Can a War Mammoth Be a Hero?

Hello,

I played a game today and my opponent had a War Mammoth. He said there's a version that makes it a Hero, I assume with the Marauder Chieftain in Howdah, but I can't find an entry for it anywhere. On the Forge World Matched Play points it says Behemoth only, so is it just a weird non-Hero with a Hero Phase ability? Just want to make sure I know what's what.

I think your friend has his 'heroes' and 'HEROES' confused. You're right, the chieftain is one of those but-why-the-hell-would-you-not-take-it upgrades, but doesn't give the mammoth the HERO keyword.

Back in the game that was, the mammoth could be picked as a mount for your lord or warshrine, now the warscroll just says that if the chieftain character is on it marauder units nearby get a buff. But there's no hero.  The model originally came with a handler figure and a character sitting on a throne thingy which went into the howdah, so you could run it with or without.

 

The ability isn't a command ability it's just an ability that benefits nearby 'rauders.
