  1. I agree, and it's making GW models less interesting for me because I don't play Warhammer. Things like Snotlings do still work, (because they are at a proper goblin level now), as well as things like Ogres that I don't mind getting bigger. I don't have my metal dwarves at home, but I'll make a picture of two models GW calls Longbeards. You can't put them in the same unit because GW is bad at keeping a scale, so if you want extra models; the old ones are no longer in production, and the new ones don't fit. I'll also add in an Atlantis female dwarf. She'd fit better than their own product.
  2. You could build a giant mechanical dwarf piloted by a few Kharadron (perhaps based on a Mechanicus walker), but I'm not sure I like the feel of a big giant helping dwarves. Giantslayers seem more fitting than giants.
  3. I haven't played it, and it came out at the awful timing of April this year, but I have yet to read a negative review of Oathmark, for people that like games bigger than skirmish.
  4. Tabletop wargaming is not an expensive hobby, but tabletop wargaming with models and rulesets from other vendors is massively cheaper. Whether you can afford it is only tangentially related to whether it's worth it.
  5. Currently running a D&D game about giants, and I took the hill giants out, not my aesthetic, no interesting story options. As such, similarely safe. Still happy for King Brodd though.
  6. Because GW has increased their scale so badly that they are no longer compatible with a unit of the same name from a previous release, the producer of the game forces the choice between tossing the old models or going for another vendor that didn't mess that up so badly. I kept my Freeguild stuff around because I though people might like to play it, but it just looks bad in comparison because the proportions don't fit with other vendors (and the sculpts don't hold up). Except for some 20 guard that will become fancy orcs with a headswap, I see no reason to keep my infantry and most of my cavalry around.
  7. If you have friends that are interested in tangential stuff, like RPG's and boardgames, it could be quite doable to just get a rulebook and see whether you like it. Play with paper for a few games, and then buy models that you like, or expand an existing collection and just go. I could decide some monster faction and populate half of it with Papo dinosaurs (accurate dinosaurs with good detailing), and half of it with monsters from GW. Someone else could choose dwarves, and outfit their Arkanauts with a few shields while keeping the rifles. Yet another someone could go for humans, and go full historical. There even is a a Lego wargame somewhere. I have quite a few non-GW tabletop shops close, and they do play a lot of other stuff, but 2020 being 2020, I currently only play at a friend's house.
  8. Yeah, could be the new season. The new season that also has some glorious human sculpts in them Here. Somehow, I want to make a CoS Warcry team from those guys. Correct about Necromunda. Just was a bit excited for them.
  9. Yeah, it's weird that we're a good way into october, and they are not even in presale yet. Also, the Orlock doggies and jetpack people.
  10. Yes, I would say you'd have to use 28mm miniatures, but 28mm human scaled and whatever scale the Kairic acolytes or Excelsior Warpriests are at differ greatly, so I wouldn't use them in the same army. Similarely, metal Longbeards (17mm eye level) and modern dwarves (24mm eye level) are a vastly different scale. That's on GW, not the player using them.
  11. I get what you mean, but like Necromunda, the styling of the Warcry models is much of the draw of the game. I do agree that the warscrolls in AoS of Underworlds and Warcry models should be more usable.
  12. Considering FW's AoS support, I think that any Chaos Dwarf support would have to be from inclusion in the AoS range. I think that a faction with evil Thomas the Tank engine is a good fit for the design languages of AoS.
  13. There are Chaos dwarves in Warcry. Small hope, but the Squats have also returned (though as of yet, just in Necromunda).
  14. So you supported the designer that didn't overcharge you. Good on you! There's nothing wrong with making a design that's scaled to work with GW's products. There's nothing wrong with using a full army of internally consistent designs that are a different scaling from the official models as an AoS army as long as base sizes and height match (they even featured one using LotR stuff and I think Kairic have also been used in Cities). There's nothing wrong with kitbashing your heroes from infantry because you think hero pricing is a ripoff. There's nothing wrong with using GW models with a ruleset from a different company (that's how GW started anyway). There's nothing wrong with just using the free AoS rules instead of buying battletomes. There's nothing wrong with borrowing a book every once in a while if you want to play. I just don't like mindlessly copying an entire design or books. That's how invasive DRM is justified.
  15. Oh yeah, that would be fine. It would even enhance the feeling of puny humans standing firm in a setting that's larger than life. As an aside, Oathmark also has dwarves and elves on the same scale, and using LOTR dwarves and elves would also work (though they are slightly smaller). If you do use things like the Hurricanum and Karl, simply replace wizards with Frostgrave Wizards (1 for male, 2 for female) and put a regular standing commander for Karl. You may need to make some swords/halberd heads (though Perry's War of the Roses already has lots) and shields though. For detailing/design of the Frostgrave wizards, here's what's on that sprue (which you get two of for 13€), pleasy pay attention to the different races and ages in the head selection:
  16. If you have friends playing it, house book and models are all you want. Core rulebook is mostly useless and available. You could also possibly just use a bits site for a few bodies and get arms and heads from a friend, or swap sprues if the gang has an extention kit. If you don't like the pricing/rules/book structure, borrow books or play another game, piracy isn't the moral choice. Similar with recasting/printing exact copies vs using different models/sculpting them yourself.
  17. I don't know what miniature companies you have tried (and what factions you enjoy), but if you compare what GW makes for Cities, their competitors have them well beat. Guards and handgunners are truly awful compared to what Warlord makes (in the Pike and Shotte plastics that I have), and Greatswords are just on par. Mind you, the Guards and Handgunners sets are about 2.5 times the price of Warlord sets, and the Greatswords about four times the price of the Warlords sets. Moldlines/flash also hasn't been an issue with them (as with other recent Renedra castings). Northstar/Frostgrave do have a bit less detail in the regular soldiers set (than Greatswords), but Wizards are again, on par with GW in detail and better in design (especially for female bodies and faces). If you pick up boardgames for which miniatures are more of a byproduct, don't compare them with (admittedly) one of the best miniature makers on the market. This isn't to say that GW doesn't have its strong bits. Necromunda sets have such a slew of bits, and so much character that I don't know of any other company that could make it for that price, the Gutbusters blood bowl team got me four ogres and 10 goblins at quite a low price for their quality, and the Kharadron and Mechanicus designs are really nice. As for usability, the growing GW designs make them hardly usable in games like D&D except if you use human bodies for Orcs and Goliaths. Neither (as shown above) are AoS humans to scale with other AoS humans. I think that growth is done as much to provide more room for detail, as it is to make them less compatible with other vendors, because quality of them is creeping up
  18. The Missile troops https://store.warlordgames.com/collections/landsknecht/products/landsknecht-missile-troops are all plastic, as are the Pikemen https://store.warlordgames.com/collections/landsknecht/products/landsknechts-pikemen, but other troops are metal. They are 22 euro per 30 models and because they are human shaped, they are compatible with other historical models (like the perry sets, which are even cheaper per model) as well as the Frostgrave Soldiers 2 and Wizards 2 sets if you want some diversity, as well as Oathmark for goblins, dwarves and elves. I'd say a Freeguild army of 80 guard, 30 Greatswords (foot knights), 60 handgunners, 20 Pistoleers 2 generals (also Foot Knights) and a few wizards (Frostgrave) would cost about (in pounds) 60+40+20+40+12=172 pounds (with 10 guards, 6 foot knights and 6 wizards to spare). Compared to some 140+82.50+105+80+80+20+25=532.5 if you purchase it from GW. If you add in a few things like Griffins, Hurricanums etc, it evens out more. And in this list, I do think the historical/frostgrave team has the better sculpts.
  19. The archer is a better sculpt than the Handgunners or the Guard. Added: Archer, Greatsword, Landsknecht, Guard. Edit added 2nd picture: These should all be humans on the same scale.
  20. @Kirby Left to right: '90's Bretonnian Archer, Kairic Acolyte, Frostgrave Cultist, Warlord Landsknecht, Greatsword. Tried to get them to the same height. I'll have to pick a new one and put a guard body next to a Warlord body, the latter are much more human shaped.
  21. The Landsknecht set is a historical one, so it's quite a bit slimmer and better proportioned than the old Empire kits. It's not the height that's wrong, it's the proportions. I'll make a picture tonight.
  22. Freeguild Greatswords are already quite big for humans, and Lumineth are even bigger? GW has really let themselves go... Karl Franz on Deathclaw is a really nice set, it has three head options for the griffin (and the fit is such that you can switch them out) and three chestplates that can really improve a bit of scenery if they are not on the model, the model is impressive and detailed, and there's a mage and another General in the box. These guys are also even bigger than the regular GW humans, so might fit your Lumineth I don't think GW makes stuff cheaper, ever.
  23. Soulbound already has a discontinued model on the cover, I don't think they are kept in the loop of product decisions. And yes, I do think most of the models of Cities will be removed. Wild Riders could go to Kurnothi/Sylvaneth (they already have the required fragility). Gyros would fit Kharadron, Ironbreakers/Irondrakes do fit Fyreslayers a bit, maybe Drakespawn could fit Malarion, but I think most will be removed. Back to the glorious Skydwarves! I need to get me a boat, but am still torn. On one hand, I like the design of the Frigate better, on the other hand, the Ironclad is a lot more impressive. Which ship do people prefer building and painting?
  24. I would like to note that ebay, craigslist or similar can get you an army cheaply. I have about 6000 points of Cities, and spent about 400 on that, and that's including a gaming table. I'll be selling off a lot of it, I don't need 120 guard and 80 handgunners, and have some 12 wizards and 6 generals, but some stuff I really like and would like to keep (Karl, Hurricanum, a few demis, Greatswords a few Pistoleers/Outriders, some knights, some artillery, Gyrocopters).
  25. I also hope it doesn't happen, but lore is just a flick of the pen away from being rewritten, and GW could do that and say "See? We don't just do static lore!". Cities is brilliant. It has men, dwarves and elves working together* to survive, and that feels really fleshed out. The fact that it has 0 new sculpts, and half its roster really in need of a resculpt is troubling. It does have Warcry rules, which is a good thing, but why in a White Dwarf instead of cards like other factions? They seem to go out of their way to keep their commitment low. If/when Cities goes away, I hope the Gyrocopters/bombers find a home in the sky. I like the sculpt, and it fits its descendants (the Kharadron) perfectly. * Except for giving each other any bonus, of course.
