Converting a Stardrake to Galrauch

A while ago on here I asked about how achievable it would be to convert a Stardrake into Galrauch the Tzeentch Dragon. I like dragons and I play Tzeentch so I thought it would be good to have a dragon to play with. He doesn’t have a current model and I think the old model looks horrible. I quite like the Stardrake too, and I thought it would be a good hobby project to do. I put the idea on hold as it would require a lot of Greenstuff skills which I have never used before and the position of the neck didn’t look like it would lend itself well to having a second neck and head grafted on to it.

My local wargame store was having a sale and I decided to take the plunge and I bought myself a Stardrake. I looked about for necks that could be used as a second neck with not much avail, after doing an assembly of the neck on the Stardrake, I could tell ordering a second Stardrake neck was out of the question as it would not fit at all, even if positioned elsewhere it was a no go. I looked through my Tyranids bits and found a Hive Tyrant tail I thought could be used as a base with Greenstuff. I ordered some Greenstuff and some tools. I tried to get an ice pattern rolling pin, but for whatever reason the website wouldn’t accept my money. As I said I have never used Greenstuff before so this was somewhat of gamble for me. I have a small Stormcast force so if it wasn’t going to work out I could use it as it was intended. In my Tyranids bits box I also founds some spines that I thought would work well for the scales on the back of the neck.
So this is my WIP blog of Galrauch.

My Starting bits.

I trimmed some bits of the tail and covered it with Greenstuff. I rolled out a sheet of Greenstuff and tried to make scales on the back, after putting it on and adding the spines it somewhat messed up my pattern, later when it had set a bit I carved in another pattern. The spines still looked a bit shabby though.

I then tried different possible positions to add the neck at. The location was not as straight forward as it seems, there was only one place it could go, and both heads also limited the available space.

I decided where I was happy with it and stuck it on the neck, I also filled in the holes around the head and attached that. A spare body part from a Tyranid Warrior I attached at the bottom as I felt it looked good.

When this had set, I did some cosmetic touching up, adding more flat scales at the bottom and filling in holes to the spines at the top.

My early thoughts from using greenstuff at this point is that, I have got better with it as I have used it, but a bit late to go back for some parts, I have used around 5 inches to get to this point. If I had had that rolling pin the top skin may have looked better, I am not skilful enough to match the skin of the model. I’m hoping that when it is painted it won’t be that noticeable. It is slow work, I should have had more breaks between parts of it, but as it takes a day between sessions, especially adding the scales and skin at the top, it would have taken a lot longer. I know for the future though.

So, being reasonably happy with it, I started constructing the rest of the Stardrake, I shaved off certain parts of the markings on the armour plates and kept others I thought will fit well. I then part assembled and glued, I did not make it all as it needs to be in parts for painting. I think he is starting to look good though.

Galrauch doesn’t have a rider but, if I decide to sometimes use this model as a Chaos Lord or Sorcerer riding a dragon I decided to convert the Stormcast to a Chaos Lord. I know there isn’t any rules for them at the moment but I can tweak some rules to make them fit. I didn’t really want to use the Stormcast sword, but my Chaos one didn’t look as grand. I think he looks good though.

I also did some slight touching up on the neck, and prepared the base.

That's all for now. I have to undercoat him and start painting him. Thinking an an orange/red skin and blue scales and wings.

Here is the finished Galrauch, I'm pretty happy with how he turned out in the end. I tried to go with a vibrant colour scheme as I thought it would look Tzeentchy. It's a pretty hard model to get a good angle for a photo.

The scales looked somewhat sketchy at first but man, they look great finished. Brilliant painting too !

Thanks, yeah I was quite worried about them at first, and when the first layer of blue went on them I thought it was going to be a disaster. I basically just had to free hand paint that and work with the scales I'd scored in where I could.
