The Winter Islands: Narrative painting log

RexHavoc

Recommended Posts

A wip painting log of things I'm working on for my narrative skirmish campaign. I've not had the time to do any more battle reports for it, but have still managed to work on several items (albeit rather slowly) for games we have planned later on.  A handful of these are older photos from my instagram, but I have a ton of new stuff I'm working on, but wanted to keep a record of everything I paint for narrative as a permanent record.

My battle report(s) can be found here:

--------------------------------------------

The Winter Islands:

Our narrative campaign is set on a group of islands that are all but cut off from the realms by huge oceans on all sides. Though many attempts to cross and navigate this have been made, none have ever succeeded, and up to the end of the realm gate war,  not only left these islands cut off from the realms but also making the islands location in the realms unknown.  Since the end of the realm gate wars however, Kharadron sky pirates have established several working gates, spread across the islands, finally allowing travel between the main realms and the islands.  The islands hold many connections to the world-that-was, returning many old ideas  and bringing them into the realms, not all of which are welcomed.

Skagrot's Bad moon Grots:

With the Orruks inability to prosper on the islands, the grot population exploded very quickly (the biggest threat to grots of course are being eaten, beaten or misplaced by orcs!) and allowed them to advance far quicker than their main realm counterparts. This has lead to two very distinct tribes being able to seize huge areas of control on the islands. The mountain and bad land Grots merged and became experts in the cog technology (as employed by the Empires freeguild engineers in their huge walking cities) and breeders of gargantuan wolves, whereas the moonclan grots advanced in mycology and the breeding of squigs.
Skagrot of the Bad moon clan, foresaw a future of green- but only if he could join the two tribes under one banner. With the combined forces of Bad moon and Mek Grots, the resulting wave of green could sweep over the islands and onwards to the realms, cleansing them of the taint of the filthy thin skins, the humans. Though Skagrot has the command of many of the Mek grots and their wolf riders, he must first fight many wars before he is proven himself capable to take full control of the
Mekanikan grots and with out their support he has no hope of over throwing the controlling bad moon shamans.

Oh my goodness, someone has painted snotlings in AoS! A rare sight! ?

Haha, yes, I'm surprised they are not more popular, they still fit in the game wonderful and it would be great too (finally) see a pump wagon made in a plastic kit with tons of customisation, I'm surprised not more people are asking for them! I still have another 20 or so bases left to paint up!

I finished a river troll for my skirmish warband just before armies on parade a couple of weeks ago, but sadly things got in the way of entering, but I do gain another bunch of fully painted models, so it's not like it was wasted time! My warband is not far off having a couple of completed, AoS sized units! I might have to make that final push to finish off another bunch of grots! I was pleased to finally paint the troll up though, he was brought, built and given a base about 20 years ago now and has sadly sat in his unfinished state since that day. I adore his snotling chum, who is clearly having a good laugh at 'the one that got away', but he needs to watch out, as laughing at a troll too much can leave you looking like lunch!
Also finished off a not very fancy or difficulty conversion of a mountain Grot and another base of snotlings. The mountain grot just needs to be pinned to the base as he's still on blutac (I was toying with doing a different basing style for the mountain grots, but decided against it as I want to be able to mix and match between them seamlessly)

I will probably go back and add another couple of layers of water effects to the trolls base, quite a bit of it managed to escape through a pin hole gap that formed after pouring. It looks ok, but one side it far higher than the other. I brought some much better tape and intend to at least even the level of the water out.

I painted a small wood elf warband up a while ago and now our terrain is almost finished and they have some enemies to fight , it's time they come out of storage. They desperately need some new members as the goblin warbands have exploded in size since this batch were finished.

449351498_WoodElves.jpg.f2d32b5638621e3505d03b4a0ddee38a.jpgIMG_20170526_120834.jpg.cb0af19d55c6820c24f6f0165095529d.jpgIMG_20170526_121050.jpg.c207e97c141798d7d7e830ab9e10ce60.jpg

I finished off the missing details on the wood elf archer and did some more work on his face. The dwarf was one of two test models that I made to test the colour schemes for my Kharadron sky pirates of Hashut. The other was in blood red instead of the green, but I gave him a repaint after deciding to go with the green. I started painted my Ironclad months and months ago, but there are just so many details that I kept getting annoyed at it and putting it down. I need to finish off all the terrain I have on my desk so it's clear and really need to get the airship finished! It's been collecting dust since around march now! (Though I did manage to paint the lenses on both the gunner and his panel a couple of weeks ago, while I was waiting for a wash to dry on the terrain I was painting!) We are planning a big aerial battle, using the new battleplans in the GHB and I need this finished so I can start on the huge batch of dragons I have been collecting for the game! 422508491_woodelfSPoH.jpg.f64571227d52f31a132b50bc620d072b.jpg29598373_1993871107598992_3281361124434904985_n.jpg.08ad89010105a7ffe47898c35e25a6a4.jpg29594639_1993871090932327_2157543476303163631_n.jpg.756c4b0cb660cdb09cd6da00959a59c6.jpg

I wanted to add some scatter terrain to my nighthaunt themed ruined village as so far we have used the larger terrain in games but only as 'background' as there wasn't enough stuff to make for an exciting playing field on its own. Though I have some smaller bits planned, I really wanted some medium sized bits that wasn't just more ghostly rubble, but only had the graveyard and  more ruins to hand. Then the new nightvault objectives came out. Perfect. I've painted up the first half of them, though I have kept a couple of parts aside for later projects. I still have one more large ruin as well and will probably add a couple of flat pieces of terrain, like old roads or something to help break up the blank space of our current grey board.

I may pick up the gauss blaster green edge paint, I wouldn't normally edge highlight terrain like that, but the objects have so many sharp edges, I think they would benefit with a little more work and give them a really spooky glow.

I've sadly had no time to do anything more towards our campaign, real life has had the whole house hold tied up for weeks. I did steal five minutes here and there to get my Barn painted (In the classic blue roof scheme. I'm going to use the old guide to make some home made ones too!) and finished off another couple of wall sections from the manor set. Rebased the first couple of my giant rats as well, to match my plague monks. I have brought a ridiculous amount of parts for new skirmish forces though and looking forward to having January to work on them (and an actual nights sleep!)

My rather insane workload for this year has finally come to an end but since the last parts were done over christmas and gotten rid off, I've found it hard to shake off the nervous energy I'd built up to get through the last hurdles! I've been unable to get myself to sit down at my desk and start painting, even though I've a) really wanted too and b) really needed too with all the dark elves that I've recently gotten! As I'm pretty much a narrative only skirmish player, the thought of painting a 'full size' AoS army fills me with dread (One of the main reasons I dropped out of WFB during both 7th and 8th ed was some of the insane unit sizes at this scale) but many of the recent releases have me so excited that I've decided to move out of my comfort zone and try some new things. Which has lead to a pile of miniatures I didn't have room for!

So rather than waste my time when I couldn't bring myself to paint, I did that job I've been putting off all year and that filled me with dread- I reorganised as much of my hobby room as I could! Which has lead to the cleanest my desk has been since I moved in three years ago! It is so much less depressing to be able to work into the room now and actually sit down with out knocking the 100 or so paints scattered across the place and getting rid of most of the shame pile is a lot less threatening! I also put up (at least in a temporary manner!) my LED light strips that I brought last year! They still need soldering and permanently fixing to the shelf (something I can't do till the new year as we no longer seem to own an soldering iron)

There is still a lot of clutter to get through in there, the top shelf is still covered in more miniatures shame and there are like 150 Dvds that need to be returned to their home, and the drawers still hold the nightmares of a thousand hobbyists!

I was also sick of not having any more space for citadel paints (my paint drawers only fit a handful in compared to the 50 or so Vallejo I can get in each drawer) so, whilst not glamorous, I knocked up a paint rack out of card and hot glue. Its no prize winner, but like any good battle station, it's fully operational and cost next to nothing.
I've also moved over to using a brand of make up brushes for both drybrushing and ink work. They are some of the best items I have ever purchased in the hobby! I brought one out of curiosity, thinking it would at least do for painting some terrain I had and it was so good that over the following weeks I brought a huge stock pile of them, as I'm pretty heavy handed and rough on dry brushes and expected to get through them pretty quick. Over a year later (and all the terrain in this log as well as some other bits have all been painted with the same one) and the brush is only on it's last legs now! Amazing value! I do have enough to probably last me to the end of my life with all the spares I brought! The only downside is they are double ended, and a massive pain to store so I knocked together a rack to hold them as well! Even less attractive than the paint rack but anything to stop them keep rolling off my desk!

Sorry for such a boring (and long!) update. Hopefully this will encourage me to sit down and at least clear something from the shame pile at the very least!

It is very satisfying to see a cleaned up, optimized desk! Add to this painted terrain AND skirmish campaigns and I'm hooked. I love your clean, old-schoolish painting style too :)

Thanks, I spent years trying and not getting any where with more realistic or gritty schemes. I've finally got round to excepting that the clean style is what I do best and I've been able to get on with painting now!

I’m a little late on this but I absolutely love it.

Thanks, never too late, I'm always slow with updates!

Got my stash of gloomspite yesterday,  but before that I tried to clear some of my WIPs that had been cluttering up my desk before operation clean up! I didn't get them all finished as most of them still need the basing done, but most are at 99% and will be easy to finish off when on a day that I can't paint for too long. Slowly working may through my stash of snotlings, then it's going to be time to pull apart the ten or so old square based ones that are due a massive clean up-originally painted around 1992. Also managed to come up with a paint scheme for my newer nighthaunt models, as much I love the oxide ones, I couldn't face painting the whole army like that.
I did get my KO warband leader undercoated but I've been too consumed with the bad moon to start on him yet! (though I need to as he needs to be ready for the next game!)

The next grot is a character I made up for a Mordheim gang quite a number of years ago now and never got around to painting him. He's a squig leg and mushroom seller,  but years of bopping vicious squigs on the head has lead him to be pretty tough!
He also needs a new base (I was always quite pleased with his flagstone base so it will be sad to see it go, but he needs to be on a round like the rest of his warband!) but haven't decided if I will stick with his Mordheim themed one, in remembrance of the old game, or if I will update it to match the rest of the warbands.

IMG_20190112_214745.jpg.6ca3bfa4577c9e9d9b4a0ad98a57f67c.jpg

Also knocked up a collage of close ups of the trolls and snotlings (the snotling bottom caused a bit of a stir on another group!) for the 'eavier metal group #miniaturecloseup2018 #miniaturecloseup2019 challenge. Not the best painter in the world for sure, but some people were taking the challenge very seriously, and I thought it was about time a bit of snotling humour was injected into the proceedings!

Totally awesome! Love your work!

Thanks!

So I've not gotten around to posting many updates here recently. I've still been hacking away at the lead mountain, both for AoS & for Epic 40k (my other favourite game) but college has had me so snowed under that I forgot to add updates here and even updates to my AoS blog have slowed to a crawl. So here is a bunch of stuff I painted between my last update and before I got snowed under with all the work. Some more bits for my Grots and a few odds and ends for a Mordheim anniversary game we were considering putting on over the summer (but that might have to be postponed now, again due to my current work load)

I've been working on way more then what I've finished painting, including way more Grot conversions, including some grotbag scuttlers, which I hope to get back too soon.

I'd usually have replicated the whole posts between here and the blog, but I'm writing this in a quick gap between working, so I didn't have time, so this time there is more to see and read on my blog, if you so wish: https://frostgoblin.blogspot.com/

I hope to be back to posting more regularly soon.

Been ages since I added anything to this thread.

Finally got round to painting my Snotling Warlord- Gütz, The green swordsgrot!

I original built this conversion around 1999, but he was so banged up I reworked him with some identical replacement parts as I loved this model!

Also finished up the first of many, many units of rattlebone warriors, with some old world vibes.

I've intentionally left the shield design blank right now, as I'm not sure what way I'm going to go with the whole army. I've done the unit filler as these will also be used for games of WFB & oathmark. There is still a crow to add to it, but its MIA, I left it on my desk and it seems to have flown off! They will get their own custom unit tray at some point, replacing the neon green 6th Edition one! But I'm still working on a matching unit of nighthaunt and waiting to make a bunch of trays together.

Been ages since I've had time to work on anything, doing both Uni and working from home has taken its toll on getting any hobby done on a regular schedule. But I did get these done a little while back, though there is still some work to finish on them once this term is done and dusted with. I already have Nurgle chaos warriors, the new kits are nice but very pricey for the amount I intend to put together and I wanted something a bit more more fancy for my Slaanesh knights. plus I have a huge amount of spare bits kicking about after buying up some stuff for other projects/conversions.

I really like the simple yet effective scheme 😃

Thanks! I wanted something that was striking on the tabletop/shelves yet I could stand to paint thousands off (I might have gone a bit mad collecting bundles of stormcast recently!) There is a few more details to add and I really need to finish the bases, but overall I think its simple enough that I might have some chance of getting these all done alongside all my other projects!

I really wanted my Slaanesh force to be less 'spikes, guts, skulls & chains' and more of a decadent society to contrast against my 'Nobel rotting knights' of Nurgle.
