Tzaangor Arcanite Shields

Gwendar

Question

Had a bit of a debate in a previous game against a Tzeentch player. Apparently he had been reading that the Arcanite Shield description changed in such a way (from 'Roll a dice before allocating to a model with a shield' to 'Roll a dice when you allocate to a friendly unit that has  any models with shields) that it now means you do not need to allocate the wound to a model with the shield, even though you used the shield save because it "specifically says you allocate it to the unit rather than a specific model like it used to".

I do not believe this is intended, as that would mean everyone would start having a single model armed with a shield and the rest would be fully armed. It's always been my understanding that if you use a save like this, the models that get that save must have the wounds allocated first, once they're gone, that's it. I just want this cleared up for future reference.

That is how it is written, one shield will get you all the shield saves you need and you could keep it alive by removing non-shield Tzaangors. Thing is Tzeentch players shouldn't get too excited as I'm certain GW will faq this quick fast. But for the moment enjoy this small boost while it lasts.

If you really want to remove Grand Blades or Tzaangor Mutants. Because thanks to the description those are the only models that won't have shields if you want shields in your unit.

It certainly survived the first BoC FAQ.

Or they wanted that it is like the ruling of Blood Warriors or Liberators, where Goreglave/Grand Weapons benefit from Gorefists/Shields.

In the end. All non-shield models are actually specialists in the unit. it is impossible to take 1 shield and weapon pair for anyone else.

This is incorrect - the wording is:

...each model in the unit is armed with one of the following weapon options: pair of Savage Blades; or Savage Blade and Arcanite Shield.

You can quite clearly take some models with shields and others with paired weapons.

Hm, we ended up settling it on seeming incorrect but would be FAQ'd later on. That just seems odd to me that you can use the save without removing that model, but I see all of the points here. At least we are not the only ones that seem unsure with the wording...I just wanted to be certain that really is how it is now meant to be played as this players runs almost half his unit with shields and is now considering switching to only 1 for the huge offensive boost this would give.

Should be noted there are other units in the game that work this way, most notably Liberators and Sequitors.

True, but I think the confusion for us was more or less the thought of even though it specifies 'Units w/ a shield' and not just 'Models w/ a shield', if you use the effect, you would still need to allocate wounds to that model with a shield regardless.

But if everyone just allocates it wherever, then I wouldn't argue as I doubt that many people are incorrect.
