  1. Indeed, however scrolls could be different in the box than in the book. Those boxes have a year lead and the books have a 6 month lead IIRC. With that list, you’ll likely want to run 3 blobs: Olynder and Hexwraiths Guardian and Reapers Knight and Banshees Each of those heroes sync nicely with each of those units. I don’t play 1k games, but looks like it should be fun.
  2. I’m expecting discussion to really crank up with the new book. A lot of people have some Nighthaunt and/or really like the look of the army.
  3. Spirit Hosts are not there for their output - though they are a nice counter to save stacking Stormcast. They’re there to be a tarpit. They’re also the second best value unit on a point per wounds basis, making them an efficient tarpit. But yeah, lots to play around with. Myrmourns even have some synergy as they can eat an endless spell cast by Nagash and then be healed pretty easily.
  4. Yeah, that might be on to something. I do think there's a lot of gas in 9 Spirit Hosts. However, the return on a unit of 30 Chainrasps or Reapers is more reliable. In that case, you're always getting 4 models/4 wounds back with the Spirit Torment/Nagash combo. In the Spirit Host case, it really depends on how many wounds are on a Spirit Host. There's really a lot to play around with when it comes to Nagash - I just wish I had the time to do so!
  5. Got a tournament recap up as a blog post:
  6. This past weekend I attended a GT in Columbus, Ohio called Brewhammer. Results and lists are on BCP. After only 3 test games with Nagash and 1 with my specific list, I took a Nagash Nighthaunt list. My list was: Prized Sorcery / Inspired / Emerald Host / Battle Regiment Nagash Lady Olynder (General, Spirit Drain) Spirit Torment (Pendant of the Fell WInd) 5 Hexwraiths / 5 Hexwraiths / 5 Hexwraiths / 10 Chainrasp Horde 10 Dreadscythe Harridans I had other lists in mind that I had hoped to have ready/have time to test, but due to life I just ran out of time both to prepare other lists and to get enough test games in - due to this I was hoping to go 3-2 (which I did!). The general thought was to often run Nagash and Olynder side-by-side. This allowed her to put mystic shield on him - an easy cast, as she gets no bonuses to casting. I also gave her Spirit Drain for this reason. The Hexwraiths were there not just to bodyguard Olynder, but also to help with mobility and to do some mortals on the charge. The Chainrasps were a screen or a deep striking objective grabber. The Harridans and Spirit Torment ran together, creating a nice little hammer unit that was often left alone by my opponent until they were shoved into the thick of things. Game 1 I played against a Host Duplicitous list that featured 50 Pink Horrors in First Blood. My opponent was also a one-drop and took the first turn. He ran out to hold two objectives on each flank with the two units of 20. I sent Nagash and one unit of Hexwraiths into one unit and just about everything else into the other unit. I snuck the Chainrasps in behind him and threatened his small general (I forget the name). The strategy by me worked, but it was just a lot of dice rolling, I was new to Nagash so needed to look at rules, and I believe we had to call it after only 2 or 3 rounds - can’t quite remember. Had we had time to play it out, it would have been really close as Nagash had just lifted one unit of 20 and the other one was getting pretty whittled down… though he had just summoned in 10 more. Also, the game would have been a lot different had I gotten the first turn. Game 2 Played a Dracothian’s Tale Seraphon list in Power Struggle with an allied unit of Stormdrake Guard, Kroak, a bastiladon, and some salamanders. I gave my opponent the turn and set up in a castle. He smartly chose not to alpha my castle with just the two dragons and moved out to grab some objectives. I came in and took the middle objective with Nagash. He got priority and brought in the Salamanders and charged with the dragons and salamanders. It didn’t work. Nagash smacked down the Salamanders and then on my turn he smacked down the Stormdrake Guard with some support from a unit of Hexwraiths and Lady Olynder. I also got a Wave of Terror charge off on a massive unit of Skinks with my Harridans and lifted them. I doubled him into 3 and lifted most of his army. We had to talk out round 5, but ended up taking the win. Game 3 This was the game that bothered me the most. It was against a mixed arms Idoneth Deepkin army featuring 4 Sharks, 2 units of 10 Thralls, a unit of 20 Reavers, 2 units of 3 defensive eels, Volturnos, and the new hero. We played Feral Foray. I left Nagash open to an ambush charge and gave away the first turn. He sent in 10 Thralls that did some work to Nagash (I had not done Finest Hour). Nagash smacked them down in my turn and got me an extra point as I had chosen Broken Ranks with him. I was able to deepstrike some Harridans and the Torment in to raid one of his objectives and he was able to do the same to one of mine. At this point though I was out-scoring him barely. On my turn I completely forgot about High Tide and chose Slay the Warlord, hoping to do it with Nagash, and then sent everything in. He never mentioned High Tide until the combat phase happened, and I was just sort of like, “Oh.” I still killed his warlord, but had really taken a beating and opened myself up to some hurt. We then had to talk out the rest of the game, and I ended up conceding. Game 4 This was against a Soulblight that featured Belladama, Mannfred, Radukar, a unit of 40 Zombies, a unit of 20 Zombies, 30 Skeletons, and 20 Grave Guard. The battleplan was Tectonic Interference. I gave away the first turn, and the alpha objective was in the middle. He grabbed it with his unit of 40 zombies screening his unit of 30 Skeletons. I got ambitious and called Broken Ranks on the Zombies. I cast Soul Cage on them with Nagash and sent Nagash, the Harridans, and one unit of Hexwraiths (Olynder and a second unit failed with longbomb charges) into the thick of things. I fought with the Hexwraiths and Harridans first (the Harridans were also tagged by a summoned unit of wolves) and then Nagash cleared out the zombies to give me a bonus point. I then got the double turned and lifted his Skeletons and most of his Grave Guard (I had cast Soul Cage on them). On his turn I finished off his Grave Guard and even though the shifting objective kept the score close, I was in control from that point onwards. It was a great game to illustrate just how much damage Nagash can do. Game 5 This was by far my closest game. It was against Nurgle playing Survival of the Fittest. It was also the only game in which Nagash was killed. My opponent had 3 units of Blightkings that he made his predators (thinking it would cause me a distraction), Glottkin, Orghotts, a unit of Nurglings, and another small hero that was his general. I gave away the first turn, but he maintained a castle on a flank objective. I sent Lady Olynder and some Hexwraiths toward his castle and grabbed the other two objectives. He chose Slay the Warlord on turn 2 and charged Olynder who was flanked by two units of Hexwraiths with two units of Blightkings and Orghotts. I was surprised by this move, and he was equally surprised as he not only failed to kill Olynder, but also failed to kill either unit of Hexwraiths on the charge. On my turn I retreated out of combat (a mistake I discovered) and chose Broken Ranks on a unit of Blightkings. Nagash only got two Arcane Bolts loaded and then whiffed on his rolls, causing me to not come close to lifting the Blightkings. After all of his output, I was a bit shocked. Clearly, I should have left something in combat with the Blightkings to do more damage. So we both dropped our battle tactics. I got the double turn and chose Slay the Warlord (I had done a lot of chip damage to him with Olynder… regretted that after not dropping the Blightkings). I dropped the leader with Nagash in the hero phase, however then Nagash got double charged in my movement phase by The Glottkin and Orghotts. I didn’t really have a way to screen that out, but in hindsight should have at least charged Orghotts with something. I dropped the Blightkings with Nagash (gaining an extra point for doing it with a predator) and lifted Orghotts with Olynder who had been tagged in (Nagash had put him down to a single wound), but thanks to the damage from Orghotts, the Glottkin took Nagash down. However, I had managed to score 8 points that round, which ended up being an amount my opponent wasn’t able to come back from when we talked it out. Summary Nagash changes things. He was able to do so much and completely changed the way I played. I’m worried that he will lose a lot of value with the new book as the spells are sure to change and I’d be concerned about his ability to be a reliable massive hammer without Reaping Scythe. That was always my first cast with him, and Arcane Bolt was essential to his output. However, Soul Cage ended up being the spell that really changed things for me at times. I never once attempted Hand of Dust. I’d like the Spellportal just to make that a threat, but more so to have a longer range on Soul Cage and Shademist. I’ve got mixed feelings about Olynder. Her chip mortal wounds weren’t reliable enough, though they did help when they worked. Grief Stricken is great, but remains tough to cast and is often an unbind target. I liked using Mystic Shield with her to put on Nagash, but often she ended up not close enough as you have to play objectives. Her melee output is okay at best without Reaping Scythe. Being two casts and a distraction from Nagash is nice, but I just don’t know if it’s enough. The Hexwraiths were largely disappointing. Just not enough output and not durable enough to be an anvil. Their speed was often their best feature, which isn’t to be overlooked as Nagash needs assistance for board control. The Chainrasps were used to deepstrike onto objectives and be a screen. They worked as expected. The Spirit Torment/Harridans combo was really good and gave me a second hammer that could really catch my opponents by surprise. I was originally sour on the list, but think I would run it again. I do think an anvil of something like 9 Spirit Hosts, 30 Reapers, or 30 Chainrasps would be great with Nagash. He (Nagash) largely did fine healing, but adding either Emerald Lifeswarm or Mortalis Terminexus would make it so he could really take a hit and heal back up. I also do think finding a way to get Spellportal would be nice.
  7. I’ve posted my list elsewhere but it was: Nagash / Olynder (general, Spirit Drain)/ Torment (PotFW) 3 x 5 Hexwraiths / 10 Chainrasp / 10 Harridans I’ll try to get a longer post or even a blog post about it up later this week.
  8. So I ended up going 3-2 and finishing 13/40 with my Nighthaunt list. Won a close game against Soulblight that I really had control of the whole game… but it was close. Then eked out a lucky win against Nurgle. This was the only game where Nagash was killed. A combined charge from a Glottkin and Orghotts after some chip damage from shooting and contagion points did him in. Also, he failed to lift a minimum sized unit of Blightkings after I had chosen broken ranks for them due to a whiffs and a miscast on the third spell. Overall, it was great to go 3-2 and feel like I was in every game. Think I’ll ditch Olynder and the 3 x 5 Hexes if I get to play more before the new book (a 15-month-old at home limits my playtime). She did a bit here and there, but wasn’t a hammer or an anvil really. It’s an okay combo, but I just feel like there might be better options. The Harridans were easily my second best unit.
  9. I’m attending a GT this weekend in Columbus called Brewhammer. Currently am 1-2. My list is Nagash / Olynder / Torment / 3 x 5 Hexes / Chainrasp Horde / Harridans Not optimized, but it’s what I got together. Played 50 pink horrors, a dracothian’s tale Seraphon list, and mixed arms Idoneth. Beat the Seraphon. Overall, Nagash is insane. He’s lifted a unit of 20 pinks, 2 Stormdrake Guard and a reinforced salamander pack that alpha’d him, 5 Saurus Guard, 10 skinks, 10 thralls that alpha’d him, a tide caster, and 2 sharks. He’s also been a battle tactic beast and an absolute anvil even when I mess up his screens. However, I really don’t think the Olynder match works as well as I thought it would. With so many points into Nagash, you really need efficiency in the rest of your army and Olynder isn’t that and just doesn’t do enough reliably. After this tournament, I think I will look into other combos. I will say the first matchup is a tough one, but had I gone first it would’ve helped immensely. I also should’ve won against Idoneth and came close to doing so, but made a couple critical mistakes (like forgetting about high tide which my opponent failed to mention to me as well until the combat phase, sigh) that cost me the game.
  10. If you click on Core Rules and go to Battletome: Nighthaunt you should see it just got updated on January 26th. It was weird that they didn't notify about it at all otherwise though.
  11. Look at the Knight of Regret rule. They changed it from “general” to “Nighthaunt General”.
  12. Just saw there’s Nighthaunt FAQ for in the app. They never advertised this, but it clears up how Nagash works. No bodyguard for him, but he does grant Deathless and Spectral Summons.
  13. Definitely not the same one though. Also, if there is a ghost boat, I don’t think it would be a monster keyword. I’d guess it would be more like the Black Coach or the KO boats - behemoth, but not a monster.
  14. In the one game I saw pics of, he literally encircled his Torment with Hexwraiths. So I guess he very much wanted to keep the Torment alive. In a chat I’m in, someone in his play group said he came up with the list pretty last minute and liked the Torment a lot because it heals in both opponents’ turns. Good stuff. I’m curious to see how future Nagash lists do. I’ll get 5 games in this upcoming weekend… not expecting much as I have only gotten two test games in. But I have found that Nagash needs to play aggressive. When I hold back I get wrecked on objectives.
  15. Yep. Took me a while to figure out the tech, but I think the Torment babysits the Spirit Hosts and his ability makes sure there’s none on low health so Nagash can bring back 2 each turn. I wish I would’ve made more time as I wanted to take 9 Spirit Hosts to my tournament next weekend, but just haven’t finished Nagash yet so realized I wouldn’t get to the Spirit Hosts and submitted a different list. I think they can become quite the tarpit though.
  16. Welp, Nagash is already changing things. One of the top 8 lists at LVO in the finals is a Nighthaunt list with Nagash. I’m not sure how LVO rules the bodyguard, but the list is Emerald Host with only one minimum unit of Hexwraiths. You can look it up in the Best Coast Pairings App. The list is generally: Nagash / Spirit Torment 9 Spirit Hosts / Hexwraiths / 3 x 10 Chainrasps Spell Portal Edit: Found out bodyguarding Nagash was not allowed.
  17. I mean almost the entire army is Rend -1. I’m really not sure what to expect from them. Maybe something like Judicators? Wow! That’s an insane amount. I really think being a box of 4 models, that they have to go up to 2 wounds. Stalkers too. But we’ll see.
  18. Some thoughts: Maybe we will be surprised by a large release for Nighthaunt? There's still two rumor engines that IMO are Nighthaunt and not part of this wave. Plus, I can't remember an army getting a new unit in a battlebox and then not getting a some other new stuff in their release. Nighthaunt now have three traditional shooting units: Krulghast, Chainghasts, and the new Craventhrone Guard. Add in the Tomb Banshee, Black Coach's option, and Olynder's shooting phase ability, and that's actually output in the shooting phase. This box contains no current battleline options. I'm guessing one of the three units will be getting a "battleline if..." I'm guessing the re-rolls from the Bladegheists and Spirit Torment will be gone. Bladegheists doing extra damage instead would be nice. Due to unit size, I would not be surprised to see the Myrmourn Banshees or the Craventhrone Guard be two wounds. It's weird to me that the Banshees were only 1 wound to begin with - their ability would work so much better if they were two wounds. Interested to see what the new warscrolls for these units are. Will probably wait to see that before getting the box. Edit: Also ended up submitting the following list for the tournament next weekend: Nagash / Olynder / Spirt Torment with PotFW 3 x 5 Hexwraiths / Chainrasps / Harridans We'll see how I do. Tom Lyons from Warhammer Weekly is also taking an Emerald Host list to the event. I don't know his list, but know he was debating between a Nagash list and a non-Nagash list. So should be interesting to see his list and how he does as well - he's gotten in a lot more reps than me lately with Nighthaunt.
  19. I’m a Nighthaunt player, so may have some bias, but I expect it to be announced that the next book will be Nighthaunt along with whatever model the New Year preview teased. I then expect a new unit to be teased for Fyreslayers and Idoneth but no book announcement for either yet. I think NH will jump them because it’s a Death book, which they haven’t released yet this edition. They also have already showed a new model for it. They have not shown anything else for Idoneth or Fyreslayers yet, just a clue that more is coming soon. I’m hopeful both armies receive a couple new kits, and that could give the AoS Preview more model weight.
  20. Y’all. I’m having some list paralysis for an event the first weekend of Feb -lists are due by midnight Thursday (EST). I want to run Nagash. The TO has ruled Nagash does not get bodyguard. Due to life and playing Stormcast at a one dayer, I’ve only got two test games in. Here’s what I have available: Nagash (working on painting him) Olynder / Reiekenor (almost finished painting) /Mannfred Dreadblade Harrow / Krulghast / Spirit Torment / Guardian of Souls 40 Reapers / 15 Hexwraiths / 10 Chainrasp / 9 Spirit Hosts (primed… 3 more unbuilt) 10 Harridans / 10 Bladegheists / 4 Myrmourn (unbuilt) Black Coach I’ve tried out: Nagash / Olynder / Krulghast / 3 x 5 Hexes / Chainrasp / Harridans and Nagash / Mannfred / Olynder / 3 x 5 Hexes I liked both, but am considering running a list with more of an anvil unit, taking a Harrow general to help with mobility, and taking the Black Coach for fun. Ideas include: Nagash / ST / GoS / Harrow / Spirit Hosts / 30 Reapers / Chainrasp Olynder / Nagash / Krulghast / 2 x 5 Hexes / 9 Spirit Hosts Nagash / Harrow / 20 Reapers / Hexes / 6 Spirit Hosts / Black Coach Thoughts? I’d like to go 3-2.
  21. No, they said this in an official financial report. So it must have sold well, just been over-produced.
  22. Building mine now. Only have two games in so far (against Idoneth and Kruleboyz) but have high hopes. I think the presence of Longstrikes and Stormdrake Guard holds him back a bit, but otherwise he should play good into most matchups but he was able to survive KBZ shooting while playing hyper aggressive (I wanted to see just what he could tank).
  23. 1. It's annoying, but I'm not somebody who collects a pile a shame. So it takes me a while to build and then paint... so the price is much more spread out for me than somebody who just buys whatever is new. 2. The app has fixed a lot of that - for now. I can find the rules for everything I need in the app. 3. I don't think that's true. Kruleboyz have not done overly well. People were pretty down on Nurgle (though I think it's a good book). I think largely it's just the nature of the new edition - that left certain armies behind. 4. That's just not true IMO. That happened back when I played WHFB, but every army save Nurgle and Idoneth had a book in 2nd edition, and those two had books right before and now seemingly at the beginning of 3rd edition, plus got lots of supplemental updates. I think people have gotten too used to instantaneous results; I'm actually quite pleased with the rate books and armies get updated. 5. Annoying, but easy enough to find them secondhand. 6. What debacle? I enjoyed the most recent FAQ/balance update, and appreciate that FAQs are now in the app. 7. I just don't buy stuff unless it's for an army I'm currently working on/playing. If I feel I need a limited release model after the fact, I can always get second hand for an upcharge. Typically, I just feel like I don't need it after the fact.
  24. @That Guy No, it’s a rumor engine pic. And the bottom 5 are 99% 40k. I don’t follow the game/lore, but there’s an Eldar model that it clearly is a remake of.
  25. One of the rumor engines looks like it could be part of a boat and also has Nighthaunt style metalwork. That’s it.
