Welcome All

Thought I'd start with a brief background about me and Warhammer/AoS:

  • First taste of Warhammer Fantasy was around 1997
  • Always been a HUGE fan of the lore and the novels
  • Chaos has always been my favourite army (mortal armies in particular)
  • I have collected the books, novels and special characters for years - love the old chaos champions!
  • Never been involved in the scene, never owned , assembled, converted or painted an army (yes I am absolute theory boy)
  • Decided this year to build an army (FINALLY) & get involved in the scene along with my missus - managed to rope into it (Seraphon player)

So in this blog I will be documenting my journey to own a full army and hopefully go to some tournaments.

The Army

As mentioned, I have always been a follower of chaos, mainly Undivided but also Slaanesh, Tzeentch, Khorne and Nurgle (in that order, never been keen on the pus boys).

So with that I plan to start a Slaves To Darkness army.

I am going to theme it similarly to the Wendol in the "13th Warrior" film based on the "Eaters Of The Dead" book by Michael Crichton (granted its no Jurassic Park and definitely not the best film or book made, but it is one of my favourite films).  Basically the Wendol are cannibal savages in the Norse lands who live in caves, wear bear furs and ride to battle on horses.

The plan is to have the whole army mounted (obviously I am not creating a all conquering tournament force) and every model will be converted. This will be a SLOW process but hopefully will be entertaining and informative and through this blog my skill will grow from the advice of you more experienced folk. I have never done any conversions or modeling before but am a fashion designer and did art a lot at school and college so hopefully that will land me in good stead.

As mentioned previously, I will be creating this army at the same time as my missus is building a Seraphon army. We have purchased the Skirmish book and Path To Glory book so we will be growing our warbands whilst playing these with the aim to have a 2000 point force each at some point.

So i have finished the foundations of my first EVER conversion for my skirmish army. As this is my first ever model i just wanted to palay around with something and I will decide what to have it represent afterwards (wanted to see how hard converting is). I basically just played around with an idea I had to make a centaur (potentially to be used as a hellstrider, as I will most likely mark my Slaves To Darkness with Slaanesh). Also I thought it would be fun to have my Wendol army contain various monsters and beasts that they have captured/aligned  from the dark forests  surrounding their cave.

So here it is, let me know what you think:

I'll admit I prefered the conversion without the greenstuff head piece and boost to the tail. In any case it's an interesting theme for the army.

Thank you for you comment Lucio, the green headpiece will be dreadlocks and same with the tail. This was just a test model so may very well scrap that idea when I come to do the full unit.

Great job! I find the most important part to a conversion is to create a dynamic pose. And you succeeded magnificently in that. Looking forward to seeing them in a unit. Will you be basing them on rounds? It might be a bit more to invest in but the rounds also allow you more space to make your conversion on.

Thank you Kramer! yes i will 100% be basing them on rounds, I bought the horses on ebay and they were already based so I thought I would just leave them while I convert them and then re-base the at the end.

Smart choice! Especially when painting it really helps to have something you can grab onto without touching paint.

  • 1 year later...

Hi folks

Told you this would be slow

So as mentioned before, this is my first hobby foray into actually building an army. I am a huge theory person and need a good kick or raging fire to get to the next stage of actually doing something.

After pottering around here and there with various models I realised I needed to focus on a unit at a time. So I decided to start on the first unit of 5 chaos knights. I thought it best to get a full figure for all 5 then I will add the details and items afterwards enabling me (hopefully) to create cohesion whilst keeping each model unique.

PLEASE let me know any feedback and tips on technique. This is my first dive into modeling and (eventually) painting so any advice would be amazing.

This is stage 1: I have filed away all the straps and saddles on the horses (marauder horses), made each rider (marauder horsemen legs and Kairic Acolyte bodies). I am also trying thick thread for the reins so will see how that works. As mentioned I will be adding all manner of clothing and items to these moving forward:

Chaos knight

I want the army to have a very basic nomadic look which is why I removed the previous straps and saddles on the horses. I also found that an early version of horse’s reins were just wrapped around their bottom jaw so tried to replicate that with thick thread

These look great, I like the pared down barbarian style and I'm impressed by your skill with greenstuff, not sure about the thread coming from the horse's lower jaw but that's probably just because it's not something one usually sees.

Thank you Orsino! Yeah I did “um and ah” about it a while but thought I’d give it a go just to see if other materials could be used. I have also debated using hardened cloth under the riders instead of green stuff but decided against it. Am still considering using cloth for the banners (im a fashion designer so trying to combine fabric and minis lol) .....
