclad - breathtakingly awesome. The Eiladon would be a close second. I’m painting a Isharann Tidecaster at the moment and it is just a spectacular model. Many, many incredible models to choose from that’s for sure.
  21. I've have really enjoyed the reveals so far. I never have high expectations about them so I they don't ever really disappoint me. It's got me in the mood for more painting! I liked everything, particularly: - New Skaven character (gorgeous model!) - The new Daemon Prince images - I now think it will be really cool. - The Cities of Sigmar announcement. As a Freeguild player, this gives me a bit of time to finish my army before the next wave and if it takes it's queues off the wonderful Cursed City and Ven Denst characters then the army is in good hands. - The awesomely awesome Ogroid models Looking forward to the upcoming Underworlds and Warcry announcements.
  22. Not knocking anyones opinion but I LOVE those new Ogroids. They seem to have a few subtle nods to the old Chaos Ogres which is cool - I think they look awesome!
  23. Fantastic stuff, especially that gorgeous Chaos Lord on Daemonic Mount! I think the very busy looking Daemon Prince would paint up quickly using contrast. I think I'd prefer to go to town on the old one. It's sweeping, open surfaces really shine with a careful layer/edge/glaze paint job. Might see if I can get the old one before it's gone... ... Although, I do have a tendency to not really appreciate how good new models are at first glance. Maybe I need to give it a few days to see if my opinion changes?
  24. My initial thoughts of the Incarnate was that it was just okay but the more I look at it the more I like it. I would love to paint one up but I have heaps of ruined buildings and two Ghurish Heartland game boards already. Hopefully, the Incarnate will get an individual release later. I am very tempted to get the scenery pack but I think it will be just the book for now.
