Dead_Ghost
By no means an expert on these things. Looking at pictures of oil online, it looks like it reflects a lot of light - there are greys into near white on it depending on the source of the light. Maybe you need to add some highlights to the black before applying for the 'ardcoatSent from my G3221 using Tapatalk
Killax
Tamiya Smoke is basically a black wash gloss, which looks very oily.
Screwface
Try watering down the 'ardcoat a bit if it's too shiny. Might also be worth checking out the new Nuln Oil gloss that GW does.
TwistedFrog
Paint with Eshin Grey or a darker grey then wash with 2 - 3 coats Nuln Oil "Gloss". This give a nice wet feel with out being overly glossy.
RuneBrush
I tend to do oil effects in the "classic" manner - so old GW Black Ink and Klear Floor Cleaner, however getting hold of Klear is a bit like finding rocking horse poo. Apparently "Astonish Flawless Wood Polish" is a good alternative, but I don't have first hand confirmation of that!
cb_rex
I'd say sharp ultra fine white highlights on top of black then give it all a coat of Nuln Oil Gloss.
lastdarkness
Thanks for the suggestions, Ill try them on a test model too see the effects.
Earthtremor
You could also try painting it like heated metal, you see it a lot on gun barrels in Sci-fi, like this: https://goo.gl/images/pco7zp maybe with the null oil gloss over the top? It might also be worth trying out the new gem paints, perhaps the blue one over a blended grey with white highlights and toned down with null oil? TheOtherJosh
Something to consider, if you're going to seal your model after painting to prevent damage to the paint (using something like Purity Seal) you may end up with a "matte" or at least "satin" finish over the entire model. Then do limited application of 'ArdCoat to imply some slick looking hilights.
