Hey all.

I've been collecting freepeoples and all other former empire related troops on and off for the past year or so. I'm gonna list what I have below and want to hear from some people that know more than I do what you would pull and reccomend I buy to make a killer army list.

General w/ Banner and horse

War altar of Sigmar

Bright Wizard

Grey Wizard

Jade Wizard

Light Wizard

20 spearmen

30 militiamen <- really like these guys

14 handgunners

10 greatswords

Steam tank

Field Mortar

--

I think it goes without saying that I need more handgunners.... But what else? I've been getting my ass kicked by my friends grand alliance skaven/slaves army. I know my selection isn't optimal so my armies are hosge podge.... I wanna change that...

Thanks a ton, men of the Empire!

swordsmen, crossbowmen, handgunners, general with a banner, general on a griffon

Could I just replaced the swordsmen with the militiamen that I already have or would that not be advisable? I have been impressed with their "shooting" in the games that I have played.

In general most people run Swordsmen because they're there to tank up the enemy while you shoot them with your shooters (in both your shooting phase, and your Great Companies phase).

Swordsmen tend to do this best because not only do they have shields (Which militia don't), but they also get the parry bonus while in combat.

That's not to say that other variations of the Freeguild Guard aren't useful, just that in general you don't tend to take Guard to get damage out of them, you take them as a frontline unit. Most people will run Freeguild guard as Swordsmen, although some like to have some Halberdiers as well for the rend but in that case they're probably used more offensively.

I would think Militia may be useful as a 10-man unit for holding objectives or being chaff.

Problem is, I already own 30 militamen haha.

Griffons. Lots and lots of griffons.

They seem to bring some much needed meatiness and speed.

They perform well too, so its never a waste taking a bunch of them :), especially since once can have a battlemage and such. Its quite a cheesy playstyle that way though.

That's all good, then run them and see how you feel. Was just pointing out why most people choose Swordsmen.

That being said, I've never been very impressed with the fact that Freeguild Guard hit better in large numbers (+1/+2/+3 to hit depending on 20/30/40 models) and tend to write it off (forgetting a lot of the time when my Freeguild Guard get into combat unscathed), but on Militia they get to double dip into the hit bonus as it effects both their shooting and combat.

Whatever wins.

Does this look annoying enough?

Freeguild General (100) - General - Stately War Banner

Freeguild General On Griffon (260) - Lance

Battlemage On Griffon (260)

Battlemage (100) - Specialisation : Bright

Units

30 x Freeguild Guard (240)

20 x Freeguild Guard (160)

20 x Freeguild Handgunners (200)

20 x Freeguild Crossbowmen (200)

Total: 1520 / 2000

Yeah it is unorthodox, but I haven't been disappointed. They seem to fight pretty darn well en masse. They do get chewed in melee, but most of the time they have already hurt whatever is coming at them by shooting.
