Another 10 zombie handgunners ready for the painting table! This makes 20 in total now meeting my 2 battleline for 1k

next steps will be to finish the ship constructs, make my black knight pistoliers and possibly make some shadow warriors using pistols and swords instead of bows. Stealth Zombpirates

So Friday did not have any building or painting due to being at Warhammer world all day alas and Saturday I was also out and busy most of the day.

However I did manage to build valkia the bloody and half a unit of blood warriors. Not much but still something! And that's what counts.

My chaos force is building up nicely. Now just need to get more paint on stuff.

  3. Lightbox
My goal of 9 varanguard is nearing completion... 4 of the 6 i was building are finished! Decided one unit will have daemonforged blades, I know they're kinda crappy but I love the sculpts and I can always count them as ensorcelled weapons sometimes too. That will give me 6 spears and 3 who don't care about charging (If I need someone tough to objective sit)

I've also done more work on the slaughterpriestess, couldn't find a good head with hair to hold so instead she's torn out the spine too!! I'm very happy with it

And finally I have almost finished my lord of slaanesh on foot, some escher legs gave a lovely punkish slaanesh feel may have to shorten the sword though but I do love her dancing esque pose

All in all I'm really happy with how this lot are coming along

So yesterday I didn't get much time to paint but I got some good stuff done. Finally got some paint on my priestess and lady of slaanesh as well as getting a bit of paint on some blight kings and doing more work on archaon! Still plenty left to do though.

(Apologies for picture quality. Light in the room was not the best for photos and I was tired)

So yesterday I began work on some conversions which are all in a WIP state but I'm having fun building. The first is my slaughterpriest/priest to sit atop my warshrine made from a darkoath warqueen. She's getting there and just needs a victims head to hold, his body also needs some greenstuffing.

I shall endeavour to get better pictures once done.
Next we have MORE VARANGUARD. Once these and another box are done I shall have 9 total, because I'm terrible but I love them so much. Not much to say here as they're all non converted besides a tentacle to replace the hand I used for the queen.

Finally we have some very WIP conversions for some lords of slaanesh made from idoneth. One on a demonic steed and another on foot. I'll definitely need some ways to chaos these two up a bit more. Besides just shields. Hopefully they'll look the part when finished and painted!

I shall be doing more work on them tonight so hopefully will be able to show you all soon!!

So today being Christmas and living with my family meant that I didn't have too much painting time today. But I still got a decent amount done!!

First I added blue to my acolytes and even did their scroll which I'm rather proud of.
Now mostly need highlights and basing.

I also managed to wash and drybrush my varanguard, something different compared to my last unit but certainly an interesting style. And a rather different colour scheme.
Need to start getting detailing and other colours on them.

And finally this evening I managed to get started on the big mans horse(monster thing?) himself! Dorghar!!

Still lots to do before friday though!! So shall get cracking again tomorrow.
  7. Lightbox
Today unfortunately I didn't manage to get much done. I've done further drybrushing work on archaon but it won't show up enough in pics to warrent showing really. But I did start getting some metal detail on my green varanguard. Tomorrow shall have to be more productive.
  8. Lightbox
So as per usual I have continued to work on my beloved varanguard. With 2 of squad 1 almost finished and squad 2 now base sprayed caliban green for something a little different. Figure hey why not really differentiate the squads, get that proper multiple bands coming together as everchosen feel.
Whew that's a lot of photos of beefy horsemen!! So let's have something a little different. I started on batch painting my 10 kairic acolytes I'll need, doing them very quick and dirty because I need to teach myself not to spend hours on single footsoldiers who are gonna be surrounded by lots of others and die in droves. They're far from finished but definitely a good start and mostly now just need smaller details, feathers and then highlights.

Though I plan to do more later I am taking a break for now in order to play a game against my dad to try out my list for Friday's Warhammer world 2v2 where me and another man of the same name playing khorne will square off vs my dad and another guy playing bonesplitters & ironjawz. (Fun fact, all 4 of us have names beginning with J)

    Wish me luck!
  9. Lightbox
On friday I did a little bit of building a nurgle gnarlmaw which isn't worth a photo really. On Saturday I was too busy tabletop roleplaying for painting alas but today... Today I have continued to give glorious cover to the strongest of all chaos warriors!! THE VARANGUARD!

This first squad is slowly but surely getting there. I can only hope it'll prove quicker for other ones so I can try and get them ready for friday!!

  10. Lightbox
So today wasn't an hour of painting... It was more a half hour of building / converting as between picking up a doctor's note and wargaming I didn't have much time today or motivation to paint. But hey any hobby is better than none

Today I finally built up a rider for my third Varanguard as I had used a rider ages back to make a chaos lord. This new lord is pretty simple, he's the manticore sorcerer lord with a shield. But he looks very nice on his steed and makes a great tzeentchy varanguard.

The steed I lost a head for somehow so he instead had a cold one head with some greenstuffed armour to make him fit in more which I think looks nice He also had a great first showing tonight when his unit charged in and butchered mazarral the butcher!! Go team!

  11. Lightbox
So for today I kitbashed some DoK khinerae into some shield maiden-esque hellstriders of slaanesh as well as started slapping some paint onto my slaaneshi Varanguard.

I think they're coming out quite nicely it's nice to get more of my chaos stuff sorted too. Archaon and the Varanguard have really been giving me enjoyment doing chaos.

  12. Lightbox
So making up for being ill for like 10 days by painting up this beauty. Still got his hair to do and no doubt many other details but considering he started as grey plastic today I'm pretty happy with my work.

Absolutely lovely model to work with though I am terrified of painting Dorghar... That boy is big!

  13. Lightbox
So I decided to do a small story to start fleshing out some ideas for my Ashen City characters, I feel that since chaos is always represented as hate filled people who abandoned their humanity that it would be quite fun to try and explore those that couldn't quite fully abandon everything that made them then, to explore how they deal with repressing that tug of it. I figured it would make for better protagonists to not be completely devoid of humanity and emotions. This is very much a first draft and subject to change. At the end of the day chaos is still a collection of people, and especially an empire couldn't just run itself on greed hatred and strife alone.

Maeve stared at the mirror, she could see her reflection staring back at her bearing the same fair skin, short black bob of hair and athletic frame. The reflection even wore her clothes and mirrored her movements as one might expect but it was the red eyes instead of her usual amber that drew her gaze coupled with the wicked smirk the reflection bore even as Maeve herself frowned. She should have been used to seeing this but it always made her heart sank when she was force to remember that her mind and body were not fully her own and hadn't been for longer than she could remember. The daemon inside laughed silently at her from the mirror, taunting her as it often enjoyed doing. Maeve's vision turned red, with a yell she unsheathed one of the many daggers hidden in her dress and hurled it at the mirror, the crackling red crystal blade shattering the glass on impact.
"Is everything alright in there your highness?" came the deep voice of one of her door guards.
"Send a raven to the fighting pits, tell them to ready their best fighter. I need to kill something." Maeve yelled back. She took a deep breath, composing herself before beginning to head to her personal armoury, rage and bloodshed should sate the daemon for now and at the very least a good fight always helped her feel alive.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Maeve ran a bloody hand through her hair, smoothing it back as she leant against the wall. She couldn't keep the grin from her face, her heart was still racing from the match but as alive as it made her feel she couldn't quite quell the sadness in the back of her head, the lamentations for the loss of her humanity. She wondered why she still felt this way, she was so sure that most of the warriors within her empire had long since abandoned their hearts without regret but for her she could never quite let go of those feelings no matter how blessed she felt by the gods and no matter how many empires she burned to the ground. The door creaked open and Maeve looked over to see a large armoured woman enter, spiked of red crystal jutted out from her armour accompanied by a large horn of the same substance implanted into her. The woman gave a nod to Maeve and moved to sit next to her.
"I saw the fight." the woman said, her voice rough and deep far unlike the softer more pleasing tones that Maeve would speak in though this woman was a fighter rather than Orator. "You scared the ****** out of some of the new bloods when you disembowelled the guy, they're gonna need to toughen up if they ever want to see real combat."
Maeve gave a grin to the woman, nudging her with her shoulder "That it? No 'well done Maeve you're the quickest blade I've ever seen', just 'recruits these days are soft'" she joked, mocking the other womans gruffer tones.
The horned woman just frowned at her, if anyone else spoke to her like that she'd have ripped their arms off and beat them to death with them but she had history with Maeve, the closest thing she had to a friend. She knew full well how much of a weakness it was to care for another, especially one who could resurface the humanity she buried long ago but she also couldn't do without the woman, she found the reigniting of emotions to be almost addictive.
"Adira..." Maeve began, voice faltering slightly as she looked toward the other woman "I saw her again... the Daemon." she said, voice a mixture of worry and anger "It's getting more frequent, the ****** really wants control."
Adira simply looked at Maeve and shrugged "You'll just have to keep fighting it." she paused, sighing a little "If it takes control I'll kick its teeth in till you're you again... you know that." her voice quieting a little, as if part of her was ashamed with wanting to help someone "Just... don't let anyone else know you're like this." she said, almost scolding in her tone "You'll look weak and then there'll be a coup. And I guess.... I'd rather not see you killed by some muscle headed upstart who doesn't know how to run an empire."
Maeve gave a soft smile to the woman "Thanks..." she said quietly as Adira simply gave a grunt in response and began to move off. She sat in contemplation for a few more moments, she had to keep up the persona of the Emberqueen, the fierce and unshakeable leader both charismatic and brutal enough to rule. If anyone besides Adira knew about her doubts, about her weaknesses she'd likely have a knife in the back and watch all she had built turn to ashes. She'd come too far and sacrificed too much to lose it all now and she wasn't going to let anything stand in her way.

First thing I'll say is I wish the kit could do rider separate easily. Though was really hard to keep it separate with all my modifications.

Anyhoo I'm quite happy with how this one has turned out. Even if my super thin drill bits are awful and a pain to use. I do plan to add some liquid drystuff onto her mechanical arm in order to make it fit in a bit better. Kinda figured it'd be a fun touch for chamon idoneth. Gonna paont metallic scales and bits of metal encroaching on the skin like tendrils of corruption as they live too far from the centre of the realm to be safe from its altering influence (which is also why mermaid tails are going to be a feature like on this model)

  15. Lightbox
So as anyone who knows me will know I often hop between projects a lot ans I'm awful and getting painting finished. But I'm trying to change that.

My golden horde topic over on painting and modelling shows some of my more recent conversions which I need to get painted up, along with my daughters of khaine melusai.

Though recently I've mostly been working on my dark eldar for 40k and pretty happy with my archon. I think my skills are really improving!!

  16. Lightbox
The first piece of my new idoneth project is coming along very nicely! Still not finished as i need to add more washes, highlights and then do my base.

The idea is they're from outer realms of chamon and so the transmuting magics have begun to affect them, causing metal to seep into their bodies, replacing limbs and the like. Almost like a metallic infection.

Anvil of Apotheosis, also known as the one thing that was missimg from AoS for me. When I used to play 40k my favourite thing was always making my heroes and converting them up with their custom loadouts and what was cool. So of course as soon as the anvil dropped I quickly sprang into action making, and painting a hero for my daughters of khaine using a miniature I had wanted an excuse to get for ages (jain zar).

Selaina Ravenheart, my ranged rampaging head of my daughters of khaine force now named 'The Shadows Dance'. Warscroll is to 20dp and may be changed but its a good idea of how I envisage her for now as the ranged commander overseeing the battle firing arrows of death as she leads her  cults in their dance of death spraying blood across a battlefield like paint on a canvas.

She has been a fun project and is definitely a stand out and unique looking character in the army, armed with her magic bow, her 80's glam rock hair and a go getting attitude. You may notice a magnet in one of those photos, that was to test the strength of the magnet hidden underneath the base. For campaigns or games where she eventually reaches higher DP I worried she'd be lonely on that big base on her own. So I made her a friend, which those who have seen previous entries on my DoK may notice that he's a much smaller version of my bone snake avatar of khaine. And both the big and now little ones were scratchbuilt entirely from skulls from the gw skull kit.

I look forward to getting him painted too Aaaaaand getting a bunch of girls ready for our Anvil of Apotheosis hero led path to glory narrative campaign that's being put together. Should be fun to begin telling the story of the shadows dance.

So anyone who knows me is going to read this title, let out a laugh and say "What? Lightbox paint to a deadline? That'll never happen!" and well... I mean I do have a track record that would prove them right but regardless I'm making this pledge. Even set myself twice a month phone reminders to keep up with it.
    THE PLAN:
So I'm deciding to start a new conversion project for this one and that projects theme is going to be: SEA AELVES!
And I don't just mean idoneth... i mean various aelves in blues, greens and turquoises led by a badass mermaid. Now I bet you're wondering "Lightbox how will you make a mermaid?" WELL BEHOLD MY AMAZING MICROSOFT PAINT SKILLS TO SHOW YOU THE MOCKUP OF HOW I PLAN TO DO IT!!
May alternatively use a demonette head or greenstuff some hair onto it. Colours will of course be BLUE and frankly if I can build it with just the one fish tail I'd prefer that to the 7 billion.
She will likely be joined by a mix of idoneth and wood aelves as I have some of the latter and I do actually plan on using semi-converted idoneth as the bulk of my force. But it should be fun to play with the colour pallette and get a really nice blue army as I haven't painted something like that in a long while
I'll try and keep my progress updated on here and hopefully we'll see this project go from amazing MS paint edits to real life well painted models!
  19. Lightbox
After an evening of being unsure how to proceed and then just saying '****** it I'll work it out as I go' I finished my conversion of Brokk (well i may add more shadowy tendrils but probably not) I repositioned his arms, gave him a tricorn (because -all- of my shadow pirate heroes need tricorns) and gave him a nice shadow doppleganger friend just like my admiral (since I'm probably no longer gonna always want to go dopple cloak on my admiral giving all my heroes dopples makes it more of a ulgu theme thing than a relic thing) and his little minion holds his cannon because I felt it looked a bit too busy beneath the balloon (everything on brokk is so compacted into a small space, especially with his original pose). I'm looking forward to painting him up soon too

  20. Lightbox
So finally finished (besides her base) the horse mounted version of my vampiric big boss Cassia. Still not sure on a full name though I'm sure I'll think of something! (Any ideas do let me know!)

And of course it wouldn't be Cassia if she wasn't covered in the blood of her victims... She will be getting her inaugural games in tomorrow as we practice for our path to glory firestorm campaign and I will try to post some battle reports here. Hopefully with pictures though most will be unpainted alas... (Sorry, it's a long process!)

Anyway here she is in all her gory glory!

  21. Lightbox
So today I had a lot of fun painting up my vampire to sit on her zombie dragon
Need a good surname for her but I'm getting there. Then it'll be onto actually creating some background for my soulblight army. She's already going to have the nickname of 'the bat queen' for employing large use of her bat-like gargoyle followers (counts as fell-bat conversion, pic below) and of course regular bats (gonna have to get myself bat swarms just because they can be useful for protection)
She will also have a horse mounted model that will be painted up later but I'm proud of how she's turned out. Good fun applying the blood too obviously she's just a messy eater.

Vindenspite Magical gateway city of ageless swashbucklers This wonderful city name and tagline was gained from Army Name Generator - Cities of Sigmar — Realm of Plastic and once I saw it I knew it would be an amazing fit for working off lore for my next project, the project that started off simply as 'Aelves with guns'. I have put together some initial lore ideas on this city which will be cleaned up and expanded upon in later entries as I continue on this project.
    Vindenspite:
The city of Vindenspite borders on the edges of civilisation within Ghyran, the abundance of life energy deeply affecting the citizens and the world around it without being so strong as to cause dangerous mutations or corruptions as much of the outer reaches of the realms will. The inhabitants of Vindenspite find that for the most part the concentration of life energy causes them to become near immortal, the ravages of time barely registering against their now heavily warped lifespans. Vindenspite itself is a strange sight to some, a city that consists mostly of Aelves though due to old ties with the Ironweld Arsenals bears a heavy assortment of artillery and firearms as opposed to the more traditional bows that many Aelves from Azyr once bore.
The city is led by an enigmatic figure known as 'The Frostqueen', a Aelven woman believed to have been one of the original founders of Vindenspite and bears such a mastery over ice magic that magical frost coats the very ground she treads.
The citizens of Vindenspite are not ones to revere gods like many other mortals, indeed they have even been known to outright oppose the wishes of many gods of the mortal realms in spite of the danger such acts could put them in. The Vindennians do not worship any forces per say but they have a great reverence for what they believe to be the duality of life itself: the warmth and the cold. The sun and moon are often used as symbols to represent these two along with day and night, they believe that life relies on a harmonious balance of these too forces after all too much heat will burn to ashes and too much cold with freeze like a statue and as such those who follow in the pursuits of the arcane will often seek to master fire or ice magic as their first steps.
    The Glimmergate:
Vindenspite itself is built around a large magical gateway known as the Glimmergate, this gate is said to lead to the only safe passage through the outer edges of Ghyran and into a place of great arcane power known as the 'Frostflame glade' where the dual forces of fire and ice are said to coalesce into one unified power. To say the journey is safe however is certainly a stretch of the truth, it is believed to be the only way to venture further into the edges without being corrupted and destroyed by the powerful magics of Ghyran that no mortal could truly withstand but it still is fraught with perils, the gate itself is fickle about who it allows to pass through it. Those chosen will receive a vision in the night and be able to pass safely, those who are not chosen however find themselves grabbed by lashing roots and dragged underground where they become fertiliser for the forests. Many who pass through do not return and those who do struggle to speak of what they encountered within, their memories of the place twisted and muddled. The survivors often tell of deadly spirits some who will tear apart the unwary and others who will try to tempt them off the safe paths to never be heard from again whilst other reports claim that those too weak of mind will find themselves having walked for days only to end up back at the gate itself.
    Military:
Unlike some cities Vindenspite does not hold the usual rank and file, heavily disciplined military approach instead often the warriors of the city fight as cunning skirmishers utilising magical blessings on their firearms to unleash volleys of frost and flame with terrifying accuracy whilst great war machines and beast-riding knights plow through enemy formations with great aggression. Battle is one of the most common ways for a Vindennian to die which for many of these effectively immortal beings is a terrifying thought but most of those in the military are of a far different mindset, the danger of battle being a thrilling rush of adrenaline as they fight against all odds to make it out alive with great stories to tell. Vindenspite itself has a mixed reputation due to this, some think they are arrogant or psychotic and others call their fighting style that of unsporting rogues whilst Vindennians themselves like to think themself the dashing swashbuckler deftly slaying an enemy with wit, skill and far more finesse than the usual depressed, grizzled line infantry of mortal soldiers.
It comes as no surprise that many regiments of Vindennian soliders are hired as mercenaries by others within the loose conglomeration of 'order' and they have recently taken to journeying alongside stormcast in dawnbringer crusades across the realms. It is said that those of the city are searching for something important and valuable and that is why they hire themselves out into various other realms and nations.

  23. Lightbox
    The Crimson Watch
Amongst the various soldiers of fortune and swashbuckling warriors in Vindenspite there is one regiment that stands above all others in both renown and skill, the Crimson Watch. The Crimson Watch is a sisterhood whose origins date back to the founding of Vindenspite, a single squad of Aelves who were the loyal retinue of the Frostqueen herself. This sisterhood train using rifles that magically enhance their shot with flame and frost, working to unleash their volleys with deadly accuracy to stop any would-be attackers before they have a chance to get close. Due to their high reputation and peerless skill squads from the Crimson Watch will almost always be hired into Vindennian armies for both attack and defence.

    The Silent Ones
Not all who return from the Glimmergate do so without the experience having drastically changed them, whilst many survivors find themselves shattered or confused from the experience of having failed to reach the frostflame glade some return as beings known as 'The Silent ones'. These people return with lips sewn shut and a dullness in their eyes, empty husks that no longer eat, drink or sleep almost like walking corpses however this is only their 'dormant' state. It was not long after the first Silent Ones began appearing that their true purpose became known, as when the scent of blood is carried in the ear and the sound of battle rings around these Silent Ones spring to life with the fury of a raging tempest. Armed with deadly spears and riding great stags of the forest these beings have been put into units of raging beserkers that smash into the ranks of foes with superhuman strength and ferocity.

In game terms the Crimson Watch will be Sisters of the Watch and the Silent Ones will be wild riders.
  24. Lightbox
Within the city of Vindenspite there are occasions when those who are chosen by the Glimmergate emerge victorious, having made it through to the Frostflame glade and been forever changed by their experience. These individuals emerge back into the city wielding a mastery over either fire or ice alongside a powerful elemental beast that has formed an inseparable bond with them. These warriors are magically sworn to an oath of silence, never being able to speak and risk giving away the secrets of the Glimmergate.
These warriors are split into either the Flamesworn or the Frostguard and possess distinct and powerful fighting styles befitting of their newfound abilities. the Flamesworn possess an inhuman speed, running into battle alongside great four legged beasts made of fire itself and wielding enchanted halberds or lances as they crash through enemy lines in an unstoppable fury befitting their new fiery temperments. The frostguard however are much more reserved, they take to the skies atop great demi-drakes made of the coldest ice and wield enchanted firearms working in concert with their mounts to freeze entire flanks of enemy troops.
Together these warrior sects are known as the Chosen and are highly prized within a Vindenspite army, the power they lend being able to turn the tides of battle.

In game terms the flamesworn will count as Demigryph knights whilst the Frostguard will be Gyrocopters
