Hero Bases Review

I picked up the Hero Bases to have a look at at the weekend. I made three of them up. Generally they come in two or three pieces and there are no instructions, but its pretty easy to assemble them based on the pictures on the back of the box. For my order force I went with the three most generic ones. There is a fairly broad range - some of the bases would definitely look better with chaos models on (luckily I have a few of those knocking around...).

The detail is generally better than the shattered dominion base sets - its more defined and the fact that it is made up of multiple parts seems to give a better finish. As usual they paint up well too. I think if you are after an introduction to scenic bases for characters you could do a lot worse than these. They also make excellent starting points to add extra details too. I added skulls to these, and am also going to add tufts and snow to match my army.

I find the pillar especially but all of them to a degree, draw attention away from the figure. I bought them too but am only planning on using them as objective markers.

Nice looking minis!

I can't help but think that the wierd mix of themes in the base will mean it could take years to get them all used up though.

@Oppenheimer I think you have to be careful about this with any basing. Getting the balance right and the focus is important. A lot of the time with big bases you build them up depending on the model so you can match it in terms of height and positioning. With these you need to choose the model carefully to get the best out of them.

@hobgoblinclub I agree with this! I have been looking for random models to fit each base. I think that I might take the Dark Elf Sorceress that I have in the blog and put her on the big skull one. I also like the Chaos Star one for the free Slaughter Priest that came on the front of the White Dwarf. I am also in the process of rebasing my Frost Heart Pheonix models and I have a random assassin model on there that should suit one of the bases.

Yeah, it works if you've got a bit of collection. There's so many different base sizes of the different factions these days that it makes sets like this difficult to use.

The bases are definitely mixed. One can split the set with friends or if one has several armies.

i have just used one of the bases today for my stormcasts. They really frame characters nicely.

I'm not surprised. I think some of them are definitely designed with the Stormcast in mind!
