Soulblight Gravelords replacing LoN book?

How do we know that?

Just applying the rules as written. Legions of Nagash worked strangely with regard to it's faction keywords in so far as there was no LEGIONS OF NAGASH keyword. Instead, you could choose units from a list of approved subfaction keywords like DEATHRATTLE or DEATHMAGES, and they would gainyour faction keyword when you put them in your list.

What that means for Legion of Grief is that you can take all Nighthaunt models, as well as DEATHRATTLE, DEATHMAGES, DEATHLORDS and DEADWALKERS and they gain the LEGION OF GRIEF keyword. The warscroll rewrites in the Gravelords book didn't change anything, because even though Legions of Nagash does not exist anymore, Legion of Grief does not mechanically rely o Legions of Nagash. Because Legion of Grief is not a sub-allegiance of Legions of Nagash. It's its own thing.

So as long as GW does not say that Legion of Grief is no longer valid, it remains mechanically intact. You

So if we really want to take this discussion to lawyer levels:

Legion of Nagash is still perfectly legal. Emails and FB responses have no impact on actual matched play legality. That is ENTIRELY reliant on the GHB and FAQs. Furthermore Legion of Grief is explicitly legal since it has always been ruled to be independent of LoN and even has an FAQ specifically legalizing it.

However, I know perfectly well what the intent is and so I personally consider LoN and LoG to be retired factions. Soulblight is the new "generic undead" codex, period.

We are in a weird "Lame Duck" phase of 2nd edition where things will probably be a bit messy until 3.0 lands.

Huh, so that happened to most Members of the Legion of Sacrament. Haven't read the lore of the Null Myriad yet. I don't know if I read it in one of the threads here or if it was on twitter, but aren't their still Black Disciples who are part of the Legion of Night now?

Not sure about Black Disciples setting up in the legion of night but it’s plausible, the Ossiarch battletome does specifically say that it was most but not all who were killed off, and that only the most magically powerful were chosen to become Mortisians so there’s certainly room to imagine ‘refugee’ Black Disciples swearing allegiance to Mannfred out of desperation and bitterness. Could be a good angle for some homebrew background.

Just to follow on from this, seems it's exactly what happened. From the battletome:

Quote

When Arkhan the Black butchered his retinue of Necromancers, the Black Disciples, to create a cabal of powerful Ossiarch Mortisans, the vampire gladly offered patronage to the scattered survivors, ensuring that he would possess a host of talented Deathmages – and, more importantly, the knowledge of those who studied under his rival Mortarch – to keep his armies marching.
