I actually think the guys in that image look very much like classic army Empire guys.

I mean there’s an obvious similarity(I still see this as just placeholder art) but they do look like they’re in more baggy modernized clothes with knee pads and upper body plates & pauldrons strapped on compared to the old pajamas & classic historic flair.

image.jpeg.c56c943bb63be3ac97c184c548d2adb7.jpeg

In comparison they look closer to DnD/Pathfinder guards.

I have definitely painted that leather cap you identified as a pilot hat a few times.

Yeah, that’s the “peasant” caps I meant. The simple leather caps just meant to give the head the barest of cover like the Gunmaster’s did:

image.jpeg.e3af5bbe6a56a5f244ccb52d74834f71.jpeg
But you can see how basic that is(and thus the peasant cap)

Guy on the bottom is rocking a leather helmet with ear guard cross patterns invented in the 1900’s British football helmets.

Could just be pure fantasy style without that actual context but it does look more advanced.

Age of Sigmar needs something more “Lumineth” unique and closer to the Belakor Legionnaires for it’s average uniforms to distinguish itself from out under the dead world’s shadow.

Well we agree here. Certainly in better uniforms that are fully sealed up from boots to gloves to survive a sentient-death jungle than the long gone imperial fools that tried Lustria. xD

Is that a current Lustria sourcebook for wfrp, an upcoming one, or a mock up? I've not seen it on the C7 websites when planing what to get.

I also want to see a reimagining of the old puffy sleeves and hats style. I mean, the Ironweld elf from that recent Greywater book shows what a modernized version of that could look like. Especially for the permanent armies of Sigmar's mega-cities, I think a certain level of pomp would be appropriate.

Side note, I definitely hope we don't see the average Freeguild dude in an armour that looks like the Chaos Legionaires'. Not because it looks bad or anything, but because I would die if I had to cleanly paint those tiny rivets on their brigandine for 30 dudes.

In any case, I think it's fairly probable that we will see a mix of low tech and high tech with the new Freeguild. The weapon preview suggests lower tech, more highly armoured core troops, but recent models like Hexbane's Hunters are not abandoning the established high tech elements yet. So I think that both will be present in the final release, as well.

Thought I’d put this here.

So seems the Darkoaths are our “second freeguild” band.

Video points out stuff like the Predator mask being a city-Aelf wearing it and the bottom guy is wearing a Hammerhal Belt and kneepads that have the Stormcast insignia masks on them(I noticed this part but just assumed tribal trophies meant to invoke the Stormcast image since they were a bit off)

FB_IMG_1664205065544.jpg

This must’ve been what happened to Camp Fortune after the Warcry book noted they went mad. They were possessed by the spirits in the woods.

“The thing is, there's no reference to Talax having any further connection with Camp Fortune. The implication sequence of events is: 1) Second expedition is launched, 2) they make it to Talaxis and fill their coffers to the brim with loot, 3) the explorers start going nutty, 4) the expedition implodes at Camp Fortune (either through in-fighting or getting attacked), and 5) Talax runs off into the Gnarlwood to complete his descent into madness”

So as an uncorrupted Warband they were:

City-Aelf tracker.

Sigmarite Warpriest

Hammerhal Commander(looks a bit like the Cursed City Azyrite Knight)

and Ghurian Battlemage.

Rings of how Belakor looks to be using traitor freeguilders as his legionaries in Warcry.

At least we can see the versatility is there with Faith, Magic, Sigmarite and Aelven/Duardin allies.

Would be fun to “purify them” with some kitbashes to fix the Aelf head, de-skullify the Warpriest and replace everything above the commander’s belt head with a Freeguild model. Then you can throw in two gryph-hounds and either use this as a Hexbane proxy force or Warcry warband with a Knight-Judicator ally(who supplies the gryph-hounds, also could work for a 500 point Open Play skirmish game with warband + Judicator points)

That explains why those new Darkoath guys intuitively appealed to me so much more than the previous ones. I don't have a lot of interest in Conans usually, so I was surprised that I found these new guys actually kind of intriguing. Must have been the fact that they are actually wearing pants tha did it for me. That narrative narrative of a band of explorers getting corrupted by the bestial nature of Ghur is also fun enough that I can see myself using it as the basis for a Soulbound one shot.

Between this and the fantastic new Grave Guard, I am definitely picking up the Gnarlwood box. It's a complete hit for me.

This concept mock-up of his potential new Shyishian Cities of Sigmar army goes into why I think the reboot will start it at a “generic soldier” level rather than go full tilt into cooler stuff like super-steampunk, Ghur tribesmen or Aqshy fire-lion knights.

Fdwxa2zWAAAyVvT.jpg
Much like Lumineth Vanari(and to an extent the Sons of Behemat) there’s an easier time kitbashing and building around the crazy epic fantasy stuff if the freeguilders base allows you to branch off into wackier designs and multiple Realms themes.(so pretty standard soldiers but with enough skulls, leaves, candles, comets or metallic emblem bits that you can customize them to be holding the line at any Realmscape)

This is the same Ricki who's also known as @Melcavuk on this website right? Cause this feels like one of his projects and I'm all for it. I'm personally hoping we get "upgrade" kits for each realm, and then a bunch of base models we can customize to our delight. My reasoning for this is simple, @Public Universal Duardin pointed out a long time ago that Hysh generally = Egyptian aesthetic, and therefore I plan on using Hyshsian bits to rebuild my Tomb Kings army.

There are desert and snake vibes along with cowls and suitably big hats.

YmFlFe-Iugqk3XQD0i_1zLc3wChNBRUhs22lIilZ

Other notes are the Crawling City having Gold-masked Hyshite Tyrion worshippers singing hymns to the people(so Hammerhal masks can double as Stormcast faithful or Tyrionites) and in Broken Realms it’s noted humans & aelves deal with the Realm’s suppressive heat(being the magic sun and all) by wearing large hats to guard their heads against the moon-reflected rays or with crystal goggles to protect their eyes.

That could start for a few tech-looking freeguilders from Ironweld and then pull double duty as Chamon aether-goggles protecting against the poison metal gases about or the Hysh crystal goggles via a quick shiny paint job.

I’d love a Ironweld double-barreled rocket battery. Would pay homage to the old one while making something very unique. 💥

Also would like to get rocket-gun troops like the Age of Empires 3 game has with a Flintlock Rocket upgrade:

IMG_0703.png

That’d be a cool way to play on the new hand-cannons with a rocket you can put in the barrel instead as a way of the Ironweld upgrading troops out on the frontiers.

Would also help with an Aqshy flavor for freeguilders from that Realm used to using crushed Emberstones to make their own and specialize in siege warfare by burning down enemy forts or defending their firey keeps with every incendiary trick imaginable. 🔥

I don't know about the rest of y'all but I for one am all ready to read far too much into a Whitefang reaction here.

Please Honourable Fang, another react to confirm that the now confirmed awesome new Ironweld will include Dwarves?

In fact, I have made that kitbash already:

If the new Freeguild gets field artillery and weapon teams like thr Imperial Guard did, I would be completely satisfied with the refresh. That would guarantee that there is at least one list there that I am excited about.

When they revealed the new Guard kits basically all I was thinking abouts was how cool something like this would be for AoS.

But with Dwarves as well, yeah? Don't forget the Dwarves.

Some new White Dwarf lore as the Rhondal campaign travels south into Lendu and Orruks seem keen to besiege the Everquake City:

> “BRINNOCK
> On the surface, Brinnock is a Sigmarite strongpoint much like any other, yet its foundations run deep. In chambers submerged far below the surface, Sigmarite explorers discovered an ancient hexagonal chamber with some bizarre apparatus at its heart. Even the learned mages of the Collegiate Arcane could translate few of the runes lining the walls, gleaning only that its makers founded the place during a long-forgotten war with the worshippers of Nodh Kur in Gallet. Further investigation revealed the purpose of the chamber's mechanisms. Through arcane artifice, it could craft rock, metal and bone together into armour far more efficiently than any traditional forge and enchant it so that it was light enough for a human to wear. The Ghurish magic inherent to this process renders it volatile, especially in the Era of the Beast. Even so, a cabal of warded and sanctioned acolytes of the Collegiate Arcane labour beneath Brinnock's streets, working to produce specialist armour for the crusades.”

Possibly just lore fluff but that does sound like some crazy beast-powered armor you’d see out of the Monster Hunter series with fused metal, rock & bone too heavy under normal circumstances.

Or the armors hewn from rock stuff out of Soulsborne.

Edit: (though lighter bulky armor could explain the battle axe concept since it had a skull in it as fused bone and the gauntlets were pretty large. I thought City Ogor but magic beast armor would work.)

And more a fun post, someone did the female Hexbane witch hunter to her natural 18th century conclusion:

To Kingdom Come! (Really loving how high fantasy the shields and pauldrons are. Feels like Freeguild will look plain in the center of their body and let the fantastical weapons and defenses do the talking)

seems good kitbashing flavor too for Realm forces.

Skulls-Shyish

flowers & vibes- Ghyran

Lions- Ghur

Sigmar icons- Azyr, Hammerhal

On a note of “Cities of Nagash” for Death kitbashers out there here’s an amazing redditor you can look at:

Also Ironweld Witch Hunter which is what I hope the future reboot encourages for more flavorful kit-swaps of diverse cities and troops.

Might be just baseless speculation, but that lone Summer Battletome looks mighty suspicious...
Perhaps a quick release just before (June)/a bit after 40k 10th edition (August)?

Probably we'll get more battletomes in summer but pointing it out the order first seems also to me it will be cities.
