Returning player LF lore

Greetings!

Ive just returned to AoS after a ca 3-4 year break since 40k consumed my heart. However, with the current state of 40k 9th (a bloated mess) I have just rediscovered AoS again, and the main draw for me now is that the gamplay seems so incredibly fun! Alot more random and lighthearted than 40k, yet has room for competative play - love it.

My only problem now though is that I still find the lore of AoS to be shallow, over the top etc (you know the common complaints from most WHFB and 40k players from when AoS first released). That said, I can see that alot has happened since my last visit, and I´d like to find some sort of recap of the lore to see if it would appeal to me more this time around.
From what ive heard, the lore has been expanded and seemingly improved, but ive yet to see it for myself.

This is why I turn to you for help!
I genuinely WANT to like the AoS setting in its entirety, and I think reading the right novels/stories could help me with just that.
Armies I play and would like to explore more: Beasts of Chaos, Soulblight Gravelords and Skaven.

So give me your best reading/youtubing tips!
I wanna dive deep into the mortal realms and come to love it as I do with WHFB, 30k and 40k.

Cheers!

As always 2+Tough’s video are the go to for a great lore binge. :)

And though he’s 90% oldhammer Great book of grudges actually did a decent piece.

Lexicanum is excellent for lore reading and can help you get up-to-date.

And Mengal Miniatures does great tome & book reviews.

And of course looking & asking the AoSlore Reddit is always handy.

And for books to read I’d suggest Soul Wars, City of Secrets, “Sacrosanct & other stories” and since it sounds like you want some more grittier vampire stuff Cursed City & Hollow King. And possibly Clans Pestilens for your Skaven interest.

And if you really want a chunk of lore to chew into then check out the Soulbound rpg. The Corebook, Champions of Death, Greywater fastness, Era of the Beast and upcoming Ulfenkarn would be big recommends.

If the Cursed City & Ulfenkarn stuff interests you they’re still selling the Whq game and the Warhammer community has good articles and stories you can Google around for.

A dynasty of Monsters by David Annandale is pretty good and features both Soulblight and Beasts of Chaos. The soulbound core book and the two city guides they've done are also pretty good. They have a new book on the way about Ulfenkarn, the Cursed City which looks very promising. I just finished The Hollow king which is another good Soulblight focused book.

If you're interested in Death generally the Hunt for Nagash  Audio dramas are some of the best early AoS work especially the monologues that Nagash gives at the start of each episode. https://www.goodreads.com/series/203925-the-hunt-for-nagash

On a general note away from your particular faves I highly recommend all the books by Nick Horth which have a shared corner of the setting and shared characters. Prince Maesa is a great book as is Gloomspite which really captures the nastiness of that faction in a way that no other book for AoS or Fantasy has ever done. There's another book about the Gloomspite by the same author which is coming out later this month. That's one I'm really looking forward to. 620197561_AoS_UFK_CoverimagewithCopyright.png.aa001dc8396673afa91b8b216275ed8d.png1877640768_download(1).jpeg.75774c467659571c4deace7722be3f0d.jpeg

The lore has certainly improved since AoS first launched. The realms have become more fleshed out, with their own characters and cities, etc.

I would also recommend 2+ Tough as a guy on Youtube to follow. He does a good job of going over the lore, for each army book, including subfactions, while also covering the wider story from things like Broken Realms.

I use to think in a similar way to the original poster but one day it all just clicked with me. I think the lore is fantastic. Some read about all the high level cosmic-battle-of-the-Gods stuff that was different to the Old World and think that's Age of Sigmar lore. It's so much more than that. For the average man on the ground, life is as mundane as any other. One might go through life without so much as a glimpse of a Stormcast Eternal much less someone like Teclis or Morathi.

Black Library is a great place to go for a lore deep dive. I recommend City of Secrets, Dominion and especially Hallowed Ground as great ways to learn and get inspired. I've only heard good things about the Soulbound RPG too.

Uh.. have you looked at the non stop campaign books GW has produced for AoS since day one?

There is nothing but lore progression.

Literally the rulebook condenses all the lore up to date as well.  There were more AoS books producing lore in the first year of the game than 6th, 7th, or 8th ed combined (baring End Times which was just killing everyone).  and the end of 2nd edition AoS had 4 big campaign books which had enough lore movement as ETs anyway.
