  1. He has great mortal wound output, is good value, and the Wardokk can heal him. @Malakree is very good at using him. I haven't tried him yet, but I am getting my value out of the Ardfist before it is changed in June (I expect a change in the GHB to points of either Ardboyz, Warchanter, Ardfist or all of them). The nice thing about the other two lists is that they have some variation in them, so are a good way of finding out what you like.

The problem with my list is that if you don't like Ardboyz having painted 75 of them... it can be a bit annoying 😄

  2. I posted this to some friends last night following Sheffield:

I played Sheffield Slaughter this weekend and threw some thoughts on twitter (@Skeekrit) but thought some of you may be interested in what I took and the games

    Army:

    Big Waaagh!

Orruk Megaboss; Brutish Cunning; Metalclaw Rippa

    Warchanter

    Warchanter

Weirdnob; Great Green Visions; Hand of Grok

    Ardboyz (20,20,20,10,5)

    Ardfist

    Command Point

    Game 1: vs Big Waaagh!

Lost - I charged 20 buffed Ardboyz into 15 buffed Ardboyz. Killed 2, he killed 8... then Goregrunta boss killed Megaboss in one turn; meaning I couldn't attack with him. Boo - bad @Malakree :)

    Game 2: vs Skaven

Won - I cleared the chaff (night runners) then 40 plague monks killed 20 Ardboyz; 10 Ardboyz killed all Plague monks, and they killed me back with Death Frenzy

Stormfiends shot off another 20 unit, but I got the 4+ to get the unit back; and took his home objective. Win; although couldn't kill Stormfiends

    Game 3: vs Nurgle

Won - Great game; we were swapping objectives, but my 20 Ardboyz came back and priority roll meant opponent couldn't react. I walked onto his other objective and got unassailable lead.

    Game 4: vs Idoneth Deepkin

Won - Just not enough bodies; so I could afford to lose lots. Gotrek killed 40 Ardboyz, and again I only got one unit back; but he couldn't catch my early lead and the armies of bodies in my army. I did fail all my hands of Gorks including 2 double 1s with +3 to cast... oh dear!

Game 5: vs Ogor Mawtribes (Stonehorns)

Lost - Stonehorn army... ouch! I took first turn, cast hand of Gork but tried to badly hurt one of the Stonehorns. I did 7 wounds; but he killed 11 Ardboyz meaning I couldn't take the objective. The Stonehorns then killed the world.

I made a big mistake though - I fought near the Mawpot, which meant it was always refilled and healed 23 wounds over the game. Hopefully I learn from this

Ardfist - great fun, but I only brought 4 units back out of 16 opportunities (4+ required) so a little disappointed with that. It's such a swingy roll.

I may swap Megaboss and one unit of 20 for a Mawkrusha at the next tournament.

I know from attending slaughter and heat 1 that there are very few people who have seriously been playing them super well. Most of the lists are fluff lists, see the Troggherds at heat 1, or people are still learning the rules. Example being @Skeekrit who I know from our game is still learning/remembering all the new stuff from the Gloomspite book, even despite that he still qualified for the Grant Tournament!

I think we could make Gitz into a 3-2 or 4-1 army with practice. @Malakree is correct - I made lots of mistakes at Sheffield (including the fluff of 2 Gargants) - and then mistakes in some of the games at GW Heat 1. I do have the advantage of having played a Grot horde army for a very long time, so I know what most things can do, but the fiddly bit went wrong a few times. I think we will need kind draws to get back to @Donal's 5-0 standard!

And I do agree that Skaven seem very good, but I can only play with one alliance due to time constraints otherwise I get very confused. And I love destruction... or Grots!

Also edit: Sorry, this is the Ironjawz chat... @Malakreeconfused me :)

    Loonboss

    12 Squig Herd

    5 Loonsmashas

    5 Loonsmashas

I would look at these 4 units as ways of getting points back. What do you want them to do (especially the Squig Herd). It looks like it's there for battleline 'tax' but is neither small enough to be sacrificial or big enough for a hammer. Loonboss - try him and see if you like his ability. If he's not the general (I assume Skagrott will be) his ability is a bit more difficult to use - especially if you charge or Hand of Gork the unit of 60.

I would also echo @Skabnozeon the fanatics... consider dropping one, or trying the Sporesplatta fanatics to get the 20 points.

It's been a little buried but both @Skeekrit and I commented on how impressed we were with the squig herds at heat 1. I think they might be the unsung heroes of the new gloomspite book

I did indeed like them a lot. I've use 1 x 24 Sheffield and 2x24 Heat 1 and I can't think of a time they underperformed from my expectations (unlike the Gargants they replaced). They are definitely along my style of play (hordes, lots of wounds, battleshock immunity near Shrine) which many people will not like (or want to paint). With the objectives in AOS2 (apart from places of power) being mostly number related having 2 wound models, with 2 attacks and small rend is great. I was initially worried about the 1" reach but with 20 models they just sit in 2 ranks of 10, and most of them can attack most of the time.

Oh - and they are twice as resilient as the Grots to things which cause wounds per model (ie warpfire throwers... or own own Moon)

It happens.  It's just a game so no harm.  That said, you should probably try out the Loonboss with the correct rules before dropping him from the list.  😜

I did use the 6s = mortals in most of the games, but it was less than stellar. Lots of enemies with -1s to hit.

Your Loonboss is not using them up on "Stab Em Good"?   I figured that between that ability and battleshock immunity you would use up most of them.  That is interesting if you are still getting a lot of extras though.

Some of this is my fault, but the Loonboss was rarely near enough the stabbas. This is part of what is making me thinking of dropping the Loonboss, Shootas, and 1 Madcap for Skragrott.... lots to consider before the next outing but really liking the book

  8. At the Heat 2 I had Cunning Plan, which guaranteed a Command Point turn 1 even when I was given 2nd turn (as happened most of the time). I either deployed both squigs within 12" of the Loonshrine, or ensured they were with 6" of one of the Wizards on a flank.

I then would pile in, and remove casualties to either keep the battleshock immunity, or deliberately lose it. Once you're near the enemy the 4+ MW from fleeing is a nice bonus if you don't have characters nearby or if the enemy has a lot of armour.

  9. So I finished 31st at the GT Heat 1 (out of 79 players), with my Gloomspite -- with 3 wins, 1 minor-loss and 1 loss. (no points for minor loss at GW-GT but really happy with the 3 wins, and amazed to qualify for the final.

The list was changed from Sheffield (as I've mentioned above), as Gargants are still rubbish...

    • Loonboss, Cunning Plan, Spitefull Prodder
    • Fungoid Shaman; Hand of Gork
    • Madcap; Itchy Nusiance
    • Madcap; Great Green Spite
    • 60 Stabbas (Spears)
    • 60 Stabbas (Spears)
    • 48 Squig Herd
    • 48 Squig Herd
    • 20 Shootas
    • Endless: Mork's Mighty Mushroom, Scuttletide, Quicksilver Swords

I found the army to be much better and consistent than the Sheffield one, although I was glad of the practice offered at Sheffield (in fact it was essential)

    Game 1 - Ironjawz - Major Win

Narrow deployment meant that I could clog up the board and the shifting objectives were kind to me. His Foot of Gork did 10 mortal wounds to the Madcap, but I killed him with Scuttletide, and then Spiteful Prodder. Volume of attacks killed one of the Maw-Krushas, and the second one couldn't hold the objectives.

    Game 2 - Seraphon - Minor Loss

Places of Power is difficult for my army with 4 Goblins Heroes. We each got to 1 point, after which the Squigs killed 2 of his heroes, leaving just the Slaan. Unfortunately the Slaan killed my heroes as well, and the Fungoid couldn't 'Hand' himself (within 3" of Razordon). The Squigs surronded 2 objectives, and Stabbas surronded the third but he won on VPs. Really close and the best I've played this mission in a while

Game 3 - Mixed Order (Dragon & Dragon Princes) - Major Win

The Dragon & Dragon princes charged on my right flank, and destroyed the Shootas, but also charged the Stabbas. They wore them down whilst the Squigs held the left flank. The Fanatics did 12 wounds on the Dragon in my turn (who then killed them, Shaman, and 40 Stabbas), but I used Quicksilver Swords to clear one of the objectives, and then 'Hand'ed one of Stabba units onto the objective.

    Game 4 - Skaven - Major Loss

He took first turn and ran his army forward. I wounded Thanquol with Quicksilver Swords (in Realm of Metal) and moved forward one unit of Stabbas. I released the fanatics who needed a 5" to charge the Stormfiends. I failed (with re-roll)... and the Stormfiends went through my army. (2x 60 Stabbas and Squigs). I failed to bring back a unit with the Shrine and couldn't defend my central objective. Lost all the priorities as well. Happy with how I set it up, but should have concentrated on damaging the Stormfiends with spells once I had killed Thanquol.

    Game 5 - Nurgle - Major Win

He pushed up 30 Plaguebearers onto the central objectives and scored an early 5 points. I ran my army up to the centre (no charges) and took the objectives back due to numbers. On my left the Squig Herd was slowly killed by Blight Kings, and he regained the objective, but on the right the BlightKings were overwhelmed with the stabbas and fanatics (-1 to hit was great). In my second turn I cast Hand on Squigs and put them within 9" of his objective (one hero guarding it), but failed the charge. However he couldn't summon enough to stop me, and despite losing priority turn 3, the squigs charged bottom of turn 3, and took his objective. I had too many bodies for him, although with -1 to hit (and sometimes -2) we didn't really kill a lot!

    So that's 2 units of 24?

I always ask myself what points value would they have to be to be good...100, 120? I'm not sure.

Yes - 2 units of Squig Herd. They seemed to be very good and able to hold up the enemy. The -1 rend was welcome as well

The gargant points value is difficult to judge. The problem is they have the potential to go completely over the top, hit with everything, roll 18 attacks and do 6 wounds for a headbut... or they can fall over on the charge no-where near a character and injure your own army. If they get a small decrease in GHB19 I'll try them again, but it's difficult to see them being used regularly without a significant cost drop to (say) 120. Problem is explaining that to the one opponent a year where they go insane and kill his 500 point model!

  11. Hi All,

A quick Sheffield round-up from the 2nd Gloomspite player there... avoiding last Gloomspite by a sports vote! As always this was a great event and will remain on my must attend list. Great work from Pete & Adie.

    List:

    • Loonboss with Giant Squig - Cunning Plan & Spiteful Prodder
    • Fungoid Shaman - Hand of Gork
    • Madcap Shaman - Itchy Nusiance
    • Madcap Shaman - Greenspite
    • 60 Stabbas (Spears)
    • 60 Stabbas (Spears)
    • 24 Squig Herd
    • 5 Loomsmashas
    • Aleguzzler Gargant
    • Aleguzzler Gargant
    • Mushroom, Scuttletide, Pallisade, Gravetide, QuicksilTer Swords

They were my first 5 games with Gloomspite and I definitely made mistakes throughout the tournament. There's just so much to learn and remember. It was a shame that there were only 3 of us, but very different armies - Spiders one, my one, Squig Hopper & Boingrot one. I like the variety of the book.

I played: Nighthaunt (Lost); Beast of Chaos (Won); Archaon Nurgle (Lost); Ironjawz (Lost); Skaven (Won)

The Gloomspite army definitely has possibilities, and I enjoyed all my games - I felt I wasn't outclassed in any of the games. Skaven was against Wayne Kemp with his lovely army... but not optimally made so difficult to take information on the Skaven book, but Thanquol is definitely beatable. Just need to attack him in combat and the wounds start to show.

The Endless spells were great fun, the Mushroom making people change their plans / movement and Scuttletide hunting for characters, and either stopping movement, or forcing opponents to move away. The Quicksilver swords were great with so much Chaos at the tournament.

I have GW Heat 1 this weekend, so planning a few changes to the list.

    OUT:

    • Aleguzzler Gargant x2
    • Loonboss with Giant Squig (because I don't have GW model painted)
    • Pallisade
    • Gravetide

    IN

    • 24 Squig Herd
    • reduction of 60-40 on one unit
    • 20 Shoota unit (to try)
    • Loonboss

I only did it in the last 2 games, but teleporting the Squig Herd with Hand of Gork and being able to re-roll the charge roll feels very powerful, and there aren't many armies who can ignore 24 models and 48 wounds in their back lines. They can also survive and operate without character involvement which is useful so far away. Unfortunately the Gargants (which I love, and keep trying to take) are just awful again, even with the 2018 points drop. Will I try them again - yes; because I a problem... - should I ; definitely no!

Hopefully I'll have more luck at GW Heat 1. Hoping to improve and go 3 wins; but if I get practice against a difficult Skaven or FEC army I'll be happy as well. Would be amazing to qualify; but a little too much to hopeful this early in Gloomspite book (despite my Moonclan and Gitmob experince pre Battletome)
