AoS 2 - Bretonnia Discussion

Recommended Posts

Another victory for Bretonnia, against Daemons of Khorne. :D

Also got news back from Adepticon. I am allowed to use Knights Bretonnia as long as all other rules are followed and they do not have the "legend" keyword. So huzzah!

Turn 4 saw the Bretonnian s get a double turn where the Lord and the Grail Knights return charge the crushers, and then into the Bloodthrister blowing him apart in one decisive charge! The battle was pretty over by then but Khorne got his revenge by smashing my general with a brass skull and then having the blood letter finish the job. By he time it was over, only my realm knights champion (Sir Rivière), the damsel and Enchantress (Lady Adelaide and Lady Mathilde), and half the unit of Grail Knights.

Now I've been experimenting with a new alliegence ability with my Bretonnians that helps our guys make sense. Instead of using the re-roll from Grand Alliance, I've been using the following:

Lance Formation - Few foes can withstand a charge from full lance of Bretonnian knights. Friendly units with the NOBILITY keyword that contain 5 or more models may re-roll unmodified wound rolls of 1 if it made a successful charge in the same turn.

It's not much but it gives the knights a bit more punch on the charge (as they should have in my opinion) and let's the unit banners and noble standard bearer not conflict with Defiant Avengers ability.

Love to hear about your lore, narrative ideas and names for your characters. Would also be cool to hear more about your campaign once it gets going :)

Also: nice to see some ideas about extra rules for Bretonnia. If you were part of the discussion in another thread here on TGA about a Bretonnia Battletome, then do feel free to share any insights with the rest of us.

@Drakilian I am getting hyped up for Bretonnian chivalry at Adepticon. Gonna hope for some epic coverage on your part once that goes down!

I've had a look over on the Battletome project and they seem really far along with the idea. It's got some cool ideas (I especially like the idea of favours) but I have decided to work mostly with the small allegiance ability mentioned before. I figured it is not too much of a change and with the release of Malign Portents, we have access to plenty of good artifacts and spells.

As to the lore, be careful what you wish for. ;)  As part of a writing project with my elementary class, I have been writing the lore for my army and how the start of the campaign. Without going into the insane detail, my Bretonnians are descendants of those that populated Lileath's haven as the End Times descended on the Old World because of the waxing power of chaos, the Haven was lost to her vision and cast aside into the void with the world's destruction. After countless millennia adrift, the souls of these Bretonnian heroes eventually came to rest in Ghyran where they slumbered until found by Alarielle during the Age of Myth. Upon their resurrection, the new knights of Bretonnia have come to worship the Everqueen as the reincarnation of the Lady, pledging their sword and lance to her service, this time with clear eyes and a willing heart. Within several generations a fledgling nation of people had made their home within the lands of Ghyran, cultivating the worship of the Lady Alarielle and strengthening their ties with the Sylvaneth (albeit with a healthy dose of superstition and fear as the children of their goddess)

The coming of the Age of Chaos threatened to to bring the new nation to ruin and were it not for the guidance of her prophetess' it surely would have been. Not wishing to be resigned to the annuals of history once again, the Bretonnians sought out powerful enchantments and traps, much like the ones Alarielle used to escape the sight of Chaos, to ensure their homes were protected in the age of war that was to come. Whilst numerically outnumbered, the Bretonnians made use of their superior speed to strike back against the hordes of Nurgle, often attacking the flanks and rear, retreating before the main battle force could be brought to bear. Although the Bretonnians managed to inflict a number of wounds on the forces of Chaos, it only served to slow their hunt for the Everqueen.

With the coming of Sigmar's chosen warriors and the rebirth of their Lady as a glorious queen of war, a new hope has sprung in the people. No longer consigned to ambushes and harassment tactics, the knights find their ranks swelled with errants eager to prove their worth to the Lady and peasants offering up their arms. Although Nurgle still holds sway over much of the Realm of Life, its inhabitants are on the march with divine vengeance in their eyes.

@oscisi I will attempt to record it as best I can. May have to get a go pro for camera work. Not video. As my phone will not last the day and I will need it for the app.

I will bring my armor and if I feel I can get away with it solo. I will attempt to wear it. But again will take my health and safety over lookin awesome.

I feel bretonnia will return in AoS, due to the lore of the end times. However it will be Bretonnia in spirit.... most likely because the Grail Knights turned into "demi gods." We will be looking at a more... catholic/medevil version of the stormcast. Rather then the roman feel of the stormcast.

It wont be the same. But it will be in spirit. However... my other less holy and blessed army may be getting a update first... silly Slaanesh.

@Pellynor that was an awesome read! I actually enjoyed this more than reading battle reports. It sounds like you definitely have enough of a story hammered out to build a really cool narrative campaign. I am not worried about what I wished for at all ;) Keep it coming!

I approve of the first two parts one hundred percent.  If GW do decide to bring the Knights back, they will most definitely be thinking of you when they do so.

I’ve always thought that Stormcast Eternals already are the majority of the Bretonnians, since Sigmar requires pure souls of heroes, and Bretonnian Knights are basically the epitome of just that. What do you guys think of the odds of GW ever releasing a new line of Free People models and somehow blessing us with Knights that don’t look overly German?

Ho boy do I ever hear you there. I do historical re-enactment (Norman era) and if it's not balanced out properly, it is murder!  Out of curiosity, what do you have for a rig? I saw in an earlier post you said it was about 80lbs. I've had to wear mine for a couple of days straight for a festival so if you want to swap armour tips, I'd be happy to do so :)

Until the last few years, I would have said not bloody likely. Yet in the last couple of years we've seen genestealer cults become their own thing, plastic sisters, and even a squat! I think if the community continues to show it love then they might revisit their decision. Of course keeping their presence up in tournaments, battle reports, and repeatedly sending in e-mails/Facebook messages certainly doesn't hurt ;)

@oscisi If you read through the end times which start around 2519 with the Twin-Tailed Comet, numerous things happened with Bretonnia. Also remember the Lady of the Lake is Lileath the Elven Goddess of Prophecy. She fortold the end times, and sought out a kingdom she could shape to save humanity, hense the creation of Bretonnia, the Grail, and her Grail Knights. In so.... history:

   - 2521 Mallobaude the Serpent goes into a Civil War with King Louen Leoncoeur.

   - 2522 The Battle at Quenelles. Mallobaude's army of Rebels and Undead beseige Quenelles, which is defended by Loyalists and Wood Elves. He "kills," King Louen and the Fey Enchantress (Morgiana le Fay) is kidnapped by Drycha the Branchwraith and brought to Mannfred von Carstein.

   - 2522 The Green Knight reveals himself to be Gilles le Breton, and slays Mallobaude before he can crown himself king. He takes up the crown of Bretonnia and leads its people.

   - 2523 The Battle at La Maisontaal.  Arkhan travels to Bretonnia to join Heinrich Kemmler, where he obtains the Staff of Nagash and destroys Kemmler after his betrayal.

   - 2524 The Battle at nine Daemons. The Fey Enchantress is sacrificed in the ritual used to bring forth Nagash. Along with Aliathra and Volkmar.

   - 2524? The Lady of the Lake (otherwise known as Lileath the Elven godess of Prophecy) and other elven gods/mortals go to Nurlge's gardens and save Shallya by well putting a mortal priestess in her place.

   - 2524? Louen Leoncoeur is revealed to be alive, though not King anymore he is still a duke. He raises his armies to answer the call of Kurt Helberg and heads to Altdorf.

   - 2525 The Fall of Altdorf.  Lots of ****** happens here, but basically Louen rides in like the Rohirrim. Then he leads his Pegasus knights in while he rides his Hippogryph to the Temple of Shallya. Loun slays.... SLAYS... as in kill kills, not just kills and sends back to warp, the Greater Unclean one named Ku'gath. However Luon is then slayed by Festus. Vlad then slays Festus,  but not kill kill.

   - 2525+  While a lot happens here the most important to Bretonnia is that.

         - Lileath (Lady) reveals to her lover Araloth that she cannot save the world no longer, so she has invoked a new plan. The world has had this endless cycle, countlessly dying and being reborn. A creator gives life to the barren world, the family quarrels, culminating in a tilt in balance and allowing chaos to spill over. Beginning a new. Asuryan has created this world, and thus she planned for her Daughter and Araloth to create the new one. And her guardians (grail knights) shall protect them.

         - Abhorash, the first Vampire ever. Bends his knee to Gilles and pledges servcee out of deep respect, (as well as the fact that back when Gilles and the Grail Companions where liberating Bretonnia from Orcs, they fought a duel, Gilles won) and fights to the end of the end times with the First King of Bretonnia... oddly... undead and bretonnia fighting side by side. Even after the Empire fell, these two fought together to the bitter end of Bretonnia. (Hense why people believe the Flesh Eater Courts are partly Bretonnian. But, no... Flesh Eater Court is basical whats left of the Vampire Courts).

         - With that in mind, Lileath ascends both Gilles and Loun to "god-hood" and basically makes the Grail Knights into their "demi-god" battle angels. With that, both Gilles and Loun escort what they can of Bretonnia into the realm called "Haven."

         - The Lady bestows her powers and title to her Daughter, and puts her in this realm. "Haven," a realm described as being innocent of Chaos, untouchable by the four gods. She sends her lover Araloth there.

         - Lileath then plans to sacrifice the elves, and their gods, in order to make chaos weak so she can begin the new cycle and those within Haven can start a new Cycle, but with the knowledge needed to prevent another End Times.

         - About half of what is left of Bretonnia make it to "Haven," the rest are sadily... left behind for the many to fend for themselves. Most of it was volunteers to hold the line while other escaped, and in so end up being consumed by chaos.

         - Be'lokar finds a trapped Mannfred who, to get his freedom and safety from Chaos, trades the knowledge of Lileath's plan for it. Be'lokar finds her, and destroys her ability to begin the new Warhammer Cycle, causing the events that lead to Age of Sigmar instead. Lilieath dies in the final battles, sacrificed by Teclis.

So what does this entail? The new cycle never got started. So half of bretonnia, the grail knights, Gilles, Loun, the Lady's Daughter (now the Lady), and Araloth. Are all sitting in a realm called "Haven," that could not be touched by chaos. They are awaiting the new cycle to begin...

But the new cycle has never begun? Does that mean... will they come out to attempt to make a new better world? Will they ride out to assist Sigmar? Do they even know what is going on in the realms? So many possibilities GW has here for both lore and a entire new model line/army.

As for Lileath the orgininal Lady of the Lake... is dead. She requested to be killed, she was sacrificed by Teclis (with help from Karl Franz, aka Sigmar, and Arkhan the Black) and he used her power to teleport him and the remaining forces to Middenheim....

If she is still alive... she is most likely in Slaanesh's stomach. But more then likely the Original Lady of the Lake... is perished.

Also currently scheduleing my return to Canada for a grudge rematch of MWG.

When are you thinking of coming up? I'm about 3 hours north of Welland and if it's over the March Break then we could try and convince them to do a doubles match. I think Josh would be down and Luka or Collen for sure.

@Pellynor It will most likely be in the May/June time frame as I won't have free time until then. When I get a date set up I will sure drop it here so others will know when Bretonnia goes to get its rematch.

Guys, I have to say that I love the direction this discussion has taken :)

Sure, battlereports and optimizing lists can be fun, but I enjoy lore and armor talk way more! I agree with @Pellynor that the turn GW has taken the last 12 months is very promising. And a big thank you to @Drakilian for the Old World update. Never had the time to read those. All I know is from wiki articles.

I encourage you both to bring even more attention to Bretonnia through MWG! Awesome stuff

I will update on my armor rig for you @Pellynor later tonight after my evening shift.

Also sending in my next (small wave) of Bretonnia in to White Metal Games to get them painted for me, so they match my comission with them earlier. Whats getting painted is small so it can be ready for adepticon.

 - Bretonnian Damsel on Pegasus

 - Bretonnian Grail Knights (5) (Being painted to match the first Squad of 5 Grail Knights)

Will add pictures of them when their complete. Also does anyone want pictures of the army tha tI took to MWG, I know there was a painter partner program video from MWG, but I believe I still have the link to the photo album the commission crew did of the models.

Have any of you found any Order battalions that work with Bretonninans well?

What type of Batallions were you thinking of? I guess you could bring a small Batallion or any order faction and then have a few Bretonnia units join them. But since I play strictly with Bretonnian units I’m not aware of a single one that is legal to use. This, and the ridiculously high point costs, are the main reasons why Bretonnia is in such dire need of an update.

Nevertheless, by the Lady, I will keep trying to make them work! ;)

I will work on posting the images later tonight.

Had to take a soft hiatus for life stuff there for a moment but update on the adventures of my Bretonnians:

I will be going to Adepticon with them, sadly I will not be in garb. Due to the timing of Adepticon and my orders and school, I will be flying up Friday night, leaving Sunday night. I would prefer to do carry on only, and already trying to explain a case full of miniatures to TSA is a feat in itself. However Bretonnia will be making it's attempt at a spot light in that tournament. Will work on updating here as the event happens. As well as pictures and documentation.

The Week of May 20th I will be visiting Miniwargaming for a full week. Where my Host of Slaanesh and Bretonnia will be facing off against them. Bretonnia will be returning for revenge, with updates to the list and what I learn from Adepticon vrs local tournament scene.

Trying to devise a way to transport my Bretonnia on the plane trip and tournament. The entire army is magnetized and the bases are weighted. I am going to be doing carry on, probably going to store them under the seat. Something that can fit around 35 60 x 35mm base models, 2 70 x 45mm models, 1 60mm model, and 13 25mm models. If anyone has some ideas or experience please let me know. I have looked into brownie trays, but they are a little small and the lids aren't high enough as the lances are pointy and tall. That and taking a metal tray through TSA will be annoying.

Also if you have any ideas for a display case I could carry around the tournament to show them off, not something super drastic as I need to transport it. As well as have to make it in under a months time. But ideas would be nifty.

Hey Folks, this is my first post here. I found this thread searching Google in hopes that there might be a few souls somewhere that are playing AoS with Bretonnia so I could see how they are faring with that endeavor.

I've recently started to give AoS a try, having been very bitter that Fantasy was killed; I really loved that game. I bought a few Stormcast Eternals models but I'm not really digging that army. None of the armies really speak to me. So I'm wanting to give Bretonnia a try, the one army I've always loved more than any other. Here's my question though:

Do you feel your army is totally out of place when you play? Do you feel your opponents want you to play one of the current/supported armies instead?

The new AoS world is so crazy and odd to me, I feel like Bretonnia has no place in it. But perhaps it could be fun to write some of my own narrative and lore to explain how there could possibly still be a contingent of Bretonnia out there.

Thanks! It warms my heart to see the passion and dedication to Bretonnia you guys have displayed here :)

Hi and welcome to Age of Sigmar.

There are two sides to your question, first the background, or does Bretonnia fit into the Realms?

To make it short, yes. Bretonnia fits into the realms. The mortal realms are huge and diverse. Some regions are high-fantasy with flying islands and rivers made of liquid metal, while others are more grounded and not much different from the world that was. Its definitely in the realm of possibility that some Bretonnians survived the End Times and brought their culture and traditions into this new world. In fact, there are a few examples of bretonnian culture in the realms.

For example, there are a few knightly orders from the Jade Kingdoms in Ghyran that serve Alarielle (who is the closest thing to the original Lady of the Lake in this world), they kept the old bretonnian traditions of honor and chivalry. Main difference is their equipment. They don't use steel weapons or armor, instead all their equipment is made of a special kind of wood that has similar characteristics as steel (for more, read the Novel "Spear of Shadows" or the short story "Tainted Axe" both featuring Ser Roggen).

Another example is the Order of the Fly. A Nurgle corrupted version of the Bretonnian Knights. They still follow a (twisted) code of honor and serve a lady carrying a special grail (the Lady of Cankerwall). You can read about them in "Nagash Undying King" and again "Tainted Axe".

And lastly, Flesh-Eater courts. These twisted ghouls and vampires are the closest thing reflecting the serfs/nobility contrast in the mortal realms. The Ghoul Kings are completely delusion, seeing themselves as wise kings ruling over proud kingdoms. Knights in shining armor fighting side by side with brave peasants. To be fair, this is all in their mind but this faction comes close to the darker aspects of the bretonnian society. Also, you can find fleur-de-lis all over their models.

Now the second part, how they play on the table. The Warhammer Legends rules allows you to keep playing with all your old models. But these rules haven't really been touched since the launch of the first Generals Handbook. The games has evolved massively since then and more and more things have been added to newer factions. Bretonnians lack allegiance abilities, warlord traits, artefacts, endless spells and army specific terrain. Now, this doesnt mean that you will always lose against newer armies, its just that you will have less things to play around with.

@AdenIts the Leon Model. The old pewter version if him came with a helm or his head as a choice. So you could run Leon or a standard Lord on Hippogryph back in fantasy.

@PigRaven With how the end times ended. Abouy half of Brettonia and all of the Grail Knights (turned into battle angels), the Green Knight (turned god), Leon (turned god), and the Lady of the Lake's Daughter along with the Lady's elven god lover, where all sealed in a realm called Haven. You can see the gist in a earlier post of mine. This realm was innocent of chaos, and would shield them from the end times. So that they could come out into the new world and save it.

The other half of Brettonia got eaten by the undead and nurgle or just survived the end times. So as @Gecktron said, there are hints of them existing in other factions.

However with the Haven realm... GW has a great opening to return bretonnia to AoS. While it wont be the same. It will be great to have a true blue knights/calvary army again.

As current rules for Brettonia arnt... bad.... their not great. They where last updated in June. The King is 400pts.... does almost everything  Freeguild general does..... but costs 200pts more. A Greater Unclean One is cheaper then the king. That being so I have a 70% win rate with them so far. I am also taking them to adepticon and will record my triumps and failures.

You will have to use the grand alliance allegiance for order. Which is practically useless if you have a king. The command traits are meh...artifacts are okay.

While you dont get Bretonnian style endless spells. You can use the standard endless spells.

However this is also a bonus. As bretonnia is under the "order" allegiance. Anything not in a battletome is not considered ally to you so you can take more allies then a new army can. I personally like Archmage and Battlemage (Amber).

What I have seen of bretonnia is they do well against single wound models and armies with swarms. They are also dependent on strategy, synergy, and their spells. When I loose a game it is usually because I didn't get the spells out that I needed.

Hope this helps.

Also @PigRaven and @Gecktron the legends rules only apply to named characters and cant be used in match play games. Another major issue is their keywords do not match up with Bretonnia keywords from their warscoll. Legends and such are only allowed in open play and if you opponnent agrees to it.

Here is the link to the official currently bland AoS rules for Bretonnia.

my comissioned army of Bretonnia

Dude, that's incredible. I'm about to start a small Brets force, and that's some awesome inspiration. Stunning.

Thank you. But the painters where White Metal Games. As a military guy I have barely any free time to paint and my Slaanesh absorbs all of that. So for my christmas present I got my brets all painted up and comissioned.

I gave White Metal Games full artistic freedom for my army. They went for a mix of Brettonia and old Tuetonic knights. (They used to have blue-gray before the white). I love em.

Hi Guys! Keep this thread alive.

I’m going to a local tournament next month of 1250 varanguard. Up till now i’ve played seraphon, but just wanted to give my old bretts one more chance.

I’ve spend the last months painting the Knights and rebashing the whole army. The old king, MAA and Enchantress I just left it the way I painted it as a child. For nostalgic reasons.

I’ve won most of my practice games so far. With the King being an absolute hero/monster killer with Sword of judgement as item. When played right is an easy 3-4 d6 mortal wounds.

Below are some pics. Hope I wont forget to take some pictures at the tournament. Will keep you posted if you want to.

For the Lady!
