  1. Ugh, why are Jezzails so expensive. 420 for 9. Warpseer, Seer on Bell, 100 Clanrats, 40 Monks, 9 Jezzails.. like 280 left. What are other people doing for reliable shooting?
  2. I didn't really play against any magic heavy armies. In fact, I've never played against one. Incantations, sure. I've only been playing this year, though. I found the Warpfire Thrower to be pretty lackluster against everything but Orruks tbh. I don't think Skitterleaping for WLV is a valid use of a Seer, you're basically trading him for one attempted cast unless you can get a really good defensive position to cast from. Is WLV worth 220pts? Nope. I'd prefer to toss regular spells through a Spell Portal. But yeah, I'll be cutting some stuff and trying Jezzails. They're so damn expensive, though. I feel like all Skaven shooting is either very expensive, unreliable and kills itself or both. I do want to run Globadiers, but I can't find any awesome looking cost-effective conversions I really like.
  3. I had the same issue in the team tournament I played and the practice games. My list contained two Verminlords and a Seer on Bell. Plus like 4 Endless Spells. I noticed, leading up to the event, that I often had trouble getting spells off on 7+ and 8+ so I took some cheaper Endless Spells. Worked out better. Turns out tossing Dreaded Plague through Spell Mirrors is actually awesome. Some turns I'd magically dominate the board, some turns I'd never get spells off. I typically owned the enemy magic phase, though. I lost a game vs. Orruks needing a 7+ to stop a teleport into my backfield last turn, to break the scoring in his favour. My next big tournament is in January. I'm going to be refitting my army to have more shooting and less magic. ... Presently: Warpseer with Master of Magic. Corruptor with Sword of Jugement. Bell with Death Frenzy. 2x 40 Clanrats, 1x 20 Clanrats, 1x 40 Monks, 2x Warpfire Throwers. And a mix of Spell Portals, Vermintide, Vortex, Pendulum, Geminids and Chains as I see fit. ... I'm probably going to add like 9 Jezzails or something. I'm not really sure what. I own 6 Jezails I converted from Plastics and 6 old metal ones I need to strip. I have 3 Stormfiends, but I don't really want to buy 6 more.. they're a little "too many eggs" for me. I may even go down the Deranged Inventor path.
  4. How are people finding Stormfiend spam, anyway? Any meta trends you see making them worse?
  5. I dabbled in 40k with a friend when I was like.. 12-13? Around 1990? I think it was second ed. We played with his stuff. I remember shooting cyclone missile launchers at stuff and being disappointed like nothing died. I purchased a couple blisters here and there, but frankly, I grew up kind of poor so playing this really wasn't an option. When we got to high school, my group of friends were playing AD+D. We played a lot of that. I also picked up Blood Bowl, Space Crusade and Hero Quest at various points. I actually wish I still had my copy of Hero Quest, I have zero idea where it went. After high school, I got into M:TG and played that until I was about 19. Quit in 2000. From there I got into 40k/whfb and played stuff here and there for a bunch of time.. Around 2015 I dabbled in M:TG again and decided it was WAAAY too expensive now that Mythics existed. Then came 6 years of competitive Warmachine and I sold out of GW stuff entirely. I picked up Malifaux for a bit and dropped it in that time. 2-3 years ago, I picked up Infinity and it's still my main game. When 40k 8th dropped, I tried it and sold out deciding it was terrible. When Soul Wars dropped, I got the Nighthaunts, but was like... eh. AoS didn't take hold. And then finally, the new Skaven book came out. Skaven were my thing back in the day. ... So now I bounce back and forth between Infinity and AoS, because I enjoy both for different reasons. And I turn 40 this month. I've been gaming for almost 2/3 of my life.
  6. So I hear Skaven is good against the meta boogeyman, Slaanesh? Personally I'm newish and not had the pleasure. Can you tell me why? Apparently you need shooting and single wound dudes. How does one build/play against competitive Slaanesh? Multi-Keeper, Thermal Rider, etc.
  7. Honestly, painting 120 Clanrats isn't too bad if you approach it with a method with minimal steps. Contrasts are amazing for horde armies. You can seriously cut a schedule down to like 14 steps per model or less. Assuming you start with sand on the base, model sprayed Wraithbone. Darkoath skin, Flesh Tearers cloth, Leadbelcher metal, Wyldwood fur and wood, Skeleton Bone teeth and claws, Khorne Red eyes, wash the sand and metal with Agrax, drybrush the base Terminatus Stone and trim the base in Steel Legion Drab. Not including any cleanup or reapplication, that's.. 9 steps minimum. You could get that down to like 10-15mins per Clanrat batching like 20 at a time.
  8. Blood Red is very orange. Flesh Tearers is kind of just dark red. You get a lot of Wraithbone coming through. Paint the first on the cloth sections. Once dry paint the other over the top. "One thick coat" is misleading. It's more "one medium coat and manage the pooling"
  9. Now that I'm home, I'll paste my actual method from my notepad document. Basically I skipped any "optional" bits on Clanrats but did them for big stuff. I started off using a different metal wash tone and just went with Agrax to skip a step. You can cut it down to about 14-15 steps per model. ... Skaven Contrast Scheme Spray with WRAITHBONE Paint steel with LEADBELCHER Paint cloth with BLOOD ANGEL RED Paint cloth with FLESH TEARERS RED Paint wood with WYLDWOOD Paint flesh with DARKOATH FLESH Paint fur detail with WYLDWOOD Paint eyes with KHORNE RED Paint teeth, horns and claws with WRAITHBONE Paint teeth, horns and claws with SKELETON BONE (optional) Extreme highlight teeth, horns and claws with WHITE SCAR (optional) Extreme highlight fingers/snout with KISLEV FLESH Paint rocks with TALLARN SAND Wash base and steel with AGRAX EARTHSHADE and (optional) LAHMIAN MEDIUM 1:1 Extreme highlight steel with STORMHOST SILVER (optional) Drybrush rocks with USHABTI BONE Extreme highlight rocks with WHITE SCAR Drybrush sand with TERMINATUS STONE Clean up base trim with STEEL LEGION DRAB ... Small rats: Paint whole rat with DARKOATH FLESH Paint fur sections with WYLDWOOD (optional) Higlight brown with MOURNFANG (Optional) Highlight flesh with KISLEV FLESH Bronze: Paint brass with BALTHAZAR GOLD Wash brass with AGRAX EARTHSHADE Warpstone: Paint with LAMENTER'S YELLOW Paint with WARPLIGHTNING GREEN Highlight with MOOT GREEN (Optional) Extreme highlight with 1:1 MOOT GREEN and WHITE SCAR Plague Monks As above, substite both red cloth tones with MILITARUM GREEN Paint boils with AVERLAND SUNSET Wash boils with AGRAX EARTHSHADE Rehighlight with AVERALND SUNSET (or yellow of your choice)
  10. I can give you an easy Contrast method, which is what I did. Prep model, sand and seal base then spray with Wraithbone. Paint all wood with Wyldwood. Paint cloth with Blood Angel Red (I then used Flesh Tearers to make the orange red crimson) Paint metal with Leadbelcher. At this point, go back and cleanup the skin sections with Wraithbone, because you'll see other colours under the next one. Paint skin with Darkoath. Dot the eyes with Khorne Red. Cleanup teeth then apply Skeleton Bone. Highlight fingers and muzzle with (light skin tone I can't remember). Extreme highlight cloth with Mephiston red. Highlight any bone with White. Paint the cheeks, arms, legs, exposed bodies and backs of the hands with Wyldwood. With Darkoath underneath it looks like fur. Wash the base and metals with Devlan mud. Drybrush the base with Terminatus Stone and trim it with Steel Legion Drab. ... There's an extra step for Verminlord horns, but that's what I did. I can't believe I laid in bed and typed that off the top of my head. Also a quick highlight of Mournfang over the fur. Doing contrasts over a large surface area is hard to get even.
  11. With a little more experience, I think this is what I'll run. Grey Seer on Screaming Bell (220) - Lore of Ruin: Death Frenzy Verminlord Corruptor (280) - Artefact: Sword of Judgement Verminlord Warpseer (300) - General: Master of Magic 40 x Clanrats (200) - Rusty Spear 40 x Clanrats (200) - Rusty Spear 20 x Clanrats (120) - Rusty Blade 40 x Plague Monks (280) - Woe-stave - Icon, Banner, Gong, Chimes 1 x Warpfire Thrower (70) 1 x Warpfire Thrower (70) Aethervoid Pendulum (50) Soulsnare Shackles (40) Vermintide (40) Geminids of Uhl-Gysh (60) Umbral Spellportal (70) Total: 2000 / 2000 Extra Command Points: 0 Wounds: 183 ... Drop the Vortex, take Pendulum and Shackles. Upgrade the Ratling Gun to a Warpfire Thrower. Change to Ulgu now that I can. I took Chamon in the team thing because Ulgu was taken. Runeblade was ok, but it doesn't explode like the Sword. Kind of wish I had more shooting, though.
  12. You can't cast an Endless Spell though, but you can move them in. You won't trigger damage on the other side, but it's good for position denial. I was blocking out with Vermintide that way. And that's the exact reason I'm iffy about Swords. Pendulum however, keeps going straight. It's fine. ... My only minor loss was due to a single roll. I was going to win on points.. and he cast Hand of Gork on an 8, bouncing the caster to an objective in my backfield I wasn't contesting (like an idiot). Warpseer (MoM) needed to roll an 8 to win the game. He didn't. I also assumed my Clanrats would die faster and kept the Monks bottlenecked in. They should have just ran around. Second picture, top left.
  13. The AoS team tournament was awesome. 8 teams of 5. My team was woefully unprepared. It was really fun, people kept stopping to take photos of my army on the table. Battlelines of rats, screening for a Grey Seer on Screaming Bell flanked by two Verminlords. It looked like an actual fantasy army from before the end of the Old World. I ended up getting two wins, losing on a single dice roll and getting a bye. So 3-1 which isn't bad for my first tournament. I kept hearing that people playing me got thrown under the bus in the pairing process. lol. My Skaven vs two Loonclan and Ironjaws. Round 1 vs Tomb Kings. Focal Point in Hysh - Major win. Round 2 vs Gloomspite Gits. Battle for the Pass in Chamon - Minor win. Round 3 vs. Ironjaws. Total Conquest in Shyish - Minor loss. Round 4 vs bye. Scorched Earth in Aqushy - I got the bye as one of the guys in the opponent's team had to drive home. ... Seer on Bell, Warpseer, Corruptor. 2x 40 Clanrats. 1x 20 Clanrats. Warpfire Thrower, Ratling Gun, 40 Plague Monks. Vortex, Geminids, Vermintide, Spell Portals. The spell portals were so good. I consistantly was able to shut down enemy big things with Dreaded Warpgale anywhere on the board or toss Dreaded Plague at units in deploy zone. Also was sweet using it to place Vermintide anywhere. Also, Vermintide is a phenomal spell. It is so good. One weakness I found in my list.. I just had turns where I couldn't get spells off. Mirrors 5, Vermintide 6, Geminids 7, Plague 8, Warpgale 8, Frenzy 8, Vortex 8. I need cheaper Endless Spells. I think I'm going to fit in the Pendulum and Swords. Maybe try to get in Palasade against shooting.
  14. Mostly speedpainting with contrasts and drybrushing. My first ever attempt at freehanding banners and they look terrible. The crud on the banners is Typhus Corrosion. Same with the blades on them and the Corruptor.
  15. Man, the last 2 months has been an ordeal. I have spent all my spare time painting for the team tournament this monday. It'll be my first AoS event (but nowhere near first tournament) and I'm going in with only 3-4 games experience. My captain is playing Spiderfang, we've also got a Beastclaw Raiders, Beasts of Chaos, Deepkin and myself. I'm taking this: Allegiance: Skaventide Mortal Realm: Chamon Grey Seer on Screaming Bell (220) - Lore of Ruin: Death Frenzy Verminlord Corruptor (280) - Artefact: Rune Blade (I couldn't take the Sword of Judgement as realms were unique) Verminlord Warpseer (300) - General: Master of Magic 40 x Clanrats (200) - Rusty Spear 40 x Clanrats (200) - Rusty Blade 20 x Clanrats (120) - Rusty Blade 40 x Plague Monks (280) - Woe-stave and Foetid Blade - 1x Icon of Pestilence, Contagion Banner, Doom Gongs, Bale Chimes 1 x Warpfire Thrower (70) 1 x Ratling Gun (60) Warp Lightning Vortex (100) Vermintide (40) Umbral Spellportal (70) Geminids of Uhl-Gysh (60) Total: 2000 / 2000 Extra Command Points: 0 Allies: 0 / 400 Wounds: 183 Here's everything I've painted in preperation for this event, regardless of me using it or not. Warbringer is for the Bell to summon. It now feels weird that I don't have a current painting project. I finished the last model this morning. edit: The unit of Clanrats on the bottom left are a different scheme, pre-contrast. I'll replace them when I'm not on a clock. They technically weren't painted for this event.
  16. You have three double casters. One has Master of Magic. (Warpseer, Corruptor, Bell) Is Vortex worth 100pts? At the moment I'm taking.. Geminids, Mirror, Swords and Pendulum. I want to take Vortex, Vermintide, Mirror, Geminids, Pendulum.. no points. Vortex. Win lose or Draw?
  17. I looooved seeing how many Stormfiends were doing well in London. I've been desperately wanting them to be good. I have a gaming store voucher.. might be time to get some more. =D
  18. The Mortarch sure does have a giant bone codpiece.
  19. Yes, Skaven are excellent casters. Almost all of our wizards can cast/dispel twice, we have terrain that buffs casting and a general trait that does same. Starting? Minimum 2*40 Clanrats. Maybe some Plague Monks. Grey Seer, Warpseer, Grey Seer on Bell. You could grab the Skaven half of Carrion Empire or old copies of Island of Blood. It really depends on what direction you want to go in.. Skaven is very diverse. Pestilens bleed mortal wounds and have high volume of attacks. Skryre has a lot of shooting that can kill yourself. Masterclan are great casters. Verminus provide the infantry. Moulder breeds monsters in all shapes and sizes and Eshin skulks around. Sadly you don't really see much Eshin on the table, though.
  20. So Nova was this weekend. Top 3/4 was Slaanesh, by the look of it. How did Skaven go? James O'Brien - 11th Clawlord - Brutal Fury Grey Seer: Skitterleap Grey Seer on Bell: Master of Magic, Death Frenzy, Aetherquarts Brooch Grey Seer on Bell: Warpgale Engineer: MMWP 40 Clanrats: Sword 40 Clanrats: Sword 40 Stormvermin 15 Acolytes Aethervoid Pendulum Geminids Extra command point ... Matt Obringer - 13th (!) Grey Seer on Bell: Supreme Manipulator, Aetherquarts Brooch, Skitterleap Arch Warlock: Warplightning Shield Clawlord on Brood Horror: Shield of Distraction, Verminous Valor Thanqol on Boneripper: Death Frenzy 40 Clanrats: Sword 40 Clanrats: Sword 30 Stormvermin Clawhorde Warplightning Vortex ... John Fuerhelm - 16th Grey Seer on Bell: Master of Magic, Death Frenzy Warbringer Warpseer Priest on Furnace 40 Clanrats: Spear 40 Clanrats: Spear 20 Clanrats: Spear 40 Monks: Blade 40 Monks: Blade ... Nate Trentanelli - 25th Arch Warlock: Deranged Inventor, Vigordust Injector, MMWP Bombadier: MMWP Thanqol: Warpgale 5 Acolytes 5 Acolytes 3 Stormfiends 6 Jezzails 10 Blood Knights (Allied- I didn't think we could ally.) Warplightning Cannon Warplightning Vortex ... Interesting seeing Stormvermin making placings!
  21. Hey so, Let's say you were thinking about buying into Slaanesh. What would be a) your starting list and b) your starting purchases? And of course c) what extra junk would you need for summoning?
  22. I actually don't mind going second; better chance at the first double turn.
  23. I get the feeling people don't like weapon teams? Also I keep hearing Doomwheels are underrated. Agree/disagree? ... I'm currently painting 40 Plague Monks. I actually really like the kit. There's lots of small details and eyes I don't have to paint. Militarum Green, Darkoath Flesh and Wyldwood are like 90% of the model. Kind of annoys me that Warhammer TV came out with a Skaven painting scheme that uses Darkoath skin and Wyldwood for fur a month or so after I did, now my scheme is standard. Booooo.
  24. But anyway. How do you decide how you're splitting your crew? Seems like Blissful One wants to be in the Dagger, like one guy in the Hammer (as it comes on last typically) and the rest in the Shield. What is your thought process on this?
