Dead_Ghost
I recently manage to acquire the Skaven half of the Isle of Blood/Spire box set, and will be attempting to build a semi-competitive Verminus Clawpack force off of the back of it! With limited hobby time I wanted to aim for a slightly quicker scheme for the Skaven, but with something to help them standout. First off then is the basing; In order to get that quick-quick approach, I decided to go with this 'barren' land approach, using Martian Ironcrust and kindleflame drybrush, but the bases will be scattered with lumps of warpstone. The warpstone will be on all major bases (characters, monsters, machines) and then scattered across the line infantry. The warpstone is made using sprues trimed and cut into crystal shapes. Most of the weapons will be getting the run of the mill metal+wash+highlight treatment, but again, characters/heroes/leaders etc will get a little extra love with the addition of weapons with a 'warpstone' touch to them. As for the actual models, the armour will be yellow. Yellow isn't exactly the quickest colour to slap down, but armour isn't all that prevalent on the clan rats etc. I'm hoping this splash of colour will help them stand out from their bases a little bit too. In order to speed up the rest of the painting, the cloth will be a mix of Mechanicus Grey, Balor Brown and Steel Legion Drab - washed with Agrax and highlighted again. Here's an example of the (nearly) finished look. After the storm vermin and clanrats are done it'll possibly be a verminlord or stormfiends next! Kramer
Looks good! Great to see a brighter color on the rats. Think it really works.

Dead_Ghost
@Kramer , @Soulsmith - Thanks for the comments. They've definitely been fun to paint. We'll see if that's still the case after 40 clanrats
ZealousJ
Looking great, especially for relatively quick jobs. The yellow on those stormvermin is excellent. I'm really looking forward to seeing more

Dead_Ghost
Thanks@ZealousJ,@Killax. The Warpatone was great for practising blending. Hopefully they'll only get better! Sent from my G3221 using Tapatalk
Dead_Ghost
Managed to get some bulk work done on my Skaven force recently. Arms/weapons have been added, and models have been undercoated. I've started working on the base fur/flesh colours - which will be split into three lots. A lighter Gorthor Brown, darker Rhinox and a mid Mournfang for the majority. In the mean time, i'm a little stuck with how i'd like to base up the models. Torn between the initial plan of the Ironcrust (top) and the Agrellan earth (bottom). I've done a second Agrellan base, which is a bit heavier on the paint so more cracks. Think this might better represent a land that's been sucked of all life. I've also got my first named character for my clawpack - Tretch Craventail!
TheOtherJosh
The green of the warpstone and the red of the blood sands is a solid contrast.Stirland Mud and Stirland Battlemire have a lot of flexibility for color variation. The November 2016 White Dwarf has some excellent "cookbook" examples of basing using the updated texture paints. TheOtherJosh
Did you use the Warpstone painting tips from Duncan on Warhammer TV?https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yL0HOeDGnKA&feature=youtu.be
Dead_Ghost
Ha, I didn't know that video existed. I actually used the Necron Warscythe video which is broadly similar in colours, but blends instead of drybrushes. Whilst I do want to practice my blending - will probably still do blades like this - I think I know how i'll be painting the warpstone rocks etc from now

Dez
Clan Skurvy! Great looking army thus far! I love painting yellow, I have a real hard time NOT painting all my armies yellow and black. I've also been known to paint some bone/purple armies...both my Necrons and Nurgle
Dead_Ghost
Small update, as nothing happens quickly when batch painting 40 clanrats! Base skin/fur colours and the base for the yellow has been applied to all the clanrats. Next up will be to put the lighter skin on face and hands, the cloth colours and metals. followed by a generous dab of agrax. Then the yellowing begins. I've also finished painting my first full unit! When working out my list, I had a spare 40 points - so with the suggestion of @Dez, 30 of those points went on six giant rats. Turns out I had exactly six of the old metal marauder-era rats. Really nice sculpts - and very easy to paint!
Kramer
Yeah really fun to paint... only six happy you enjoyed them though. I remember them feeling like a chore. How are the clan rats coming?
Mordeus
Hey! Great stuff man, what technique did you use to do the weathering? Good luck on the clan rats!
Dead_Ghost
12 hours ago, Kramer said: How are the clan rats coming? They're getting there slowly. I have been distracted by 40k however, so i've also got some Death Guard on the painting table atm. Not all 40k though, as i've also been working on building the Verminlord Warbringer! 11 hours ago, Mordeus said: Great stuff man, what technique did you use to do the weathering? Thanks. Very simple stippling using a bit of foam/sponge. I've been using the foam insert from an old blister pack. Start with some Rhinox Hide and then stipple some iron breaker over the top of that. Where I wanted larger chips, or for them to be more apparent (such as the armour around the knuckles etc) I used a brush! Simple but effective.
