Ratamaplata
Ok so this is tonight's progress... plus I did a quick hour on a scheme for my lad's elves. Redid the face as I'd mistaken part of it for armour. Plus I wasn't happy with what I had done. Redid the tail as it was ****** and I'd rubbed a bit off. Added blood for the blood god to the halberd. A couple of minor tweaks and touch ups. Started the base. Sadly he's a bit off angle... I thought it looked more dynamic but it just looks odd. I can live with it though. Ratamaplata
Done. My first mini fully painted and based after 20 years off since I was 16. Very happy with it. Thanks to everyone who's given me advice along the way Comments/criticism... any feedback positive or negative is welcome. Could the base do with a bit of flock? I'd still leave plenty of mud. Redking
The miniature is beautiful and I love his eyes. If I could find a critique it might be the mud. Are you using Stirland Mud? I prefer the Battlemire because it goes on a bit thicker. If you build it up a little around the rocks, it would look more natural. A dry brush of Tyrant Skull or Sylvaneth Wildwood would add to the texture. If you want it to look muddy or like there are puddles, you can add some gloss varnish. That being said, the painting and execution is great.

I've seen bases where people drybrush it to a high contrast and don't think I like it. (Side note... I didn't use drybrushing at all on this mini... it's all I knew 20 years ago as far as techniques go). There is quite a bit of subtle colour variation on the mud, but it doesn't show up that well in these photos. It's stirland mud yeah. 2 layers of it, built up around the stone bases, left fairly flat elsewhere. The battlemire looked a bit sharp and grainy to be mud to my eye? Glossing it sounds good. I haven't varnished it all yet. Will matt varnish the mini so a bit of gloss on the base sounds like a great idea cheers Do you think a few small areas of grass flock would look good? Ratamaplata
40k not AoS, but I've had my first go at pinning and green stuff tonight. Working on a conversion for a friend's son. Changing an imperial terminator to chaos...

A little grass would add some variety to the base, which is a little more natural. I have 3 types of grass and a couple of different flowers on my Sylvaneth bases. The cool thing about bases is that you can always pop the mini off the base and start again. I just completely rebased my Skitarii army.

As awesome as people make some bases look I usually prefer something fairly simple to keep the model the focus. Almost finished my first 10 of these... Then there'll only be 30 more to go ? Ratamaplata
All base coats down, two coats, and a quick wash. Highlighting and details shouldn't take too long and will be more fun to do
Ratamaplata
The horde grows... 3 clanrats finished, 7 wip... Trying to paint these much quicker but still make them look good... So far these have been... primed brown, 2 base coats for everything except metal, Army Painter strong tone wash, bone colours have been highlighted (banner and any bandage or rope details). It's probably taken me 8 hours total to do 7. Comments/criticism all valued
Ratamaplata
Thoughts on this... is it a decent paint job for a basic unit? The robes, fur and wood have had nothing but base coat and wash. Everything else has been blended and/or highlights. 6 more left to do the eyes and armour.
Nin Win
I think that works. Were you going to give them a similar basing treatment as the warlord?

Yeah man... mud and a bit of grass. Gotta get some round bases. Looks like some people put them on 32mm(?) but they look silly to me for such small minis so me so I'm gonna get 25s. Nin Win
A friend made a bunch of these skaven models into a bloodbowl team on 25mm rounds and they look great.
