  1. Starseer is nerfed into the ground. The other two are amazing. Give a unit reroll saves from the prayer and / or - 1 to be hit. It really helps. I've been running starpriest + geminids in every single list I make anymore. If I was running anything saurus related the regular priest would also be an auto include.

  2. But when you summon 30 skinks you are summoning 3x10 skinks. Limiting the damage you can take to blocks of 10. This is strictly better than a 20 block of warriors. Its more wounds per summoning point and better unit sizes for mitigating damage and staying on the point.

  3. Yes, agreed. Bolt spitters, but I'd say it matters little enough its preference. I think 10 and 40 are the only correct answers for unit size. Since I use them for objective capturing I only do blocks of 10. With a 6 up save you aren't surviving first contact with anything. The true power in MSU sizes is retreat. 2 units of 10, 1 is guaranteed to retreat out of combat. It's real hard to get bodies off objectives.

In that same regard since the opponent knows they will retreat 10 isn't a juicy first round activation target but 40 is. A lot of times that 10 block will be ignored.

  4. That is close to what I tried -- I just don't see how it works well, it doesn't do anything well. Its subpar at board control and being killy. You never really utilize the strength of the deep strike as you already get that in shadowstrike etc. Even a 6 inch charge isn't always going to make it.

Speaking of shadow this is what I am running at an upcoming event

    realm - Shyish

    Slann - General

    Skink Starpriest

    Knight-Incantor

    Eotg - Wraithbow artifact

    Eotg - Goblet of draining

    5x 10 Skinks

    1 x 4 razordons

    1 x 6 Ripperdactyls

    Shadowstrike

    Everblaze

    Geminids

    Quicksilver

    --------------------------

The list is all about mortal wound sniping the enemy heros and taking board control with skinks.

Turn 1 you can fish for d6 mortal wounds from each engine OR more ripperdactyls to get extra bloat toads for your boys in the sky. In a perfect world Goblet of draining will always do d6 mortals and wraithbow is just within 18 of its target. Knight gives an auto unbind, flaks for mortal wounds, a great spell, and everblaze. Geminids is 18 inch + 8 (cast it from slann). Quick silver swords is shorter but your Starpriest runs 2d6 for Shadowstrike so you should be in range of something. Teleport razordons to take out chaff and bring the rippers down if you really need to finish off something the mortal wounds didn't.

    -----

    rest of game -

Geminids giving -1 to hit and starpriest giving -1 to hit can really turn an enemy unit off for the round. Eotg can go into melee if needed, otherwise its best to use their utility to fish for mortal wounds and summons. Slann will be doing slann stuff -- mostly summoning. Skinks will be going for the gold. Ripperdactyls will be dead but if you have frogs around the map summoning more in is pretty great.

  5. @Tea Rex Could be good -- alternatively you can buy the shadow strike box and make a great 1k list.

    Skink Starpriest -- general
    1x 6 rippers
    Shadowstrike
Skinks to fill out the game
Normally I'd say a unit of 4 razordons here but you specified cheap :)

Also comes with carno or trog, throw that in there too!

Eventually I will build up to the Dracothian Tail with Shadowstrike mixed in. Thats what actually took 2nd at the tournament, and I am not trying to copy him or anything but its just effective and I like it.

Could you share that list? I tried that style 2 months ago at a tournament and lost big time, didn't pick up a single game. I decided the cost of running shadowstrike was just to high. You lose almost 1/4th of an army to gain 1 drop status. Deep strike is really whatever to me as we don't have much worth deep striking, when shadowstrike can do it better. Anyway I'd like to compare notes with that list if you don't mind.

Darkling Covens and  Wanderers both have Allegiance abilities in the GHB, and several other factions have pitched battle profiles with conditional battleline, so they are very much "part of the game".

I think LoN, BoC, Glompsite, And Skaven all being release within 1 year, covering many (most?) of the non-covered models shows GW is giving a good bit of priority getting all of their in production models covered by battletomes.  Yes they are also refreshing the earliest battletomes at the same time / in between, but I don't think it's accurate at all to say they have "priority", if anything the contrary, it seems like "non-battletome" factions have been getting priority lately.

Yeah and that’s what I was referencing. Wanderers - specifically. Definitely deserve a battletome but saying aelves is like saying dwarves. Neither is a faction at the moment. I agree they should get the LoN style treatment but that would be a new faction. It is my opinion gw should focus its efforts on existing factions.

unless you are writing battletomes telling me what is accurate or in accurate is just as wrong as any other assumption.  I could easily argue the other way and say that stormcast, Khorne, and flesh eater courts proves gw is focusing more on existing factions. Which is just as dumb to say.

    That hurts man...

Sorry... I really didn't mean that as a personal slight against you. Aelves aren't part of the game, even as an index... yet, so they would be a new faction not one waiting to be caught up on. That being said I truly do wish GW would be clear about these things to the player base, especially those with old models left in limbo. I think we all know its coming and rounding up of sub factions etc. but I would still hope every 1.0 army gets new rules first and every index army gets care.

Aelf player here. No BT yet.

    Get in line!  😄

The only difference is as a 1.0 army we are a supported and real faction. So there is a higher expectation there. If only there was some kind of road map we’re gw could guarantee a army is supported or unsupported instead of raw hope

The current Tzeentch book is ... not accurate. It doesn't contain the new summoning rules, and almost every warscroll has had a lot of errata. I think Kairic Acolytes might legitimately be the only unchanged warscroll (and that's only because they should have been and I think GW forgot). Maybe the blue scribes?

Several traits don't do what the book says anymore, same with spells.

    Seraphon says get in line.

    Oldest current battletome

    All warscrolls are wrong

Current summon spells are all wrong

    New summoning mechanic in GHB

Several models nerfed into non-existence -- rip Skink Starseer

I would suspect that maybe Dreadfane may be the same Underworlds fans as Blitz Bowl is to me(though Underworlds has a lot less to simplify, so they may risk it being too watered down)

Actually while streamlined underworlds is a very high skill cap game. You generally aren't going to beat a better player despite drawing cards and dice rolls. This is measured in that the best players continue to win tournaments despite the warbands they choose or the given day they go. This game introduces random effects such as meteors and other forms of environmental effects that kind of minimize the skill dimension of the game. Along with a prebuilt deck that minimizes any kind of 'power creep' from an optimized deck.

The skill gap is actually a big problem with the current game, its hard for new players to get into if their friends play competitively. I was thinking of getting the game and applying the environmental effects and other skill reducing mechanics to the base game as an entry point to teach my board gamer friends.

  13. With shadow strike I find the strength of the list to be mobility and board control. Which usually equates to 4x4 razordons and isnt a cheap option.

I think the best shadow strike list I've seen outside 4x4 razordons is the LVO list that runs shadow strike + 3x EOTG. If it was my list I would take a page out of the U.K. masters list and run the 3x engine of the god with extra mortal wound artifacts from Shyish.

@Sugar Maple Give the 40 skinks a try but 2 points. 8 inch reach on the attacks is actually quite difficult in a 40 blob if you plan to get all your ranged attack in and being wholly within an astrolith is also difficult. Also battleshock is going to be really tough on 40 skinks.

Let me know how everblaze goes, I've just started messing with allies and tried everblaze in a different list and didn't like it. I can see it being really good in shadowstrike since it needs a source of mortal wounds.

@Bryan I Guess I hate our bastilidons outside thunderquake. In thunderquake they are amazing in my opinion. Go ahead and give it a try but I was using 1 in shadow strike last tournament I went to and it never ceased to disappoint. The attacks are spikey, without rerolls you won't deal much damage. Its tanky but so are skink roadblocks when placed well. I personally would rather take 2x celestar balista as its just better. Also very spikey damage but more wounds, more rend, better attack profile and 80 points cheaper :) I would use those extra 80 points to get cogs for carno + dread saurian crucial charge rounds. In other turns you can leave it set to give bonus summoning points, not bad!

I should mention for the Saurus Oldblood on Carnosaur take a rend artifact like the 3 rend one. That way you can stack attacks and just hit like a truck. I never see this done in lists but personally find it to be amazing. Say turn 3, 3 CP spent - 9 3/3/ -3 attacks dealing D3 damage. I think this is better than Gryph-feather Charm  but that is 100% personal choice. With our teleport its just so strong. Don't forget to use the Skink Starpriesto buff the jaws on that dread saurian! Another great and dangerous attack

What do people think of running a Dracoth with the same suite as the exploding Stardrake? A Staunch/Lantern/Molten Helm/Azyrite Halo Dracoth is, of course, 9 less wounds and doesn't have some of the abilities (table wide MWs, bite attack), but it frees up 340 points compared to the Stardrake. 7 wounds on a 2+RR will still take around 250 wounds to kill on average, though it is much more susceptible to MWs popping it out.

Still, as a mini-bomb and not a full centerpiece of the list, you could buff it up and chuck it into Skeletons, Grots, Gors, etc and just watch them blow themselves up. And then you'd also have points left over to bring more to the table than just the minimal support pieces, which I think might make a more TAC list than the traditional Stardrake build.

Con you missed: you won’t have a star drake on the field. In seriousness I think it’s a lethal combo that will still work but does it cost to much investment compared to the points? That I don’t know but math hammer wizards could solve it.

I didnt say he was a poor general. I said bringing in a non-optimal mounted heroes list is going to bring disadvantages which means if he faces a similar skilled opponent and they have optimal list then he should be losing whereas if his list was optimal it would be closer.  Once you get to a certain level everything counts.

How can you imply his opponents aren't similar skill levels? They are the best players at the LVO. Also not sure what you mean by it would be closer, he hasn't dropped a game in 7 games and it looks like hes about to win game 8 and take the whole event as the only undefeated player.

  16. 3 hours ago, Graywater said:

Yeah, he ran ghoul patrol here, but he also saw success earlier with different builds too. And I wouldn't say that he got lucky on opponents, because he faced a real mix of different armies to get to the top, including last year's winner. Between his results so far, and previous results, I feel it is safe to say that bill is a very skilled player getting the most out of a list he is quite familiar with.

Adding to that I don't see how luck can play into opponents on day 3 top 8 at all. These are the 8 best players at the event and hes been defending his bid for 1st all day.

I am new to seraphon so take what I say with a grain of salt. What does 2 ballistas give you that 4 more razordons and a triumph bid don't besides the long range shooting?

Also with so many engines is it worth it to not use great rememberer and instead give your slann curse of fates so that whichever you "curse" you're rolling 4 dice picking three and then increasing or decreasing that number by 1? Seems pretty good to almost choose which option you want.

Curse of fates sounds like a great idea. I am absolutely going to try that out. I am just playing around with ballistas as they are really strong. I am not sure yet if they are better than more razordons or not. I've just been into trying to fit allies into my lists to see how it plays out. So far knight incantor + everblaze comet has been the most fun. Another benefit to curse of fates is 2x summon star light, which is never a bad spell!

Another option might be to drop the ballista for more skinks and geminids so the battle line would be 20, 10, 10. However back to the point of curse of fates you could bring a lot of skinks on if you didn't have targets that needed mortal wounds.

  18. @Bryan I Guess I feel like banner doesn't work in that list. The point of the list is really to go for quick board control and score objectives early. The razordons are really there to split up and sit about 12 off the objectives to put the opponent into a hard choice of eliminating them or taking the point. I think if I made room for a banner I would take a third set of four razordons instead. That being said I really really didn't like the evos in the list. I've been really enjoying the 3x eotg lists a lot and I think my next game will look something like this.

    Leaders:
Engine of the Gods x 3

    Skink Starpriest
    Slann Starmaster

    Battlelines:
    Skinks x 10
    Skinks x 10
    Skinks x 10

    Artillery:
    Razordons x 4
    Celestar Ballista

    Celestar Ballista

    Other Units:
    Ripperdactyl Riders x6

    Battalions

    Shadowstrike Starhost

    2000 points
