Let's chat Kharadron Overlords

I was brainstorming an idea for a new Hero Model for the Duardin/Kharadron Overlords and am curious if my idea is interesting or downright broken and how you you guys "fix" or balance it. Its all pure fictional but I was inspired by reading about Frontiersmen out in the old days of American expansionism. I also want to see how GW tries to flesh out their model line by making different animal models for one of the Mechanics I am toying with. And its quite in keeping with the current GW idea of individualizing your characters/heroes by stating they hail from one Realm or another. I try to keep an idea of balance but I do want this to be akin to a Rambo-style model that differs slightly from the ranged capability of the faction itself. I also want it to be a good companion piece to other Order armies.

Here goes:

Frontier Prospector (Points: 140)

Unlike their fellow Duardin whom prefer the comforts of civilization and progress, the Frontier Prospectors of the Kharadron Overlords thrive off the spirit of exploration...with the ultimate purpose of discovering new potential business ventures and selling them off to the highest bidder. And with the use of the Realmgates these daring dwarfs will stop it nothing at striking it big.

MOVE: 4"

WOUNDS: 5

SAVE: 4+

BRAVERY: 8

Missile Weapons:

Aethermatic Blunderbuss

Range: 8"       Attacks:3       Hit: 4+     Wound:3+  Rend:N.A.   Damage: D3

Melee Weapons:

Gromril-Breaker Mattock

Range:1"    Attacks: 3    Hit:4+  Wound:4+  Rend:-2 Damage:1

Frontier Knife

Range:1" Attacks: 2      Hit:4+  Wound:3+  Rend:-1 Damage: 1

ABILITIES:

Realm Familiar:

A Frontier Prospector is accompanied by an animal companion model chosen from the list below. This companion model cannot be targeted by attacks or abilities, cannot be used as line of sight blocking and cannot pile in. It does not count towards transport capacity. When the Frontier Prospector is removed from the board, remove the animal companion as well.

Azyr Familiar (Falcon model): This model can ignore all cover when firing its Missile weapons. Add 1 to Hit rolls for one Missile weapon profile.

Aqshy Familiar (Baby Salamander model): Add 1 to the Attack profile of one of this model's melee weapons and +1 to Hit rolls.

Shyish Familiar (Skeleton Dog model):  You may re-roll failed Save rolls once per turn. When in combat with models from Grand Alliance Order, add 1 to Hit and Wound rolls for one of this model's melee weapons profile.

Ghyran Familiar (Some Groot looking plant thing model): In your hero phase, you may heal D3 wounds. When in combat with models from Grand Alliance Death, add 1 to Hit and Wound rolls for one of this model's melee weapons profile.

Ulgu Familiar(Raven model): During Combat phase on your turn, treat all wounds assigned by 1 melee weapon as mortal wounds. When in combat with models from Grand Alliance Chaos, add 1 to Hit and Wound rolls for one of this model's melee weapons profile.

Hyish Familiar (Fox model): When this model chooses to run in the movement phase, treat it as though you roll a 6. During the combat phase on your opponent's turn, when this model is selected, you may have it retreat instead including running.

Ghur Familiar (Snake Model): If this model is charged, roll a dice. On 5+ deal D3 mortal wound on charging model/unit. When in combat with models from Grand Alliance Destruction, add 1 to Hit and Wound rolls for one of this model's melee weapons profile.

Chamon Familiar (Mastiff Model): When Charging, you roll 3 dice instead of 2. Model/Unit charged reduces number of attacks by D3.

Only take what you can carry

You cannot equip this model with any additional items.

Lay of the land

While within 3 inches of any terrain features, this model can make wound saves on 3+ and can ignore mortal wounds on  5+. You ignore all terrain effects and does not block your line of sight.

Let me tell you about this little guy:

Once per game in your Hero Phase, you may have a model/unit within 10" gain the ability of your chosen Realm Familiar.  All abilities that say "Model" are now changed to "Model/Unit".  This lasts until end of the battle round.

You call that a knife?!

Once per round, if you successfully Hit a model with your Frontier Knife, you may choose to roll a dice. On 5+ deal 1 mortal wound for each successful hit. You may declare this anytime in the combat phase.

Frontier Justice:

Once per game in your Hero Phase, you ignore Mortal wounds on 4+. All your Melee weapon profiles are doubled in the combat phase. This lasts until the end of the battle round.

Looks cool. I always like to see people's homebrew rules.

The 3+ save seems a little high for a scout/frontiersman. Maybe instead he could have a 4+ and a rule where in terrain he gets an additional bonus (5+ ignore wounds & Mortal wounds or something like that)to represent his knowledge of the land.

I'm still waiting for a new graphic tablet (21 of june), but I will ty to make a model for this Hero. If someone can help with some concepts...(I will try to do some, but I'm really busy right now).

Wow, thanks.  I guess looks wise, it will look like a much less armored Kharadron Overlord Hero. No oversized backpack, maybe best comparison is with a Thunderer's armor but less armored and with furs drapped over its shoulders. Maybe a swappable head. One with the typical Kharadron faceplate and the other being a revealed face with all its bearded glory, maybe with a Davy Crockett styled coonskin hat and some fancy smoking pipe in mouth.

For his weapon, I was thinking the blunderbuss is integrated into his melee weapon like so:

But much longer, maybe rifle length and like most Kharadron weapons for Heroes is attached to his backpack via some long cable. A Mattock is a cross between a Pickaxe and a hoe.

How's this for a prospector concept?

Kharadron prospectors concept

I am guessing that is the Skeleton Dog. Looks great!

Actually the Realm Familiars idea could work for all factions. GW could sell it as a set of models and rules would vary between models the Familiars go with. Wizards might get some magical buffs or disbinding skills.

I played in GW’s hero battles this last weekend. I brought the bubble king. He was a one days paint project. I have to say I was extremely impressed with his hitting power. I ended up loosing to Kroak (I forgot about my impact mortal wounds ability) but otherwise I was extremely happy sniping and crushing all opponents that looked my way. Has anyone played him in big games? Him with endrinriggers on the Charge out of a clown car seems downright frightening.

I wish Brok wasn't so specific to Barak-Nar because the fluff purist in me wouldn't allow me to paint him up in Zilfin colors which I chose for my collection.

I wish there were more special characters available to the other SkyPorts.  Or just more in general.

Im sure you could create a model that looked more Ziflin appropraite, but could use Brokk rules. You could probably use a Gunhauler, stripped down a little bit with an Admiral model standing on the prow.

The only specific thing is the title. There isn’t a single keyword or rule that makes him unplayable for the other cities. Now that I’ve played him, and I find he’s awesome he’ll be seeing more table time.

I don't see GW touching KO again for another year or two

I generally would agree, but based on the past I could see them releasing a 'one-off' special character for the start of a campaign.

Coming back to Brokk, is there any reason that there isn't a more generic warscroll for him? For example, the Lord Celestant on Dracoth and Vandus Hammerhand? Why is there no Brokk Grunggson and just a Sky-Port Lord Magnate?

Because every army needs a unique hero model. There is no generic version of Alarielle, Morathi or the Celestant-Prime.
Vandus is a exception as his rules were more of an afterthought when they released the starterbox Lord Celestant kit.

Something like the Deepkin King (double kits : named superboss of the poster boyz/generic random king) would have been nice...

I feel like this is where I was going with my question. I understand that Vandus was possibly more of an afterthought, but I do also see the Alarielle side of things too. Tricky one. I just feel like this would make him more easily playable under different colour schemes. I mean, I'm painting mine in the colours of my invented skyport, but I would prefer to be able to justify it in fluff too.

I painted my Brokk in Zilfin colours. I just figure my admiral is incredibly jealous of the war harness and paid more than an arm and a leg to the creator to get his own made. It probably explains why it always wounds him on the overcharge as well.

The picture isnt clear enough to make out exact points but it looks like most or all the battalions went down.  I know for sure Aetherstrike and the escort wing dropped cause they were both 200 and are 1xx in this image.

Point changes:
Gunahuler - 160
Frigate - 240
Ironclad-420
Khemist-160
Navigator-80
Admiral-120
Brokk-260
endrinmaster-120
Skywardens-120

I cant recall what our previous battalion costs were to compare them.

I know my list just went up 80 points... huzzah....

The point changes for the heroes are all understandable. The Khemist had been your go to hero, maybe that will change now.
But why did they made Skywardens more expensive? Did anyone really play them? I only ever see Endrinriggers.

No changes in that regard. I also haven't seen any warscroll updates related to the Wardens in the previews I have watched today...

my list went up 80pts too.

there is literally no reason to take wardens at all now

nothing changed bar you take more riggers instead of your 9 wardens now.

nothing was opened up in regard to battleline or different unit sizes roles

sooooo basically my clown car stays and i add 10 more arks.

thats all the innovation for ko for another year. what a bust.
