About this blog

This is my blog to track and record what I have painted and will continue to paint as I work through various projects for my Age of Sigmar models. The first few entries were my old things from my WiP forum thread which will be deleted shortly. New stuff will go up as well of course!

Alarielle the Everqueen

Two weeks before the Facehammer GT I decided that I could probably add Alarielle to my army list. The model is very impressive, and I basically worked on her in three separate stages - The Base, the Wardroth Beetle and Alarielle herself. Basing Alarielle  For the base I followed my standard Sylvaneth basing style. I've written about it so much on this blog I imagine anyone could follow it now with ease! The first step was to glue down a nutella lid onto the so I knew where my wate

Marauders of Tzeentch

For my Tzeentch force I need some foot troops. The cheapest battle line in the warriors army are Chaos Marauders at only 60 points for 10 models. However there are a couple of problems. Firstly, the models are really old, very poorly posed and they have a whole load of annoying mould lines. Secondly they are very much of the Old World frozen north aesthetic with the cloaks and beards. All the new Tzeentch models have a very different feel to them. So what is the solution? Clearly to do a ri

Growing the Oak of Ages

After Blood and Glory last weekend I came home pumped up for some new and exciting Hobby challenges. The first thing I decided to do was create my very own Oak of Ages to be the centrepiece of a new set of Sylvaneth terrain. I've purchased a Grassy Plains 2 FAT mat and I realised I didn't have any 'green' terrain to go with it. So I started raiding the terrain bin....  A while ago I'd bought a big piece of Aquarium terrain to make a realm gate with, and I knew that my son had collected some

Hero Bases Review

I picked up the Hero Bases to have a look at at the weekend. I made three of them up. Generally they come in two or three pieces and there are no instructions, but its pretty easy to assemble them based on the pictures on the back of the box. For my order force I went with the three most generic ones. There is a fairly broad range - some of the bases would definitely look better with chaos models on (luckily I have a few of those knocking around...).  The detail is generally better than the

First stab at a Lord of Change

First of the Lords of Change completed. I've got the lord of change finished that I've been working on for the last couple of weeks. Couple of small conversions to change angles on the arms and neck, but otherwise its stock. Basecoating all done with spray cans which was a fun little experiment - just had to be careful when doing the purple on the wings and the legs. After that it's a lot of drybrush work. Some Sharpie highlighting too on the golds so that I could work away from the hobby desk.

Gorechosen - 1st thoughts

I was lucky enough to play a game of Gorechosen, GW's new boxed game last Thursday. We played a couple of games and I thought I'd pop down my first thoughts.  I played with Ben and I'm sure you've heard or watched his review on the Bad Dice YouTube Page. The Good Firstly the game is extremely good value. The four models are excellent sculpts and if you buy them individually you'd pay considerably more than the rrp for this game. The game itself is quite simple - the rules are clear and

Introducing the Free Guild

My Empire army in 8th edition was a pretty solid tournament army and I knew at some point I was going to have to rebase it all. When the Shattered Dominion bases were released from GW I decided these would be perfect as a starting point. However there were a number of things I wasn't happy about. When I got the bases I started off by sanding and texturing sections, and also obscuring a lot of the skulls as they are a bit too flat and comical looking for my liking. Instead I glued actual resin sk

Here come the Spites...

I completed the Unit of Spite Revenants the other day. I think these are some of the best Sylvaneth models as I love the menacing look and feel they have. These are the last unit to be done. All I have left now is Alarielle, the leader.

The Lords of Change

This weekend is the South Coast GT and I have finally managed to complete all of the models for the Omniscient Oracles Battalion.  It was a fun painting challenge and I developed quite a few cool tricks to help get through them in the time span and keep the models to an acceptable quality level. I used a lot of spray can work to get the base coats done and then dry brushed and washed a lot to get the variation in texture. I then went over the top with the brush to pick out specific details,

Converted Lord of Plagues

For the Budget of Sigmar 2 painting challenge I need to do a character and a unit. The unit is going to be my three beasts of nurgle, which are converted and undercoated now. For the character I have my Plague Lord, which was an older model that I have rebased to fit in with the theme of the army. Its converted from the excellent Nurgle Lord kit and the Nurgle Herald kit from the Demon range.

The Omniscient Oracles - a Review

The List: This weekend just gone was the South Coast GT in Portsmouth in the UK and I was there with my Tzeentch Disciples (clearly the new powerhouse) so I thought I would give a quick rundown of how the army performed in the different games and what I thought of the list and the battalion. So first up I took 27 Skyfires and..... Actually I didn't do this!  Instead I based my list around the Omniscient Oracles battalion, which for those that don't know is Kairos and three more Lo

Drycha WiP

I've bought some of the new kits for the Sylvaneth - basically I got one of each except for Allarielle with a goal to get them all painted for Alliance, @Ben event at the start of August. My Sylvaneth have always been a fairly fast army to add to as I tend not to spend a great deal of time on them, although with these new models I will be trying to make sure that I focus on some of the details as the models are too nice to just rush through haphazardly.  I started with Drycha as she was the

Here comes the Ironweld Arsenal...

After my trip to Warhammer world for the AoS open day i was flicking through photos and came across this shot of the Ironweld Arsenal.  So inspired by this I have decided to start my own warmachine host. So far I have a mortar, a hell blaster volley fun and and Organ Gun with crew completed.

Screamers of Tzeentch

I was sorting out the Hobby Room last week and I came across six screamers that I had built, but never done anything else with. So as part of my #365Challenge I decided to prep and paint these as I assumed that they would be quite quick to do. the first thing I did was drill out the bottom of the screamers so that I could insert some 4mm acrylic rod that I had rather than using the usual flying stands. I then wrapped these in masking tape and drilled out some corks to support them so that I coul

The Serpents Lair - Terrain from the Realm of Beasts

Last couple of weeks I've been working on the terrain for the a table I want to set in Ghur. I've been trying to think of new colour schemes for the scenery for the tables as this is Age of Sigmar and there is no real reason to keep things traditional. For this set I decided to use a brown scheme, but throw in some yellows and reds for a lot of the detailing.  Scatter Terrain These were made from some of the the terrain that was donated for the event from Garrisimo on Twitter that

Darkoath Warqueen

I received a Darkoath Warqueen model for my birthday that I want to finish for the Malign Portents painting competition. I decided to try and convert her up a little so that she could lead my Nurgle Slaves to Darkness force. I didn't want to do a really extensive conversion so I did some relatively simple weapon and head swaps. The head was from the Blight King box. The helmet is quite small and if you leave the head off the war queen and cut away the little top knot she has the helmet fitted pe

Darkoath Warqueen complete

I finished the painting on the dark oath war queen. I kept the pallet very limited and mixed some greens into every colour (except the purple) to see how this would turn out. I'm pleased with the finished piece although the undercoat was little rough, and this shows up in some of the close up shots. For some areas (the shield, helmet and armour) this actually works well, but the cloak could definitely be better if it had a smoother base. The freehand was interesting. I was curious to see how it

The Branchwych

I managed yo get this girl painted up quickly for a game I had against some Iron Jaws. I don't normally base my models before painting them, but because the base and the Branchwych have a similar paint style I did them both together, speeding up the paint time. I base coated her with very wet paint so I could wet blend all the browns, gave her a couple of dry brush layers (i need a new dry brush i discovered!) then washed her with various washes. There is no real formula here - I just use very c

Chaos Warriors of Nurgle

These guys are quite fun to do. I have 20 now, and another ten that are base coated. The shields and weapons are taken from the Bonesplitterz kits.  Armor is just a couple of green spray paints and then chipped with silver paint and a sponge. I tend to just paint the rest of the models as quick as possible. The warrior models are old, but they have a certain chaotic charm to them, especially with halberds rather than hand weapons.

Warhammer Achievements Table Maps

For each table at Warhammer Achievements I want to have a map on each table that shows the scenery rules and the secondary objective for that table. Here is the first example that I have put together. To set it up I laid out a board on the living room floor and then stood on the chair with a selfie stick to get the aerial shot. After that it was just a case of importing into photoshop and adding in all the rules and fancy graphics stuff to make it look professional. Hopefully the players will ap

Sylvaneth vs IronJaws

I played my first game with the Sylvaneth recently against my friends Iron Jaws. I only took painted models for this game, so I was a little limited, but I could easily do the 2000 points we had decided on. We also played the comet scenario from the Generals Handbook.  My list consisted of:  Tree lord Ancient (Oaken Armor, an extra spell) Drycha (the spell that generates woods) Branchwych (regrowth) Branch wraith (Acorn of Ages, The Reaping Spell) Spirit of

Sky Fires

I had planned on taking the Sylvaneth to the South Coast GT this year and doing a display board to compete against Mat Lyons and Stev Foote for the Coolest Army award. However a couple of things have scuppered that plan. Firstly my wife gave birth to our second child and, despite us purchasing a nice little SUV for transportation, there is no way that we can get a display board, two children, an army and and a pram. Therefore I decided I could do a new army! Its February right? SCGT isn't till A

Start of some Tzeentch Terrain

To complete my Tzeentch army I have started putting together some Tzeentch magical terrain that will go along with it. To start with I have done a couple of large line of sight blocking pieces. I wanted something warped and un natural looking and I was fortunate enough to find a couple of fish tank items that I thought would work well. I didn't do anything much too them. I cut the bases from MDF and then glued the two pieces down using Mitrebond. I then used a lot of filler to go round the edges

Floating Islands!

Since I finished the Oak of Ages I decided I wanted two more large pieces to go on the table top. Inspired by this piece of art from the Realmgate Wars book I decided to try and create my own freestanding islands with waterfalls. I've been playing around with realistic water a lot so I think it will work well for  the waterfall, however its the constructional elements that will sell these pieces and whether or not I can successfully hide the supports.  I started out with three basic co

Warhammer Achievements Table 1 - The Endless Deserts

Table 1: The Endless DesertsThe first job I set myself was making some themed terrain for the project. I wanted a bunch of small scatter terrain pieces, so I had a quick root around in the bitz box cupboard to see what I could find. I came up with half an Arcane Ruins kit that the wife had bought me and a bunch of Battlefield terrain resin crystals. These, I decided, would do nicelyI glued all the bits of arcane ruins together so I had a selection of pillars and columns and then I went to work w
