Old:

You can pile in as long as you get closer to the nearest model. If you can't get closer (are in base-to-base already), then you can't move.

New:

You can pile in as long as you get as close or closer to the nearest model. If you are in base-to-base already, then you can still move, as long as you end up in base-to-base again.

Note:

More could have changed, but this is all we were shown so far.

Some issue with the wording Imo. Doing some twitter rounds.

While the intend of the wording is clear. Just means you can circle around a model where previously you could not. Nearest enemy model is arbitrary and changes when a unit moves. This wording at least leads to an argument that Starting 2in from model a and ending 1in from model b fits. Would need to say the same enemy model or nearest enemy model before the move is made to be 100% clear.

To answer the original question: under the old rules if you were in base to base you could not pile in. Now you can pile in as long as you are only circling the model.

It's not arbitrary. The closest model is the closest model at the point you are making the move. It's entirely fine for the example you gave. In the following phase, model B would be the closest model.

Previous version:  In base-base models could not move

New version: In base-base can now slide around bases, this benefits as it allows models to slide along bases they are in contact with, making space for rear ranks to spill forward and into range.  Especially so against large monsters as it allows your unit to 'flow' around the monster and maximise attacks.  It also allows you to use it as a tactical move, pushing your unit around the monster in a direction you want them to go in subsequent turns (such as to capture an objective behind it).

Irrelevant. Closest model is closest model *before* you move. Not during/after.

Correct, thats the same as it is now, you can move past the nearest model as long as you dont go past it more than the distance you were from it.

I dont also get people saying you can 'pin' a model by being in base contact with 2 models, as they are both nearest.  The rule (new and old) was nearest model, not models, so if you are equidistant to 2 models, you can choose which is the nearest for the purpose of the rule.
