  1. I've also noticed loads of odd wording and poor grammar in my actual lore - oh the pains of proof reading your own stuff and mistakes not jumping out until you posted it on the Internet for the world to see!

But the actual fluff itself isn't all that important. The important part is to try and inspire people to come up with their own cool Triumvirates! :D

  2. Thanks for the comments guys! Yes DoT have lots of scope for some cool Triumvirates, especially as they are already a trio of Deamon, Arcanite and Tzangor.

For making the pages, sometimes you can copy elements start out of a PDF just by right-clicking copy. I took the greenish background from one of the Sylvaneth warscrolls and then put a generic grunge texture I found on google over the top. On the painting showcase pages I wanted it to look a little lighter so I removed the aforementioned Sylvaneth background and so that's just the grunge texture on its own. You can find loads of them on Google if you put in a quick search.

As for the other little bits and pieces one of my hobbies is playing around in Photoshop so I am always taking things from here or there and seeing what I can create. Like the hammer logo on the painting showcase is taken from the app loading screen. I took a screenshot on my iPad, emailed it to myself, loaded it up in Photoshop and turned it into a transparent layer that I can use.

The art on the second page is by a fantastic artist named Miranda Wang and the Griffon concept art is a Warhammer Total War concept piece.

Hope that gives some idea :) making campaign book pages like this can be really fun.

  3. Incredible work Steve! So from reading your comments you were able to do to the bulk of painting just from rattle cans and then tidied up, did some final highlights and then the gold trim to complete it?

I am always intrigued by these approaches because I haven't yet invested in an airbrush, so being able to do it with rattle cans is intriguing.

Where they all GW brand, or were some from another brand?

Hey Bottle, Fantastic Campaign although i do have a question.

Models with the Hero keyword start with 50 experience. (lvl 5)
Does this mean that they get to roll 5 times on the Advancement Table before the campaign starts?

Or do you not roll and is this just a measure that makes the general less Overpowered at lvl 10?

Great question. This has been asked a couple of times now so I will update the FAQ to include the answer too.

The rule is meant to be played that Heroes do not begin with any advancement rolls. The idea is they already have superior abilities and the 50 experience represents that making them level up slower than regular models.

The rule I am considering (and play testing now) for a future update is that models (regardless of the hero keyword) start with experience based on their wounds profile. I am conscious that currently elite non-hero models such as Kurnoth Hunters are favoured due to the way the rule works.

  5. @Galas Wow! What a cracking mini-campaign that sounds like! I am so happy to hear you had fun. I always love to hear about people using the Realm Master campaign section as it doesn't get anywhere near the same amount of spotlight the basic Hinterlands does. Adapting the scenario to make it about Skaven and cave entrances is a fantastic idea and I loved hearing about the adventures the Stormcast and Dwarfs went on together. Do let me know if you play any more games! :D

We played a game recently and we wondered how you would handle units which "transform" into something else.

For instance a dying Pink Horror - will he split into two Blue horrors? Or would you have to pay this for gold as if you would be playing with points?

Also - how is everybody seeing a single Pink Horror casting magic? Technically he is the cheapest full caster in a HInterlands game as a "unit" of Pink Horrors is a Wizard.

Good questions! As per the basic Hinterlands RAW, the Blue Horrors and Brimstone Horrors would not be allowed from a dying Pink horror. This is outlined on Page 3 in the paragraph titled 'Reinforcements'. I think if you wanted to play a bit more loosely you could do so, but you might want to increase the Pink Horror gold cost to account for this. (I would recommend making Pink Horrors 23 gold coins each to account for 14 for the Pink, 5 for the Blue and 4 for the Brimstone).

With regards to Pink horrors, they are a great choice for a cheap wizard. The rules of 1 are used in Hinterlands, and allegiance abilities (including spell lores) are not. This means they can only cast Mystic Shield or Arcane Bolt which hopefully doesn't make them too strong!

  6. Let me know how your campaign progresses and what its like using both Experience and Cost to calculate the Underdog Rating. I omitted it to keep things simple but it is a perfect thing to switch up. I guess you drafted up your Fyreslayer band before the new points that would of course make them cheaper in gold now too, but armies without much shooting are probably always going to struggle a bit in Hinterlands. I am putting together my own Fyreslayer warband as we speak and can't wait to try out the Runemaster who I think will be very powerful. I will include some Thunderers if I feel I am getting too outgunned. :D

Ok, a situation poped up and I'm curious how everybody else is handling it. Retributors and executioners normally do nmortal wounds on a to hit roll of 6+. If, when they level up, I roll that they now get +1 to hit, do they now do mortal wounds on a 5+ (like they would in normal AOS when a character such as a lord Celestant buffs them), or is they simply have the minimum roll to hit be 2 better than normal? Just curious as to how everybody else plays, or what the RAI was when writing this rule.

RAW is they do exploding damage on a 5+ now, RAI is have a vote with your gaming group to decide :D

I am currently playtesting myself a limit on the amount of mortal wounds that bypass saving throws a turn - I posted up some of the experimental rules in the TGA thread (which is good  for general discussion too):

Yeah, like I said, it might just be us overreacting to a single character that is just very good. Honestly, of the 14 people in our group, I suspect only about 10 will really play more than once a month, but I will let you know our findings. It's also a good spread of armies, so we should be able to test a lot of different lists. I was planning on playing some games tonight, but sadly I live in the part of Northern California that just got evacuated.

Oh no! I hope you managed to grab your models when being evacuated!

  9. Ah, thanks for explaining. Wow, 14 players is a great size for some real insights into how the system stands up. I would greatly appreciate any feedback you can give at a later date :D

I initially made the rule of three to curtail ranged heroes and other AoE abilities - I worry about nerfing melee heroes because there are only 5 or so turns in a game and if you keep your warband spread out or drip feed grunts you can keep them at bay (from my experience). I would be really keen to know what your experiences are however :) so let me know!

Hey Sam, awesome job with the rules, my gaming group is starting and I got my first few games in tonight. Two Comments/questions/suggestions though. Maybe the rule of three should be made so that no One weapon can target the same model more than three times in a turn. We (my opponent and I) are proposing this because his Orruk Megaboss  seemed to be an unstoppable force. His six attacks with his boss choppa were murdering everything, and even with only 4 wounds he was nearly taking out entire warbands by himself. The second question, have you considered the bonus spells Sylvaneth (and now tzeentch) get for their alliance? Do you still get those for having a purely Sylvaneth (or tzeentch) keyword army?

After playtesting with a darkoath chieftain I must say I agree with Mrmattywoodz. 6 attacks on the charge and then a mortal wound to every unit nearby when a model is killed was brutal and simply wiped half the opposing players warband off the table.

Hey guys, thanks for the comments and I am happy to see you using the rules. Just to quickly clarify, the Rule of Three limits attacks and abilities to being applied to no more than 3 enemy models in a single phase. For example with the Darkoath Chieftain if it charged in and applied all it's attacks onto one model and slayed it, it could then Deathblow ability against a further 2 models within 1". If it charged in and instead split its attacks against 3 models and slayed them all, it's Deathblow wouldn't trigger as the Darkoath Chieftain would have already made attacks against 3 models and killed them all too.

I think this is what you are proposing above,. I can perhaps clarify this in the FAQ and look to amending the wording if it throws off a lot of people.

As for the allegiance abilities. The standard allegiance abilities are not used (as mentioned on page 5 of version 2), which means the Sylvaneth, BCR, Bonesplittaz and Tzeentch (and upcoming Stormcast) allegiance abilities are not used either. However, I am really keen for the community to create extras and add-ons for Hinterlands, and this seems like a perfect expansion to make if anyone is keen! :)

Thanks for complimenting the army, I was originally inspired to overhaul them for AoS after seeing your thread on Dakka. Only bad photos! I've got a new phone with a marginally better camera and should really use it as an excuse to getting around to starting a thread on the painting board showing my guys off.

Bizarrely, most of the banners and shields on my newer dwarf stuff are red and gold (well, red and Averland Sunset), so it seems I'm in good company. The few bits and pieces of Empire stuff I've got painted so far are in Averland black and yellow uniforms though, so I'm planning on doing a bit of background about them being a noble house/trading company with a slightly different colourscheme to the rest of the force.

Red and yellow we make it then! :) I am really happy to hear my original Dakka thread got you motivated. I hope you do get the chance to do some individual shots eventually - or even better would be to see them at an event!

Love the colour of the knights! What paints did you use, and how did you achieve it?

Thanks! I work from white undercoat and this was the method:

    Basecoat: Stegadon Scale "Green"

Wash: Asurmen Blue (this is the old GW wash, a lot lighter then Drakenhof - I am currently sourcing a replacement and going to get my first ever none GW paint - Army Painter Blue Tone).

    Highlight 1: Russ Grey

    Hightlight 2: Fenrisian Grey

Highlight 3: Pallid Wytch Flesh (dotted only in the corners and sharpest of edges.

I hope this helps :D Stegadon Scale Green is my favourite paint to do blue from. Not sure why GW didn't call it Stegadon Scale Blue though...

  12. Your painting ability is truly outstanding. I loved your Death army and am already blown away by your Sylvaneth units. They are clean and smooth like the 'Eavy Metal teams models but I think these are to an even higher standard. Will you be entering Golden Demon this year? I think if you made a scenic base for the Dyrads you would have a very good chance in the unit category.

  13. Oh wow, your army looks amazing! (Do you have a thread/blog with more pictures?)

It seems only fitting that the floating island is brought into the image somewhere. I have a flag in my handgunners unit but I was planning to copy the flag of Venice (which a rich crimson background) and I thought the gold and crimson would really stand out against the drab browns I was planning to paint the models in. (Also I recently went on holiday to Venice :P ).

Wow, not sure how I missed these! :( You never fail to make me feel bad about my own painting ability! :D

My only real criticism would be that while beautifully highlighted you've chosen to leave most of the details on the body of the hurricanum and the knights' shield the same colour as the background they are on, but that's probably got more to do with the way I'm used to seeing studio models painted and is a pretty bold choice on your part.

The damsel's alternative colourscheme and the waywatcher are especially cool. Did you scoop best army in the end?

Thanks, DM! Yes it was a choice to do everything blue, and maybe not one everyone will like! I liked the idea of both units being very very blue and thought the detail would like embossed as a result. :)

Didn't scoop best army, that was won by Ian Gilmore's utterly fantastic Nurgle army! I didn't stand a chance!

I would like to add a Freeguild General on Griffon this year and go for the GW red scheme - that should really stand out alongside the Hurricanum and the Steamtank to give me a solid trio of centrepieces in the army when I go to tournies :D

Nice job on the Hurricanum - I painted mine recently and agree it was abit of a pain, especially the interior parts. Any plans for the Luminark or other Collegiate Arcane models?

Thanks for the kind words! I do actually have a little collection of Wizards which I posted in this blog post (linked below). What I do have planned moving forward is creating a Blanchitsu style ("AoS28" it's being called) warband for my Hinterlands Skirmish project. I am going to theme the Warband from Greywater Fastness so it's going to be a mixture of Ironweld and Collegiate, and I would like to give them all a drab and polluted look to represent the city.

    Great stuff!

I was also starting to play with these kind of ideas, but nothing as good as this!!

Some things I was implementing; ramdom pools of loot drops from enemy units (going from nothing, to one use equipment as those following), Healing Potions with 1d3 or 1d6 healing power to use on a Hero Phase, +1 Venom to be applied to a weapon for a given combat to be decided at the start of such given combat.

Will be using this for sure, to continue my narrative ongoing campaign play with my nephew,  thanks a lot!

Awesome idea! This is for the Realm Master Campaign section? I did make a whole handful of potions with one use effects originally. They didn't make it into this cut but I wanted to add them into a later source book. :)

Really good, can tell you put in a lot of work. Bit miffed as I have been writing something similar with far less effort and its put me to shame haha!

It's one of the things that spurred me on to get mine finished as I could see lots of people tapping into the same idea. If you've got anything you would change, let me know!

This is fantastic! Strikes me as a much better jumping on point for new comers with its low model count than Path to Glory. I'm definitely going to try and get a group going with this supplement.

I hope you manage to do so. It's these comments that make me the happiest to see, so let me know if it takes off! :)

Amazing stuff, I should really start paying attention to this site outside of the forum! :o

I've only had a chance to skim though the (fantastic looking) document, but will read it in full when I'm on the tube tomorrow. Let me know if you need any feedback or playtesting doing. :)

Thanks man, I am always looking for feedback so let me know your thoughts (hopefully in your usual witty tone!)

Very excited to try this out!  Suggest that you also post to the forums as I had a hard time finding this even though I was looking for it.  Saw the post on Dakka but couldn't find it where I was expecting it.

Good idea, I hadn't thought of putting it in the forums area too. Thanks for the kind words too :-)

Made an account just for this, I am so excited to try it out this weekend. It was the final thing that encouraged me to finally take the plunge and buy models.

If I actually get to play it next weekend I'll make sure I post up a battle report.

Oh, do share the report please if you get the chance. I would love to hear how it goes!
