Unit Allotment as a Solution?

Recommended Posts

Simple question: Would you support a unit allotment of any sort?

I feel like it would limit something like spamming Skyfires or Kurnoth Hunters without increasing points for casual players.

On the other hand, that guy who bought six boxes gets his money wasted, and that's not something I'd wish on anybody, even "That Guy".

In the previous edition of Warmahordes, there was a limit on the number of some of the units you could bring in a game.  Super tough units and hard hitters were usually limit 1, while basic troops were limit 3 or 4, with medium-strength guys at limit 2.  The only unlimited models you could take were the Warjacks and Warbeasts.  There were ways around this in the form of Theme Lists, in that you could take certain units from a list in different cumulative tiers to gain bonuses to your army, like an extra 2 or 4 inches deployment for your basic troops, removing or increasing the limits on units, extra free move for slow units, adding in some terrain features right before first turn, or even points discounts on some of the units in the army.  Think Battalions, but with a tiered structure with each effect working as they were unlocked.

Using Greenskins in Age of Sigmar as an example, it worked something like this:

Tier 1 - include 3 units of Orrucks, and the army gets plus 2 inches of move on first turn

Tier 2 - include 2 or more Boar Chariots units, and they can redeploy before the first game turn, and their Unit Allowance goes up by 1

Tier 3 - include a Great Shaman, and friendly units within 3 inches of it gain +1 to Armor Save rolls

Tier 4 - Include a Warboss with Waaagh! Banner, and all Orruks units go down in points cost by 20 points per unit

The tiers work a bit better in Warmahordes since they have pages of Special Rules like 40K, and they could add in a bunch of those Special Rules for the different tiers of the theme lists, like Stealth, Advance Demployment, or Tough (Feel No Pain in 40K).

I have also heard of "Highlander" events, where each player can only bring one of each unit (with some exceptions made for Troops in 40K).  Maybe something like that would be fun?  It would really hurt some of the AoS armies though, since so many armies have so few unit choices.

This works out well for Narrative play but ultimately limits the design for several players their armies and thus meta armies.

Skyfires and other great Missle attack models are an issue to the game, not because of their costs but because how the current rules of the game do not limitate any of their functionalities. This is not the case for Melee, Summon and Spell attacks, which is why these are seen as 'normal' and Missle attacks are currently amongst one of the 'abnormalities'.

What I'd like is every unit be roughly the same in terms of cost. This is allready very much the case because we have very similar patrons going on for our spells, melee attacks and summon attacks. What we do not have is every faction being equiped with some sort of "uber" missle attack unit. Because of how the rules work around those types of attacks you see a cascade in it being "the best by absence of limitation".

One of the Butchers theme lists allowed you to spam Doom Reavers (which were usually limited).

The other minimum would be that Battleline (Or Battleline with Alliegance) units could be as many as you want.

I'd rather not go back to the days of core/special/rare. Since it appears that GW is willing to adjust points and warscrolls I doubt that any unit that crushes the meta (like skyfires do currently) will be allowed to continue to do so. Whether through a points hike or a warscroll change (reduce range, eliminate the hit buff, or the mortal wound ability altogether), or by implementing soft counters (new GA traits/artifacts that protect from shooting, mortal wounds, or hose chaos demons), they won't still be crushing the scene in a year.
