mrstimpson38
Thanks, man. Hopefully it still looks good once I wash the model. If it doesn't, I may try out the highlighting stage over the wash and see how that looks. I'm new to the fine detail stuff, so the silver suggestion is super appreciated. I'll definitely try it out on an Ardboy and see how it looks. I believe I only have Ironbreaker to work with at the moment. I may try that out before I pick up another pot of paint to see how it looks (I've been purchasing so many pots the last couple weeks!). Edit: Have you posted pictures of your Brutes yet? Soulsmith
I would usually reserve edge highlights as the last stage of what you're working on. But they should remain visible, see what you prefer. As a texture, metal should have a sharp, brighter edge. Helps with the illusion that it isn't plastic [emoji6] basically, on bronze or gold, a really light drybrush of brightest silver makes them look more real. I use runefang, and also use it on my weapons to create scratched, used blades. Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
mrstimpson38
I think I may have backed myself into a corner with my use of Warplock Bronze when it comes to edge highlighting the weapon blades. As you can see, that looks terrible. I'm not sure if there's a metallic that is darker than Sycorax Bronze, but slightly lighter than Warplock Bronze. I'll have to do some research and see what I can dig up. Any suggestions? Edit: All systems go with Balthazar Gold.
Soulsmith
I really like the gold hightlighting, it works really well. Try out the silver sparingly on the other brass elements on the armour.Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
mrstimpson38
I'll give that a go next time I paint. Thanks for the suggestion, mate! Someone else suggested I mix a little of the lighter brass into the silver to bring the tone a little in line with the rest of the model, so I'll try both ways. Here's a little before work project! Edit: Looking at it now, all the skulls will form a nice L shape. They look like they belong there. On top of that, I just purchased 500 resin skulls for the bases! Skulls for Mork! mrstimpson38
So I got to thinking this weekend... "If my Gore-Boss was going to be my general, what should I do to show that on the table?" ...and that got me to bust out a few kits here and there to see what I could do to make Hellthrak Doomdriver a right proppa Gore-Boss. So here's a sneak peak at Hellthrak Doomdriver, and companion, Bloodscreech - Bane of Chaos. I'm working on some very fun lore, but I'm going to hold onto it for a little while till it's in a better place to share. Here's a preview... The Hellgruntaz once had a mighty Megaboss, but as things went from bad, to worse in the Age of Heroes, the once mighty clan lost it's proud leader to the wrath of one of Khorne's mightiest disciples. In the wake of this disaster, Hellthrak Doomdriver, the most cunnin' of The Hellgruntaz Gore-Gruntaz Big-Bosses picked up their beloved chieftain's axe. In the midst of battle, over the clamor of death and carnage, all Orruks of The Hellgruntaz tribe screamed their approval with a chant of "Gore-Boss, Gore-Boss, Gore-Boss!" So began the reign of Hellthrak.
Soulsmith
Love it. The goblin on the back looks like he should be holding on though What I would say, is see if you can bend/heat and bend the tails on the banner. They aren't moving, yet his head tassle is. Goodapollo4
These are just some fantastic conversions! I love how you've thought out enough lore/narrative to basically kitbash whatever Khorney bits you can find into the Orruks. The grot above is a great touch, can't wait to see everything get painted! mrstimpson38
Thank you for the compliments, guys! I was worried I may have overdone it on the Gore-Boss, but your kind words helped put me at ease. @Soulsmith Oh man... I can't believe I didn't think of that! I primed him yesterday before I checked back in. Now I'm kind of kicking myself in the butt. Man... you think it would be worth stripping him just to do that? And as for the Grot... trust me, he's the most bad-ass Grot in the history of Warhammer. He could do flips on the back of that Grunta while riding at top speed. Don't doubt Bloodscreech - Bane of Chaos! @Goodapollo4 I'm excited to get them painted. I'm a little up in the air as to how I'm going to do the Gruntas, but I'm leaning on black with grey highlights. I won't know till I put brush to plastic! mrstimpson38
So, here is a unit of Ardboyz and Brutes I've modified in various ways. For the Ardboyz I've used pieces of Brutes, Savage Orruks, and 40k Orks. And the Brutes have been done with bits from Savage Orruks, Gore-Gruntaz, and Mighty Skull Crushers. I'm happy with all of them for the most part. There are a couple of things that didn't quite represent what I had in my head, but overall they look nice. Once I put some paint on them I'll start doing group photos that are worth more than this one... That's a Meganob, Weirdnob, Warnob, 2 units of Brutes, 2 units of Boyz, and a unit of Gruntaz with Hellthrak and Bloodscreech at the helm. Now I'll be painting like a mad man with the optimistic plan to have them all painted by the end of March. That will give me 1k to start with, and the only thing I'll need to finish my 2k list is another Meganob, 2 units of Brutes, and a unit of Gruntaz. I also have a blog post in the works that is centered on model diversification. Importance, techniques, etc. I feel like my work on The Hellgruntaz has given me quite a bit of insight into making each model unique, and I'd like to share my experience, tools, and techniques with everyone to hopefully benefit others with similar desires. That's it for now. Expect more painted figures in the future. Especially now that I have all my recipes finished for all steps, including edge highlighting! It's slightly toned down from the last one I shared, but I feel it fits the theme both visually and thematically a lot more than the brighter highlight I previewed a couple posts back. Let me know what you think of some of my conversions/kit bashes! I love every piece of input I've received from this thread, and it has been a huge motivator these last couple weeks! Edit: I purchased 500 of these... My bases are going to be full of them...
mrstimpson38
So I decided to treat myself to painting a Brute to see what I could do with a model that's a little more detailed than an Ardboy. I tried a few new things on this guy, some of which I'm going to forgo in the future. The things I'm going to skip are the double wash of Sepia. One's enough for the look I'm going for. I'll also ease back on the gold on the Warplock. A little looks great (the weapon blade), but too much looks bad (the shoulder blade). I'm also going to reconsider the green I used in the facial highlight. It's too... lime, I think? I may try a paler green next to see how that goes. Some of the things I'll be keeping are the edge highlights all around. I may make some of them a little more pronounced (leather straps, armour), and some of them a little less (shoulder pad, face). But overall I feel like I'm zeroing in on what I want. Soulsmith
Looking good. Good job on the strap highlights, I usually can't be fussed in the end and just drybrush them
mrstimpson38
@Soulsmith Thanks, bud. I should probably dry-brush them because I have so much to paint, but I figure I may as well take it slow for the practice. I did dry-brush the weapon blade because it was so large and pretty isolated from everything else, but it's far from the practice I'd like to be getting. I may resort to dry-brushing the Gore-Gruntaz fur, but we'll see what happens when we get there!
Soulsmith
Yeah I usually do a bit more than necessary for the test model. I drybrush all my weapons, away from the edge to create scratching. I'd definitely drybrush the fur, you'll be there forever otherwise.
mrstimpson38
Meganob upgrade kit! Locking in this list to get 1k painted on the table... mrstimpson38
Sticky-tac dry fit test! With a picture of my Brute for color approximation. Edit: What size base does a Daemon Prince go on? I could see adding wings to this and using it as a Flying, double Axe of Khorne Daemon Prince in 40k. Furious
That Megaboss looks really, really cool. Have you considered using this army as a dual army? Like - try running it as a Khorne proxy, ie using you Megaboss as a Daemon Prince, Ardboyz as Chaos Warriors, Gruntaz as Bloodcrushers etc? I know that goes against the fluff you made already - it would be more like an Orruk faction corrupted by Khorne rather than fighting against - but it might be fun, none-the-less. Warboss Gorbolg
I like the interspersing of the Brute weapons on the Ardboys. Think I will try something similar to differentiate the Ardboys bosses from rank and file.
mrstimpson38
@Furious I haven't thought about that, but I can see how it would look awesome on the table! Ardboyz for Warriors, Brutes for Chosen, Meganob for a DP, Weirdnob for a (ducks while saying this) Chaos Sorcerer Lord. Then splice in the stuff below and bam, fun proxy army that would look stellar on the table.
Tuluth
You're in luck. Both the Deamon Prince, and Be'lakor both go on a 60mm round... same as a standard Megaboss.
