Modifiers and mounts

ByronicHero

Question

Hello,

If an ability applies a modifier to a 'unit', for example +1 to hit, would that apply to both the rider and mount if the target unit was such that it had attack profiles for both. For example, does Chaos Lord on Demonic Mount's CA apply the modifier to both the knight and the steed? If so, are there any instances where this wouldn't be the case? I have been playing that such buffs do affect both and nobody has corrected me, but just wanted to be completely sure.

Many thanks in advance.

Yes, such abilities will also affect the mount. The only thing that doesn't affect the mounts are: 1) Command Traits 2) Artefacts

Mount Traits work just fine, even on named characters.

This is mostly true, Command traits and and artifacts do not effect the attacks of the heroes mount. They CAN however effect other mounts. It does not come up often. But it is something to keep in mind.

Would you mind providing an illustrative example?

The Lord of War command trait for GA: Chaos lets you pick a friendly unit and give it +1 to its attack rolls on a 4+. If you use this on the character himself, his mount will not benefit. If you use it on a unit of Chaos Knights, Tzaangor Enlightened, or Skullcrushers (as examples), their mounts would benefit.

Great, thanks.

In this case it is actually the question if GW realized this. I mean, the rule is mostly unchanged (except for the 4+ requirement) since the first Generals Handbook (2016). And the first Generals Handbook hadn't the rule yet, that the generals mount doesn't profit.

The rules are in the BRB now. Page 242 says: "Command Traits have no effect on attacks made by a general's mount" and Artifacts of Power have no effect on attacks made by a hero's mount". Those are very specific, so they effect non-hero/general mounts. If you want more recent abilities than that Chaos one, Lord of Nagasizzar from Legions of Nagash will give an extra attack to both a Black Knight and his skeletal steed, but not to a Wight King general steed (a non-general Wight King would get and extra attack on his steed though). The Banner of Rage artifact from Blades of Khorne will allow you to re-roll hit rolls of 1 for Skullcrusher and Bloodcrusher mounts, but not the mounts of any heroes.
