With the release of the Skaven Battletome its time to get my Clans Moulder back of the tables!

Firstly, I love the new book.

I was quite happy with how my army played before hand, the only thing I didn't like was how flimsy packmasters were and the lack of command ability in the army - but fortunately that's been improved with the new Master Moulders.

And having the option to pick command traits and relics for the army is ace.

Here's the army I'm going to be using for the next few games, I've taken out my Stormfiends and will be trying out the Flesh Menagerie.

Master Moulder (Throt the Unclean), with Stonehorn Blade and Moulder Supreme

Master Moulder with Rabid Crown

Master Moulder (in the menagerie)

3 x 4 Rat Ogors

5 x 10 Giant Rats

2 x Hell Pit Abomination

2 x Wolf Rats

Flesh Menagerie battalion

2,000pts

The day of the book release me and a friend had a clan war between my Clans Moulder and his Clans Pestilens to see what was what. Great games were had, awful photos are below (we were fighting an underground war so the lighting is dark).

So yeah, very happy with the book. More to come.

Looks awesome! I too want to do moulder. Are small units of giant rats worth while, missing out on all the unit bonuses?

I believe storm fiends are still decent for moulder as they don't break allegiance although sadly cannot benefit from artefacts like the rabbit crown. Odd considering it was thrott who created them

@Skritt i've not played with large units of giant rats since the new book came out, but they'll be largely the same as they were before.

Short answer: they're crazy good in 10s.

Essay answer: I honestly think 10 rat units is the only way to go with them. Even with a max unit and all the buffs the giants rats do very little damage, and they're too easy to kill to take the buffs away.

5 units of 10 rats on the otherhand do no damage at all, but are phenomenal screeners for the rat ogors, and they need that desperately to survive.

I also charge them in to combats with the rat ogors, at the opposite end of units, so people can't pile in towards the fragile ogors, and having 5 units to do that with instead of, maybe, 2 is really useful.

Looking super cool! Can you challenge pestilence with a pure moulded list? (Of course you can silly question)

Now for the hard questions!

1. Hell pit vs. Rat ogors vs. Stormfiend? What’s your fave?

2. Flesh managerie worth it?

3. Wolf rats worth it?

Just fishing for that trigger to build out my moulder collection for a clan army ;)

Cheers very much! Hoping to get them finished off soon.

I won all three games we played, so it seems to be possible! Its an absolute bloodbath though, so many times a unit of 4 rat ogors would charge a unit of 40 odd plague monks, kill roughly 26 of them, then get pretty much wiped out in return - any numbers of plague monks are damn scary! Especially with the furnaces providing immunity to battleshock.

One game I got almost wiped out trying to kill his 40 monks, only to get lucky and roll a 4+ to bring a unit back to life, get the next turn and kill him with them.

Hard Questions:

1. My favourite are the Rat Ogors, they put out the hurt and are fun to use. The HPA is phenomenal now though, it used to just be a distraction but now it wrecks. The stormfiends I think are still great, even after their changes, but they no longer fill the niche i wanted them to in my lists (some solid shooting) so i've taken them out for now.

2. Flesh Menagerie is a weird one, I've never really used a Warscroll Battalion before as I always felt just more units was better/more fun.

However, the list needs a spare command point - to do more-more beasts in your opponent's first turn if needs be. And I wanted my list to have an extra relic - rabid crown is way to good not to take, but I wanted my counts as Throt the Unclean to have something more interesting (I've given him the stonehorn blade to represent his thing catcher). And like I mentioned above, rolling a 4+ for the more-more beasts can be a lifesaver.

So all that considered, yeah? I enjoy it, hard to say if its worth it over almost 8 more Rat Ogors though.

3. I've got wolf rats because I wanted a tad more variety in the army. I do think they're great though, i don't use them for killing but instead use their speed to grab early objectives, and to tie missile units and artillery up in combat, for which they do a great job.

I have sent them hunting minor heroes in some games do, which always feels good.

Is that enough of a trigger? I just had to look at the artwork from the last 30 years of Rat Ogors to get me going, god they look so good.

A year and a half goes by, but the fleshmelding depths of Hell Pit have not been idle...

Ever since the Skaven Battletome was released I've been proxying a Thanquol on Boneripper model as my second Hell Pit Abomination. But no more!

Here is the work in progress of my new HPA model. I wanted it to be drastically different to the original model as, even with the various options in the kit, you can't change its pose.

Its an amazing pose, but two of them holding their hands up like they just don't care wouldn't sit well with me!

Instead, i've been cutting apart a Basilisk from Forge World, and trying to make it look like a hunched, whiskered Dr Frankenstein had been at it.

Let me know what you think!

Also, with the new points changes I've been able to add another two Rat Ogors to the list, so I'll hopefully be converting those up soon.

Ta very much @Meat-Flesh! I haven't done any more to him/it as of yet but I am currently in a drive to get the whole force properly sorted, ready for a potential new edition to arrive.

So far I have revisited a Rat Ogor,to try and add some more definition to the skin.

And remade my Bonebreaker model from a few pages ago, into an homage to the classic Ghoritch conversion from White Dwarf! Inspired in part by his appearance in TWW2 a few months ago.

Hopefully the ratwheel will keep rolling and I'll have more updates soon!

A tad more progress on my Rat Ogor, I changed up the colour of the fur (as much as I like the idea of my albino ones I think it made the model too pale overall), and added some bruising on the skin.

I went a bit OTT on the gun arm, but hopefully I can pull it back a bit with some highlights.

Just need to highlight the tail, clean up the face and add some details to the base and he'll be good to go.

Then onto the next 11....

Couple more Rat Ogor WIPs.

This time the first one has just had some rawness added to his skin, and bruising inside the gun area. I need to come back and finish bits like the tail and fur.

The the second has had his skin pretty much repainted, adding lots more definition. Then the red rawness added as well.

I still need to repaint the metal, cloth and fur on that one, but will likely batch a couple of them at the same time for those bits.

Just played a 2k game with my Clans Moulder vs Lumineth Realmlords.

____________________________________

My list was:

3 x Master Moulder (rabid crown, new artefact that gives my general a 5+ ward, and hordemaster trait)

1 x 6 Rat Ogors, with Toughened Sinews (6 wounds, 4+ save)

4 Rat Ogors, with Insanely Rabid (6 attacks, reroll charges)

4 Rat Ogors

8 x 6 Giant Rats

3 x Hell Pit Abominations, one with Prized Creation, another with Accelerated Regeneration (heal D3 *every* hero phase)

____________________________________

Far from a competitive game, but I looove units of 6 Rat Ogors with 6 wounds each. They took the brunt of a unit of Wardens and Bladelords attacking them, and still had enough models left to wipe them out in return.

Having 8 units of Giant Rats is incredible, using them to block off routes to objectives, switch off Unleash Hell to protect my other units, and redeploying (not the CA) quickly to be able to put bodies on objectives. Stars of the show.

And I've never squeezed 3 HPAs into a list before. Meant I could afford to be really reckless with them, and was always able to get a devastating round of attacks with them each turn.

Can't wait to play some more and really get to grips with optimising the new command abilities, and which Battle Tactics and Grand Strategies to choose

A small update with some greenstuff work on my next Hell Pit Abomination.

Filled in the gaping hole in the neck, and added some surgical staples across a few cuts.

Hoping to get some solid colours on his this weekend, ready for my first tournament taking place next month!!!

Most of the bulk of the painting has been done on my new Hell Pit Abomination now, just some details and different tones of scales to pick out.

Also managed to quickly do the rocks for my Gnawholes, then I'm going to try and fill the center with some greenish cotton wool to represent the cloud smoked tunnels.

Just another Hell Pit Abomination to paint, and two more Rat Ogors to build and paint, and I'll be ready for my tournament in just over a week's time!!!

And a quick update this time as my deadline draws ever closer!

Its not 100% finished but its most of the way there now, and I'll have to turn my attentions to some other models (including a 3rd Hell Pit Abomination made from a Brood Horror) to get them Battle Ready.

So deadline has now been and gone, and I managed to take a mostly fully painted army to a tournament the weekend just gone.

Managed to get my Brood Horror model painted up in a single day for the event!

The TO kindly let me use it as a Hell Pit Abomination, though I think I'll need to source a different model for that in the future (current thoughts are the new Sludgeraker from the Kruelboyz...).

20210926_095404.jpg.bd45731a722ca204d66479165cc1c09d.jpg

Here's the shot of the whole army as it currently stands:

20210926_095418.jpg.4a53e04b5948f088949c1a82b07a8e70.jpg

Didn't manage to squeeze a Best Army nomination again this time, and I think I'm having to face the fact that the army just doesn't leap off the table (as well as some key models not looking good enough quality yet, such as the regular HPA, and the skin on the older Rat Ogors).

The main offender I believe is their bases, which while being a dark green just look black when in an event hall.

As such I'm going to try out a load of different colours for the stone, and even try a different rim colour than my beloved black, to see if that helps lift them a tad.

Will report back with my findings!

Here are some close ups of the army:

______________________________________

As for the tournament itself:

I'm very much not a competitive player by nature, but I did enjoy diving quite deep into the strategy this weekend.

Was a 40 player event, with a lot of tough lists.

I played:

- Disciples of Tzeentch (Draw)

- Stormcast Eternals (Win)

- Kharadron Overlords (Loss)

- Daemons of Nurgle (Loss)

- Gloomspite Gitz (Win)

So going 2/1/2 which I'm really pleased with, exactly middle of the road and came 20th out of 38.

My Giant Rats were critical in me capturing objectives and scoring Battle Tactics.

My Hell Pit Abominations almost always died but they were a great distraction and hurt the enemy hard whenever they got the chance.

My Warlord Throt the Unclean survived in most of the games, and was able to resummon units on a 4+ far more often than I was expecting.

And I love the way Rat Ogors play now with the BR: Kragnos mutation table - my 6 Rat strong unit with Toughened Sinews (6W, 4+ Sv) didn't get wiped out in a single game, and the unit with Insanely Rabid (6 attacks) was really able to tear units apart.

So, overall, the army is never going to take the competitive scene by storm, but I absolutely love how it plays. All games were really close, so it can definitely hold its own with some clever play (cleverer than me, I made sooo many tactical mistakes). Can't wait to play some more.

If you actually read all that, I thank and commend you for your time and patience!
