Troggoths

So it has been a while since I've looked at the game. I had been planning to do a Troll army before that and thinking of reviving the project for AOS28.

So I was looking around at these Troggoths that exist in AOS and was wondering are Chaos Trolls no longer a thing?

I see all the other troll types under Destruction but except for the old Compendium Warscrolls that have Throgg and Chaos Trolls I haven't seen them noted anywhere else.

I think they are forgeworld? I could be wrong

Indeed. There they are: https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-FR/Bile-Trolls

Their warscroll is in the Tamurkhan's Horde compendium: https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/resources/fw_site/fw_pdfs/aos_warscrolls/warhammer-aos-tamurkhans-horde.pdf

And finally their matched play points: https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/resources/fw_site/fw_pdfs/aos_warscrolls/aos_matched_play_points.pdf

What are people's thoughts on the competitiveness of the three troggoth types?

They all cost the same and perform the same basic function, though each has its own gimmick. The variations are basically:

Sourbreath: Whenever it suffers a wound that'd kill it, you get to ignore the wound on a 4+. Basically an additional save you only get to take once the troggoth is down to its last wound.

Rockgut: Has +1 to its save in comparison to the other troggoths. Also has a 6+ save-after-the-save against wounds/mortal wounds caused by spells.

Fellwater: Anyone targeting it in the combat phase has -1 to the Hit roll.

Personally I tend to favour the Fellwater over the others. The Rockgut's gimmick is a little too specialised and I haven't felt like the better save has really helped them survive longer. The Sourbreath I've never used so I can't really comment, but its gimmick doesn't seem like it'd contribute to the troggoth's durability very much unless you enjoyed some really hot dice.

The Fellwater's ability though is damn solid, mainly due to how modifiers work. Any ability that triggers on a 6 to hit is negated by it and such abilities are fairly common. Even leaving that aside, a flat -1 to hit adds much more to their durability than the other two "specialities".

The other thing to mention is, if you're sticking to official miniatures, Fellwater troggoths are the only ones in plastic and are the cheapest.

I've tested them once, against Beastclaw Raiders. They proved to be quite strong due to their regeneration ability. I plan on incorporating them into my army and occasionally running them as their own army with the Troll hag as the leader (A troll hag and one unit of each of the troll types adds up to 1,000 points).

Ooo what's a troll hag? I like the idea of an all troll army very cool

It's a fairly strong forgeworld model. You'll probably start to see her make appearances on people's lists now that allies are going to be a thing.

A troll army isn't legal in matched play because none of the trolls are battleline. But I don't imagine too many people outside of tournaments will care about that.

Then again, they have talked about adding in battleline to more of the smaller allegiances (especially conditional "Battleline if..."). Maybe Fellwater will become usable in that way.

Edit: Also, the Troll Hag is great fun and has a lot of troll flavor.  Hmm, troll flavor.... gross.

I just picked up 3 of the Stone Trolls(rockgut now or something) because I like the way those goofy ****** look. Was planning to add them to a mixed orc and goblins destruction army, but now with Allies, I might look at my options and build a "proper" army with a specific allegiance and add them as allies. Though realistically, I'm probably more likely expand my death and dwarf armies in the near term, so they'll probably get used mostly for Song of Blades and Heroes.
