  1. Well the good news is that this army will probably not grow my pile of grey plastic any further. Not saying I am disappointed. If I was it would have been right after seeing the 3rd teaser video as it was pretty clear the new army resembles a lot of the Morghast, which aren't among my favorite sculpts, not to say I just don't like them. It is not that I dislike the new models, and I wouldn't call them bad sculpts either(not at all), its just that there are armies that I like more. So if I wanted to start a new army next to the two I am already painting (very slow progress) I probably wouldn't choose this one. I appreciate the creativity and how GW makes them look very original and unique, but its a bit to much futuristic/cartoonish for my, I guess, more traditional mindset. I would be over the moon with a bit more traditional looking skeletons in similar samurai/Asian like armor and setting. I like the Lore too. I actually do like some of the models though. I think the death riders are fantastic, the war machine I find interesting, impressed by the size of it too, and I really like the commanders accompanying the motarch, lets hope the kit also allow you to have them on a separate base and having a warscroll on its own. If the whole army were like them I was probably sold. Still not impossible I will buy some of them in the end. If they are indeed in a box together with ogres, including the new Tyrant and hopefully a new butcher, then, provided the price is right, it would be an instant buy for me. Also much depends on the paintjob. I find them much better looking in the video than they look on the official pictures. So curious how people going to paint them. Personally I think I wouldn't paint all the leg and arm covers as bones. I guess that already would give them a less thick, Robo look that they do now.
  2. Only one week left, only did 4 more chainrasp so far...so 10 done, 10 to go. Not much chance I will finish the other 10 as planned...just lets see how far I get. At least I think this 4 are already slightly better than the first 6. I used zenithal priming on three of them now, and I feel I got a better result on the hoods and faces because of that.
  3. Yeah, got to agree...definitely not a queue I think...hard to tell what it is exactly. I actually should stop looking at it..as I start to see weird things now, like that conical helmet you refer too, as the more I look at it, the more it looks like e German WII helmet...which would be interesting theme indeed.
  4. I admit I am far from an expert on Chinese history...doesn't go much further than Kungfu and Bruce Lee But yes Google/wiki says...it is Manchu, and during Qing Dynasty (which had Manchu Origin?) It was was actually required for HAN Chinese (which gave resistance). As for the look Now I think the mid Qing Dynasty look?!
  5. This is what I mean: Now I enlarged it, I start to doubt for a bit. But if not a tail, what else could it be? a bit like small bones?
  6. I think there is much truth in what you say. Indeed I wouldn't expect they will just copy everything you can find in history books about an ancient culture, replace flesh and blood, by skull and bones and call it an army, something you may say they did for Tomb Kings in the past. So I guess whatever the theme maybe, I don't think it will include things like sphinxes, Chinese dragons or exact copies of uniforms and armour belonging to one and the same culture. Still, I think there is often a clear source of inspiration for many of the existing GW armies, including relatively recent ones. DoK, has a very medusa/greek flavour imho, Nighthaunt also has a very classical gothic / mid victorian feel over it (grimghast reapers are literally how they depict the ghost of Christmas yet to come in many movies and books) and even some of the Warcry bands like the splintered fang (greek/Spartan) and untamed beasts (Conan the Barbarian). In fact also the announced new Ogre Tyrant still has this Mongolian Inspired look if you ask me. But I have to say all of them have little details added or changes that makes them very GW and different from anything else around. And of course there are also examples of armies that are more a mix of many things, or a thing on its own. I just wonder if the often heard Copyright argument really holds true in the end. I think it is indeed more because of the freedom and satisfaction it gives the designers. That said, I still expect this new army to have a theme that is inspired by one or few recognizable cultural aspects. Or maybe I just hope they do, because I have to admit I have a strong preference for armies that do. Reminds me of something I like to add to my speculations in the previous post. The tail the hero has on its head in the 2nd teaser. I just realized that this is something that was very common in some regions of china of course , in fact even required during some period in ancient China. Stupid that I didn't think of that right away (you can learn from the movies alone). So I think that apart from the music in the first teaser, this maybe even the strongest indication there might be at least some Chinese aspects to this army. As for the Egyptian aspects. As much as I would like to see them return in some form, to be honest I see hardly any evidence for it. Apart from the mentioned sunrays and pyramid on the stone, and possibly a sarcophagus...I see nothing that hints in that direction. Not the music, not the army silhouettes, the city, or anything else. I fail to see mummies in the 2nd trailer, and I am not so sure if that thing on the staff is a scorpion. It could be, but than what supposed to be the tail is actually the hook that has one of the kings heads attached. Pyramids are not exclusive to Egypt (China has them as well i.e.), and worshipping the sun you see in basically every culture. Of course very well possible that they just made a mix of several cultural aspects, and give a nod in the direction of TK fans too. We will see, and in the meanwhile I keep speculating
  7. Yes, it is easy to see how these could be sunrays, while the triangle building below it can be seen as a pyramid as well. What I miss on the Rumor Engine however, is the sun itself. On the pictures from the Aton period I think it is always there, which make sense as why make a picture of that one god, without showing the god itself. Doesn't mean GW artist couldn't have used their creative freedom to leave it out of course
  8. I love to speculate, and these trailers and new death army gives us so much to speculate about I have to admit I am becoming quite hyped for this army. A good recipe to get largely disappointed in the end, but for now I just enjoy the thrill of trying to figure out what this is about and think about the vague hint and clues they are giving us so far. The safest assumption to make is that this al about bones an so it is reasonable I think to expect an army that is largely made out of skeletons, or bone constructs. No doubt there are alternatives, but for now I find it unlikely that tithe of bones comes down to vampires or zombies. In the first trailer the narrator refers to having rebuilt himself in his homeland. In 2nd one he speaks of the city he was born in. That gives me the strong feeling that this homeland and city has some significance, and as such more likely the army will have a strong cultural flavour over it. Reason for me, like many before me, to look specifically for clues about this homeland. This turns out to be not that easy, as things seem to point in all kind of directions. The Music in the first trailer to begin with. I have listened to it over and over again now, and compared it with music in various movies. I am as certain as you can be certain about anything that this is Asian, and more specifically China (or perhaps Mongolian or Japan even.) I really cannot hear anything Egyptian or middle eastern in it, and not Indian either (not 100% sure about the last though.) The buildings however doesn't look Chinese (or Mongolian) to me at all. It gives me the feeling of Angor Wat, which is a Hindu temple originally, so yeah could be Indian. Nothing Egyptian here either imho, unless you like to see a vague pyramid shape in the main building. As for the accent used by the Narrator, I really cannot make much out of that other than they clearly try to make it sound a bit exotic. The second trailer shows what I think is part of the army itself. Not sure what to think of the silhouettes of the soldiers, nor their weapons. They seem to have hoods, which I wouldn't directly associate with Chinese or India, Egypt or anything Asian for that matter. For the weapons however, although the pictures are to vague to drop into conclusions, it easily can be one of those fedual Chinese weapons, I think But maybe one can find similar weapons for Egypt or India..not sure. At least they don't look like regular medieval weapons we usually see. Then the humans that are carrying the big plates with bones (harvest) out of the city. They look very alive to me, and wearing something on their head that looks a bit like a turban or something, Indian maybe, or can it be Egypt? (not what we see on the old paintings I think) Then for the Hero in the 2nd trailer. That one looks strange indeed. Not sure if I like it if it turns out to be a walking sarcophagus or it carrying its casket on its back like a turle. Maybe it floats, like Kurdoss on his throne? If I had to guess I would say he just carrying this big tombstone (the rumour picture doesn't seem to indicate a sarcophagus or casket, more like tombstone or a stele (Egyptian memorial stone.) I like the idea of a servant/priestcarrying him on his back, but hard to tell from the pictures. Either way, this stone regardless if it is it a sarcophagus or a tombstone seem to rule out Indian or hindu theme, as they don't burry their deaths but burn them instead as far as I am aware of. Ancient Chinese do use tombstone, but I am not sure if they look anything like this one. Also notice he has some kind of "tail in his "hair" with bones?...any clue in what direction that takes us, any culture that is known for this? Chinese? To cut a long story short, Me don't know Nothing There seem to be indication of different cultures and aesthetics. What pops into my mind now, no clue if it makes any sense, is that if this army is going from city to city, harvesting bones (I assume to grow in size), they might collect bones from all kind of cultures and maybe even races, and so the army itself eventually is made out of all kind of skeletons from different cultures and/or races. That would probably even allow the more gothic style deathrattle to make part of it. At least it would explain why the Trailers give so many hints that seem to be a bit contradictive to me. Just my 2 cents, Oh just realized...The narrator also speaks of himself of being an emperor (in death.) Now although there are many civilizations from the past that had an emperor, first thing that comes to mind when speaking off emperors (apart from Rome maybe), is China and also Japan as a good second
  9. I have probably even less time than last month, but I aim to finish at least the remaining 14 chainrasp from Soul Wars. I will be more than happy if I am able to finish them. I expect I can do them considerable faster than the first six though, as I struggled a bit with finding the right mix and basing, but now I know how I like to go forward with them, it will probably take less time to finish them. After that I probably continue with the rest of the NH from Soul Wars. Cannot wait to start with the black coach and Lady olynder, but Ipromised myself first to finish the SoulWars box (well the NH). In the meanwhile the grey plastic piles up further. After long internal debate, I eventually couldn't resist the good deal the warcry box is, and with at least one new Ogre and a completely new death army on the horizon, both probably instant buys for me, I am far from finished buying stuff
  10. Sorry, bit late with posting as I was away last week. Didn't do as much as I hoped for, only able to finish 3 Reapers and 6 Chainrasp from the Soulwar box. In addition also a Stormcast model from soulwars as I wanted to try out some of the contrast paints for a bit, as I don't collect SCE they are perfect for practising for a bit. Mixed feelings. I think it worked out as I hoped for on the robe and such. Bone also was good, although I might prefer white next time, not sure yet. As expected larger flat areas like the shield and shoulderpads I found harder. Probably needs more practise.
  11. This easily becomes my favorite topic It is just that little bit of extra motivation I need, and nice to see what others are working on. Skipping Ogres for now, as I am waiting for hollow bases I used with the two completed models. Waiting fro months on those already. Small list again, not much time untill end of the month: - 5 Grimghast reapers from the Soul war box. - Thorns of the Briarqueen warband - Good part of the Ironblaster
  12. More or less finished the 2nd part of my contract yesterday. Still have small things to do. For one, I am hesitating if I should add snow to the ogre, it is a bit scary as I have little control over it, and hard to remove afterwards.. And the Tyrant I finished earlier: .
  13. I bow deep for such excellent paintjobs! I love the earthy muted tones you use with the ranger, and also how you did the skin, nose and ears on the Goblins,. Simply amazing and very inspiring
  14. Finally!! First part of my goal this month is done, and probably more important, the first miniature I finish in years! You could say a small step for mankind, but a giant leap for me. When I look at the photo's now, I still see plenty things I missed, or could use some rework. But still, given my average at best painting skills, I am quiet happy with it tbh. I like to think of Ogres as brutal creatures living in a world of ice, steel and fire. So a lot like BCR, a little less like Gutbusters, and even less like most of the man eaters . Worn outfit, rusty armour, nothing fancy or shiny...that's what I like about them. I have less with the gore and blood that is usually also an important part of their theme. The reason I choose the more classic grey/khaki skin colour is twofold. First of all, like I said in my previous post, I bought this army years ago around the time the newer kits like the stonehorn where released, and although I never finished anything, I still have quiet a few half painted ogres with this skin colour, which was at that time common skin tone for ogres. So it makes sense to continue to use it, rather than I have to re-paint the rest. Apart from that, I simply like this skin tone more than the human skin tone that is more popular these days. I like to see them as monsters rather than just fat, ugly human beings. And to me, this colour also feels a better fit in the picture I have in mind of them. Just a personal preference of course. Part 2, Stonehorn underway.
  15. was this already there?? First time I notice (nothing new inside for what I see though)
  16. Just another example by Tyler Mengel: https://www.facebook.com/groups/warhammerageofsigmar/permalink/1205941342918010/
  17. Yeah you are completely right, for some mysterious reason i used a price of 13,9 NZD for one pot of contrast, instead of 13,5 Stupid I admit
  18. Ok the paints are up on NZ website: For what I see: Pots are 18ml The battle Ready Paint Set (4-3-2-1) saves you about 30 NZD 13 NZD on an otherwise total of 111 NZD The full contrast bundle saves 13,7 NZD nothing... Contrast Medium and Stormshield are the same price as contrast At least they show small example pictures for each contrast paint (and brief instruction for whcih paints to combine to get the effect shown). The Batlle Ready paint set could be an interesting option to consider, if it would be a permanent option. But now I am just interested in Contrast, the new medium and the primers. I really don't need shades atm. The bundle really isn't a save at all...order individualy via the known resellers is probably much cheaper All under the condition that I didn't make miscalculation, and the price difference will be the same for all countries (NZ is generally more expensive )
  19. As not being really into Lore, I cannot really judge on whether an Egyptian theme would fit AOS or not , though I would expect as Nazbit says, that the way the mortal realms are setup, they can basically fit in anything, especially because of Stormvaults. But if they ever return, I may hope they still have Ancient Egyptian Aesthetics as that is what make them so attractive in the first place in my opinion. I don't see how a returned TK (or whatever their name will be.) refers to TK at all, without having at least a somewhat Egyptian/Desert theme. I am not saying they need to have Egypt written on their foreheads in hieroglyphs, nor does there need to be sphinxes or even pyramids, but it has so much else to offer, so much possibilities to distinguish it from other (death) armies. The cult of death, mummies, deathmasks, animals like crocodiles, cobra's, scarabs, scorpions, big statues, graves, traps etc etc. No need for skeletons though imho. Don't get me wrong, I am totally fine if they don't return if they don't fit, but if they do... By the way., aren't there a lot of other faction that actually do have similar references to real wold ancient societies or WHFB. I think of i.e. Seraphon, that still have strong hints of an Aztec (or similar) culture, DOK is basically Medusa/Greek. What is different for TK?
  20. For what I have seen so far from the various examples and reviews around, the end result still heavily depends on the painting skills. But it seems that these paints can help anyone, regardless of his/her painting skills, to paint their miniatures at least up to the same level as they usually do., in considerably less time and effort. So non regular painters, people who basically hate to paint, can now achieve a relatively representable painted army, with the least amount of effort, while the pro painters can still get amazing results by combining contrast with other techniques, and still save time (which can be used to for more detail I.e.) In addition, I think the contrast paints may as well help the average people to get better results from more advanced techniques. Personally I hope that it will help to improve my blending as they seem to be perfectly fitted for that. For pro painters it may open up all kind new techniques to make small improvements as well. Time will tell of course, but essentially it is all about time in the first place. So eventually it comes down to the questions: How much can you afford?, and how much are you willing to pay for the extra time? That is a personal choice, the one not better than the other. For me it is pretty simple. I have far more money than time (and I have not much money), but for others that may be different. Another thing to consider I guess, is what you are about to paint. I think the contrast paints are not as good for large surfaces and plate armor, as it easily shows brush strikes, or uneven flow over the surface. I fully agree with a.o. GeneralZero that they seem to be much better suited for highly detailed organic material. So much depend on the miniatures you like to paint, if the contrast paint is the best choice, and worth the money. Other considerations are, I think, the pot size and the amount of paint you will need for a single layer, and how much you can dilute it Speaking about pot size, Where does this 17ml come from? It seems to be an odd number (literally) and apart from that I have seen mostly people assuming 18 ml as that is exact hallway the 12ml and 24 ml pots, which seems a fair assumption. And Runebrush says 20ml. I guess he has the better resources, and when I compare the pictures of the new pots with 24ml ones, it doesn't seem unlikely either..as they show slightly bigger than 3/4 of the 24ml. But have to admit I am always miles away from winning these "guess how many marbles are in this bowl like competitions". So its probably like 16ml. Last word on the price. I am still not convinced it is actually that excessive for GW standards. Ok you get 17-20ml for the same price as a 24ml pot of shade. But if you ask me, these paints also have more advantages and possibilities than the average shade, not to mention the time you win (which they say is money too, right?). And also from material perspective...contrast probably holds much more pigment per ml than I,e. a shade, not really surprising that comes with a price as well...but hey, I am not arguing that GW probably tries to get the most out of the hype also.
  21. I feel the same. Not to rant GW, I generaly like what they do, but this I don't understand. How hard can it be to share some pictures? And if not to the level as suggested by generalZero, the least they can do is sharing sharp closeups of the miniatures as they were displayed at Warhammer Fest UK. Now, apart from what I can make up out of the various reviews vidz, I am totally in the dark what to choose, and I rather get a bunch at once instead of just trying 2 or 3 first, because of the cost and time for shipping. Black and white are probably instant choices, and I guess I will get at least some from the brown and skin tones, but other than that I would really like to compare the different shades of the other colours in the range.
  22. Ok, I think I am going to give it a shot as well. It may not seem to be really ambitious compared to others, but considering the fact that I haven't been able to finish a single model in years, it actually is very ambitious. My goals for this months will be: - Finish a Stonehorn. - Finish a Gutbusters Tyrant - Make a start with a Ironblaster. The miniatures are part of a Orgre army of around 1000 pts I bought at the time they were released (what was it 2010?) I always loved the Ogre aesthetics and was very enthusiastic about the new models at that time. So I started assembling and painting for bit, and then life happened, never finished anything and left them untouched until now. Really looking forward in finishing them, as even after so much time I think they are still great models. Much has change since then of course, and it is no longer an army either. So I guess I will just pick the ones I really like.
  23. I think that rumour is largely based on the fact that GW announced at least one more battletome for each grand alliance. As all death faction already have a AOS 2 ready BT (provide LON is suited for AOS), it makes sense to expect a new army
  24. Lol, I had to google that one: persnickity, just to find out that I am indeed a hopelesly persnickety person when it comes to painting. Fully aware of the silliness of it, and the time wasted. I mean if only I did a perfect display quality paintjob, but that isn't the case either
