Move units "within" 3" of enemy models

Pritzker128

Question

Hello all!

I have been discusing the movement rules with a friend regarding "no part of the move can be within 3" of an enemy unit" restriction on a normal move.

Basically, as far as I can read, if I make a normal move with a unit (move or run), it can't move within 3" of a enemy model, thats mean 3" or less. Meaning you can be 3.000001" if you want to, but not exactly 3". If you just move, yo can charge it later, if you run, you can't.

My friend for the other hand, says the rule does not especify that you cannot move exactly 3" from that enemy model, so you eventually can move (or run) with your unit to EXACTLY 3" from the enemy unit and still pile in into that enemy model in the combat fase EVEN if you don't charge them.

So, the question is, can a normal move (move or run) ends exactly 3" from an enemy model?

Thanks!

You have it correct. You cannot end a normal move within 3 inches of the enemy. The whole exactly 3 argument your friend is using doesn't actually matter, because the wording in the core rules is pretty clear.

This says you cannot make a normal move within 3 inches.

Here is the wording for who can pile in, and it again specifies the wording within 3 inches. Specifically, that a model can only pile in if it charged that turn, or is within 3 inches.

So regardless of the "is EXACTLY 3 inches WITHIN 3 inches" debate, the restriction on the normal move 100% prevents the pile in from happening in this case.

Your friend is wrong. The rule does specify that you cannot move exactly 3" from enemy units, because 3" is within 3". That is why everyone has loads of those 3" movement markers. Buy some, place them in front of your guys and tell your friend to stay outside of 3". Everyone generally accepts that a unit just outside of 3" then has a 3" charge, which will take the model base to base with the enemy unit.

It is also worth noting that you cannot pile in from just outside of 3" because those units are not eligible to be in combat per the core rules "A unit is eligible to fight if it is within 3" of an enemy unit, or if it made a charge move in the same turn."
