Tzaangor Management's Painting Projects

Recommended Posts

Just a quick update to say that a wet palette has been made and is making a huge difference to paints drying out. Why do GW not make these (not out of tissue paper and an old Tupperware box obviously...) and then sell parchment paper inserts?

Hopefully getting the paint on a little thinner and have three more Tzaangors with their base colours on and washed, ready to start working up the layers, probably next week now. The proof of the pudding, as always, will be in the eating, but feeling good about them.

A huge thank you for that tip!

So, as I've said, the wet palette is making a big difference to keeping the paint liquid for longer and I think is helping me get it on more consistently. Still a lot of practicing to do, but encouraging stuff.

Have tried to tone down the metal a little on this batch, with less bright highlights and more of the shading showing through (although one of the hilts has lost all definition and I notice more tidy-ups needed now that I have uploaded the photos...), as well as a couple of other little changes / additions / subtractions to see how it alters the overall effect.

As always, feedback, comments and criticism greatly appreciated and has certainly helped me a lot so far.

Slight change of tack in that I needed a break from Tzaangors and also spent some time thinking about what I'd like to have in a 1000 point army. I decided that I really want to get the Changeling in, as I think the model is awesome (I have never touched a resin model though, so may live to regret that) and I think he's got pretty decent rules. Additionally, from what I can tell, Marauders are an excellent objective holding force and I also really like their viking aesthetic.

learnt a lot from painting these guys, particularly in terms of putting theory into practice: Base coated all of them brown rather than black, which really makes a difference to how colours come out (I knew this in theory, but different to seeing it happen - trousers are the same colour as the Tzangor's skin); missed shading the metal on the shield, so spot shaded the joins, which sort of worked, but made me think about shades more; and dry brushed certain areas to create different textures,  like the bandage like material on the arms and on certain shoes to change the feel of certain parts of the model.

Lot of improvement still to make, but reasonably happy with how these guys have come out and, as ever, please do share your thoughts, pointers, criticisms liberally, they're making a huge difference to a novice painter.

Honestly, I think the best impression I can give for how good these models look is this:

Every time I see your blog updated I check it out and think : 'i thought this was the bloke that said he was new to the hobby? I must be getting him mixed up'. Then I check back and realise yup, that's you :).

Honestly these are really coming along. They're not just well painted individually but have a really distinctive theme and look great together, which can be a really difficult thing to pull off.

I particularly like those marauders. You've made an old kit look good next to brand new models.

I really really wanting get a move on with my Tzeentch stuff now.

Please keep it up

Thanks @ZealousJ really appreciate it. Definitely dive into the Tzeentch stuff, the kits are fantastic and I certainly have a new appreciation of the level of detail and quality after painting a few marauders.

Also, I should say that i meant the Curseling rather than the Changling, although the Changling is cool too!

I really like the basing - is it just chopped up sprues for the crystals?

Yeah, just chopped up sprues painted three progressively lighter greens (waagh flesh, warboss and moot, which are just the three that i happened to buy) concentrating lighter towards the top, then edged with moot green mixed with Ulthuan grey and finally glazed yellow.

Pretty simple and the only modelling materials that i had to hand!

Just finished my second Skyfire and I have to say that I really enjoyed doing it, after feeling completed daunted after the first one. I think a large part of the enjoyment is thanks to taking some time away from the ultra-complicated Tzaangors and painting some far simpler Marauders and refining a couple of things and trying a couple more, which I then tried to put into this model.

Lot's of talk about the Skyfire list at Adepticon, but if they were all painted up, then I take my hat off to the guy running that list, as I think it would take me a year at least to have nine of those painted, let alone 18!

As always, tips and criticism welcomed, they've made a huge difference to me so far, so thank you again.

Great work on the skyfire. I particularly like what you've done with the disc itself.

Thank you, much appreciated. I definitely partially ignored the disc on the last Skyfire and treated it more as scenery. This time, having taken some inspiration from your thread, I tried to treat the disc more a character in it's own right. So, double thanks I guess!

Managed to get a bit more painting done this week, after moving back onto night shifts and so have finished the Standard Bearer, Musician (how does he play that horn with a beak?) and mutant from the Tzaangors. Noticed that the armor wasn't as well cast on these guys, which you can probably see best on the mutant (outside of the armor on his knees and thighs lost a lot of definition), which is a bit of a shame, but overall fairly happy and just the Twist Bray left from the first ten!

Really nice work here, I love seeing how you have progressed from the first models at the start of this blog. I'm working through my own unit of tzaangors at the moment. So many details on the models it makes me feel disheartened but I'm inspired after seeing your painting progress!

Many thanks and I can certainly see the progression as well, which is hugely gratifying. It's thanks in large part to the thoughtful comments and encouragement left on this PLOG., as well as just sitting down and doing it. Practice really is the key.

A long way still to go on my painting journey, but here is the latest offering (apologies for the particularly bad pictures). Felt like the colours were decided for me at this point and there were almost no questions for me to answer on that front, which was interesting. Not sure I would've painted the skirt white-ish green, but felt like the right thing to do given the rest of the scheme and, while I certainly could've made the transitions better, I learnt a lot, which I'll take forward.

As always, feedback greatly appreciated!

Such an awesome looking army.  The black/grey skintones look so menacing  and those sprue crystals are a really great idea that i might have to borrow for my flux cairn.  The skyfires that are close to the ground in particular are cool looking the first one you had painted just looks so badass.

Your gaunt summoner looks ten leagues ahead of mine so dont worry too much about how it looks.  I see those feathers in the front and shake my head at the layers and layers of paint i put on mine.

Looking good! Great gradient on the headdress. Maybe give the grey skin a last highlight? Otherwise leaps and bounds mate.

Thanks mate. Was thinking I might revisit and smooth the fire transitions a bit more, edge the metal again and highlight the skin again. Going to pick up some more Marauders as a palette cleanser and see how I feel after those.

Thank you sir and obviously borrow away (as if I own the idea... lol). I'm fairly pleased with the Summoner, so will leave him for a bit and have a think about whether I want to return, but I am terrible for seeing all the things that could be better... I do however need to get an army on the table at some point!

These guys are a little rushed to get them finished, as I'm (potentially) about to have much less time for painting, so there are a couple of little details missed (inside mouths, etc.) that I'll try and come back to.  I now have three unit champions primed and ready to take the force up to a total of 500 points on the nose, including my first bit of weapon and hand swapping on the Tzaangor Twist Bray. It looks ok, so will look to make the next two units of Tzaangors and marauders, who're just over the horizon, a little more unique.

As always, comments, criticisms, etc. are always welcome.

The coven is amazing, I really like your dark colors, especially skin and steel. Dark and brooding they are! Dark, brooding and grim. But could use maybe a bit of varnish?

Thanks very much, was definitely looking for that darker cave dwelling vibe.

What effect would the varnish give and are we talking an ardcoat style product (which I've never used) or something different?

You nailed it perfect. Dark caves are a good place for hidden cults too!

Matt varnish would make them even more ominous and dark, and glossy one - brighter and, well, glossy. I use varnish always - to safeguard the paint and add new depth and effect. As far as GW is concerned, they do produce 'Ardcoat, which is matt varnish, but I use usually ones from Vallejo - I like their varnishes and metallics. But really any good acrylic varnish suffices.

Nichts zu danken, you are welcome :) My love for varnish comes from the times in 40k - my Dark Angels and CSM (who were painted dark red and black in halves with dark golden trim) with glossy varnish were just really beautiful. And it's good for paint anyway, both in ensuring it never fades (which is always an issue with metal and resin miniatures) and in adding new effects, like matt one being good for toning down bright colors a bit.

My latest update is all of the unit champions for the units painted so far and the first points mile stone that I was aiming for which is 500. So, if you ever wondered what 500 points of Tzeentch Arcanites and Slaves to Darkness looks like, then this is your lucky day!

I have the next 500 points on the building table at the moment, but have a feeling that I may take a quick dive into the Skirmish warbands, once they're released, with some Iron jaws. Next 500 should go a little quicker now, as I have a rough idea of what I'm aiming for and will move to some slightly larger batches. In case you're wondering I have:

10 Marauders

10 Tzaangors

1 Lord of Chaos on foot (Awesome model, so I had to fit him in)

1 Ogroid Thaumaturge

As always criticism, tips, etc. very much welcome and, also as always, apologies for some bad camera phone photos...

Used the Enlightened spear and spare hand from the Skyfire box to give the Twist Bray a two-handed weapon, as I originally built him with two hand weapons. made a few mistakes with how the knife should be used, so the joins are a bit rough, but overall I'm quite happy with how it came out.
