Hello everyone!

I am brand new to the hobby, wanted to try out Underworlds, as well as attempt to build a little 500pt army of Stormcast.

I got the Underworlds starter box, which came with the 3 Castigators with Loyal Gryph-Hound, and then swung by a hobby store and snagged Gardus Steel Soul, and the box of 3 Sequitors, but I’m not sure about what else to grab to fill out the last few points.

I was thinking about getting the Vanguard Raptors box, as I think that would get me close to 500pts, but battlescribe says Sequitors are supposed to be in a group of 5, so I’m not sure if I should grab another box of those.

Any thoughts or tips on what I should get, and how best to get into gameplay from here would be awesome, and much appreciated.

Thanks!

the 3 sequitors are not legal so you'd need at least 2 more. Buying a vanguard box won't really get you anywhere but it seems like at this stage you should purchase models you like to paint. Any of the Start Collecting boxes is the best place to start, and if you went into a Warhammer store I'm extremely surprised you weren't offered one of those to start, does "hobby store" mean your Local Game Store (FLGS/LGS)?

500pts isn't for named heroes, though there's always narrative and open play that doesn't rely on legal unit sizes and points are more of a guideline than a hard rule. if you want an actual 500pt army my advice would be to wait for the 3.0 starter sets and get the small or medium level one, unless you want something like this right now https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Age-Of-Sigmar-Tempest-Of-Souls-2018-eng or the aforementioned Start Collecting boxes

I did go to a local game store, and they were a little busy so I didn’t take the time to ask them any questions, I just wandered into the back, found those small little boxes of units and thought they would be perfect to flesh out my little army.

I don’t really know anyone who plays this game, I decided to enter it because I happened to start watching miniature painting videos and kept seeing the models from AoS, and got curious.

My only source of information has been this one guy on my local game store’s Discord server, and when I asked him what to get, he said get anything I liked that added up to roughly 500pts and then he would try to find me someone to play with and teach me the game.

me grabbing the wrong boxes of the units at the store is just a result of my lack of knowledge about the game. I’ve been listening to The Mortal Realms Podcast, which is how I found this forum, but other than that, and the couple of chats I’ve had with that guy on  Discord, I don’t know much about this game.

So, from your suggestions it sounds like I should grab another little box of 3 Sequitors, which will give me 6, but I can just leave one out and have a single unit of 5.

Do you know when the 3.0 starter boxes are coming out? This is the first I’ve heard about them.

Going in model first is absolutely the right thing to do!

You could grab another one of the easy to build Sequitors. The spare one could become a statue or something later. They also have my favourite Stormcast model in them (the lady resting on the shield).

The non-easy to build sets do hae advantages though, they give you more build options, but are also a lot more expensive.

For the Vanguard box, their beasties are nice, but note that the Vanguard models themselves are a bit older, when they were still feeling out how Stormcast should look. A lot more barrel chested, and no female sculpts.

If you can find it, Stormsires Cursebreakers would make sense, giving you a Knight Incantor model and two Evocators that work well enough in low point games (later, you want full sets, so this advice may not hold up. I just don't like the magazine Incantor).

I do agree that, if you're eyeing a Start Collecting, Soul Wars would be the way to go. Fits nicely with what you have, has prettier models than the SC, and gives an additional set of good looking models in the Nighthaunt.

I expect the new boxes to be out in the summer, and do think it's worth waiting for with the bigger purchases.

I also highly recommend looking at different paint schemes. The gold and blue seems to be the least flattering anyone could paint Stormcast.

Thank you for your advice!

I also enjoy the Lady with Shield Sequitor, and by getting a second box I can have two of her, and then two of the big hammer dudes, so I’m excited about that, and I love the idea of making the extra guy into a statue! I will have to make some terrain one day and feature a statue!

I have a Wife & Daughter that also want to play AoS with me, and my Wife absolutely loves the Nighthaunt,(My Daughter is all about the Seraphon) so getting the Soul Wars Box might be the way to go, but now you have me curious about what releases are coming, so I might have to wait.

As far as a paint scheme, I’m a very matchy-matchy kind of person, and I bought these gorgeous dice that are a swirl of gray and blue with white dots, so I was going to paint my Stormcast to match.

I was really inspired with this photo, only switch the red to metallic blue. (That’s not my army, but I give massive respect to whoever painted it, because it’s epic)

If your wife loves Nighthaunt, the Storm Strike (something like that) set instead of just the Sequitors might be worth it. Also gives you castigators, and two easy to builds from Nighthaunt. Alternatively, get Myrnmourn Banshees and the Briar Queen from the GW website so you both have something to paint.

For your daughter, the Saurus and Skink sets are really old and don't have much detail, but that might not be a problem, when I paint with my nieces, details are a bit harder. I don't know what age and proficiency level she is though. If you want more modern sculpts, check out the Lizardman Blood Bowl team, and I have good hope they'll get new sets soonish.

For blue metallic, get Vallejo Gunmetal Blue. It's my favourite colour of every single one I own, but I don't have enough excuses to use it.
