Vetrfreki Alfrostun: The Winter Wolves (Beastclaw Raiders Plog)

Frostlord Ótambær sat astride his Stonehorn, the cold whisper of the Everwinter everpresent on his mind. Ahead lay conflict and violence, war and ruin. Many thought the Raiders were cold, unthinking beings, little more than ravenous beasts. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. They prided themselves on honour and power, challenging themselves to ever greater feats of martial strength.

Ótambær embodied this nobility. He was a warrior borne from the most steadfast lineage, a proud follower of the Great Predator. But his was not a story of glory, but of tragedy. Almost a century ago, he and his Alfrostun had struck a bargain with Sigmar. Their people, the wives and children, would be free from the clutches of the Everwinter, allowed to settle in the cold regions of Azyr. Once a year the Vetefreki would be allowed to return home, to see their people and their lands untouched by the Everwinter, to father new songs and sing new songs. On this day, the Gull-Vetrar, the Golden Winter, they would know piece.

In exchange, the Vetrfreki warriors would take on an even greater curse, to further the Golden Gods goals. Ótambær and his warriors would roam the realms, hunting the denizens of chaos and destroying their corruption wherever they dwelt. No mortal food could satiate their hunger, only beings borne from chaos would fulfill them.

And yet, the Vetrfreki were viewed as legends by their people. Ogors far and wide would come to join their ranks, to be a part of the Alfrostun that beat the Everwinter. Their city grew ever larger, expanding until the city of Ríkfirjalís was a bastion for Ogors.

Ótambær had lived a long life, and had won many battles. His hall was filled with trophies, his name sung in great ballads across the realms and his sons were mighty warriors all. But a great sorrow had settled in him, biting deeper than any cold. Decades ago, his elska, his bride, had been killed in retaliation by Daemons. The red skinned cowards had ambushed her and tortured her for days, whispering her screams into Ótambær’s dreams. He had taken many brides since then, and all had bred him mighty sons who filled his belly with pride, but he knew he would never be at peace until the Daemon that had taken her life was his to he devoured. Skarbrand would fall.

Hey guys, so I finally got around to painting my Beastclaw Raiders and wanted to put a bit of backstory to them. I envision them as tragic, Norse like warriors, who live for the thrill of battle. Very little of where they come from is shown in their Battletome so I came up with my own take on their settlements and culture. I want to have them painted up before February, so hopefully this goes quickly.

I’ve started work on some allied in Ironguts, who are represented by Mantic ogres as they looked a little more feral. These three are Ótambær’s eldest sons, and they accompany him as his elite bodyguard. Frœken (the bald one), Garpir (the ponytail) and Vaskir (the dreadlocks) are all brave warriors, and will someday lead their own Alfrostuns. Frœken is the oldest and most serious of the three, whip Vaskir lives to fight and is somewhat of a berserker. Garpir views himself as a conqueror or settler at heart and wants to expand Ríkfirjalís into an empire.915AF264-7CC4-4B8B-863B-E164FCC8FE30.jpeg

I’ve also begun two giants who I got as a gift. I don’t know how often I’ll use them but I love the models. Their names are Berja (the horned one) and Lemja (the top knot). They were rescued from a Khornate sacrifice by Ótambær and have followed him ever since, the Azyrite magic infused in him also sleeping into their veins.

I have four Mournfangs, a Frostlord on Stonehorn (Ótambær) Thundertusk with two beast riders and four Frost Wolves (played as Sabers) also ready to be painted. Unsure what I should use for my last few hundred points, suggestions welcome!

Update #1

Character Fluff and Lore

Spoiler

Frœken stood on the bluffs edge, winter winds howling past him like icy daggers. The cold felt good in his beard, reminding him of home. His prey marched below, a huge convoy of brass and blood. The Bloodbound horde had been gathering in size, swelling in numbers as they neared their destination. Reavers frothed and raged, pursuing the small human convoy of refugees as they fled the wrath of Khorne. The Azyrite colony had made a beeline for a reclaimed realmgate, the outpost manned by a skeleton crew of Freeguild warriors. If the Bloodbound horde reached the outpost, the Azyrite's would be slaughtered. The God-King had dispatched The Vetrfreki to halt their advance, to break the frenzied berserkers over their knees and send them scurrying back to their blood-soaked realm.

Soon the war-time would come. Frœken breathed deeply of the calm, cool air, enjoying its fresh scent before it was corrupted by the coming slaughter. Unlike his brothers, Frœken had no love for war. He excelled in it, to be sure. He was the most skilled of his fathers commanders in open battle, and had a mind for combat. But his heart lay with his home. In the chilled winds and soft snow of Rikfirjallis. He longed to return home, and yet he could never abandon his father, or his brothers.

As if on cue, Garpir and Vaskir appeared from within the blizzard, striding towards the cliff's edge. Garpir was jovial, humming a tune as he greeted his brother. The middling of the three, Garpir was the least like their father, in the best way possible. He had a light heart, a good soul and an endless belly. The winters curse had settled softly in him. Vaskir on the other hand was a tide of controlled destruction, the winters rage barely contained within his bones. He yearned for combat, to spill the blood of his enemies and feast on the denizens of chaos. Vaskir had been there the night their mother was taken, a new born pup. Even then he had fought, and been left for dead by the Daemon. He bore the scars earned in that fight with great shame. Frœken worried for his spirit, but Vaskir cared little for such things. He wished only for slaughter.

Soon he would get his wish.

"They movin' quick." Vaskir grunted as hunched down, observing them horde like a stalking wolf. Garpir nodded in acknowledgement. "Khorne's fires drivin' em on. They'll reach the squishies by dawn."

"And that cannot happen. Garpir, take the Eurlbad and take them from the flank. We'll  drive them into the cliffs. Vaskir, meet them head on. Break them." Frœken looked to his brothers, to confirm their acknowledgement. He bid them the traditional Vetrfreki farewell, pressing his nose to theirs, then set off to find his father. The Lord of Winter was needed.

So I've done some more painting and finished up my Ironguts. I really like the brothers and they've influenced how the army will be painted. I've also basically finished the Mournfang's riders, and will do some fluff writing on them as well. After this I think I'll do the wolves, then move on to the Thundertusk. I'm finding the giants to be a little difficult to paint, so I'll progress on them slowly as things go on. 26539991_1691171097628628_184512995_o.jpg.596db821101fbf494af2e47b0804a953.jpg

In my gaming group, we aren't super competitive. We each just get what models we think are cool and then fill out our points with cool infantry and stuff. So as it is, I just want to get the most diverse list I can, and with 2000 Points I'm looking at the following:

1 x Frostlord on Stonehorn, HQ

1 x Thundertusk w/Beastriders

4 x  Mournfangs

4 x Frost Sabers (wolf proxies)

1 x Aleguzzler Gargant (Allied)

3 x Ironguts (Allied)

That leaves me with 400 points to fill and I'm unsure of where to go from there. I was thinking of possibly converting an Arachnarok spider to be ridden by an Ogor and playing it as a counts as Stonehorn, then adding another pair of wolves. Kitting the spider out to be more winter would be cool, though I'll have to work out a way to fit an Ogor on top of it. Anyway, I'll save that for another post.

Here's the three brothers, all shaded and highlighted:

Update #2

Character Fluff and Lore

Spoiler

Vaskir caught the Blood Warriors frenzied swing and tore the warriors limb from his body. Spinning wildly, he lodged his frost swords blade deep into the chest of an approaching Khorgarath. The Vetrfreki's charge had broken the Khornate's line hours ago. The wolves of winter were now setting in for the kill. Ahead of him, Garpir roared fiercely, the Frost Wolves he had reared surrounding his enemy as they battled. Frœken waged war even further ahead, battling a Slaughterpriest atop a pile of bones.

As the battle raged, a huge shadow descended upon the melee. A bloodthirster had entered the fray. Seeing the daemon brought back strong memories in Vaskir, and he charged the monster, leaping over friend and foe. As his powerful jump rocketed towards the daemon, ice welled up behind him, bringing the force of winters rage down onto the beast. Perhaps this was the fight Vaskir sought...

Frustratingly little progress of late, but it is a busy time of year. My list has changed slightly, as I am no longer running the giants and have added another Stonehorn (represented by the Arachnarok model). Still I am happy with how they're looking. I'm thinking of adding a foot mounted elite as a Tyrant, either Golgfag or the Scibor Ogre chieftan. If anyone has experience with either model advice would be welcome! This model would maybe represent Ótambær, so a regal look is ideal. I am also thinking of adding Mantics hunter Ogre units to play as counts as Yhetees. We shall see...

I have basically finished my Wolves (sabers), and am happy with the look:

Update #3

Ogthorki fired his crossbow into the gullet of the Fleshhound attacking him, casting its carcass to the ground below. Handing the crossbow over to Fleki to reload, Ogthorki looked out over the battle. The Vetrfreki had begun the hard work of slaughtering he Bloodbound, eliminating all trace of their taint. The last of the Daemons had already been vanquished, their incorporeal forms proving vulnerable to the Vetrfreki's curse. They learned, as did all their Chaos spawned brethren, that the Ogors of Azyr were predators and masters of the hunt. Fleki interrupted Ogthorki's introspection by jabbing him in the leg. Looking down at the little Grot, Ogthorki smiled with bemusement. He had found the little one alone on the battlefield, the last of his clan left alive after they had challenged the Vetrfreki. A mistake, to be sure, but Ogthorki had taken pity on the Grot when he had seen the fierceness and courage that burned within his little belly. He had taken him on as a companion. The Vetrfreki didn't take slaves as a rule, so many times the Grot had fled, only to return when he realised he was lost. Eventually the two formed a tight bond formed over years of conflict and bloodshed, Fleki now proving an invaluable ally in combat as he reloaded Ogthorki's weapons or prevented the smaller foes from scaling Dynjagùth, his Thundertusk.

As if on cue, the might beast unleashed a huge icy blast on his approaching enemies, tearing them to pieces as he moved slowly forward. A calm and intelligent animal, Ogthori had raised him from a calf and fed him by hand. The bond between them was fierce and powerful, many enemies having fallen to their synchronised assaults. As Ogthorki fired another bolt into a mob of fleeing Reavers, he saw Vaskir moving into combat with a Bloodthirster. He ordered Dynjagùth forward, ready to defend his commander.

So going away to LA for two weeks, figure I won't get much done so posting what I've done up until now. I ordered the Scibor Ogre Chieftan (pictured at the bottom) and am finaly working on my big units. To start, I've begun work on the Thundertusk. He lost a rider (who has been moved to my Ice Spider) so I added a Grot sidekick. I wanted to go for a polar bear like look, with mixed results. Overall though I am very very very happy with him.

Current look.

This was my first bit of paint on him, a light grey with drybrushing added to it. Not much to look at but a solid base.

I did a nuln oil wash, then drybrushed with a blue wash followed by more white drybrushing. It gives the fur a layered look I feel. The armour scheme is hopefully uniform across the army, so they look as if they've been kitted out by the same people.

Update #4

Lore

Spoiler

Vaskir ducked underneath the Bloodthirster's huge axe, rolling forward and cleaving a chunk of flesh from the beasts leg. Hot blood sprayed his face and the bloodlust within him burned even brighter Spinning to face him, the daemon bellowed a mighty roar, drawing the attention of all nearby warriors. Vaskir returned the roar in challenge, blades gripped tight in his hands. Charging forward, he bulled into the daemons injured leg, driving it forward until it tipped over. Vaskir slashed out, cutting off one of its wings before burying his other sword deep into its gut. Before he could finish the Greater Daemon, a Skullcrusher hammered into his side, tumbling him over. Dazed and shell shocked from the impact, Vaskir struggled to his knees. His side bled from a wicked gash, and he had lost his remaining Ice Blade. Struggling to rise,  he was crushed back to the ground as the Bloodthirster planted its cloven hoof on his back. The Daemons foul scent filed his nose, and all seemed to go quiet.

He heard his mothers laughter, and felt the soft winds of Ríkfirjalís on his face. The soft chanting of the shamans filled his ears, and Vaskir closed his eyes, hoping his last thought would be of home. As he took what he thought would be his last breath, he heard a mewling yelp, and the weight left his back. Turning over, he saw Albjörn and his gigantic Frost Spider, Locke. The Bloodthirster's neck was caught firmly in Locke's fangs, but it wouldn't be held there for long. As if on cue, it renched itself free and kicked Locke backwards. As it advanced on the spider, Locked unleashed a gale of venomous frost, slowing the Daemons charge, but not stopping.

With the daemon slowly edging forward, Vaskir saw his chance. Darting forward, he picked up his dropped Ice Blade and leapt onto the daemons back. With a roar like an avalanche, he swung with all his might, beheading the daemon.

So, just got back from LA and started painting immediately, as two weeks with no hobby time hurt me. I basically started and finished my Frost Spider (counts as Thundertusk) all in one day, and I'm really really happy with the result.

27786836_1728794667199604_505309809_o.jpg.d240e867d6e8c0bbe64c3339c3a92f9b.jpg

It took a while and a few layers to work out the ideal mix, but I think its finished. I started with just a white base paint before going over the armoured bits with a blue glaze.

After that, I started doing some detailing and filled in the eyes, which are possibly the highlights of the model for me.

Following that, I did ore drybrushing and filled in the underarmour and fleshy bits off the spider, as well adding black to the spines and fangs, before more drybrushing.

I also did a more work on my Thundertusk, which is coming along smoothly. 27787370_1728796377199433_1465373041_o.jpg.1d260cee2c13484f15f3d67aca7c0ff4.jpg27835519_1728796747199396_1934019675_o.jpg.e7c81813f12e008e56929fed643bdf45.jpg

I was gutted to see such little response to the effort you put into this thread!

Love the colour of the weapons and that spider came out great. Nice work!

Hope you get plenty of wins with these.

Thank you so much for your kind words!

Yeah these are my favourite models I’ve done by far and hope to have some good games with them.

Fantastic looking army, great character to it, lots of varied beasts as Beastclaws should be.  The palette is good too, glad to see some grey ogres again, was one of my favourite things GW did with the Ogre Kingdoms Artwork.

On a side note, Avatars of war have just released a sabretooth tiger (in resin :) ) and I think it would look phenomenal in your army.

Thank you so much! I really tried to make them my own, but also hold true to their origin.

I’ll definitely check that out, I like a lot of their stuff. Thanks for the tip!

As everyone has said, great stuff!

making me think about getting my fantasy ogre project out and maybe switch out all the bases and finally put paint to them.

The spider is great, really like the wolves too.

Thanks very much man!

Yeah do it for sure, they’re a blast to paint and play.
