Overread
What follows is a list of the publications (books/ebooks) from Black Library and their collected versions for Age of Sigmar. This intends to be an aid to those new to the stories so that you can easily find out what best purchases to make on your quest to delve deeper into the mystical magical realms. A few key notes: 1) Many of these titles and collected editions are sold on Amazon Kindle store as well as direct from Black Library. 2) To date GW has been collecting all their short stories into collected edition publications, though this can be up to a year after their publication as a short story. 3) If I have made mistakes, or new publications/collected editions have come out please post in the thread to tell me and I will do my best to edit in the changes/new publications. Overread
My personal thoughts on the publications and good choices: The two Realmgate Wars Volumes present the most ideal way to buy into a bulk of the published early works on the Age of Sigmar. The combined edition of the two simply being the two volumes bought together (no added discount). This would be the cheapest way to get a bulk of the novels and a few collected short stories. Call of Chaos Quick Read Collection collects together the bulk of the Call of Chaos books and is another ideal collection to buy into for the early history and lore of the Realms. As mentioned above this plus Volume 1 of the Realmgate Wars is cheaper than getting the "Mighty Battles" collection. Legends of the Age of Sigmar: Omnibus 1 presents a similar ideal buying option to get a selection of faction focused stories. I'd also note that its listing as Omnibus 1 suggests that GW will release more such publications at a latter date. These might include collections of other race specific short stories (such as those appearing now for Idoneth in the short story listing) Hammerhal & Other Stories has a bit of cross over with some other recommended collections, however it also has a few others and its own unique short story; making it a good solid choice to purchase. Overread
A new release! Sacrosanct & Other Stories GW continues its oddly messy collected edition habit with this newest collected book. For some reason they are convinced that the best way to release AoS collected editions is to give a smattering of stories that are repeated over and over. A somewhat annoying pattern, esp since Unique stories to this book: Sacrosanct, Shiprats by C L WernerA Dirge of Dust and Steel by Josh Reynolds Stories collected (thus far) only in this book: The Dance of the Skulls by David AnnandaleThe Sands of Grief by Guy Haley Auction of Blood by Josh ReynoldsCallis & Toll: The Old Ways by Nick Horth Stories repeated in other collected edition: The Witch Takers by C L Werner (Gods and Mortals)The Prisoner of the Black Sun by Josh Reynolds (Hammerhal & Other)Wrathspring by Andy Clark (Sylvaneth, Legends of the Age of Sigmar: Omnibus 1)The Volturung Road by Guy Haley (Fyreslayers, Legends of the Age of Sigmar: Omnibus 1)Great Red by David Guymer (The Realmgate Wars: Volume 2) Also keep an eye out in the new year for Gods and Mortals out next January which appears to be far more exciting with a larger number of new short stories (currently not released on their own), several new to collection already released short stories and only a smaller number of repeated short stories (collected in other books). Throt the Unclean
Thank you for writing all of this, it's incredible. I followed this post and hope you regularly update it. It desperately needs to be stickied permanently at the top of forum. (edit: I guess it's already stickied inside another sticky. Good enough. lol) I've been trying to get into all the AoS Black Library books, short stories, audio books, and audio dramas through kindle/audible and have made so many dumb and needless purchases. This has really helped me through the maze. The detailed break down of every story and the books in which they appear is invaluable. I only wish I had found it sooner. The Black Library is so complicated and confusing. Trying to make sense of all of their offerings has made my head spin. Their website is terrible. It's not organized at all. It doesn't even list all of their offerings, unless you know the specific name of some stories and use the site's search bar or google you won't see it. The website doesn't even have a general timeline that shows where everything they sell (or have sold) lands to help people follow the story or know what to read next. It's absurd and very frustrating. Why couldn't GW have a guide like yours? The cynical part of me thinks GW does this on purpose to maximize profits somehow. Anyways, it would be great if you could add a section that summarizes which books you need to have every AoS story (novel, short story, etc.) with the fewest purchases possible, even if that might mean having books which contain the same short stories or books they no longer sell. I know that's what your posts are doing in essence, there are just a lot of individual stories to keep track of. So a dumbed-down (few details or just book titles) section would be awesome. I guess with warnings of current offerings that are likely to be in future collected works books, because from what I can tell, most books and stories will eventually be put into an omnibus or collected works book anyways. And also, maybe a section doing the same with the audio dramas and books they sell. Edited November 24, 2018 by Throt the Unclean
Overread
@Throt the Unclean my thanks indeed! Like you I found the BL website a messy listing (esp for AoS) which was what prompted me to sit down and write all this out! For some reason with AoS they keep releasing a fair few of the short stories in multiple collected editions, which makes it a bit of a pain because it means that you will likely end up with repeats. In general short stories are often not worth getting from BL unless you really only want one or two or want to read them right as they are released. Most end up in a collected edition which will often have one or two stories unique to the book itself. It's messy, but hopefully GW is only doing it now because they don't have all that much lore and it should clean up on its own in time. I would love to make a time-line post, but that's nightmarishly tricky and the best I might be able to come up with is a publication date list; since GW doesn't have a dating system for their stories so its very trick to tell what comes before or after what sometimes. Some stories are clearly from the very beginning of the Age when the Stormcast are first retaking Realmgates; others are clearly many generations later set in cities rebuilt from the devastation of the Chaos Age. Throt the Unclean
@Overread Okay, thanks again. I'll just focus on the novels and ignore short stories unless they are part of a collected works book. This is how I've made sense of what GW seems to be doing with their novels, you have to look at the novel's cover and price on the BL website and guess whether it will be a one-off, part of a series, or part of an event. Does this seem like an accurate way to organize them? One-offs: Fine to purchase now. The novel probably won't be part of a series or related to an event and therefore won't be in a collected works book. Neferata Mortarch of Blood The Tainted Heart Overlords of the Iron Dragon Nagash the Undying King Series: Could be best to hold off. There's a high chance the novel will be in a collected works book if it isn't already. Callis and Toll: The Silver Shard Eight Lamentations: Spear of Shadows Hallowed Knights: Plague Garden Black Pyramid Legends of AoS: City of Secrets Black Rift Skaven Pestilens Fyreslayers Sylvaneth Gurtek Gurnisson: Realmslayer Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower: Labyrinth of the Lost Events: Wait until the next major event to even consider buying. The novel will definitely be in a collected works book. Realmgate Wars: finished Gates of Azyr Warstorm Ghal Maraz Hammers of Sigmar Call of Archaon Wardens of the Everqueen Warbeast Fury of Gork Bladestorm Mortatch of Night Lord of Undeath Soul Wars: ongoing Soul Wars Could this organization apply to the short stories as well? Also, I've only read Fyreslayers (series), which was a collection of short stories and Gates of Azyre (event), which was a 3 hour mini-novel. Are all series novels just collections of short stories? Are all event novels just mini-novels? Are the only true, 10+ hour novels the one-offs? Overread
It's impossible to say. BL has a kind of scattergun approach to some things. Some are marketed as clear short or long series; other times they are clearly experimenting with characters and if one proves popular they will likely continue with them. So some might appear totally one-offs, but they get a good reception and call in the market and later BL produces more. Other times something might appear to be setting something up, but nothing ever comes of it with further stories. Also don't forget that the new Novellas aren't yet listed, those are half way between short and full novels and are nice stories that fit into building and fleshing out the world. There's also the short stories in Inferno

Other stories of the series are Callis & Toll: The Old Ways by Nick Horth like @Overread said and as part of a sidestory the Novella "Heart of Winter", the story of Arika Zenthe after "The Silver Shard" ended. I also had made a list for the stories, including the german translations (but only the published books, not ebook only content). robinlvalentine
What's the correct reading order for Callis & Toll? Is it City Of Secrets > The Old Ways > The Silver Shard? And can anyone offer any opinions on either of the collections The Old Ways is found in? So far I've just got City Of Secrets, but I'm really enjoying what I've read
JPjr
Just finished Inferno 2 and Warqueen... I have to ask is it in Black Library writers' contracts that every single AoS story must involve the protagonists being dumped in one, if not more, kind of gladiatorial fighting pit? JPjr
it's a mixed bag as most anthologies are but an easy read, think I barrelled through it in 2 nights. Only 1 (40k as it happens) story that I really got bored of and that's because it just felt like 50 pages of describing people being knifed or shot in increasingly dull ways. One that actually answered something about Sylvaneth (or at least related creatures) that I'd actually wondered about before and had thought could be a good extension to the model range so that was interesting and a couple of nice creepy 40K stories (which makes me look forward to the upcoming horror proper books). So yeah pit fighting escapades aside it's a quick, fun page turner. Just finished Plague Garden this morning, so annoyingly now I want to read Black Pyramid but I'll probably wait for the paperback and throw myself into some non sword & sorcery fiction to cleanse my palette for the rest of the month. It is Arika Zenthes sequel after The Silver Shard. Edit: @JPjr Hm, I have ignored the inferno books until now. Can you tell me which stories (the titels) are AoS Related. Overread
The Original Infernos are very different to the new in several ways: Old Inferno are from the earlier days and have stories from 40K, Bloodbowl, Necromunda and Old World Fantasy. It also has artwork, cut aways, info slips, comic strips (one of and some longer term). A general mish mash of media and lore produced by the GW team. It was the place where some long term stories appeared (eg Gotrek and Felix and the Gaunts Ghosts) as well as one off adventures and the like. This is going way back to some of the most early stuff that GW made and even before they had a formal "Black Library" division. There is somewhere in the region of 40 issues and GW is re-releasing them in blocks of 5 at around £5 a book. Which is about what I see them going for second hand on ebay (or thereabouts). The New Inferno (of which there are 2 issues published now) are only short story collections and feature the current worlds which are basically the same as the old, save that there is now Age of Sigmar instead of the Old World fantasy stories. Part of the reason that the new inferno is only stories is because today BL and GW have more outlets - they've got dedicated comic strip pages; dedicate art websites and products and the like. So there's no need to squeeze it all together.

It is Arika Zenthes sequel after The Silver Shard. Edit: @JPjr Hm, I have ignored the inferno books until now. Can you tell me which stories (the titels) are AoS Related. So I can put them into my List. (the Print on Demand stuff is most likely older. Am I right). Thanks for this When you say both stories are in the same book, what do you mean? That City Of Secrets is included in The Silver Shard? Will be annoyed with Black Library if so as I've just bought City Of Secrets separately! As for AoS in Inferno 2 we have the following... Guy Haley - At The Sign of the Brazen Claw: Part Two - The Merchant's Story Jaine Fenn - From The Deep Robert Charles - Faith In Thunder Jamie Crisalli - Ties Of Blood C L Werner - No Honour Among Vermin Thanks. They should have really grouped them by a themes. I actually haven't thought hat "At The Sign of the Brazen Claw" would have been an Age of Sigmar Titel. I have thought about Blazen Claws of 40k 🤔 The only one of the first book I have pot into the list is "At The Sign of the Brazen Claw" The only story I would see as an AoS story there is "the Path to Glory" but anything else could be everything (even Warhammer Chronicles) 1 hour ago, Overread said: The New Inferno (of which there are 2 issues published now) are only short story collections and feature the current worlds which are basically the same as the old, save that there is now Age of Sigmar instead of the Old World fantasy stories. I think it will be interesting to see which stories will be republished in other books. And there will be a volumn 3 in May 2019. 48 minutes ago, robinlvalentine said: Thanks for this When you say both stories are in the same book, what do you mean? Yes, City of Secrets was painted into the book The Silvershard. I found it out in november, but I think, I had bought The City of Secrets before the Silvershard was released. But it can be worse. The Stories "The Prisoner of the Black Sun" and "Great Red" are printed 4 times. Mortarch of Night (The Realmgate Wars Book 9) The Realmgate Wars Volume 2 Hammerhal & other Stories Sacrocanct & other Stories Okay "The Realmgate Wars Volume 2" is a collection where Mortarch of Night is included, but still, they released the same stories in four books. Going to send Black Library a disgruntled email tonight, that's not mentioned anywhere on the website, really feel like I should get my £10 back. Thanks for letting me know! Overread
For some unfathomable reason BL keeps reprinting a lot of short stories into collected editions for AoS. They don't really do this for Chronicles and the old Warhammer line at all and where there are reprints its often cases like the new Inferno Print on Demand - where they are reprinting an old out-of-print book that had some of its stories printed later in newer inprint publications. AoS hasn't got any of that, but for some reason they keep copycatting them along. It reduces my desire to buy new complition books from them when half of the book is already in another book I own.

So "Warhammer Chronicles" is not Old World Warhammer? When looking at Gotrek & Felix it is. In the end I never had bought a single WHFB Novel after reading 40k Novellas most of the time (so it wouldn't be a problem in that case. 3 hours ago, robinlvalentine said: WTF! Yeah, they messed up the Description, not mentioning that City of Secrets is in their. In the end, this was the way I found it out (it is the german book): In the end it was a good thing for me, that the Book was included, because it was the first time City of Secrets was translated into german. But after I had seen the case with The Prisoner of the Black Sun I thought I make my Google Excel Sheet that I linked in this post: Edited January 11, 2019 by EMMachine

Yes GW is reprinting them and they are collecting a lot into collected editions now, but many of the short stories are only sold in those or separately. Granted some are appearing again in things ilke the Inferno reprints, but those are short term products and out of print otherwise. In contrast AoS has many short stories that are already copied through two or three separate collected editions and where those shorts are also sold online on their own as well. To me it makes it look like GW are desperate in trying to boost page counts at the cost of repeated content in books published very close together. Eg Sacrosanct and Gods and Mortals both share 3 of the same short stories and they are published quite close together.
