Bidding pressure is a real thing. It can be a bit muted on ebay due to how it works, but in general if two or three people want something REALLY badly they will keep bidding to get the win not just the item; which can make people bid insane prices for things. Of course at the same time sometimes you don't get anyone or just one person interested and thus you don't get a bidding war and the price stays way below what it should be.
